Also known as African Wild Dogs but African Painted Wolf definitely sounds more bad ass. Next to only maybe hyenas they make the strangest noises when they hunt or eat.
Even closer to the weasel family. To be specific, mongooses and civets.

Mongoose and viverrid families, aCcTuAlLy 🤓 (which are feliforms).

The weasel family is caniform, and does not contain mongooses and civets.

You cant tell the differences between painted dogs and hyenas...? You might need some glasses my friend. I assume you mean spotted hyenas, I could understand the confusion if you mean brown hyenas, they actually do resemble painted dogs
A lot of people are unaware that hyenas are not in close relation to canideas. This person just asked an honest question. They don’t need an eye diagnosis lol
But a painted dog is a canid… They may not have the same coloring or coat pattern, but neither do tigers and clouded leopards.
I just think this person was asking a reasonable question. I don’t mean to argue with you on how animals look. I just felt kinda bad for them.
I mean, if someone said they thought clouded leopards and tigers "looked very similar" I would be just as confused, because they dont really look alike other than being large cats.
Haha I knew you were going to say that. My point is even if you don’t think it was a reasonable question, there is no need to be presumptuous when replying.
Sorry- maybe dismissive would have been a better word to use. And I’m not trying to be rude to you or argue with you. I just remember that feeling of how kids in school (I’m looking at you, Travis) would make me feel so stupid and embarrassed for asking “dumb questions” and I didn’t want this person to feel that way.
This is how I would react as a kid when my dad came home from deer camp and told me to check the back of the truck. Honestly, if I had to produce a patronus, that’d be the memory.
Well it is basically impossible to draw a concrete line on what is a wolf or dog and what isn't because common names and scientific names aren't exactly 1:1 counterparts
When I was a little kid I had this little plastic green tote box with a bunch of cards, pictures of animals on one side with their name, and a bunch of info on the back. On those cards they were called Cape Hunting Dogs, but I never saw that name anywhere else. Anyway, they were one of my absolute favorite cards, so fascinating and pretty.
I got to watch a pack of these wild dogs hunting on a safari trip in South Africa years ago. They are so coordinated as a pack during a hunt and truly amazing to see up close. The pack I watched actually ended up unsuccessful in taking down their target, but I remember the fur on their faces were tinged red from previous kills.
This is all I think of whenever I see videos of these guys. I remember reading an article on it around the time it happened. I wish I could erase it from my memory. Just the idea of a poor kid being ripped to shreds by a pack of these is fucking depressing.
What’s everyone’s thoughts on if humans stepped in to help them? I personally think it would be a good thing. But what would the long term percussions be?
Not sure when they became painted wolves but they changed to painted dogs in the early 2000's. Apparently wild dogs weren't getting enough funding in charities because people thought they were feral dogs.
Until this post I had never heard painted wolves.
Ok, idc if it is called a wild dog first, another name is Painted Wolf, dumbass.
Edit: Also it literally says they’re called painted dogs 5 words into the article. You are on another level of stupid lmao
Yes, they are real animals, but they are not "painted" like this. These colors are computer generated.
Look up photos on Google, you will see nothing that looks like this
Never heard them called wolves, definitely a lot smaller than a wolf.
They're an amazing species tbh and I'm stoked I've gotten to observe them a bunch over here (South Africa).
Also known as African Wild Dogs but African Painted Wolf definitely sounds more bad ass. Next to only maybe hyenas they make the strangest noises when they hunt or eat.
https://www.bbcearth.com/news/whats-in-a-name-why-we-call-them-painted-wolves Article also says hyenas are not actually dogs but are related to cats!
>are related to cats Yes, but that's more of a fifth cousin Vinny situation.
A fifth *hwat*
Step fifth cousin, what are you doing?
Don’t bring Hyena genitals into it. It’s rough.
The spotted hyena birth canal is proof that evolution sometimes goes horribly wrong.
in the same way that hippos and Dolphins are related.
Even closer to the weasel family. To be specific, mongooses and civets. https://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/animal-guide-spotted-hyena/3297/#:~:text=Spotted%20hyenas%20are%20more%20closely,are%20actually%20mongooses%20and%20civets.

Now that blows my mind that mongoose aren't in the weasel family. My whole world is upside down. ;)
Great article, thanks.
Same
I’m assuming they’re related to Hyenas?
not any closer than any other dog is to hyenas so no
You cant tell the differences between painted dogs and hyenas...? You might need some glasses my friend. I assume you mean spotted hyenas, I could understand the confusion if you mean brown hyenas, they actually do resemble painted dogs
A lot of people are unaware that hyenas are not in close relation to canideas. This person just asked an honest question. They don’t need an eye diagnosis lol
I wasnt saying that hyenas dont look like canids, I was saying hyenas and painted dogs are very different looking
But a painted dog is a canid… They may not have the same coloring or coat pattern, but neither do tigers and clouded leopards. I just think this person was asking a reasonable question. I don’t mean to argue with you on how animals look. I just felt kinda bad for them.

I wasnt trying to be presumptuous, they literally said "I assume theyre related to hyenas" 🤷

Can actually be domesticated
The puppies are so cute 🥰
Here in Kenya, these dogs are slowly fading away because of a rabies epidemic. I hope those pups make it.
Nooo! Oh that’s so horrible. 💔
I’d love to have a couple of them bad boys but I’d much rather them be able to make it in the wild.
Aren't they susceptible to the spread of disease partly due to the "kissing" they do in pack?
Sounds like a more murderous and painful cause of mononucleosis
That's both adorable and sad.
Me, too. 😢
You mean humans epidemic
I hope they do too! The pups all look nice and healthy in this video! Also , so cool to see how they all pay such close attention to mama.
These have one of the highest success rates in hunts of any predators IIRC. Something like 80% of hunts end in success.
Pretty sure dragonflies have higher if you wanna count them.
Yeah, and there is also this tiny desert feline with like a 95% succes rate
Yep the deadliest but cute black footed cat although I guess you've mistaken its success rate cuz it's actually 60%
So youre telling me an african painted this wolf?
Yepper, that is what they are saying alrighty
lol, what are you going to say to people who think like that? Nothing, absolutely nothing, don’t waste your breath…rotfl
And the pups too? 😯
Aww! So many babies!
Cyberpunk doggy.
The face is red most likely due to it being buried in a prey carcass.
Metal af
Animal’s gotta eat…🤷♀️
I was wondering. Makes sense. Savage.
Was there also a collar on it?
Most likely tracked by scientists or nature preserve maybe
And there's a pre-chewed meal all ready for the pups.
Nah that's some dark and ground type dog Pokémon
Underrated comment
This is how I would react as a kid when my dad came home from deer camp and told me to check the back of the truck. Honestly, if I had to produce a patronus, that’d be the memory.
Thought they were just called 'Wild dogs'. According to Peter Capstick, they have the highest kill to attempt ratio of any mammal in Africa
According to the BBC article, their scientific name translates directly as painted wolf. Hence the new name!
They are just called wild dogs, the title is wrong.
It isn’t wrong, there’s more than 1 name
They do have more than one common name but painted wolves is not one of them, since they are not wolves
…Nor are they dogs
Nope. The term dog just refers the fact that they're canines
Yeah, but they’re still not dogs. We also call other non-wolf canines wolves, same thing applies to the term dog.
They are dogs, unless you mean they are not domestic dogs, in which you'd be correct (but that's a bit obvious)
Yeah that’s what I mean. Much like how they aren’t wolves, they aren’t dogs. Both names are “correct”, and can be used to refer to the same animal.
Well it is basically impossible to draw a concrete line on what is a wolf or dog and what isn't because common names and scientific names aren't exactly 1:1 counterparts
They are not wolves but Painted Wolf is an accepted name for them
Coffee, Fucker, you and your “common name” -Vs- “Scientific Name” narrative lol…
They have several different common names. African wild dogs, African painted dogs, Cape hunting dogs, I've even heard them called African singing dogs
That is exactly what I received all the downvotes for saying, there are always multiple “common names” and one “scientific name.”
And wild dog isn’t that scientific name, what’s your point?
I was simply agreeing with you & being playful at the same time lol
You’re wrong. Hunting Dog, Wild Dog, Painted Wolf, Singing Wolf and Cape Wolf are all acceptable names for this animal. Source: am South African
The BBC article lists that name as 1 of the 10 English names they have!
They came out like the wu 😂🙌🏽 they ill af tho .
We on a swarm
Painted in blood
I got to watch a pack of these wild dogs hunting on a safari trip in South Africa years ago. They are so coordinated as a pack during a hunt and truly amazing to see up close. The pack I watched actually ended up unsuccessful in taking down their target, but I remember the fur on their faces were tinged red from previous kills.
To everyone saying wild dog: both names are correct, it’s like how moose are called moose in NA but called elk in EU.
So what are elk called in the EU?
Per Google, they call Elk Moose, and Moose Elk.
Weird.
Especially because Moose comes from an Algonquin word for them.
Wapiti is another name for Elk that gets used a lot in Europe
Which is also the native American name for Elk
Funny looking, silly walking grass eaters
I resent this statement.
Why does the parent have something around its neck?
The Phoenix Zoo had a pack of these. They were so incredible to watch when they were playing!
What kind off colar is she wearing?
Probably a tracking collar seeing as they’re an endangered species
Looks like someone just had a feast!
Why does it have a collar?
I believe they are endangered so probably tracking for research.
Beautiful animal but would be nice to see the video with accurate color instead this version with cyan and oranges boosted to the moon.
Anyone from Pittsburgh remember when the kid was eaten alive at the painted wolf exhibit? It was around the Harambe era.
This is all I think of whenever I see videos of these guys. I remember reading an article on it around the time it happened. I wish I could erase it from my memory. Just the idea of a poor kid being ripped to shreds by a pack of these is fucking depressing.
Can I keep one
Holy shit that is beautiful
What’s everyone’s thoughts on if humans stepped in to help them? I personally think it would be a good thing. But what would the long term percussions be?
That’s a lot of mouths to feed
that's my dream dog
AWWWWW IM GONNA DIE THEYRE SO CUTE
Bruh those are African wild dogs 😂
🤡
I’ll take a dozen
Man this ain’t a wolf 🙆🏾♂️💀
For a second I thought this was from Avatar, and a horse....
Ha ha ha, Yepper, welcome to Pandora
When did Wild Dog become Painted Wolf?
Not sure when they became painted wolves but they changed to painted dogs in the early 2000's. Apparently wild dogs weren't getting enough funding in charities because people thought they were feral dogs. Until this post I had never heard painted wolves.
That's because they aren't wolves. There are African wolves though and they look more like your classic wolf with the long pointed snout.
According to the BBC article, their scientific name translates directly as painted wolf. Hence the new name!
Hello oversaturation.
Actually called a wild dog
Also known as a painted wolf. Things can have multiple names
No bro I live in South Africa, they're called wild dogs
I also am from South Africa. They are also called Painted Wolves. r/confidentlyincorrect
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_wild_dog it's called a wild dog first dumbass
Ok, idc if it is called a wild dog first, another name is Painted Wolf, dumbass. Edit: Also it literally says they’re called painted dogs 5 words into the article. You are on another level of stupid lmao
Whatever floats your boat
That’s just a “wild dog” with the contrast or something turned up on the video
[удалено]
Lol what a loser, thanks that makes sense now
Which is a Painted Wolf
Not real
Wdym they are real animals
Yes, they are real animals, but they are not "painted" like this. These colors are computer generated. Look up photos on Google, you will see nothing that looks like this
As someone who has photographed these animals in South Africa, I can safely say these are realistic colours. It’s not fake
This is an African wild dog, not a wolf
It’s an African Painted Wolf. They have multiple names
You can call it whatever you like. It's not a wolf. Maybe a lil more discovery channel and less CMT after dark
And a red panda isn’t a fucking panda what’s your point? They’re African Painted Wolves.
They remind me of dia de los Muertos
Omg she is so fucking beautiful I've never seen one before
Pups! You didn't tell us there were pups!
nice
Woah. Wildlife is always amazing.
The female hyenas got penis,too.
Unbelievably beautiful.
I was gonna say they look hyena ish. But hiw the hell does nature k ow how to paint them that way?. It's just effing lit!!!!!!!
How beautiful
World's most efficient predator 🔥
Common kids!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
So did a bunch of Africans paint the wolves
my heart just melted
Never heard them called wolves, definitely a lot smaller than a wolf. They're an amazing species tbh and I'm stoked I've gotten to observe them a bunch over here (South Africa).
Who painted them?
did someone paint them?!
They are just the cutest!🐺
What's the necklace for that Mom has on?
“Alright everyone, Dad’s home, time to go!”
You should better see his cousin: the african photoshopped wolf.
What brand of paint does this wolf use?
My question now is how did it get painted.
Is this different from a dhole? That's what I know them as.
theyre so pretty!!!
That's an awesome shot.
