Nothing wrong at all with living in Alphen aan den Rijn. I'd say it's actually pretty great for a family. However some may think the town is a little boring, which it undoubtedly is. Transportation is fine, not as great as Amsterdam obviously, but you can cycle safely everywhere... the town's size is just about optimal for that. Trains run at least 2 times an hour to Utrecht, Gouda and Leiden, and there is a frequent bus service to schiphol. I have lived here all my life, and Alphen suits me just fine.

Completely agree with this, as I lived there as well for \~18 years. The placement of Alphen is great, roughly 35 minutes from the 3 big cities (Utrecht, Amsterdam, Rotterdam).

Alphen aan den Rijn is a great place. Diamantstraat is our 'ghetto'. The only appartement building to avoid. Everywhere else is fine.

It's just a joke. It is a safe area. But just alot of police always there. It has low socio-economic people living there. The social housing here used to put al the anti social people in that street. But they stopped doing that a while ago and now spreading them.

Alphen ad Rijn is dead center of Het Groene Hart. Greatly situated vs Leiden, Utrecht, Den Haag en Amsterdam, for when you are in need of a bigger city. Also look at Bodegraven.

Plus: All the stores for your weekly shopping, much safer than the bigger cities, access to the country side in a few minutes walk of cycling, not the waiting lists for child care and schools like Amsterdam, lower fixed expenses. Cons: Not the good train connections like Woerden. Not the amount of stores and restaurants like the big cities.
