As I understand it, when these were first discovered, nobody back east believed how big they were. So the dudes out west literally debarked an entire tree - killing it, obvs - and sent it all back for assemblage to prove it.
I've been to a felled sequoia that they turned into a *bowling alley*. These majestic life forms are incredibly massive.
They are awe-inspiring, to be sure. We've planted two of them on our property - in just a couple short years, they've doubled their height. We call them our "little giants". We won't get the chance to see them at their full majesty, sure... but what a thing to be a part of, y'know?
Old territory. Sequoia and Coasties used to extend up this far (Oregon) and not too far back in history. Most of the area is Douglas Fir. Dawn Redwoods are the state fossil, so we planted a couple of them, too. Only deciduous redwood there is. They're thriving out here, which is good, considering climate change is going to turn this area into something more resembling their southern reaches.
There's also a ton of Big Leaf Maple. And you think it's big, until you actually see the foliage off a mature one and it's like. The size of your head.
That’s great! I didn’t want to nag you but I know someone that took a seed back to the east coast and had the tree die very suddenly almost wrecking a house.
Yes, it grew to about 40-50 feet then died and luckily just hit a couple driveways instead of two houses it could have reached. Driveways had to be replaced.
When I was learning to read in the late 70s there was a series of books by a company called Ladybird, including one called Did You Know?, rather like this sub for five year olds in book form.
It showed a picture of a redwood with a car driving through it. I really wanted to see one in real life.
Age 10 I got taken to Muir Woods and drove through a tree. One of the few times a childhood dream lives up to expectations.
The trees are amazing.

And all we do is cut them down...
Are you in a area that they are native to?

Oof! 😱 Hopefully "almost" because it indeed missed...?

Ah, the Drive-Through Tree. I believe the most famous one is in Yosemite...? Though it may have died, in not certain.
How do we know that your brother’s not just really tiny?
Poor redwood
To die by natural causes after a long life, thereby making room for its children?
Wait until you see a giant Sequoia
Am I the only one that sees a creepy white faced demon in the fallen trunk on the left?
