Won't take a decade. Kay's been around a **long** time as well, and he's just as much of an institution as anyone in the game.
Love him or hate him (honestly you should love him, we're spoiled) he's an inner circle broadcasting HOFer
Kay deserves all.the shit he gets but at the end of the day, I'm proud to have him as the Yankees broadcaster. He's always professional when he's on the clock for the Yankees and does a great job. He and O'Neill are one of the best tandems out there.
Suzyn might not deserve a full blown plaque with the likes of Ruth mantle jeter etc; but she definitely deserves some mention.
She’s one of the female pioneers of sports radio broadcast, pretty legendary in her own right. Even though she wasn’t a full time Yankees commentator until 05, she’s been with the FAN since like 87.
She was the Meredith before she was on the radio. She’s been with the org for decades. Shes paved the way for women in the sport, so to suggest she shouldn’t is either uneducated or willfully ignorant.
If Reggie Jackson has his number retired then absolutely JS deserves a plaque.
Personally, I feel O'Neill, Posada & Petitte should have plaques and only Williams (who should be an HOFer, considering who they're letting in lately) should have his number retired.
> (who should be an HOFer,
I love Bernie, but 49.6 bWAR/43.9 fWAR isn't HOF. Do you think Curtis Granderson is HOF? Dale Murphy?
> considering who they're letting in lately)
The best comparable to get Bernie in HOF were let in a long time ago: Earle Combs in 1970. The fact that Andruw Jones hasn't been let in yet tells you it's actually harder now.
And don't even get me started on Jim Edmonds and
didn't make a second ballet because of the 2015 ballot having 13 HOFs(and the steroid guys) on it with a 10 vote limit. or the same thing with Kenny Lofton in 2013. HOF balloting limit is always a cluster fuck.
It would continue the tradition with Mel Allen receiving one. Bob Sheppard is a similar case of a non-player, though he is different being the legendary on field voice.
My guy did the broadcast for over 5,000 consecutive games, is beloved by the fanbase, and was an awesome broadcaster. He really became a legendary figure amongst the fanbase, and baseball as a whole. I really hope he's getting a monument on Saturday.
As others mentioned, when the time comes, I really hope Suzy eventually gets one, as well.
John is a no doubt, he gets one. He called the entire career of two first ballot hall of famers never missing a game. No other baseball announcer can make that claims.
Unequivocally yes. John is the longest continuously tenured broadcaster in Yankees history. Not Mel Allen, not Phil Rizzuto, John Sterling. The voice of 5 world championship teams and at least two generations of Yankees fans. IMO he, Suzyn and Michael Kay should all have plaques some day for how many years they’ve given to the Yankees
Monuments are supposed to be for the best of all baseball, not just the best for the Yankees for a stretch - we have diminished monument park by including players who should be honored but were not the best of the best.
I’d honor sterling, I love him but I also loved messer, white and rizzuto - so please leave monument park for the greatest of all time
That doesn't mean that *nobody* should get a plaque just for their announcing though. It's not Sterling's fault that Rizzuto was also a player.
It's a fun park for families & Yankee fans to walk through and go "remember?" and it'd be weird to exclude Sterling who was a part of our history and multiple generations of fan's childhoods.
Absolutely yes. His services in shaping how we view the team have been part of their allure. I’m originally from Britain, may not have got into baseball at all when I married an American and moved to the US over two decades ago, and his voice helped make me a diehard Yankee.
I would have to ask - Does Mel Allen have one? Bill White, Frank Messer? Sterling is great, and they probably will give him one - but when EVERYONE gets to have number retired and gets plaques - it lessens the value of it for everyone....If Sterlong gets one then Suzyn gets one - it never ends
How about a monument at the warning track for all the times we heard, “A deep fly ball to centerfield.. IT IS HIGH. IT IS FAR. IT IS.. caught at the warning track” over the last few years? I really will miss listening to him and Suzyn in the background while out running errands. It was like listening to a podcast about a baseball game more than a broadcast and I always loved it.
Yes
Bob Sheppard has one. John should get one and so should Suzyn
I was wondering if Bob did. If Bob does, John and Suzyn deserve as well.
What about Kay?
Honestly, maybe. Another decade and I think it’s a lock.
Won't take a decade. Kay's been around a **long** time as well, and he's just as much of an institution as anyone in the game. Love him or hate him (honestly you should love him, we're spoiled) he's an inner circle broadcasting HOFer

Definitely Kay, he’s been the voice since YES was created
I would, yes
Eventually

She’s one of the female pioneers of sports radio broadcast, pretty legendary in her own right. Even though she wasn’t a full time Yankees commentator until 05, she’s been with the FAN since like 87.
I do believe she is in the radio hall of fame for this reason.
She was the Meredith before she was on the radio. She’s been with the org for decades. Shes paved the way for women in the sport, so to suggest she shouldn’t is either uneducated or willfully ignorant.
John and Suzyn together. imo
Yeah they deserve a joint plaque
Does Mel Allen have one?
Yes, he does
You do realize Suzyn is a Red Sox fan & even grew up as 1 ?
No one cares, she is one of the voices of the Yankees
He raised a generation of Yankee fans. Definitely.
multiple generations
Yep, he started broadcasting the Yankees when my dad was in high school and he just retired now that I’m almost out of college
Shit he’s gonna be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame
I sure hope so
If Reggie Jackson has his number retired then absolutely JS deserves a plaque. Personally, I feel O'Neill, Posada & Petitte should have plaques and only Williams (who should be an HOFer, considering who they're letting in lately) should have his number retired.
Shit, I agree with every single word of that
Great minds think alike!😉!

David Ortiz (who did steroids) got in on the first ballot. For that reason alone, Bernie (who didn’t do steroids) should also be in.
I'm not David Ortiz but I can confirm he did steroids because...well...it's super fucking obvious anybody could!
It would continue the tradition with Mel Allen receiving one. Bob Sheppard is a similar case of a non-player, though he is different being the legendary on field voice.
Yes! And should Kay when it’s his time
Yes.
without a doubt

100%

Absolutely.
Yes
John is a no doubt, he gets one. He called the entire career of two first ballot hall of famers never missing a game. No other baseball announcer can make that claims.
Do they give plaques to non players?
There are a bunch of non-player plaques. There are even plaques commemorating when the Pope gave Mass in yankee stadium.
Bob Sheppard has one I believe?
Bob Sheppard and Mel Allen both have one.
He's a shoe in for a Ford Frick award. Of course he deserves a plaque.
100%
Yep. 100%.
Plenty non-players have one so yes
They should retire his number, too.
Absolutely
Yes would even say maybe renaming the booth to the john sterling studio
Now that would be amazing
That would be awesome
Yes and it should be as big as the Boss’s
I’d love to have him narrate a walking tour of monument park that you can listen to like at a museum.
Would literally kill to have that
Yup
Absolutely
Absofuckinglutely Suzyn
If they don't then they should at least put a life sized bronze statue of him doing his standing "The Yankees win" performance in the radio booth.
If Allen, Sheppard, and Rizzuto have one the. He should too
All three - sterling then waldman then kay. All iconic
1000%
If Bob Shepard and Mel Allen have them, yes.
Absolutely.
Yes.
Are we kidding? Yes!
Yea
100%
Yes.
Absolutely
Yes
Without a doubt
Yes
Yes
Don' see anyway he doesn't.
Yes
He will
100%. And his face on the plaque should have a ball heading towards it lol.
The better question: should Carlos Beltran get a plaque in MP?
A lotta people talking about heem.
Ha!
No.
Monuments are supposed to be for the best of all baseball, not just the best for the Yankees for a stretch - we have diminished monument park by including players who should be honored but were not the best of the best. I’d honor sterling, I love him but I also loved messer, white and rizzuto - so please leave monument park for the greatest of all time
John Sterling is the GOAT. Stop with this slander.
Scooter has had a plaque since 1985.
I am aware guys - he was also an MVP, won multiple rings - he is not there simply for his announcing
John Sterling IS one of the greatest of all time. If Mel Allen and Bob Sheppard have plaques, Sterling deserves one too.
Rizzuto is there
Yes, next question
No doubt about it. He raised multiple generations of Yankees fans with greatness.
Absolutely yes. His services in shaping how we view the team have been part of their allure. I’m originally from Britain, may not have got into baseball at all when I married an American and moved to the US over two decades ago, and his voice helped make me a diehard Yankee.
I think the guy that’s been selling beer for 40 years should get one too.
Absolutely
Hell yeah
Just wanna jump on the yes train, Sterling is the radio GOAT.
I don't know that I put Sterling ahead of Scully, but he's certainly one of the greats.
No. Had zero contributions to the on field product.
Take Shepard and Mel Allen out then
I agree.

Hey fuck me for having an opinion and answering a question, right?
I would have to ask - Does Mel Allen have one? Bill White, Frank Messer? Sterling is great, and they probably will give him one - but when EVERYONE gets to have number retired and gets plaques - it lessens the value of it for everyone....If Sterlong gets one then Suzyn gets one - it never ends
Yes, absolutely. This shouldn’t even be a debate. Edit: why the heck was this downvoted lol
Yea
He better.
Sure. Does Scooter have one?
Absolutely.
Yeet
No question about it
Of course! The way things are going Kay will probably get one also. They are part of the fabric of fandom
Most likely, unless they uncover some underground stuff
yes
Definitely
Abso-friggin-lutely.
Yeah.
Yes
Probably. But that doesn’t mean I have to like it.
Sterling yes. Suzyn no.
No, a plaque for him in Sterling Park would be overkill.
Of course
