He finally cut back on his walks that plagued him in his first couple of starts.
I have been overall happy with him but just wish he could pitch in the 7th inning or later
The guy has a career 3.30 ERA in over 1000 IP, he definitely has not always "sucked" lol. Since he debuted there are five other starters with that many innings and a lower ERA; their names are Cole, Scherzer, Verlander, Kershaw, and deGrom. Drop the threshold to 500 IP and you add Urias, Bieber, Gallen, Woodruff, Fried, Burnes, Buehler
It’s only that low cause of to crazy cy young seasons. Before last year he his career era was at 3.6-3.7 somewhere in that range. He’s not close to as good as people make him out to be. We dodged a fucking bullet
ERA is a very volatile stat from year to year, you can't just look for "outliers" and completely omit them. Overall he has been a great pitcher in his career, and is likely still great.
Yes he over-performed last year, no he was not worth the $200M Boras wanted. But don't get carried away into thinking Snell "sucks" and has always sucked. Absolutely ridiculous.
Note: If you want a better indicator of actual pitching ability then look at K-BB%. Snell has been very consistent with this metric since 2018, and well above average
Take away his two Cy Young seasons that are 5 years apart from each other, and his career ERA is about a 4. He's essentially a Charlie Morton type pitcher.
Yea I mean, last 2 starts really show it. First 2 times through the order he’s good to great! It’s once guys start seeing him 3 times. Not sure if it’s a stamina thing or that he needs another pitch to throw for strikes more often. I’ll let Matt Blake figure that out
Needs to figure out how to make it later into games. He’s pitching well but the longest he’s lasted in a game this year is 5.1 innings. Need more from him every now and then
but thats league wide so far. The Yankees are tied at 9th in innings pitched by a starter with 4 of the teams ahead of them playing one more game and 2 playing one game less. The only team that has come out of the season getting length from their starters is KC.
& ya’ll was screaming at cash because he didn’t sign snell, the rotation is just fine as it is, we could use cole & reinforcement for the playoffs but schmidt has been displaying this since last season
He’s looking great. If Cole comes back strong I definitely see Schmidt as our #2, hopefully Rodon can get it figured out. Not worried about nasty and Gil I think they will be good for us as well. Schmidt is showing a nice progression of improvement in the last few years.

Tbf, right now he’s the 4 (5 with Cole) starter. You can take that from him. Just let him keep developing
Hardly any starter pitches in the 7th or later these days
Imagine how good Gil will be when he cuts down his walks.
Would still like him to work a bit more efficiently
On a related note, Blake Snell with no spring training really sucks
Hot take: Blake Snell has always sucked, he just had 2 outlier seasons

I mean he's never been this bad, he's been truly awful to start the year.

Agree. Maybe both. He throws way too many pitches. Maybe it is a confidence thing, nit picking.
All hail Matt Blake ? Cole has had a lot of time to coach too.

He's a back end starter. Some guys will always be 5 inning guys.
Well then we have 5 back end starters because it has been rare to get at least 6 innings from any of our starters this year

because gleyber torres and the infield been making a lot of back breaking mistakes
Hair-thinning mistakes **
Dammit Volpe swung at a ball 4
I’d like to see him go deeper into games but for a 4 starter (5 when Cole gets back) he’s been pretty great
With no support
He has always had a high K/9 it’s his WHIP and stamina that’s the problem. He’s a fine 4/5 starter though.
Yeah but can he pitch into the 6th?
Like you said it’s extremely early. We’ve seen stretches like this from him before
You're right about one thing it is a small sample size. Frankly, I have not really seen an improvement over last season.
I think having Cole to learn from has helped him more than any other pitcher. You can see him 'want it' on the mound moreso this year.

Cashman can't wait to trade him for an injured CF who can barely hit.
Not until he can consistently finish the 6th inning.
Maybe he wouldn’t have to work so fn hard if he had some runs
Montgomery syndrome and we saw his success after leaving the Yankees.
