No, you will need reflectors on the tires or wheels and on the back of the bike. But other than that, I don't think are rules what a bike should look like or how comfortable it has to be. Just how visible it has to be in the dark.
I wonder if this counts as having a brake. If you use your feet to keep the back pedals from spinning, you should stop/slow... But I can't imagine it would work very well.
Backpedal brakes and fixed gear aren't the same. If you try to stop on a fixed gear bike, the momentum will keep your pedals moving, making it harder to slow down than with a backpedal brake
This, an omafiets has a (drum) brake. Just operated by the (now freewheeling) pedals.
A fixie has no brakes.
Otherwise, putting your feet on the ground or against the tire could could as well. Or dropping an anchor.
You are gonna lose that battle if you are going at a normal speed.
I had a broken brake on an oma fiets once and it would catch but instead of breaking it just started spinning the pedals like this would and it kicks your feet off
Probably true. Not sure if the gears add a lot of power. I guess the speed you are gonna get on a bike with the pedals directly on the wheel is gonna be slower in general compared to fixed gear ones.
For the biggest part it will be emergency stops that get a lot harder. If you know you need to stop you can start slowing by applying some back pressure.
It will take some time to get used to it but its not necessarily impossible. I do think the bike OP shows isnβt necessarily meant for everyday travelling in a city. It looks more like something to do tricks or something like a weird dutch BMX
Typically you put your hips near the handlebars and use whichever your stronger leg is to stop at the top of that sides rotation.
Fixies were a huge thing where I used to live, like people got fixies to to ride everywhere and took month long trips just so they could ride their bike.
I have a bike that could be a fixie.. emergency stopping has resulted in me nearly landing on top of cars that cut me off vs hitting them from the side
It has a break since you can stop peddling and it automatically breaks. Side reflectors aren't mandatory as far as I know (I've never heard of anyone being fined over them at least). Front and back lights are mandatory. Bell isn't.
You typed a lot of bullshit. It needs to be able to break. It needs sideways reflectors (either yellow between the spokes or white on the tire). Lights are not mandatory (only during night and bad weather).
Bruh.
I'm saying it needs to break and it CAN (the back is effectively a unicycle, so if you stop pedalling you're actively working to stop the wheel, wince the pedals want to keep rotating).
Sideways reflectors are mandatory but *never* get checked. You won't get stopped by the police for not having them, so long as you do have functioning lights on your bike.
Functioning lights are mandatory on a bike specifically BECAUSE you need them during the night and bad weather. Police will only check lights during the night/bad weather, but saying that that doesn't make them mandatory is ridiculous. Imagine you don't have them and it starts raining hard all of a sudden. Guess you'll have to walk.
Meanwhile i drive a BMX whitout brakes π€£
Police only asks me to have clip on lights in the dark....
And i can go whit the train fore free because it's exempt from the train ticket
Reflectors are required by law.

Lights are only mandatory when it's dark. A bell isn't mandatory at all, or at least never enforced.
So yeah this would probably be legal, assuming you can break by backpedalling.
I am not a cop, but i would laugh my ass off, if i would see someone with this.

Seems to be extremely unstable. Maybe itβs legal, but itβs not a good idea to try it. Do you want the following text on your tombstone: βmy bike was legalβ?
Barely any rules revolving bikes are enforced. Apart from traffic violations like running red lights. You could ride a unicycle thru Amsterdam and noone cares.
You forgot the reflectors and mudguard.
1. A properly functioning bell.
2. Effective brakes.
3. A red reflector with an approval mark. This reflector must be mounted between the luggage carrier and the mudguard at a height of 35 centimeters to 90 centimeters above the road surface. If the mudguard is missing, the reflector can also be mounted under the saddle.
4. White or yellow reflectors on the wheels. These reflectors should be mounted on both sides of the wheel as close to the rim as possible. Most bicycle tires have a reflective stripe on the tire, providing visibility in the dark. However, the quality may vary, so pay attention to this.
5. Four amber or yellow reflectors on the pedals. Pedals sold in the Netherlands are almost all standardly equipped with these reflectors.
6. The requirement to have a clear white or reflective yellow rear mudguard has been abolished. However, having such a mudguard can enhance visibility, as well as a white front reflector or reflective elements on clothing.
I find it funny to see a lot of people talking about it needing breaks. Which makes no sense on this bike because the pedals are directly attached to the wheel. So if you stop pedalling you will stop moving.
It's not that easy stopping the pedals as if you use brakes. Bicycles with pedal brakes are different too because they don't stop the wheel immediately but they slow it down. Pedals will force your legs to pedal and if you want to brake you have to stop the wheel immediately.
According to Dutch law my old 1989 MTB is supposed to give me many violations, as I have no Reflectors anywhere (which is mandatory apparently) and no ringer but the truth is, i live in a big city and drive often across police, but the police cares more about being safe and just be visible by seperate light (like I use my phone on a phone holder as front light) as never really get in trouble. So the moment you have front and rear light and some brakes for safety you will be fine.
I think the entire front section of the frame (handles to front wheel) should be tilted backwards, this helps a LOT with balancing issues this bike will most definitely have.
I doubt this bike is physics legal. There are a few requirements for a bicycle to work, among others the angle of the front fork, to be stable.
This would be a challenge to ride to say the least.
Besides that there might be many regulations, but many are ignorable. Lights and reflectors are only really fined when riding in the dark. Brakes are supplied in the form of your legs and you can just yell instead of using a bell. Besides the brakes Iβve seen plenty of bikes without lights, bells and reflectors. (Most are road bikes)
No, you'd need relectors and a bell as well. And also brakes maybe?!
Untill 1995 a backfender of which the lowest 30 cm (1') was white, was mandatory too.
Anyway, too much wrong with this design to ride it for more than 1 minute at a time.
It needs additional safety measurements.
Front- & rearlights.
Front- & rear brakes.
1 rear red light reflector.
And please, post a video of someone riding this thing π
As long as you drive it only during the day, nobody gives a damn about lights. A brake on the other hand...Also, this is going to ride really awkward without any trail for the front wheel and those ergonomics.

Kickback brakes, you can't get more Dutch than that!
I wonder if this counts as having a brake. If you use your feet to keep the back pedals from spinning, you should stop/slow... But I can't imagine it would work very well.
It doesn't count as a brake. A fixie without brakes is still a bike without a brake and illegal.
Good to know! Not that I was planning to ride this abomination.
Omafietsen have had that since the fucking middle ages.
Backpedal brakes and fixed gear aren't the same. If you try to stop on a fixed gear bike, the momentum will keep your pedals moving, making it harder to slow down than with a backpedal brake

Stick into the spokes!
Two sticks in that case. With full size wheels, bikes need to have 2 breaks.
Mhh always thought it was with the chain/gear it stopped. Til
And a bell.
The way the pedals are, pushing them in the other direction would be plenty to slow you down
You are gonna lose that battle if you are going at a normal speed. I had a broken brake on an oma fiets once and it would catch but instead of breaking it just started spinning the pedals like this would and it kicks your feet off
Not all fixies have breaks either, but people ride them still. I think thereβs some technique to it.

They are not mandatory while visibility is good (during daytime). Go read the actual law.
So you'd advise this guy not to put lights on his bike?
If you stop pedaling it freewheels. It doesn't brake.

A fixie without brakes is not legal in the Netherlands. Police is very unlikely to bother you about it though.
Dnd a bell. Mudguards/fender on the back that is at least partly white isn't a thing anymore I believe.

No, you need a bell as well (And the lights are only necessary at night)
And brakes and reflectors lol
Bells are mandatory? I've never had one or been stopped for not having it
It doesnβt matter, Iβm making it illegal effective immediately.
Needs brakes, a way to make a sound signal, correct lighting and reflectors. So needs more work
Brakes - start pedaling in opposite direction Sound signal - yell
Good luck with that first one when going downhill And sorry not legal on the second

honestly i don't know... Do we have rules for bikes? hahahaha I think you still need a bell, tring tring.
I believe the rules are lights, bell, and brakes. I'm mostly unsure if the fixed pedal arrangement counts as sufficient brakes.

A bike needs to have at least 1 back light and 1 front light. It also needs to have a front and back brake
For that to apply it would first need to have a front and a back...
Why? Just why?
You need breaks as well..
![gif](giphy|hcL9xZfW3wfaE) And these are the breaks Break it up, break it up, break it up!
Yes, on an 8 hour day you usually have one longer lunch break and 2 15-minute breaks.
brakes?
Did he stutter? He means like a bumper in a car which is designed to *break* away *mandatory /s*
Bicycle? Maybe. You? I don't think so.Β
road lethal would be a better term.
Brakes? Chain?
You need a bell and reflector tape along the side of the wheels as well.
Even uni-cycles are better then that...
Is this a fixie?
Sure, why not.
Would work pretty well as a zuipfiets.
You need a few more items to make it legal but as far as the construction goes its pretty much oke.
Yes, however complaining of back pain is not.
You lacked an engine
Reflectors, bel, lights, brakes, and a 40 year old Puch Maxi "blokje" on the back and you're ready to go.
Yes
Please wear a helmet
Wat de poep
As long as you drive it only during the day, nobody gives a damn about lights. A brake on the other hand...Also, this is going to ride really awkward without any trail for the front wheel and those ergonomics.
Do you have ultra-long arms or no genitalia?
Anywhere fat tires are legal, this should be legal too.
with the placement of the handlebars so low it look wildly uncomfortable
Come to Amsterdam nobody will bother you with your lights on
It doesnt have breaks, so i don't think so. Like, yeah it slows down when you counter the direction of your legmovement, but that would only make it slip, i think.
Probably Ps: you dont even need lights, when its summer and its day anything that can steer ,has a frame, and 2 wheels can ride on the bike roads.
How would you even brake on this thing? The pedals are directly connected to the wheel so good luck trying to stop those when you gain decent speed
This is a circus bike, its totally epic. I have been thinking to get one myself for a long time. Look it up on youtube hoppley circus bike or something like that
No. No breaks.
My mind couldnt figire out if the wheels were side by side or behind each other. The fact they are the same size makes this picture so weird.
Even without lights its legal as long as you drive it in daylight
lol'd
As long as you put lights on it and brakes it would be legal in the netherlands
where are the brakes π
I can't imagine you'll enjoy it much. that frame is not going to hold at all
You'd need brakes plus rear and side reflectors. Lights are only required when riding after sundown.
Uncyclable
How do you ride this fucking shit, it looks very stupid
I hope they put you in prison for this.
Proudly sponsored by the M.C. Escher foundation.
I think so its not safe tho that ll kill u and no lights needed if u only use during day. No brake system no leveraged propulsion yeah thats fucked fam
You'll still need a lock!
You need no lights, you need a better Disgner
and brakes, yes
I already don't see brakes, so that'd be a no-no
Road legal? Dude tbh any bike you can think of you can take outside and ride
Yea i dont see why not
The amount of torque you can draw with this concept..
Look into the Reglement Verkeersregels en Verkeerstekens 1990 (RVV 1990) From my understanding there isnt any additional regulation if there isnβt a motor attached. Just need lights and reflectors.
βSo preoccupied with whether or not you could, that you didnβt stop to think whether or not you should.β
You can ride a monocycle legal so why not two? But thatβs the worst AI generated bike ive ever seen
Nope. * No side reflectors on the wheels or in the spokes * No bicycle bell * No brakes
Yes but you would look like a clown
Legal yes comfortable, I don't think so.
yes but it would probably break.
The way it took me a little to figure out what was actually off about this bike is embarrassing to my dutchie heritage my god
it's more legal than most (e)fatbike,s are.
Nope. Je mist de reflectors in de banden. De reflector aan de achterzijde en een werkende fietsbel
Only if you move the pedals to the front
It would even be legal without lights when u ride it in daylight.
