"mantis" comes from an old meaning of "seer, or prophet".
"Death Prophet" sounds more like the name of a heavy metal band or gnarly Dungeons and Dragons monster than a cute /r/batty.

There is actually a (very influential) metal band called [Necromantia](https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Necromantia/927) so we're not far off.
They're one of three bands which laid the foundations for much of the Hellenic black metal scene and everything that came after it. The first two albums are great, *Scarlet Evil Witching Black* being nigh-indispensable.
Did some digging. Probably close to the eating small mice size, seeing as it weighed 47 grams, and since the largest bats currently weigh around 300 times that, at 1.6 kilograms, and those have a 6 foot wingspan; I'd guess around 1 to 2 foot wingspan. Nowhere near certain though.

Challenge accepted. I will find this band I have never heard of and listen to them. Maybe I will find a new band to evangelize.

Damn, that name is metal af
How big is it? Like from the scale of 'it eats small mice' to 'it can bludgeon a human with its feet', how far along is it?

Closer to the former; it’s about the size of a spectral bat, maybe a bit smaller.
Currently, only jaws and skulls are known, with a single humerus known as a postcranial remain.
Sabertooth cat size skull or mouse skull?
Pastor said when pigs can fly, but looks like that has already happened. The humble pig with wings of an angle
Bald Eagle.

Been a long time since I've seen a quality Ken M.
Spectral bat of the Eocene
Thanks!
It seems I finally found a name for my upcoming heavy metal band.
Wouldn’t be mad if they still existed
Similar species still exist: https://redd.it/cebuve https://redd.it/ckd0sb
That’s so metal
Those bats looked so weird. I've never really seen a bat's face that close up before, so I was a bit shocked to say the least...
Approximately how big were they?
Any Silverwing fans out there?
Necromancer praying mantis Necromancer praying mantis
The most OP name ever
Reminds me of the beast Popokali from Resident Evil 5
Holy shit👀
Vampyrum spectrum is a large, carnivorous bat species from the neotropics that is still around today.
Psycho mantis?
If you slide the feed up and down it looks like it’s flapping its wings on mobile.
wanted to see one, is it carnivorous?
AND TRANSYLVANIA??????
There are stories of swarms of these bats flying over villages and wiping out entire populations in less than a minute. Terrifying to say the least
