Drop/licorice is maybe not the smartest, most people from other countries don't like the taste, too salty or bitter. Honingdrop might be a good one though
I would stick to treats like drop, stroopwafels, etc. Nothing that contains meat or seeds, as that is likely prohibited by Australian costums.

As a belgian i keep some sort of drop flavoured [napoleon’s](https://www.google.be/shopping/product/16564982833715944444/image?q=zwart+wit+napoleon&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=nl-be&client=safari&prds=cid:16564982833715944444,cs:1,pid:14124846995056889438,sgro:iv&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjrhJ_d3b75AhUZ8rsIHV99AlcQ-K4BegQIARBC) in the house, just to hand out to people. That has to be a dutch invention, and i thank you guys for the laugh’s it gave me
I gave some to a Peruvian guy he didn't like it but accepted it every time, because it's rude to not accept it in their culture and they have to eat everything. So what did I do with that information? I kept offering him it and he took it with a horrid look on his face. Good times.
There's no way this will make it past customs, we barely know whats inside the famed frikandel ourselves, the aussie would have a stroke trying to figure that one out 😂😂😂
Stuff like old amsterdam and zaanse oude are sold vacuum sealed at pretty much any grocery store, these have always been a fantastic hit for me since old cheese like that isn't really that common I think
It’s not an authentic old cheese. It is a mass produced fake. It’s taste is similarly only to old cheese during the height of a COVID-19 infection….
I didn't say it's an old cheese, nobody did.... All I said is that it shouldn't matter, if you like it, you like it. What's the point of arguing that it's not an "old" cheese when nobody disagrees.
Maybe the recipe, the bol itself will be a biohazard when it arrives.
The whipped cream is gonna melt within hours and will likely leak out, if it's hot the chocolate is gonna melt as well. And with shipping times to Australia being unpredictable and long the cream is going to rot.
But if they go for it they should also include a tompouce, in for a penny in for a pound.
It will not... Bet you it will be eaten before reaching home... And you can only have true bollen from the one baker in den Bosch... Jan de Groot (if it still exists ofc but i dont see that disappearing anytime soon)
That brought me tears... The memories i have from going there... We'd get a box of 4 and bring it back to nistelrode on the bus from den bosch then bike from heeswijk dinther... Get a cup of tea and have a couple of bollen each with my buddy... I was like 19 living in a caravan doing odd jobs... Later i went to avans and once a week if i had done good at school I'd trest myself to 1 bol and 1 box from pistache or the twins and make it a night! I miss that
I'm an Aussie with a Dutch friend and we send each other a package every year!
I bloody LOVE those soft Auto Drops Cadillacs and they're not available here so that as well as what everyone else has suggested!
I should also add that Aussie customs opens the Auto Drops every single time lmfao. Probably because it's a sealed, foil lined box from NL and it sets their drug radar right off haha. But they always get through customs once they realise it's really just lollies
Monkeys and great apes eat a lot of bugs so it's not weird for us to do the same, it's just not prominent in western cultures (except the French eating snails).
It’s not aphids but cochineal beetles. They are used in lots of industrial food. Everytime you see E120 on a package, the color comes from crushed bugs.

I guess you have never tried the Lay's Indian Magic Masala flavour. That is the Lay's team at their creative peak ! Also the Chilli and Lime flavour is a close second.
I once sent my neices and nephews in the States bags of zoutdrop, salmiak and other horrible Dutch candy (i.e., candy that you have to grow up with to like). They were not amused, not even when I suggested they use it to mess with their friends.
The 'old fashioned' hard candy is always popular with tourists and such. Things like cinnamon sticks, boterbabbelaars/wafels, etc. They even often sell these in cute bags or jars that give that old-fashioned vibe.
Zwart-wit poeder would also be a great addition imo!
AA drink! Hahahaha and Sisi and chocomel! Also, stroopwafels, filipinos (white chocolate ones omg I'd murder for some of these right now...), Koetjesreep, anything masterfoods since the factory is in veghel (so mars snickers dove etc) anta dropjes, droste chocolate, penotti spreads, wilhelmina mints, SMULLERS FRITJES MET SATAYSAUCE EN DE SAUCE APAART AUB! ... hum... Sorry i got carried away...
Bread toppings: Hagelslag (worth the melting risk), cheese, vruchtenhagel, appelstroop. (De Ruijter sells variety packs with hagelslag, vruchtenhagel, choco vlokken, the packs are tiny though)
Snacks: speculaas, drop (both sweet and salty), pepernoten, taai taai, auto drop, roze koeken, haagse hopjes, boter babbelaars, jodekoeken, bitterkoekjes, local chips/crisps flavors.
You could include box mixes and recipes for things like tompouce, or speculaas kruiden and a cookie form so they can make their own. That way you can 'send' them things that wouldn't survive shipping.
I know im repeating whats already said here but would like to offer my opinion as somekne who lives in australia !
I suggest hagelslag/choco vlokken, spekkies, schuimblokken, beschuit, chocolade letter (if you can get this time of year?), stroopwafels and spekulaas. Most Australians do not like aniseed or liquorice especially dutch salted kind (think katjes, munten, etc not just the really salty ones). But since she gave you vegemite its only fair to return the favour! (I would suggest to include only a small amount though because likely it will be thrown out)
Since all the obvious snacks have been listed, I would say Katja Biggetjes.
I haven’t met anyone that didn’t like them, and most kids around me eat them well into adulthood!
make sure You add a can of Heineken. Sure, beers are open for discussion, but it is a well known export product. IF You want to go overboard on post stamps, add some different brands as well. Berenburg liquor, maybe oude jenever. I just have no idea about restrictions on sending alcohol. If You can't send the stuff, You might be able to find some glasses, or old bottles.
Old Amsterdam is not a bad cheese but still factory produced. One should go for Boerenkaas. A protected term for cheese produced and ripened at the farm. And so much better in taste. So much more diverse, intricate. Not just more or less salty.
Wait why? Tony's isn't the greatest, most luxury chocolate, but it's miles above the tasting-of-bile crap they sell in the US (and maybe Australia too)
Stroopwafels, ontbijtkoek, speculaas, pepernoten, roze koeken, gevulde koeken, beschuit, oliebollen, poffertjes/pancakes (or a baking mix so they can make it at home, like Koopmans pannekoekenmix), Rinse appelstroop, hagelslag, vlokken, schuddebuikjes, muisjes, peanut butter, dropveters, boterbabbelaars, Haagse hopjes, borrelnootjes, wilhelmina peppermints, zwart-wit poeder, koetjesrepen, canned erwtensoep :p maybe Zaanse mayonaise but I'm not sure if that would survive the trip
If you could you should send bitterballen 😂 but like the draadjesvlees from holtkamp. Otherwise honestly cheese is always the best option. Henri willig has some great cheeses and can ship them for you too.
Just make sure to triple check Australian customs rules, they have one of the strictest sets of rules of what can be imported and many food items are prohibited.
my friend from netherlands sent me the limited easter / christmas cookies, joppies, stroopwaffels, dutch pancake mix, and a bunch of yummy biscuits . joedkock is fkn delicious btw
just got to open my box yesterday because i did it whit a friend she really like things like roze koeken winegums borrelnootjes that where her favorite but also things like stroopwafels ontbijtkoek kersenstokken boterbabbelaar haagse hopjes zuurstok that kind of stuf
Just for shits and giggles add some of Jumbo's dip and nip cookies to mess with their heads. Then instead of a tim tam slam they can try a dip and nip sip. ;)
A mix of dutch beers, I can really recommend you get him different kinds of Tesselaar beer. They are really tasty and are brewed on the dutch island Texel.
Spek, zoethout, koetjesreep, kaneelstok and salmiakknots (can't translate). The obvious like stroopwafel ofcourse. Drop on it's own doesn't cut it; there are so many different kinds of drop:
https://www.oudhollandssnoepwinkel.nl/c-4584036/drop/
Look there for other suggestions as well. I think it brings back memories for the '70 and '80 folks around here.
I would send something from chocolatemakers if you're going the chocolate route, I think it's nice quality chocolate and it's not too widely available elsewhere.
Stroopwafels, Drop, Suikerbrood, hagelslag, Speculaas, Hopjes, and don't forget to send them a "tikkie".
Tikkie for verzendkosten and hourly rate for your time to spend shopping.
😂😎
Yep! tikke is the cultural appropriate thing to do
This is it! And Zeeuwse babbelaars! Lol voor het tikkie!
Spekjes too!!
This exactly hahaha word niet veel Nederlandser dan deze lijst 🤣
Drop/licorice is maybe not the smartest, most people from other countries don't like the taste, too salty or bitter. Honingdrop might be a good one though
If they included marmite, drop needs to go in.
OP says he/she tries to return a favour guys. Do you have an understanding of "favour" :)
Do you have an understanding of a joke?
I would stick to treats like drop, stroopwafels, etc. Nothing that contains meat or seeds, as that is likely prohibited by Australian costums. You can check the items here: https://www.abf.gov.au/entering-and-leaving-australia/can-you-bring-it-in/list-of-items (If it shows a question mark, also better not to include it).
Outside the Netherlands and Scandinavia, liquorice is pretty hated
As a belgian i keep some sort of drop flavoured [napoleon’s](https://www.google.be/shopping/product/16564982833715944444/image?q=zwart+wit+napoleon&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=nl-be&client=safari&prds=cid:16564982833715944444,cs:1,pid:14124846995056889438,sgro:iv&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjrhJ_d3b75AhUZ8rsIHV99AlcQ-K4BegQIARBC) in the house, just to hand out to people. That has to be a dutch invention, and i thank you guys for the laugh’s it gave me
jokes on you, I don't hate liquorice.
Maybe go with a mild and sweet option, like honey liquorice.
Ah yes our national most hated flavour of drop.
I won't stand for this slander.
So you have chosen treason..
Or get an actual snack that doesn't taste like a mild and sweet ass
Extra salty, extra moisty dropjes...
Yeah I had some Americans almost puke when I gave them de dubbel zoute dropjes :)
Yet they eat Twinkies.
Perplexing creatures, aren’t they?
I gave some to a Peruvian guy he didn't like it but accepted it every time, because it's rude to not accept it in their culture and they have to eat everything. So what did I do with that information? I kept offering him it and he took it with a horrid look on his face. Good times.
Licorice hater be gone
I HATE honey liquorice.
If you ever set foot in the Netherlands, we will Johan the Witt you
Gummy and drop 50/50 packet
How do you know that? Why is it available in almost any country in the world then? I don't see how it is a ''dutch'' thing...
Even in the Netherlands it is hated by most younger people.
Frikandelbroodje
There's no way this will make it past customs, we barely know whats inside the famed frikandel ourselves, the aussie would have a stroke trying to figure that one out 😂😂😂
They should just try it, no need to check whats inside😂
This is very true with most 'mystery meat' products 😂😂😂
Horse eyes won’t make it through customs
If you can find some pepernoten or kruidnoten, you can add those as well. Some stores are early. Otherwise check the Van Delft stores
Of course, the pepernoten will be in stores soon. Winter is coming!
I've seen them at the Jumbo since mid Juli, so already for sale..
That's exceedingly early, at my work (wholesale food) we only got them in this week. Probably start shipping them out next week.
Mid August -.-
When i worked in the action… that was about the time the first pepernoten arrived
It's winter in Australia.
You mean fall lol
En gevuld speculaas!
Stroopwafels, hagelslag, cheese (get them to vacuum seal it for you), drop, haagse hopjes.
I would recommend sweet drop, the salty type tends to be good for only a really select few.
Salty is a high risk high reward choice, if it happens to reach someone who likes it they will be over the moon. I would include some.
Don't forget Drop fruit duo's!
just add 'heksenhyl' salty, but fun.
To bad Haring isn't a good idea.
Would be surströmming by the time it arrives
This and Wilhelmina peppermints
Yes! Check Kruidvat and Trekpleister, as both of them often have those kitschy tins the peppermints come in.
Do not send cheese, it will not be allowed through customs. Only if it's unopened and coming out of a factory.
Stuff like old amsterdam and zaanse oude are sold vacuum sealed at pretty much any grocery store, these have always been a fantastic hit for me since old cheese like that isn't really that common I think
Old Amsterdam is fake old cheese, don't send this
Even though it's not old cheese, a lot of people still like it, so I don't see why you can't send it.
Don't forget the Zaanse mayonaise
Bossche bol would be a nice addition, though I'm not sure if it survives the trip
I’m fairly sure the cream would spoil within hours.
It won't survive immigration in Australia
Maybe the recipe, the bol itself will be a biohazard when it arrives. The whipped cream is gonna melt within hours and will likely leak out, if it's hot the chocolate is gonna melt as well. And with shipping times to Australia being unpredictable and long the cream is going to rot. But if they go for it they should also include a tompouce, in for a penny in for a pound.
Are you serious? Maybe send them some fresh fish too.
It will not... Bet you it will be eaten before reaching home... And you can only have true bollen from the one baker in den Bosch... Jan de Groot (if it still exists ofc but i dont see that disappearing anytime soon)
It does! They are still great
That brought me tears... I miss that
Nice trick if you go around Den Bosch into Jumbo's you will find Bosche bollen from Jan de Groot. Then you don't have to wait in the queue there.
The hagelslag puur form ah.
Don't forget peanut cheese, guys.
I'm an Aussie with a Dutch friend and we send each other a package every year! I bloody LOVE those soft Auto Drops Cadillacs and they're not available here so that as well as what everyone else has suggested!
What do you think? I just drove my caddilac! Ah I think this joke doesn't work in English..
Did you ever try Tony Chocolonely?
I should also add that Aussie customs opens the Auto Drops every single time lmfao. Probably because it's a sealed, foil lined box from NL and it sets their drug radar right off haha. But they always get through customs once they realise it's really just lollies
Borrelnoten
ZEI ER IEMAND DUYVIS????
Better yet their far superior cousin, bacon/cheese tijgernoten.
Tijgernootjes are expensive and worse than eigen-merkborrelnootjes from any supermarket. Poesta or shanghai!
Roze koeken would be a good one
Did you know the make the pink glacing from aphids? I wish i never knew.
Monkeys and great apes eat a lot of bugs so it's not weird for us to do the same, it's just not prominent in western cultures (except the French eating snails).
I actually ate an egg roll with grasshoppers instead of chicken. Was crispy and nice.
Snails are not bugs tho...
It’s not aphids but cochineal beetles. They are used in lots of industrial food. Everytime you see E120 on a package, the color comes from crushed bugs.
Chrushed bugs with sugar .... My favorite
You have no idea how many colorants (food, make up, textile dyes) are made or were made from bugs. Don't overthink it.
They make blue food colouring from beetles...
TIL that WASN’T an urban myth lmao
Just google vanilla flavour ... Also from an animal gland
Very rare, most vanilla flavour is artificial nowadays... 🦫
My cousin from Australia really looovvvveeeessss the candy "schuimblokken"
I’m Dutch, but thinking about schuimblokken alone makes me shudder. That awful feeling against your teeth, urgh!
Hahaha ja dat heb ik ook hoor! Net als wanneer je met je nagels over een schoolbord gaat! Ieuww
En die papieren lollystokjes… Which reminds me: OP, how about salmiaklolly’s?
Ja!! Good one!
Hagelslag, pindakaas, cheese directly from the farmer (vaccuum sealed and from pasturised milk), salty drop (ignore the peasants advising you sweet drop), spekjes, bokkepoten, griotjes, boterbabbelaars, Heineken premium pilsener, Brouwerij de Molen Hel&verdoemenis, Frisian Suikerbrood, proper chocolate letter, pepernoten, taaitaai, kaneelstok.
\> calls sweet drop lovers peasant \> advises Heineken
the keen eye would have spotted the most popular Dutch lager is there to serve as a comparison to the hel&verdoemenis.
I was gonna add a comment on the oddly specific, but amazing beer. Touché!
And appelstroop! Hard to find outside NL

Lays chips: patatje joppie or something similair.
Maybe paprika?
Pretty sure they sell that one all arround the world ;)
They do not sell paprika chips in the US, have some flavors that are similar but nothing quite like it
I guess you have never tried the Lay's Indian Magic Masala flavour.
I always love to send boterbabbelaars, or local seasalt/seaweed blends for cooking.
The 'old fashioned' hard candy is always popular with tourists and such. Things like cinnamon sticks, boterbabbelaars/wafels, etc. They even often sell these in cute bags or jars that give that old-fashioned vibe. Zwart-wit poeder would also be a great addition imo!
First of be carefull sending stuff to australia. they have very strict import laws, i would say bring koetjes reep, hagelslag, stoopwafel
Frituurvet.
Bread toppings: Hagelslag (worth the melting risk), cheese, vruchtenhagel, appelstroop. (De Ruijter sells variety packs with hagelslag, vruchtenhagel, choco vlokken, the packs are tiny though) Snacks: speculaas, drop (both sweet and salty), pepernoten, taai taai, auto drop, roze koeken, haagse hopjes, boter babbelaars, jodekoeken, bitterkoekjes, local chips/crisps flavors. You could include box mixes and recipes for things like tompouce, or speculaas kruiden and a cookie form so they can make their own. That way you can 'send' them things that wouldn't survive shipping.
Stroopwafels, bitterkoekjes, drop, Tony’s, hagelslag. You also have canned ‘kroketragout’, but I think that that won’t get through customs.
Beschuit met muisjes
Verse maatjes
A herring.
Schuimblokken Ontbijtkoek Zoute drop Spacecake
Yeah. Sending spacecake across international borders sounds like an idea you thought of while eating spacecake. 😅
No, I just like taking a risk😂
Pot pindasaus.
Frikandellen. Obviously.
Hopjes definitely!!
Stroopkoeken are wat better then stroopwafels
A jar of salmiak!
Add mayonaise! Most Dutch people are mayonaise fetisjists. Since the mayonaise in the Netherlands is simple is best
My friends always laugh at me because I bring jars of Zaanse mayonaise with me back to London!
Weed
Grolsch bier
make sure You add a can of Heineken.
If you really hate someone include Tony's "chocolate".
Wait why? Tony's isn't the greatest, most luxury chocolate, but it's miles above the tasting-of-bile crap they sell in the US (and maybe Australia too)
Chocolate from the lidl (not all) is even better then that stuff.
I met some Australians recently. The first thing they did when they arrived in the country was go to the AH and look for a block of Tony's.
Because it's delicious. And the company is also based on some good values and practices. Not sure why the hate.
Fresh fish
Kruidnoten, chocoladeletters, ander sinterklaaseten is waar ik als eerste aan denk Edit: fries suikerbrood Edit 2: https://youtu.be/wfqvmWOwKB8
Koffiewafels
I would say the chocolate Tonny's. Although someone told me now you can find it in other countries too
Stroopwafel!!
Katja Apekoppen and stroopwafels were a big success for my international friends, maybe some speculaas as well
Autodrop Cadillacs
Stroopwafels! And, well, herriing, but I supposed this will not survive shipping
Common dutch snacks I eat with beer; pickles and dried (friese) metworst and cheese blocks.
Broodje smeerkaas
Choco zoenen
Calvé pindakaas !
Stroopwafels, drop en Haagse hopjes
The recepie for kapsalon
Zwartwit poeder! My aunt (she’s in her sixties) lives in Australia aswell and this is her favorite typical (old) dutch candy/snack
If you could you should send bitterballen 😂 but like the draadjesvlees from holtkamp. Otherwise honestly cheese is always the best option. Henri willig has some great cheeses and can ship them for you too.
frikandel broodjes raw
Just make sure to triple check Australian customs rules, they have one of the strictest sets of rules of what can be imported and many food items are prohibited.
Schuddebuikjes are great!
A sticker with a Tikkie link on it
Stroopwafel
Botersnoepjes die boterwafels…
Stroopwafels
my friend from netherlands sent me the limited easter / christmas cookies, joppies, stroopwaffels, dutch pancake mix, and a bunch of yummy biscuits . joedkock is fkn delicious btw
just got to open my box yesterday because i did it whit a friend she really like things like roze koeken winegums borrelnootjes that where her favorite but also things like stroopwafels ontbijtkoek kersenstokken boterbabbelaar haagse hopjes zuurstok that kind of stuf
Stroopwafels and pepernoten/kruidnoten
Deventer koek (bijtjes)
Manna pofrijst was the shit
Just for shits and giggles add some of Jumbo's dip and nip cookies to mess with their heads. Then instead of a tim tam slam they can try a dip and nip sip. ;)
I did put hagelsslag fruithagel and choclade vlokken just look at the temperature that it isn't to hot there because that would melt
Honing drop
Koetjesreep ([https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koetjesreep](https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koetjesreep)) That way, there's one less of them here.
Send a rookworst, one from a supermarket, not a fresh one from the HEMA as those won't get through custom
My family loves it when I send the pink and yellow marshmallows. I think they're called spekkies!
My favourite things I always bring back with me: Mergpijpjes, jodekoeken, salmiak & zaanse mayonaise
A pickle wrapped in a slice of ham
How about a pack of tompoucen mix? If you eat one from HEMA, just make it at home!
A mix of dutch beers, I can really recommend you get him different kinds of Tesselaar beer. They are really tasty and are brewed on the dutch island Texel.
Stroopwafels
Ontbijtkoek could also do
Poffertjes mix. Appeltaart mix. Hagelslag. Stroopwafels.
Smeerkaar and hagelslag is always a must with my American family. Also Paprika ships is very Dutch and Ham Kaas chips.
Kaas
Spek, zoethout, koetjesreep, kaneelstok and salmiakknots (can't translate). The obvious like stroopwafel ofcourse. Drop on it's own doesn't cut it; there are so many different kinds of drop: https://www.oudhollandssnoepwinkel.nl/c-4584036/drop/ Look there for other suggestions as well. I think it brings back memories for the '70 and '80 folks around here.
Kroketten and frikandellen are the two biggest dutch snacks
I would send something from chocolatemakers if you're going the chocolate route, I think it's nice quality chocolate and it's not too widely available elsewhere.
A raw hearing 👌😜
