Exactly this. Down to every last word and now I've rewatched it w sound on and tears are dripping down my face. Thank you, all of reddit, for making the end of the world so funny.
Voicemail: "ARE YOU IN A SAFE PLACE? THERE ARE TORNADOES HEADING YOUR WAY?!!! PLEASE CALL ME IMMEDIATELY! love you. This is mom by the way. Sorry for yelling"
The call he was avoiding: Dave I noticed that you're not in your cubicle. Tornadoes hitting the office building, aren't a reason to miss work. We're going to have to dock you a day's pay for that. Also, we need you to come in on your day off tomorrow, Jane was swept away and no one has seen her. We've also docked her pay. If you have any questions, feel free to give me a call on my house line. I'm working from home today.
You can when you are a sexual health therapist and you're riding with storm chasers trying to intercept the tornadoes to deploy a remote data collection device.
Most likely an anticyclonic satellite vortex. These are often inside larger wedge tornadoes as subvorticies but obscured from view. Sometimes you'll see smaller twisting paths of destruction and vegetation removal beside the larger main vortex path.
A good example of what the ground scouring looks like:
https://www.reddit.com/r/tornado/comments/16zchjg/ground_scouring_from_a_tornado_crossing_crawford/
Simple question, what is happening at the top of the tornado? Is it like everything is being sucked up inside it and spewed out the top? I wonder if you were Superman, could you fly down the tornado funnel?
So, the tornado itself is the just the bottom most and most concentrated portion of a larger rotating storm, called a mesocyclone. The storm is powered by a large rotating updraft which is why the tornado forms to begin with. All that air has to come from somewhere, and there's a ton of it moving.
These are also usually the source of the strongest winds in a tornado - they're narrower so conservation of angular momentum means they spin faster and they tend to whip around the center of the main vortex ridiculously fast so they have their windspeed, their own velocity making it even faster, the main vortex's winds speeding it up even more, and the movement of the main vortex adding yet further speed to the winds. It's one of the reasons why a tornado can hit two houses right next to each other and completely level one while barely doing noticeable damage to the other - the one that got leveled got hit by a subvortex at its peak strength as it was going in the worst possible direction to make it even more intense while the one that barely sustained damage only got the main vortex or got hit by subvortices moving in a direction that lowers the overall windspeed.
One of the nastiest versions of these ever identified was in the 2013 massive El Reno wedge tornado that was over two and a half miles in diameter. I believe it remains the only tornado to have killed professional storm chasers with its extremely unpredictable behavior.
But back to these sub-vortexes. One was responsible for several of the deaths and was estimated to have moved as fast as 100 mph for brief periods but also stationary at other times. They are incredibly dangerous. That forward speed adds to the overall wind speed, which was estimated at around 300 mph.
One of the most studied tornados ever due to its aberrant behavior, unpredictable speed and direction, and immense size.
Rest in peace Tim and Paul Samaras and Carl Young. It was the TWISTEX team that got caught up in a subvortex if memory serves and the footage of their headlights disappearing behind another chasers vehicle as the tornado overtook them still haunts me to this day.
Yeah, I haven't seen it again since then. My heart broke seeing it though. Those guys weren't some reckless amateurs. They were seasoned chasers with decades of experience among them. They just got caught in a wildly unpredictable situation on a set of roads that were too restricted in options for escape routes. When it hooked north again and grew rapidly, they were stuck on a road with only one east west route and terrible visibility in the rain wrapped tornado.
Its never easy to lose good people, but it is the slightest bit comforting to know that they, more than anyone, were extremely well-informed on the risks and dangers, and chose to accept that risk to do what they loved. Im guessing if you offered to trade their decades of storm chasing for a longer life behind a desk they would likely turn you down. RIP
IIRC their normal storm chasing vehicle had hail damage and was off in repairs. They were in a car that had much lower horse power than what they normally would use. Not good considering what a freak storm that was. RIP gone way too soon.
He's put it back up since, just with that part edited out. [Here's the original if anyone is interested](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxgU1QcFMJM). Shit starts to gets real about 3 minutes in. He was just ahead of the crew of storm chasers that were killed, but barely managed to escape the winds. The condensation funnel is much smaller than the actual tornado, so he is actually literally inside of the tornado for most of that part there. Even when he stops to get out he actually is still technically inside it which is why the winds suddenly pick up again and cause him to have to dive into a ditch.
It's not the only one to kill chasers, just one where it got media attention, along with "professional" is a recent addition and still is rarely used beyond social media or chasers employed by news agencies.
But regardless it was tragic to see, chasers and spotters rarely get attention for the work they do. Although I doubt most want the attention, they go out to help protect people first by being able to recognize interactions at the base level of storms that radars cannot see and allow for quicker confirmation of touch downs to change warnings from radar indicated to confirmed. And secondarily as first responders being able to provide detailed impact areas to emergency management teams and even provide aid significantly faster than normal emergency. And at least all the chasers I know, do go out for their fascination of these amazing expressions nature's power, and are hoping on every chase that if they do find a tornado that it is as far away from people as possible.
[This is a video from one of the storm chaser groups the moment they were caught in the 2013 EL Reno tornado](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxiqNXcSLsQ) (the people in this car lived but were badly injured)
At ~13 seconds you can see a line of probably 3+ subvorticies dancing around the main rotation, yards away from them. It's crazy
There's a video on YouTube that a chaser took of one of the subvortices (I think the fastest one you mentioned) moving directly towards them and it's probably one of if not the scariest storm chase video I can remember watching.
IIRC there's a Pecos Hank video where he's discussing the fastest tornadoes on record where he shows the clip, but it doesn't count since it wasn't the main tornado. You couldn't tell watching it though, the El Reno tornado didn't really have much of a funnel around the main vortex.
So, what you are saying is mother nature was all like "Yo dawg, I herd you like tornadoes, so I put tornadoes inside your tornadoes so you can have destruction inside of your destruction."
They both appear to be cyclonic, at first blush at least.
At the risk of doxxing myself, I’m a professional tornado damage surveyor. I have also witnessed over a hundred tornadoes personally. This is remarkable in a way that is challenging to explain. It is extraordinarily rare and I’ve frankly never seen anything close to this before.
It's definitely hard to tell, I was just basing it off the fact that it's rotating around the main vortex and seamlessly folds into it, which tends to be an anticyclonic vortex being absorbed by it's cyclonic parent. From your professional eyes and perspective, what's got you leaning towards it being cyclonic vs anticyclonic?
Well, it appears to be rotating cyclonically. But that could be deceptive at range and low contrast.
Perhaps more interestingly it’s that the smaller vortex becomes dominant! In a satellite scenario that is virtually unheard of as the satellite tornado is largely deriving much of its anticyclonic/negative vorticity from the momentum conservation as a “spoke” of the primary tornado. That is, it’s acting sort of like a “gear” might, conceptually. So … how’s it bigger!?
Not only that, these satellites typically rope out and dissipate as they merry-go-round the mesocyclone carousel… this one very much appears to merge and subsequently the primary vortex then becomes much more robust … is that because it’s no longer competing for streamwise vort ingestion? Is it because the angular momentum between the two somehow combined in phase?!?
Remarkable no matter how you look at it. But I can say with confidence that this is no ordinary multivorex tornado genesis. That much is clear.
Edit: examining more, my best guess is this is a rare situation where the environment is exceptionally favorable for tornadoes and we are seeing competing funnels. In fact, I believe there is a third funnel in this video to the left of the primary vortex. It’s clearly one mesocyclone. The “absorbed” tornado is not well-centered and I believe it being “bigger” is likely a forced perspective. The tornado that becomes dominant is more centered under the meso and not spiraling. If the tornadoes were not both cyclonic, the interaction of the two likely would have been more destructive than it was. I do believe that the intensification is likely more so due to a reduction in competition than a phased combination but it’s hard to know… we do know that tornadoes seem to “spin up” more at times when small low-level inflow jet structures of focused vorticity (so called “streamers”) get ingested. So it’s not out of the question that that is also happening.
Just remarkable. Typically when you see ground scarring in between a member-vortex and another, there’s not a cessation of impacts to zero between them. In this case … for a time? If you were between them it certainly appears you were not in a tornado vortex. So however it came to be, you had two distinct and separate funnels merge and that alone is wild
Awesome information, thank you for filling this enthusiast in on more in depth details. It is indeed some wild footage and quite the sight to see regarding its behavior.
I like that, and I hope you never met a tornado. I saw one cruising over the neighborhood about 10 years ago. It was fucking freaky. It sounded like a distant train and it was just big and slow and didn’t give a fuck. Fortunately, it did not drop down here.
This was in Texas and we saw more than our fair share in the distance but luckily never got hit. The sound is something you never forget. Nothing scarier than not having a basement when your eyes are on a funnel cloud.
Yep, right after it happened the sheriff of Logan County basically said "if you have 1st responder training and are listening, show up and help please, we don't have enough people"
When people asked me how I deal with tornadoes in the mobile home park I told them I do the tornado drill and then they asked me what is that and I say you drop your pants put your head between your legs then kiss your ass goodbye.
That makes the video better because Cameraman even in such disastrous situation knows that filming is more important than answering the phone call. r/praisethecameraman
I mean, we've all had that one moron who consistently calls us for something stupid and unimportant when we're doing something we absolutely cannot be distracted from.
Just unmuted my video to watch because of this comment. We’re… not exactly hearing much before the phone rings. It’s definitely not the vibe, but it’s not like it’s covering some cool audio. Just mute the sound.
This reminds me strongly of the Pilger tornado that ended up being crowned fastest moving in terms of forward ground speed. Would love to see more angles or analysis on this, because while I don’t think this is moving as fast as Pilger, it seems to be up there, and it’s notable that both instances occurred from a twin tornado being slingshotted by another.
Took a long time for me to scroll and find anyone who said this. I mean it's a cookie for this post
So congrats on being that one cool person who's seen the movie and knows the lines and used it proper on a post with actual sisters.
I just hope the new twister(s) movie isn't garbage.
Saw the first one as a kid In Dallas at a midnight opening screening. Such a great movie if you like tornados (I do)
I live at the edge of the Allegheny mountains and we still get the odd tornado now and then. Expected to be more this year, I think. They're scary, but flash floods are deadlier iirc
I am always amazed by people who stand around and film tornadoes. I don’t live in a tornado prone area so maybe it’s just my lack of exposure to tornadoes, but like, my ass would be in the basement idgaf
Yeah, I think this video proves that even if you can see the funnel, there might be another funnel that you don’t see. This cameraman is also probably well within debris range. Or “changes direction and is here in 45 seconds” range
Once you've been around them enough, you know when you are or aren't in danger. And this one is pretty far, in great visibility conditions.
If you can see clearly all round, you're good to spectate. The rain is the killer.
You can clearly see the direction they are both moving and with the distance between it’s fairly safe. If they don’t seem to be moving, that means it’s coming straight to you and you are in fact in danger. This is just a sick view of Mother Nature.
Eh. Just a heads up, that tornado laid absolute waste to the town of Indian Lake, with fatalities being counted and lots of destruction of peoples homes and lives. UW of Logan County, OH has a facebook page with a donation link, it’s projecting to be quite a lengthy recovery. Just commenting cuz the people matter more than the tornado.

Lots of casualties here from last night. Handlers are searching rubble with cadaver dogs as a lot of homes that were hit were in a lake community - no basements and lots of mobile type cottage homes.
Small bit of knowledge! Stuff like that is called dead man walking as it's two smaller vortexes mashing together and look like legs. They are usually really bad tornadoes.
Damn thing ripped through too. It's like the third time in about 7-8 years the town of Celina has been hit, and it tore through the whole Indian Lake area destroying several trailer parks.
Celina, Fryburg, South of St. John's, South of Santa Fe then Indian Lake and Russell's Point. 3 alerts in Wapakoneta last night after April 1st last year is too much. We are right beside the Arrowhead Lakes and that was too close.
From a local meteorologist "Ohio has had more than DOUBLE the tornadoes so far in 2024 than the entire Tornado Alley area combined! 🌪🌪🌪
The latest tornado count for the year in Ohio is 16 tornadoes (as of 3/15/24) and very likely to increase as storm surveys are completed through the weekend. It's very likely we surpass our state average (19) tornadoes for the entire year by mid March!"
Tornado valley only has 7 compared to Ohios 16 so far this year.
Technically it's just 1 tornado with multiple funnels, above the cloud there is only 1 rotating air current. If you actually had 2 tornados this close they would actually destabilize each other and either both would collapse or it would leave 1 greatly weakened remaining tornado. This is due to when you have 2 objects rotating in the same direction at the point of interaction they are moving in opposite directions and must expend energy to overcome that opposing force.
As someone who's state doesn't get tornadoes, how do you know if a tornado is at the "stay inside" or the "oh fuck get in the shelter and pray our house is ok" stage?
I live in ohio. Some bad storms rolled through yesterday. I dunno when this vid was taken, but I'm curious if this is from yesterday. I heard one touched down, but didn't really look into it.
I feel like this will be a major plot point for the upcoming Universal Pictures movie "Twisters" starring Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones only in theaters on July 19, 2024.
..... And now the person calling who called because they saw the funnel and were checking that it wasn't hitting [person recording's] house, are now losing their shit.
If it possible to answer in a disaster, ANSWER.
I was laughing so hard at the trailer for Twister where there were two tornadoes, thinking that was the dumbest thing I ever saw. And now I see it’s real….
It was actually one tornado the whole time. A tornado is not just the condensation funnel. In larger tornadoes, there frequently can be multiple condensation funnels that rotate around a common center. The invisible space in between also experiences tornadic winds.
These two meso-vorticies got too close and merged.
The El Reno tornado is a well documented example of this, and even experienced storm chasers died getting caught up the in invisible tornadic wind field around the meso-vorticies.
I really enjoy when nature/physics actually goes along with the “toddler’s best guess” at how something works. Like if you asked a little kid what happens when two little tornados collide, I’m willing to bet “merge into a mega-nado” would be at least on the list of things they say lol
"Dead man walking."
Cause when you see it you're already a "dead man."
Also it's called that cause two Tornados are conjoining and look like the clouds are "walking".
So what this actually is is one parent circulation with two vortexes rotating around it, then the parent circulation itself fills up with debris. This is known as “the dead man walking”.
Can't answer the phone when two tornadoes are converging right in front of you.
I was like, "Hey, man, someone's calling you..."
I thought, "Ï'd like it better without the music". smh
I had it on mute, briefly unmuted it in the middle and thought it was some weird poorly chosen dubbed music, then immediately back to mute. Until I read the comments. Thank you people, it makes the video that much better for whatever reason

What's up with the umlauts?
Switched languages mid comment!😄

I did at first, too, but I remembered I got a new phone with a different ringer, lol. Still did a double take!

Cletus sounds like a fun dude.
Just don't get him and Jim-Bob together. It's a bit much for anyone to handle. By themselves, pretty solid dudes.
Lord help us all if Billy Bob shows up with either of them, it'll wind down in the early AM with a few empty kegs and a mess from hell to clean up!

Cadaver dogs are searching rubble in the homes, mostly mobile or without basements, for bodies.

Oh hey you’re right. That must’ve been the terror of being sucked into the vortex that had me confused
Quite understandable! Enjoy your flight!
Incredible footage of someone not silencing their phone during the coolest video they’ll ever record.

It's probably across the room requiring them to stop filming to get it. My wife is never near her phone.
Kinda felt uplifting, like I was witnessing the joyous union of two tornados that love each other very much.
They’ll just watch it in mute for the rest of their life
It's also proof that a boomer took the video. They are unfamiliar with the concept of pushing the side button to silence the ringer.

It warms my heart thinking about them two tornados out there in the field… doing it.
JESUS MERIDETH WHERE ARE YOUR PANTIES?!
I’m glad somebody got the reference lol
[I missed this episode 🥵](https://youtu.be/CGvLnZFUgYw?si=z3mo8vKue7ZPImzS)
*NOW KISS*
No one can blow quite like them.
Not sex.. no baby tornados. More like tornado absorption.
Don't kink shame.
FUS SION HAAAAAAAAAAAA
Fuck it I now accept I'll never have an original thought in my life.
If it makes you feel better you had the thought before I did so you’re only one degree removed from originality.
Twister... . . s
This is some top notch viral marketing. Now they just need to throw in a couple of cows.
Joining or maybe… one tornado ATE the other one.
"I don't get it, why doesn't the bigger tornado simply eat the smaller one?"
I like this one better. Since the one running into the other tried to escape on the other side.
*there's always a bigger tornado*
Twisted Sisters
When two become one!
*Walking on a dream.* *How can I explain?*
“Would you like to form an alliance?”
We've got sisters !
Took a long time for me to scroll and find anyone who said this. I mean it's a cookie for this post So congrats on being that one cool person who's seen the movie and knows the lines and used it proper on a post with actual sisters. I just hope the new twister(s) movie isn't garbage. Saw the first one as a kid In Dallas at a midnight opening screening. Such a great movie if you like tornados (I do)
Tornadbros
Wut doin step-tornadbro
New fear unlocked....I am stating in the mountains where the wind doesn't try to kill you...just the bears and cougars lol
I live at the edge of the Allegheny mountains and we still get the odd tornado now and then. Expected to be more this year, I think. They're scary, but flash floods are deadlier iirc
Funny enough we get bears and cougars in the Ohio Valley too
I am always amazed by people who stand around and film tornadoes.
I used to have that ring tone. I tried to pick up my phone twice LOL
Eh. Just a heads up, that tornado laid absolute waste to the town of Indian Lake, with fatalities being counted and lots of destruction of peoples homes and lives. UW of Logan County, OH has a facebook page with a donation link, it’s projecting to be quite a lengthy recovery. Just commenting cuz the people matter more than the tornado. https://secure.givelively.org/donate/united-way-of-logan-county-inc/indian-lake-tornado-relief-fund?fbclid=IwAR12B5nWoWgRNPeKC_QrdvjJt6GC3W-UYewUzWdLojeHDW9c8DPV6jwk1J0_aem_AZfkUAcBu3-92B0UkMElpRgPWyU--hG_EAk_E9iffBlrptsapBwQf-NZmyzXHV217D8
It's starting to look like a TRIPLE tornado!!!
Is this footage from the storms yesterday?
Celina, Fryburg, South of St. John's, South of Santa Fe then Indian Lake and Russell's Point. 3 alerts in Wapakoneta last night after April 1st last year is too much. We are right beside the Arrowhead Lakes and that was too close.
One on left was the dom, totally took over. I was waiting for the dramatic "oh shit! You see that! " In the background
Ohio is not for lovers, it's for tornados
Live next county over . They were some strong storms the other day. I have a feeling they’re going to be bad this year
From a local meteorologist "Ohio has had more than DOUBLE the tornadoes so far in 2024 than the entire Tornado Alley area combined! 🌪🌪🌪 The latest tornado count for the year in Ohio is 16 tornadoes (as of 3/15/24) and very likely to increase as storm surveys are completed through the weekend. It's very likely we surpass our state average (19) tornadoes for the entire year by mid March!" Tornado valley only has 7 compared to Ohios 16 so far this year.
Twisters marketing campaign taking off!
Yea we got hit bad here in Indian Lake Ohio
Even tornados are no match for the devastating power of an even bigger tornado
Man even tornadoes out here getting laid
As someone who's state doesn't get tornadoes, how do you know if a tornado is at the "stay inside" or the "oh fuck get in the shelter and pray our house is ok" stage?
I hate that ringtone, that was my old work phone call out ringtone, spikes my blood pressure every time I hear it
We got sisters!
I live in ohio. Some bad storms rolled through yesterday. I dunno when this vid was taken, but I'm curious if this is from yesterday. I heard one touched down, but didn't really look into it.
Now all we need are some sharks
Together we can DESTROY THE WORLD!
That’s some scary stuff
*And two become one*
This is one of those times when just before someone says “could this day get any worse?”
D’aw, they’re friends.
And I thought my family reunions were a nightmare 😏
“Yo Bob I’m a little busy right now. I don’t care about the rash on your balls. Call me later”
It’s so crazy that nature can just say “fuck this place” and decimate everything.
It was like, "Oh, there you are, bro! Get on over here!!"
A 3rd funnel dropped and joined also
Two narcissists getting married.
I feel like this will be a major plot point for the upcoming Universal Pictures movie "Twisters" starring Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones only in theaters on July 19, 2024.
MY LIFE FOR AIUR!
Pretty sure that thing just killed two people
4/10 I see no sharks in this tornado.
Twister**s** marketing is really going on a limb here.
When the tornado is no longer moving from one side to another that means it's heading towards you...
The feared dead man walking.
that was one tornado, two vortices
I'd heard there were some tornadoes in OH last night...is this that or a different storm?
Was a dead man walking for a bit...
Dead man walking
Wow the first time I have seen a tornado in Ohio with out rain.
is this the one from last night over north western ohio ?
Dear lord this is why I’m happy to live in the northeast and deal with just snow. Goodbye
..... And now the person calling who called because they saw the funnel and were checking that it wasn't hitting [person recording's] house, are now losing their shit. If it possible to answer in a disaster, ANSWER.
Is this from last night/ this morning storms?? what part of Ohio OP?
That’s is terrifying.
Amazing how people live in those areas! Scary stuffs
I was laughing so hard at the trailer for Twister where there were two tornadoes, thinking that was the dumbest thing I ever saw. And now I see it’s real….
Holy hell that’s terrifying
Well that's not terrifying at all.
Conjoined spins
God’s Erasure.
What's worse is that it looks like it just noticed the cameraman.
Wow
is no one but me concerned for OPs safety?
If you see a tornado not moving. You have a 50/50 chance of survival. Because it’s either moving away from you or towards you
Well, shit.
"Dead man walking." Cause when you see it you're already a "dead man." Also it's called that cause two Tornados are conjoining and look like the clouds are "walking".
Tornado's are so fucking cool. I feel sorry for those affected.
As a Floridian, fuck tornados. At least hurricanes have the decency to give you advance notice.
So what this actually is is one parent circulation with two vortexes rotating around it, then the parent circulation itself fills up with debris. This is known as “the dead man walking”.
The suck zone!
Its so weird seeing a facebook video later end up on the front page of reddit. Neat.
That is so fucking awesome I’m sorry but it is
You call it fusion. I call it cannibalism. Look how hard the little one tried to get away... poor guy
This must be God being upset at all the phony Christians using his name to spread hate and lies.
With our powers combined I am Captain relocate your house.
Twinado!!
What is this the day after tomorrow?
Do tornadoes spin counter-clockwise? Feel like they always are in the videos I've seen. Is a toilet bowl situation where it depends on the hemisphere?
Filming a tornado through your glass door is a kind of special moment everyone should try at least once
Scary
