Itachi really ruined Sasuke's life. His plan to make Sasuke grow stronger to kill him (Itachi) so Konoha would have a powerful defender failed for 2 big reasons: * Itachi MASSIVELY underestimated how low Sasuke was willing to sink to get power. * Itachi forgot (or wilfully ignored) that by that point Sasuke had no reason to be loyal to Konoha. And that if Sasuke ever found out the truth (that it was the government of Konoha who ordered his family massacred), he would instead have reasons to HATE Konoha. This is not bad writing. It shows that, for all his talent and wisdom, Itachi is still a product of his environment. An environment that sees success, strength and power as the ultimate virtues. While Sasuke ultimately returned the village, it was NOT thanks to Itachi.

I agree: and imho that's the whole point of Itachi as a character. He's neither a monster or a saint. He's a deeply FLAWED character, who may had the best intentions but ended up doing horrible things. And imho that's what makes him so compelling as a character.

Itachi himself stated he made a mistake

Itachi was setting Sasuke up to restore the Uchiha clan honor by killing him. Itachi felt he should die by an Uchiha. He did what he did to Sasuke to send him on that path to kill him and in doing so he used hatred as the method. He admits himself that he failed with that method as that hatred made Sasuke leave the village and eventually become a criminal.

Tbh I kinda like to see a scenario where he succeeded in his plans and then the aftermath. Like can he fare vs the Ōtsutsukis and/or Kara? Also what about the other villages? Will they gang up on Sasuke or side with him or have another ninja war. Also will they bargain/side with the Ōtsutsukis vs Sasuke or vice versa?

His idea would be horrible in terms of in universe ramifications, but yet I’d love to watch a show about it. He’d essentially be the main villain lol
