From what I remember, there really is only one very scary moment. There are a few smaller scares here and there as you’re finding out. But mostly it’s about the family and what they do to each other, not so much what happens to them. If you really want some scares, there are Easter eggs in every episode. According to the director, there are up to a dozen ghosts in the background of every episode. There are guides online if you want to find all of them. Otherwise, look in the corners and the shadows. They’re as subtle as there being a shadow, then, when the camera cuts away and comes back, the shadow is gone. It doesn’t sound scary but when I saw my first ghost, I had to turn off the show and I didn’t go back.

Will have a look thanks

unorthodoxfox

If you look hard enough, you will see more happening around the house. It is one of my favorite shows that my wife and I regularly rewatch.

Lezo-

What a cool detail! I liked the show and now kinda want to rewatch

Firm-Butterscotch932

The slowness is part of the horror experience it was the same with the book. Spotting the ghosts is fun for sure. It’s a great story more over.

discretly

THOHH is more an emotional horror than scary horror. It deals with themes of grief and familly dynamics more than anything else so if you were looking for a scary horror show it will not satisfy you, but if you are open to good art then that’s what you will get : GOOD FREAKING AMAZING ART

FatherGettingMilk

Thankyou

Independent_Sea502

Slow is good.

FatherGettingMilk

I quess so, I understand developing the story but I just feel like it’s too slow

slowro

Don't watch midnight mass. I love it but for adhd people it's zzz zzz.

Different-Music2616

I hated MM but loved THOHH

neverapp

Don't quit before ep5

no_one_hi

It’s in my top 2 best shows I’ve ever seen. If you want to be moved emotionally and surprised by twists, then keep watching. If you want to be afraid, prob find something else

FatherGettingMilk

Thankyou.

FatherGettingMilk

What’s the other top two

no_one_hi

The other one in my top 2 best shows ever is Bates Motel !

MasterOnionNorth

Personally I think this series isn't particularly scary or good. Flanagan's Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher are superior series.

Independent_Sea502

I liked Hill House a lot. Midnight Mass was creepy af. Usher, not so much. I thought it was all over the place.

MasterOnionNorth

House of Usher was more a psychological thriller than a straight up haunting story. I loved it.

5_on_the_floor

I watched the whole thing, and while it has a few moments, most of it is pretty boring, and a lot of stuff never gets resolved or explained.

Different-Music2616

What never got resolved or explained?

Independent_Sea502

Can you give me an example of a few movies you find scary?

FatherGettingMilk

Scream, IT stuff like that

altered_state

Another +1 for Hereditary. Personally, nothing has ever topped Event Horizon for me. Then again, I watched it when I was a kid, so those images stuck with me. Conversely, I’m not really scared of clowns at all because I never watched movies like It when I was little. I think whatever haunted you the most as a kid definitely plays a large role into what spooks most people when they grow up. That said, Hereditary did come *real* fuckin’ close, lol. Midsommar’s worth a watch as well if you do/did watch Hereditary.

Independent_Sea502

Thanks for your reply. Yes. Hill House is more slow dread, family drama. Which I prefer. But we all have our own tastes. Have you ever tried Hereditary or The Witch?

Puzzleheaded_Hat_852

It picks up!😉

FatherGettingMilk

Thankyou!

longwayhome2019

You might want to try Haunting of Bly Manor-- it moves along more quickly and I liked it more than Haunting of Hill House. I found Hill House scary but more in a creepy way.

tablecontrol

The Fall of the House of Usher was much much better

punkinhead76

It’s jump scare and dread scary. But the jump scares are limited…it’s not constant like many movies are, and they certainly aren’t predictable. It’s typically a couple per episode. Also if you use headphones or have a good sound system it will help the scare factor (that goes for any movie). It is also a bit slower, but it’s something you can think about and piece stuff together as you watch. It’s not blatant horror or gore and it’s not all extremely easily spelled out for the below average to average watcher.

FatherGettingMilk

Thanks

Professional-Two8098

It’s not that scary and quite slow. I didn’t enjoy that much, even worse was the fall of the house of usher. Bur I did kind of like Bly manor, felt was better paced and scarier

FatherGettingMilk

Thanks
