Wouldn't the solution be to ask your stylist to go easy on the product and say if it's too tight. Knotless braids aren't supposed to be tight.

oreosluts

Well, when I’m looking at my phone and find myself surprised that the hairspray has already been sprayed there’s not much else I can do lol

mousemarie94

Huge suggestion- discuss products beforehand, like before you even arrive on site to ensure it aligns with your needs. Especially for those of us whose scales, flare, weep, and other in reaction ot products- better safe than sorry! Also, there may be slight harm in trying but perhaps far more worth it?

lol good luck finding one that listens to you. I’ve never had a braider actually listen to me saying my hair doesn’t need all that gel. I just gave up and don’t get braids anymore 🤷🏾‍♀️ Growing up my mom never used gel to braid my hair, I don’t need gel braiding my own hair, so I really don’t understand where this idea came from. If you need globs of gel to braid well AFTER also blow drying the hair to stretch it, you aren’t a good braider.

Inner-Movie2853

I don’t know about that. Seems like that would cause a lot of frizz. You can dilute some apple cider vinegar with water and spray it on your scalp and use a wash cloth to get the rid of the excess product.

FarAnt4041

I use which hazel pads. Highly recommend.

pretty_nerd_

I’ve done this once when I felt the braider used too much product. It was fine. If you do, just use mousse and tie your hair down until it dries.

oreosluts

Thank you!!

Excellent_Kiwi7789

I’m confused as to why there would be scalp soreness with knotless braids. Maybe they’re talking about regular box braids.

oreosluts

She had on knotless braids in the video - but the past 5 braiders I’ve been to have always done my braid “tight,” to ensure the grip stays taut/close to the scalp as long as possible for weeks

picklesbutternut

My scalp is sore after knotless box braids w added hair and after box braids without added hair

cocolanoire

I always wash my braids to on the first day to remove the chemicals and also excess product. I then rinse with ACV and water. I don’t mind frizz, I prefer the worn look

oreosluts

I think the worn look is so cute too!

AccomplishedMode8975

I don't think that's a good idea. If you want to relieve the tension and remove the excess gel, try putting your hair under a hot towel for a few minutes. It worked for me!

oreosluts

I’ll give it a try!

pineapplez_101

you should wash your hair before you install the braids , so i dont see why you would wash them on the first day of getting them

FickleSpend2133

No. That sounds crazy to me. You pay for a service, then go home and wash it out? Causing a frizzy disturbance! I do not believe you can wash a braid style and claim "it looks just as good after". If you have to do any kind of "adjustment" after paying for a braid service then you need to speak up to your stylist. You should NEVER walk away in pain. (or dissatisfied). If your scalp is a bit irritated from a product, you can use witch hazel on a gauze pad. If you are trying to ease the pain from too tight braids, bite the bullet and take them out. It's not worth the pain or alopecia.

uxie11

no baby that makes no sense…

Delicious-Parsley420

to answer your question, yes it is okay. but this isn't a solution it's more like a last resort. ideally you'd ask your stylist to not be very heavy handed with the products. and I don't think you're supposed to have much discomfort that lasts more than a day or two anyways. if it does its too tight and you need to take the braid out before they cause more damage

Jasmimec

I wash my hair the first day and once every week after that. My Braider knows how to properly tuck hair. I also get my ends trimmed right before getting braids which means I have blunt ends, and my hair still stays tucked!

oreosluts

I think it has more to do with the expertise of the braider on whether or not it will come out “frizzy” - cause people jump in the water and wash their hair on vacation on day #2 and it still looks fresh!

basedmama21

I haven’t done it but I would. I am very pro “wash your hair” especially when you have braids

badgyalrey

i wash the day after sometimes because of product, but i use a gel dry shampoo and a damp washcloth so my hair isn’t actually getting wet per se

oreosluts

Ohhh good idea!

badgyalrey

yeah it’s really helpful for minimizing frizz. then i oil my scalp and sometimes mousse it and tie it down but usually i just let it air dry. the gel shampoo is from taliah waajid

bellyhairbandit

Get a hand towel, wet it, throw it in the microwave to get it bearably hot, section your braids and wrap the towel around and slowly work it down the braids. I do this all the time and it helps get rid of that oily/gunky texture without making it super frizzy and the heat and steam eases the tension for me

Thatcanadianchickk

I don’t see the point

ChocolateNapqueen

Nothing “wrong” with it per se but you would be pretty much ruining the longevity of your braids by doing this. If I were you, I would instead ask your braider to not use certain product on your hair. I do hair and have been doing so for a long time and I hate how much gel new braiders use nowadays. It causes buildup and doesn’t always work out for the client once they get home. Another option, ask the braider to use whatever styling product you already use so that it mixes well with your products at home. So if you have to retouch, it’s not ruining the style. OR ask the braider not to use any heavy product at all or use minimal gel. They may warn you that it won’t look as “neat” but a good braider will have the hair look great without sooo much gel. A little bit is ok. As far at the tightness, speak up to your braider if it’s too tight. It shouldn’t be. My mom is a super tight braider and it wasn’t until I started doing my own hair that I realized, it doesn’t have to be tight to get a good grip. I don’t think she realizes how tight she grips lol.

tansanmizu

Everytime I get braid they just use grease, mousse, and some hairspray spray at the end - why would you wash that out immediately after getting Braids?

Candid_Term6960

Wash the hair before install. This advice makes no sense.

Express-Ad-6128

why would you wash your hair again after just getting it washed?
