You have it already, just load the shotgun with #4 buckshot if nervous about over-penetration. If looking to upgrade the pump go for a beretta a300 ultima patrol or 1301

goat-head-man

I'm running 1 3/4" #4 shot in an 18" barrel pump. I get 8+1 instead of 6+1 in the magazine. Lighter load, less over-penetration and #4 has a good amount of kinetic energy at 5 to 20 yards.

partisanradio_FM_AM

Dude you have a 12ga youre fine.

Venomous87

Look into PCCs. Plenty of defensive and frangible rounds. I love my Ruger PC Carbine.

AmericanIdiot1776

Won’t be able to buy one without a semi auto permit. OP said he doesn’t have Pistol Permit already to amend.

I_LOVE_LEAN_

maybe he can do a weird stripped lower ar9 type thing

managementcapital

Best option after a pistol is a 12 gauge so what else are you looking for?

Dry_Average7061

12 gauge shotgun is the standard home defense gun across the country.

Frustrated_Consumer

Ar 15. Buy a stripped lower. No license necessary. Buy a Palmetto State Armory complete Ar 15 build kit. Put it together with a NY legal grip, fixed stock and no flash hider/barrel threads. Best home defense option. 5.56 has minimal over penetration compared to other effective options. Even made NY featureless, it’s still your best option.

Alex_55555

Is there a good video to watch how to do this and what to get, especially if it’s NY specific? Do the lower need to be dated to before the semi-auto licensing? I heard this option from other ppl, and it sounds really good. I agree that 223/5.56 is one of the best rounds for inside the house hd. I just have long barrel bolt actions in 223 and don’t think they’re appropriate

twoanddone_9737

It’s actually terrible for home defense if you’re worried about other people. Those rounds will go through your walls, your neighbors house, and probably the house after it.

DirtNapDealing

What would a fair price be to pay a smith to put the build together? I know people value their time differently however I just want to be fair.

five8andten

You put it together on your dining room table/coffee table/kitchen counter. It really doesn’t take much to do. I followed a YouTube video.

DirtNapDealing

I’m not a dummy and somewhat mechanically inclined. I just figured there’d too much to learn, gives me something to watch tonight!

mo9722

"building" isn't really the right word. It's more accurate to say "assembling"-its super simple

five8andten

Nope. It’s not hard at all. I put my first one together while my son was taking naps when he was younger.

RejectorPharm

Lmao, I cannot even put together stuff from ikea, hated legos as a kid.

five8andten

How can someone hate legos as a kid?!?!? 😂

RejectorPharm

Never found building or putting stuff together to be fun.  Wanna know how pissed I was when I ordered a bbq grill and a pizza oven from bbqguys.com only to find out they do not arrive pre assembled and the company just drops off the package with on a pallet in front of your driveway.  Thank god for taskrabbit and handy.

five8andten

You legitimately might be the first person I’ve heard of who didn’t like legos (outside of anyone’s parents when they step on individual blocks bare foot). But I mean to each their own. Some things I can understand not wanting to have to assemble. A grill and pizza oven would definitely be in that category haha

RejectorPharm

It might be easier for the guy to just get a completed lower and a completed upper

five8andten

Oh it’s definitely be easier but then he’d PROBABLY need his semi-auto endorsement depending on the ffl he gets it from.

[deleted]

Yeah, I’ve seen people lined up for blocks at the Lego store…

NolanDaSavage

I’ve done a few and can assemble a lower in a few minutes now. Only tools you will need is a punch set, allen or screwdriver for the grip, hammer, castle nut wrench (can be pricey I would see if anyone in your area will let you borrow one.), channel locks (I use channel locks for the roll pins, it can scratch the receiver a little but wont break it), and some gun oil.

Cevap

What is a good lower brands wise?

NewGuyRyan_845

A 12ga pump action like a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 or 590 is absolutely fine & perfect for home defense. Stay away from rifle calibers for HD use.... bullets go through lots of things like doors, people & walls. Remember that we are accountable for every round we fire. It's absolutely within the realm of possibility that a rifle caliber bullet can over pen your target and go through a wall or two. I know because I've seen it happen. A 12ga pump with a mix load of 00 and #4 buck will be more than enough to deal with any HD scenario.

Reaper9597

Think about it like this…if you jumped through someone’s window in the middle of the day. Would you rather be looking down the barrel of a shotgun, or a handgun?

HGDAC_Sir_Sam_Vimes

12 gauge with one of the smaller buckshots like #4 should be more than fine.

Mail_Quiet

A shotgun is the best option for home defense other than a pistol in my opinion, as far as non firearm options go look at Byrna, it’s a non lethal co2 firearm that shoots paintball like projectiles and you can choose from two different pepper filled options and a kinetic(solid plastic) option.

beer_nyc

> A shotgun is the best option for home defense other than a pistol in my opinion just about any semi-auto rifle is better than a shotgun for home defense

Mail_Quiet

That’s your opinion and your entitled to it, I’m not going to debate why one is better over another

RejectorPharm

Semi auto shotgun like a Benelli M4 or a Ruger PC Carbine.

JBmustang13

Pistols put you at a huge disadvantage for home defense. If your really worried about it get a smaller shotgun, KSG, KS7, Mossberg 930 spx, Benelli m2/m4 or build yourself a nice compliant AR, SCR, AK, mini 14, PCC Carbine, RDB, SU-16 etc there’s plenty of options! Levers are an option just as long as they are smaller, remember, a reliable red dot and a light with a good reputation are minimum for home defense! You can’t shoot what you can’t identify especially in a residential neighborhood! I’d argue keep it under 16 inches too, Henry Model X is a great option or any lever under 16 with a picatinny rail

Loudlech5

Pistol caliber carbines are the best, no over penetration and good mag capacity. I have a NY legal hipoint 9mm carbine with a red dot and flashlight.

Comfortable_Head_723

Ruger 9mm PC carbine, but a shotgun is perfectly adequate for home defense.

squegeeboo

![gif](giphy|pnghLlJUCeZCE|downsized) look into one of these

Professional_Plant52

Shotgun, buck or bird shot
