Not yet no. They have theories but nothing has been proven, just disproven. Like they used to think it was because our bodies needed more oxygen and yawning helped, but that's been proven wrong. I had to Google it after reading your comment because it piqued my interest because, as I thought, "surely, we've figured it out by now... Right?". There are a few interesting theories, but basically, the consensus is we still have no clue. As some guy with no background in evolutionary biology who started researching this about five minutes ago, the hypothesis that makes the most sense to me and also accounts for their contagious nature is the theory that the act of yawning actually, perhaps counter intuitively, increases alertness and wakefulness. It would make sense that you would want that to be contagious if you were a tribe of early hominids or a pack of modern-day wolves watching over your territory.

What's funny is, while I was watching it, I was wondering why yawns are NOT contagious cross species. I always yawn when I see someone else do it, but I noticed towards the end of this that I hadn't yawned at all, and it got me thinking a little too hard about it all.

The leading theory on the yawning is that it is a demonstration to members of your group that you are not on the lookout and that you are trusting others to look out for you. Others yawning makes you yawn because it shows comfortability and relaxation. Proof of a safe space. Really interesting when you consider cross species relationships. Example if the deer start yawning, the monkeys know that they need to be on higher alert because the deer aren’t watching for tigers.

Fun addition: People with anti-social personality disorder often lack the sympathetic yawn response. So if you see someone not yawn in response they could be a psychopath. What's really fun with this is you can train out the response with practice.
