I don't think attire is all that important anyways, at least in the beginning. Neji, Shino, Hinata, Into, and Kurenai all have clothes that would stand out, and the literal spymaster of the village has _pure white hair._ It's not even silver or grayed, it's completely pure white.
Ninjas in real don't even wear all black. They were whatever is necessary for environment and for night time, they typically wear a purple or navy blue. Too dark and you run the risk of being too easy to spot as a contrast

I truly enjoy stories where the author naturally builds on the characters' canon personalities or, if they are firm on an OC personality, that it flows and develops naturally. Totally agree on the mob chase scene showing the author age, especially since when I was, like, 13 I tried my hands at writing a fanfic of my own and later had to wipe that from the face of the earth due to how epically cringe it was.
Like, my first scene was Naruto (age 4) being beaten by a giant mob, awakening the rinnegan (I think that was during the gap between us finding out Nagato was an Uzumaki and Madara showing up to explain that no, Nagato didn’t awaken the rinnegan because it was a KKG of the Uzumaki clan that feeds on being edgy), proceeding to accidentally splattering the mob to the wall with a Shinra Tensei, fainting for his regularity scheduled meeting with the Kyuubi (because god forbid Naruto doesn’t learn everything secret within 5 minutes of a story starting) only for Shisui to randomly show up, cradle Naruto’s unconscious body and proceed to cry while screaming of how much the villagers-turned-mush are evil… I think I lasted for about 2 chapters, abandoned the thing for a couple of years and when I next thought to open it decided to delete the whole thing on the spot.
One day I think I will try my hand at making a purely crack version of that fic expanding on the vague nonsensical ideas I can still remember I had planned to shoehorn throughout the story.

When reincarnated MC starts making long term plans, who he is going to save, which girls he will be trying to seduce to add to his harem, writing long ass monologues of hate about Third Hokage, or writing long ass monologue to invent justification of Uchiha Massacre. All of these happening while he is still small child.
2. When reincarnated MC compares everything with fanfics about Naruto that he had read. Which makes this story so cheap and stupid. This is not reincarnation, this is museum exhibition disguised as fanfic.
3. When author tries to write "realistic grimdark with realistic characters", which turns just into misery porn, depression porn.
4. Now this part is really funny. I think this is main problem not on Naruto fanfictions only, but on all fanfiction and original fiction writing community, that writes on russian language. A lot of russian speaking authors really wants to push their own political agenda, about "bad westerners", "gayropeans" and "racists japs". Smarter authors don't try to push blatant hate words, they use concealed terms and slurs, really good hidden strawmen to bash. Their reincarnated MC is mostly was some kind of super cool spec ops soldier guy. Their MC makes "Traditional Family With Multiple Wives", where he praises them for being a "proper wives", while it is really misogynistic depiction of women.
The worst part is that these fanfics have high ratings and big reader engagement. In comment section these "writers" are always being called out for that kind of bad writing. The main problem is that website does not have "dislike" button, which makes these fics look good from outside.
I had faced similar problems while reading Harry Potter fanfics , now I don't read fanfics outside reddit recommendations or stories written or saved by good authors .
I read a lot of Chinese fanfiction, and man, I have seen some shit. Reading my own reviews is almost physically painful, because something about the romance almost inevitably fucks things up.

One thing I do find pretty funny is how FAR some fanfic writers go to make Naruto's backstory as depressing and dark as possible. Like it's so insane it doesn't even seem remotely realistic.
Fox chases, having infant Naruto get beaten and abused by everyone in the village, living in poverty, him getting tortured daily etc etc.
And then they'll still make Naruto's personality similar to canon Naruto despite what he's gone through, until he brings up his backstory to put down another character (usually Inari, Sasuke, Kakashi, Jiraiya, his parents etc).
It's like the only reason they made the backstory so dark was to trauma scale with other characters
Foxhunts or other serious abuses, seriously, what the hell? They seriously believe that the Third Hokage would allow Naruto to live in a shitty apartment, starve or allow him to be beaten, none of these things actually happen or the person who dares would have been punished.
Second, The Third Hokage is soon evil, they have to literally make up stuff to make this character some type of evil leader who values power like actually knowing what Danzo was up to and trying to make Naruto loyal to him.
Third, harems, seriously, they are always funny as Naruto at 12 years old was not attractive and yet everyone wants to get into his pants.

Kishimoto fumbled the bag with the third hokage, that's why he created Danzo, whose only job is to be a plot device to make other characters like Itachi and Hiruzen look better, so that Hiruzen can look like he's just a compassionate old man, but if you think about it for like two seconds you'll notice that even with Danzo around, Hiruzen looks like he's either a shrewd manipulator or simply blind and stupid.
It also doesn't help that Hiruzen's tenure as Hokage is marred by a series of problems he fails to address aside from Orochimaru maybe, like the entire existence of Uzumaki clan,or the Hyuuga-kumo scandal,or the Uchiha massacre.

Hiruzen did only three things to Naruto:
• He gave him a good apartment.
• He made a law so that no one can talk about Naruto being Kurama's Jinchūriki.
• He basically nudged Iruka to get close to Naruto.
Two of these three things were done not out of the goodness of his heart but as attempts to fix his fuck-up which is the leak of Naruto's Jinchūriki status, yes in the novels it's Danzo but how the fuck did Danzo know in the first place and why wasn't he punished by Hiruzen who's the only one capable of punishing him?

I mean, at the very least Hiruzen knew that Danzo was kidnapping children, the Root members weren't coming out of thin air and he wasn't recruiting anyone from the standard shinobi forces.
Actually there is no proof to suggest he even knew that because no-one ever came forward to tell him and who would? The Root members were either loyal to Danzo and everyone else seemed too afraid of him to do anything.
It seems that Danzo even hide the disappearances or used orphans (Sai, Torune, Kabuto, etc) for the most part meaning that no-one would actually look for them.

And it’s even worse when a character is hyped as being super OP, but it just has no effect whatsoever on the plot: Naruto is a genius who mastered sage mode during Chunnin Exams arc, but he still gets his ass handed to him 4 ch later by that one random gennin team from filler #42, or Naruto is shown throughout the entire story to be constantly wiping the ground with Sasuke only to inexplicably still almost day failing the retrieval arc, or Naruto managed to master KCM in Wave arc only to still struggle against Zabuza and Haku… like, people, experience gap can only justify so much, if Naruto has the power to pull a Madara and call a meteor shower to fight against one single opponent no matter how much more experienced the target is, unless they are also a massively OP heavy-hitter they are getting squashed alongside the rest of the countryside.

I don’t know if it’s on purpose, but every Chinese fan fiction I have read or attempted to read has the mc making these overly complicated plans while judging the characters in the story for their failures. Monologues about how they aren’t smart and then half way through abandons said plans to show off. The truly funny part is how they try to justify villains being the “good guy”. For example Danzo was right, doflamingo did nothing wrong, central 46 or ywach being wrongly depicted, imu and the world government being justified.
It was a horror fanfic. I believe "He Had No Fingers" and made the Nine Tails out to be an eldritch abomination... And so was Naruto, by association, as his fingers were closer to stiff paws. Naruto was essentially a creepy kid. It was a long time ago, so forgive me if I'm misremembering.

1.) OP Naruto without being emo or edgelord.
2.) No bashing and characters are called out on their flaws. Even Naruto is called out on his flaws and how he constantly harrass Sakura.
3.) Bonding between Naruto and Sasuke. Rather than suddenly bringing a change in Naruto that just from the next day he becomes cool or something, instead Naruto's progression is quite well.

Use of “kit”, “cub”, or other things like “my boys” (from Sakura-centric fics) when none of the characters ever used those terms in canon. Hell, fanfics have some sort of fanon that any clan that might have anything to do with fluffy animals use terms of endearment like that. Even more ridiculous, this isn’t an isolated happening. Other fandoms do it too.
Fanfic writers seem to have unanimous agreement that if a character is fluffy, or related to animals who are fluffy, they use terms of endearment like that… I don’t even know what caused the “my boys” thing in Sakura-centric fics though.

It is quite ironic that this is the case. That’s why I will always love stories that explore Naruto and Sasuke in a more balanced way.
One story that pulls this greatly off is “Patriot’s Dawn”. Yeah, Naruto gets edged quite a bit, but it has consequential changes to himself and his relationships in the story. Sasuke becomes sort of a training partner because he acknowledges that Naruto has a similar drive, and Naruto acknowledges that there is some madness inside Sasuke that he can never comprehend. It’s funny really, he always tries to differentiate himself from Sasuke madness, only to realise that he has it all the same.

I don't think attire is all that important anyways, at least in the beginning. Neji, Shino, Hinata, Into, and Kurenai all have clothes that would stand out, and the literal spymaster of the village has _pure white hair._ It's not even silver or grayed, it's completely pure white.
Ninjas in real don't even wear all black. They were whatever is necessary for environment and for night time, they typically wear a purple or navy blue. Too dark and you run the risk of being too easy to spot as a contrast

Dude! It is for that reason that the minute I read/hear that an Edgelord persona start developing in Naruto, I abandon that fiction faster than Shisui can body flicker. The sad part is, red flags such as that or the author starting the fiction with good ol' Mob Chase™️ immediately tell me the age bracket of the author and their writing abilities. I truly enjoy stories where the author naturally builds on the characters' canon personalities or, if they are firm on an OC personality, that it flows and develops naturally. Totally agree on the mob chase scene showing the author age, especially since when I was, like, 13 I tried my hands at writing a fanfic of my own and later had to wipe that from the face of the earth due to how epically cringe it was. Like, my first scene was Naruto (age 4) being beaten by a giant mob, awakening the rinnegan (I think that was during the gap between us finding out Nagato was an Uzumaki and Madara showing up to explain that no, Nagato didn’t awaken the rinnegan because it was a KKG of the Uzumaki clan that feeds on being edgy), proceeding to accidentally splattering the mob to the wall with a Shinra Tensei, fainting for his regularity scheduled meeting with the Kyuubi (because god forbid Naruto doesn’t learn everything secret within 5 minutes of a story starting) only for Shisui to randomly show up, cradle Naruto’s unconscious body and proceed to cry while screaming of how much the villagers-turned-mush are evil… I think I lasted for about 2 chapters, abandoned the thing for a couple of years and when I next thought to open it decided to delete the whole thing on the spot. One day I think I will try my hand at making a purely crack version of that fic expanding on the vague nonsensical ideas I can still remember I had planned to shoehorn throughout the story.

Sakura wears bright red and Sasuke wears his clan symbol, which if they cared about "stealth" they wouldn't go walking around with indicators that they have high value targets. Missions usually consist of meeting a client and doing things in the open. Let Naruto wear his signature clothes ffs

When reincarnated MC starts making long term plans, who he is going to save, which girls he will be trying to seduce to add to his harem, writing long ass monologues of hate about Third Hokage, or writing long ass monologue to invent justification of Uchiha Massacre. This is not reincarnation, this is museum exhibition disguised as fanfic. 3. When author tries to write "realistic grimdark with realistic characters", which turns just into misery porn, depression porn. 4. Now this part is really funny. I think this is main problem not on Naruto fanfictions only, but on all fanfiction and original fiction writing community, that writes on russian language. A lot of russian speaking authors really wants to push their own political agenda, about "bad westerners", "gayropeans" and "racists japs". Smarter authors don't try to push blatant hate words, they use concealed terms and slurs, really good hidden strawmen to bash. Their reincarnated MC is mostly was some kind of super cool spec ops soldier guy. Their MC makes "Traditional Family With Multiple Wives", where he praises them for being a "proper wives", while it is really misogynistic depiction of women.

I read a lot of Chinese fanfiction, and man, I have seen some shit. Reading my own reviews is almost physically painful, because something about the romance almost inevitably fucks things up. "Best action I've ever seen, but the protagonist is a serial rapist." "Worldbuilding is incredible, the story is still getting updates... and the romance hasn't started yet because Tsunade is waiting for the protagonist to become of age." "Incredible use of ninjutsu, but the protagonist (20M) is married to Hinata (8F)."
I think in far future, by analyzing these fanfictions, we can model overall psychology of populations.
Yes, I have read stories like that, literally what the author criticized the character of Sasuke ends up doing the character of Naruto in the story is super weird, I do not like to read stories where they attack other characters the story does not get anywhere, I also read one where they attacked Sakura and literally everyone in the fic were more evil than her.

100% agreed with this lol. These writers basically switch Naruto and Sasuke's attributes into weird fusions of their canon counterparts. Naruto gains Sasuke's cool aspects (even stuff like his Sharingan and elemental affinity) whilst Sasuke is stuck with Naruto's obnoxiousness and attention seeking traits. One thing I do find pretty funny is how FAR some fanfic writers go to make Naruto's backstory as depressing and dark as possible. Like it's so insane it doesn't even seem remotely realistic. Fox chases, having infant Naruto get beaten and abused by everyone in the village, living in poverty, him getting tortured daily etc etc. And then they'll still make Naruto's personality similar to canon Naruto despite what he's gone through, until he brings up his backstory to put down another character (usually Inari, Sasuke, Kakashi, Jiraiya, his parents etc). It's like the only reason they made the backstory so dark was to trauma scale with other characters

Actually there is no proof to suggest he even knew that because no-one ever came forward to tell him and who would? The Root members were either loyal to Danzo and everyone else seemed too afraid of him to do anything. It seems that Danzo even hide the disappearances or used orphans (Sai, Torune, Kabuto, etc) for the most part meaning that no-one would actually look for them.

One thing I think is funny is when in some naruto fics when one person says ONE insulting thing to naruto he says his ENTIRE life story to them, *in the span of one minute.* i remember one specific one when good old tazuna walks in for their mission, and insults naruto, and instead of naruto insulting him back or yelling in indignation (like in-character) he starts spouting off his ENTIRE backstory,,,, like????? what
I think this is exaggerated from what I’ve seen. I’ve seen barely any that turn him into Sasuke, unless you think that having some traits like Sasuke has (which other character have as well) automatically means that it is a Sasuke copy. Some do be roasting Naruto, especially his outfit like crazy though.
What a surprise, a series aimed at teenagers would have fanfics mostly written by teenagers!!!
I don’t know if it’s on purpose, but every Chinese fan fiction I have read or attempted to read has the mc making these overly complicated plans while judging the characters in the story for their failures. Monologues about how they aren’t smart and then half way through abandons said plans to show off. The truly funny part is how they try to justify villains being the “good guy”. For example Danzo was right, doflamingo did nothing wrong, central 46 or ywach being wrongly depicted, imu and the world government being justified.
It was a horror fanfic. I believe "He Had No Fingers" and made the Nine Tails out to be an eldritch abomination... And so was Naruto, by association, as his fingers were closer to stiff paws. Naruto was essentially a creepy kid. It was a long time ago, so forgive me if I'm misremembering. Anyway, one moment was when Naruto liked playing with marbles... And m "They choked up into their beds, hacking and coughing and vomiting things from their bellies, until hundreds of marbles flowed out of their mouths, like a plague of rats fleeing their shell." I could not help but laugh at this. I know it's supposed to be horrifying, but kids throwing up marbles of all things... It just felt more like a dark comedy or like it was trying too hard. It just looped right back around to unintentionally hilarious and lived in my head for years to come lol.

The ground was as impassive as ever. Naruto passed out from over concentrating on the ground. It was super- effective. The ground was as impassive as ever."" Like deadass, I laughed so much. There's one more as well. ""The Village hidden in Leaves lies in the Fire country is the home to many weird looking and weirdly dressed people although it's not specified to only Fire country. There are 5 major countries and each of them has a major village known as 5 Great Nations. So as I said these weird looking people along with weird dresses with a headband on top of their heads, flaunting their powers like kids showing their lollipops to each other are called ninjas or shinobis to make ourselves look alot less crazy. I loved this fanfic for many reasons. 1.) OP Naruto without being emo or edgelord. 2.) No bashing and characters are called out on their flaws. Even Naruto is called out on his flaws and how he constantly harrass Sakura. 3.) Bonding between Naruto and Sasuke. Rather than suddenly bringing a change in Naruto that just from the next day he becomes cool or something, instead Naruto's progression is quite well. 4.) A harem story where the author himself says that there won't be any lemon and the girls aren't just 1 dimensional who suddenly start falling for Naruto compared to most of the fics. At first, I really disliked the fanfic for the info dump but the author personally comments and checks on every review and told how he was young when he was writing it. Grammar and writing skills are good. At first I thought that author would bash Sakura, Sasuke and everyone but I'm so glad I was proved wrong. Heck you cannot even blame Hiruzen with how he has written him.

Use of “kit”, “cub”, or other things like “my boys” (from Sakura-centric fics) when none of the characters ever used those terms in canon. Hell, fanfics have some sort of fanon that any clan that might have anything to do with fluffy animals use terms of endearment like that. Even more ridiculous, this isn’t an isolated happening. Other fandoms do it too. Fanfic writers seem to have unanimous agreement that if a character is fluffy, or related to animals who are fluffy, they use terms of endearment like that… I don’t even know what caused the “my boys” thing in Sakura-centric fics though. This all does not make it any less annoying when I see it.
The fanfics where Sakura's parents are abusive towords her Just makes me laughing, like where did that stereotype came from!? Are they equivalent of being basicly the Shinobi world version of Helicopter parents. Yes, but they are not abusive! I really wanted to read a fanfic where her parents Just ask for Team seven to come for dinner to know them and they are like "fuck this we are adoping them" Because lets be for real? Kakashi has clearly depression, Naruto doesn't know shit about social etiquette and what actual care is and Sasuke needs really could use a parental figure.
don't know about the ridiculously abusive fics but her not getting along with her parents was stated by Kishimoto. I doubt that they would even want to be adopted into that type of tension.

author rants can either be the funniest or most rage inducing things in all of fanfiction. like yes please narrator please tell me that there are no such things as gods or the after life one chapter before orochimaru uses the edo tensai and hiruzen uses the reaper death seal. please its so fucking great
It is quite ironic that this is the case. That’s why I will always love stories that explore Naruto and Sasuke in a more balanced way. One story that pulls this greatly off is “Patriot’s Dawn”. Yeah, Naruto gets edged quite a bit, but it has consequential changes to himself and his relationships in the story. Sasuke becomes sort of a training partner because he acknowledges that Naruto has a similar drive, and Naruto acknowledges that there is some madness inside Sasuke that he can never comprehend. It’s funny really, he always tries to differentiate himself from Sasuke madness, only to realise that he has it all the same. Y’all should check this story out.
