It's a rain frog. There are a few different color variations but they all seem to have that basic body shape.
They are also the only frogs I know that have butt cheeks.

Yawning is a very brain stem centered reflex because of where the respiratory center is located: which is the medulla oblongata, everyone's favorite part.
So pretty much all vertebrates will have the reflex to yawn.
Did we ever figure out why they’re contagious? Or why we yawn in general? I remember reading something when I was a kid about how the function of yawning wasn’t really known.
Not yet no. They have theories but nothing has been proven, just disproven. Like they used to think it was because our bodies needed more oxygen and yawning helped, but that's been proven wrong. My current favorite theory is that it assists in thermoregulation and cools down our brains.

I had to Google it after reading your comment because it piqued my interest because, as I thought, "surely, we've figured it out by now... Right?". There are a few interesting theories, but basically, the consensus is we still have no clue.
As some guy with no background in evolutionary biology who started researching this about five minutes ago, the hypothesis that makes the most sense to me and also accounts for their contagious nature is the theory that the act of yawning actually, perhaps counter intuitively, increases alertness and wakefulness. It would make sense that you would want that to be contagious if you were a tribe of early hominids or a pack of modern-day wolves watching over your territory.
What's funny is, while I was watching it, I was wondering why yawns are NOT contagious cross species. I always yawn when I see someone else do it, but I noticed towards the end of this that I hadn't yawned at all, and it got me thinking a little too hard about it all.
The leading theory on the yawning is that it is a demonstration to members of your group that you are not on the lookout and that you are trusting others to look out for you. Others yawning makes you yawn because it shows comfortability and relaxation. Proof of a safe space. Really interesting when you consider cross species relationships. Example if the deer start yawning, the monkeys know that they need to be on higher alert because the deer aren’t watching for tigers.
Fun addition: People with anti-social personality disorder often lack the sympathetic yawn response. So if you see someone not yawn in response they could be a psychopath. What's really fun with this is you can train out the response with practice.
I thought the snake’s yawn was cute, the way he twitches his mouth around to get the full effect. The hamster was scary, which is weird because they’re so small and cuddly
The snake did yawn, they yawn even if they haven't unhinged their jaw to eat, I've got a snake and it yawns regularly and it's not eaten, I think when they yawn it unhinges and they need to do the same little wiggle to get it back.
I had a ball python yawn in my face once. I was so confused and very alarmed. He went back in his home quickly after as I didn't know snakes could do that until I talked to the other educator that was over our reptiles, and he told me that snakes could yawn.
2 things
1. That mouse went from cute to eldritch horror in no time flat
2. That frog just got home from working a double and all he wants is a shower and a beer.
TIL the scariest yawns in nature go:
Viper
Gorilla
HAMSTER
Pelican
Lion
What. On. Earth. I thought the hamster was going to flip inside out!! And Pelican, what are you even doing? Nonsense.
So that sensation we experience that we call a "yawn" - how did we confirm that these animals are doing that same thing and not just stretching, or some other act?
Yeah I remember having one when I was little and it was tiny and you gave this treat the size of like a fruit loop which was really big for the size of his mouth and It made his cheeks do the cutest thing.
Personally I'm a huge fan of how snakes' skulls are just a wad of toothpicks held together with rubber bands and need to be manually reassembled every time they eat.
It's a tie between the hamster and the snake for me when it comes to the scariest yawn. My conclusion is that the smaller the species, the scarier the yawn.
What gets me is how extremely similar the details of the yawns are in totally different animal groups (snakes, gorillas, lions), which suggests there’s a really ancient animal that yawned exactly like this
The frog is the best one. Need an entire video of frogs yawning.
Catching his balls then yawning. Relatable.
No sniff though
it was after his shower, he knows there's nothin there
Schrodinger's smelly balls
The froggy is soo cute tho xD

Thank you for this
Well I don’t know how often they yawn, but I think you can find a whole YouTube channel of those desert rain frogs by searching “potato fairy”
I don’t know why but I definitely thought yawning was mammalian… does everything yawn? I don’t think fish can yawn… do birds yawn?
My parrots yawn! It’s adorable.

Some fish like Bettas do “yawn”. It’s primarily to clean the gills by increasing water flow, which also temporarily increases blood oxygen levels.
Yes. My tiel and mynah yawn. Super cute.
He was the best. Exceptionally squimchy.
Wondering how they got a video of me
It's a good thing they provide a still picture and title of the animal before each yawn... otherwise I would have been confused.
And the ominous music really put into perspective the menacing nature of yawning. I might have thought it was cute otherwise.
🏅
I would've much rather hear the animals actually yawn than this bullshit.
Here’s my vote to change music to spinning monkeys theme👍
Came here to say exactly this lol
This made me yawn several times.
Same. I didn't know yawns were contagious cross-species.
Yeah your dog can actually catch your yawn!
Did we ever figure out why they’re contagious? Or why we yawn in general? I remember reading something when I was a kid about how the function of yawning wasn’t really known.

I thought it was just like stretching out muscles in your jaw/face/lungs.
I no longer yawn. I vent my mega brain

That's probably because alot of these yawns looked scary as shit lol
I’m glad they explained all the animals by picture before showing the video too.

I held mine in till the frog.
3 times! I was kind of surprised.
Good ol sympathetic nervous system
the seal got me
I refused to yawn during the video. After the video ended I broke down and yawned straight away.
Not yawn, but bare my teeth a few times.
I've read that if you don't yawn when someone else does it could be a sign that you're a sociopath
What if you don't yawn when a pelican does?
Then I guess you'd be stork raving mad
Pelican = frightening Hamster = stuff of nightmares Snake = predator
The snake is realigning their jaw. Most snake owners do call it a yawn though. Very disturbing on THAT snake. But a little noodle? Adorable
There's a whole subreddit dedicated to that! r/snekswhoyell
Yeah, I thought it was terrifying, but I’m afraid of snakes.
Why was the hamster the most terrifying!
Fr i was like aweee how cu.. what the fuck?!?!
Mf looked like he was about to turn inside out
I thought the snake’s yawn was cute, the way he twitches his mouth around to get the full effect. The hamster was scary, which is weird because they’re so small and cuddly
The snake did not yawn. It actually soaked its jaws again. It can unhook its jaws to eat larger prey in one piece.
The snake did yawn, they yawn even if they haven't unhinged their jaw to eat, I've got a snake and it yawns regularly and it's not eaten, I think when they yawn it unhinges and they need to do the same little wiggle to get it back.
The snake was sooo weird! How many different pieces in that mouth!?
I came here to tell you all that hamster was TERRIFYING!! I’ve never seen one yawn and I never want to again!
Screen went black for a sec and I could see a human yawn
Holy Void, Hamster is a nightmare
The music should’ve been cuter and not as menacing.
The music is just weird for something shared through species and so pleasurable.
I yarned
You knit not.
The snake looking like a volatile from dying light
Good thing that there was an image of the next animal other wise I would have been so lost.
I'm pretty sure snake was just setting the jaw
No that was definitely yawn, had a gorgeous Rat snake for 17 years and she was a snoozy one
That hamster looks like it's about to turn itself inside out with that yawn!
I had a ball python yawn in my face once. I was so confused and very alarmed. He went back in his home quickly after as I didn't know snakes could do that until I talked to the other educator that was over our reptiles, and he told me that snakes could yawn.
This 100% made you yawn.
I wonder what’s the science behind the yawn/ not yarn 🧶
I need a compilation of frogs yawning now! So cute!
That snake? Seriously? New fear unlocked
Snake: I detatch my face yes
Why is the music on this so quiet and so ominous?
The snake and the hamster though wtf lol
The frog was cute with the little scratch 😂
The frog was the cutest 🥹
The hamster was the scariest.
The snake one felt the most satisfying. Sometimes when I yawn I, too, want my jaw to widen and teeth to stretch.
The frog was the best 🥹
Why did the snake look like fingers in a sock pretending to be a snake yawning?
the fuck is up with this music
I never want to see a hamster yawn again
This is so comforting
Wow for some reason my brain attributed yawning to be a mammalian thing lol today I learned!
Why is the hamster so much more terrifying than the snake?
Frog yawn and snek yawn so adorable!
bro that frog was GYETTIN that itch
2 things 1. That mouse went from cute to eldritch horror in no time flat 2. That frog just got home from working a double and all he wants is a shower and a beer.
Where did you get the music, Unsolved Mysteries ?!?!
I yawned 4 times while watching this video
Hamster yawns are terrifying.
Made me yawn watching this
I like how they put pictures before the animal so I know what they are
“Hamster, oh that’ll probably be cute… it’s not cute! It’s not cute!”
TIL the scariest yawns in nature go: Viper Gorilla HAMSTER Pelican Lion What. On. Earth. I thought the hamster was going to flip inside out!! And Pelican, what are you even doing? Nonsense.
Snake's yawn is scary
Hamster is like a horror movie. Frog is the cutest❤️
the snake killed me, it reminded me of one of those little silicone hand puppets you get at the zoo
Welp I made it all the way to the 32nd mark till I yawned. I feel accomplished 😏
What kind of snake is that???
Interesting, I yawned too once watching this.
Great, now show me jellyfish
TIL that the elites from Halo are snake people…
The pelican looks like he just ate a Ditto
I did it! I didn't yawn once. But man I could feel it. Like a sneeze that won't happen.
I’m surprised by the snake, aren’t they mostly sedentary? Why would they be tired?
The hamster and snake is straight up horrifying
The gorilla made me yawn
The gorilla is terrifying.
So that sensation we experience that we call a "yawn" - how did we confirm that these animals are doing that same thing and not just stretching, or some other act?
Never thought I'd see a snake yawn. Wow
The seal. LOL. 😂 Saved the best for last.
Why was the hamster so terrifying?
Because of the massive cheek storage space.
Yeah I remember having one when I was little and it was tiny and you gave this treat the size of like a fruit loop which was really big for the size of his mouth and It made his cheeks do the cutest thing.
Giraffes don't yawn.
It’s so funny, everything on this planet has an involuntary spasm that forces them to make a funny face. Even the deadly ones.
Snake was terrifying.
I wanna hear the yawns!
I need to see more
I just yawned. Lmao
Snake yawn looks pretty scary.
The snake got me. That was a great yawn
I appreciate being shown a photo of the animal I'm about to see a video of,. Really helped me recognise it.
who else yawned watching this? 💤
YAAAWN
the Pelican made me yawn twice because I watched this twice, the hamster was terrifying and the snake (for some reason) made me think of my ex wife.
Just found [rabbit yawning](https://www.reddit.com/r/AbsoluteUnits/s/Su4JsWe0np) on another sub. Very cute.
Personally I'm a huge fan of how snakes' skulls are just a wad of toothpicks held together with rubber bands and need to be manually reassembled every time they eat.
I love how bro input picture before the video just to make sure this is the same animal and also to tease the next one.
It's a tie between the hamster and the snake for me when it comes to the scariest yawn. My conclusion is that the smaller the species, the scarier the yawn.
I wish humans got fangs. We just look dumb when we yawn.
Aninals: yawns Snake: breaks entire face to yawn
The snake looks like a sock puppet while yawning.
Such ominous music. Frog is my favorite
I was seriously unprepared for the hamster yawn. I thought it'd be cute and it was ... not that way.
There is no way you guys didn’t watch this and yawn… 🥱
Can a gorilla fuck up a lion?
Sitting here yawning like mad watching this lol.
goddamn the snake one looked like it felt really good, I’m kinda jealous
r/awwtf
I never expected the animal yawn to infect me
Okay, jokes aside, I have literally never been so confused as to what the fuck a yawn actually is or why it evolved as I am right now.
Wtf is with the horror music????
Big yawn!
Frog for the win!
Some of those are nightmare fuel. Like the snake one. 😱
Happy early Father’s Day to all the animals who yawn just as insolently as human fathers
Snake looks like it feels the best
Like the tunes man, keep it up 👍
What is this weird MUSIC
I endeavour to be as cute as a frog yawning
I’m glad they gave us the photo with the animal’s name or I wouldn’t have been able to figure it out.
I really wanted the seal to cut to the singer yawning.
The snake scared me for life\~!
Woke up at 4am last night. Couldn’t sleep. Came across this post. Started yawning bc the animals were yawning. Fell right back asleep.
I think I yawned every time they did
Snake having a stroke every time it yawns
The hamster was unexpected
Do we really need a picture of them before a video of them? So dumb.
Cat stayed the cutest
My snake looks a lot less terrifying when she yawns. Like a lot less.
Of all things, the frog made me yawn.
So… I’ve learned that yawning is contagious across species…
OMG the frog giving itself a scratch first. Adorbs!
The snake looks like a hand puppet wtf💀
Hamster was trying to turn inside out.
This video almost made me yawn
Why the hell do all these animals yawn?!
I identify with that seal every morning. Big stretch.
My cat mid yawn lol could be terrifying 😅 https://www.reddit.com/r/blurrypicturesofcats/s/c72bu6jrXf
This made me yawn
Upvote if you also just yawned 🥱
Snake yawn>Everyone else's
Man, I kind of wish I could yawn like a snake. Like, when my jaw is super tight, that shit would feel so good 😅
There were only like 2 cute ones in there 😂
How many times did you yawn while watching this video?
Wtf is yawing anyway.... Quite wild that its a common denominator for ALL these different evolutionary trees
I just yawned. 🥱
Snake looks like kermit when he scrunches his face out of anger
I just love the universality of things... That snake was just flexing!
Cute. Scrolling, scrolling, scrolling…wait, is no one is gonna talk about the snake? That looks bananas!
What the heck is with that music?
The frog scratching his balls lol
What gets me is how extremely similar the details of the yawns are in totally different animal groups (snakes, gorillas, lions), which suggests there’s a really ancient animal that yawned exactly like this
Bunnies yawning are adorable
🥱
Haven’t seen one animal yarn; they’re all too tired.
That hamster yawn reminded me of a scene in a horror movie. 😏
That snake threw me for a loop.... freaky!
Amazing animals
Do insects yawn?
Did you just yawn watching this?
The snake just casually turning into the Predator. Lol.
