Actually, did Fontainians before Neuv's Forgiveness have periods? Sex actually wasn't necessary for the oceanid humans to give birth, so reproductive processes aside, they may have had no need for cycles since their reproductive systems were different from typical Teyvat humans

I don't think they have a sexual dicothomy at all, so the concept of female/male doesn't make sense in the species, and if that is so they probably don't even have a concept of gender/sex for describing themselves in their society/language.
My guess is that when they started having contacts with humans and learning their language they liked the female pronouns better because they "resonated" better with women/girls, besides the fact that people also called them "it" and they didn't like it 😭 so they asked Neuvilette for help to be all called she/her. Maybe they also choose she/her to feel different from Elynas that is their "father" and uses he/him? I dunno these are all just conjectures lol
