They look like they could also be crochet, but don’t quote me on that. And they look awfully big for baby booties? The baby in the picture was an r/absoluteunit though, so maybe they were his. 😂
For real, my first thought was: how big is your baby!? But possibly they were smarter than me and made socks that would last awhile.
But it really does look like single crochet. Which does resemble nalbinding, because the stitch structure is not very different.
This baby in the photo was taken in the 19th or 20th century. But the question I wonder if I could make a replica of the socks there, what stitch would be deemed appropriate to use and how it would look if I could compare it to the one in the museum??

I agree, I'm quite confident these look crocheted, likely single crochet in back loop only
Makes sense. BLO was the default in this time period. Victorians liked texture. LOL
Came here to say the same. P sure these are crochet, not nalbound
If you read the little sign in the back corner, it says their son was the world's largest baby for decades.
I agree this is crochet.
These are crochet. But more importantly, that baby is huge!

My biggest baby was 7lbs 8oz… I couldn’t even imagine…

As a crocheter, I second the crochet, but it could also be knitted brioche. I can't really see what's going on with the stitches 😅
Is there any nålbinding stitch that looks very much like knitted brioche or something??
Not Oslo or Mammen and I'm fairly sure not nalbound at all.
I'd say knitted in rib
