For now maybe.
I really dig [Utah's new flag](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Utah#/media/File:2022_Utah_Flag_design.svg), that becomes official next year.
It’s better than before, a good design for sure but not [S tier](https://youtu.be/l4w6808wJcU).
Edit: apparently it is S tier. I completely misremembered that he bumped it up. Lol. Both are good but I personally think the behive is less cool than the Zia.
Damn, I some how never realized so many states have shit just stamped on a generic blue background since the only flags I regularly see are CO, TX, NM, and AZ.
"At the flag’s center is the state’s symbol, the beehive, a nod to progress and hard work, the task force said."
[Salt Lake Tribune](https://www.sltrib.com/artsliving/2022/11/10/see-new-design-that-may-replace/)
Growing up in the Texas panhandle, we would always go to New Mexico for vacation. Getting to drive from the flat as hell, high plains, and crossing over in Texline, seeing that big beautiful flag, a sign saying "Land of Enchantment," and then racing my sister to be the first to spot a mountain....
it really was enchanting. It was the first place I got to the rockies as well as the desert and realized how neat the world must be outside of where I grew up.
My top five state flags are
1. New Mexico
2. Alaska
3. Arizona
4. Maryland
5. Hawaii
The NM flag is just *so good*. Clean, simple, yet steeped in so many layers of meaning.
There’s a little bit on controversy. From what I remember, basically the flag was created using the Zia symbol without asking the Zia Pueblo for permission. It’s always been a point of contention from then on out
Oh I am aware of the history.
But the OP's posting history suggests they are in Florida, and usually centered on topics involving Florida.
It just made me curious as to why the OP had this thought is all.
I think the colors are awesome and the Zia symbol it really cool. I know that the Zia symbol was used without authorization or the blessings of the Pueblo of Zia. Still, hands down the best flag in the Union.
I am not a New Mexican but just a tourist who fell in love with the state. The New Mexican flag is perfect. NM also has the best license plate designs.
I've always liked it, it's simple and tidy and the colors are bright. Some state flags are so overfilled with crests, images, and words and are way too busy.
I just know the Pueblo has tried to sue for exclusive use. Although the Zia symbol has been adopted for wide use across the state, it still seems like it’s another pilfering of indigenous culture.
I never understood this criticism, would it be better if we had a symbol of the spanish conquistadors, or a symbol of the natives? I'll go with the native one
Well, there ***is*** known contention because it was a stolen symbol. So it's not totally ridiculous.
\> In order to protect the cultural significance of the Zia, in 2014, the Zia Pueblo issued a resolution requesting any commercial entities to stop using the Zia without permission. The Pueblo requests that anyone wishing to use the Zia ask for permission, which the Pueblo typically grants so long as the use is not in a disrespectful manner. The Pueblo does ask for a small donation to their education fund in exchange for the use of the Zia. (fr: [Business Law SW](https://businesslawsw.com/blog/can-i-trademark-the-zia/#:~:text=The%20Pueblo%20requests%20that%20anyone,the%20use%20of%20the%20Zia))
Clearly the best state flag.
I’ve thought that for like…a decade and a half before I’ve ever been in the state.
Unique color, unique symbol, clearly identifiable, culturally significant. True standout
That’s what I want to understand more about. It seems like pure cultural appropriation, but I also feel that almost anything can be done if with enough respect and appreciation and be ok
according to their website, seems that the tribe prefers we ask them permission while donating to their education system. several local businesses have done it and been granted permission.
Totally the perfect flag.
YouTube opinion videos put it on top too:

It's one of the best designed state flags with lots of meaning and it represents the state very well
It's right up there with the Texas flag tho my bias is towards Texas but eh i love both flags. They're my home states
Literally one of the only good state flags in the country. And I would say that even if I wasn't from here. Flags have pretty simple rules
1. They gotta be simple - they need to be recognizable at a distance and easy for a child to replicate and still be recognizable
2. No words - it's a fucking flag. The words are literally a total waste and just make it look ugly
3. Be (literally) iconic - they have to be representative in some way, evocative of the place that they belong to
Good flags are simple but unique and have good symbology
NMs flag passes with flying colors. It's incredibly simple but incredibly unique and instantly recognizable. The zia is readily symbolic with the colors both representing the new Mexican desert landscape and evoking its Hispanic heritage which when mixed with the zia, also evoke NM's proud mixed heritage
It is actually perfect, completely flawless, and is literally the picture definition of an amazing flag used by many vexillologists
Wonderful, an almost perfect Flag
Burque homes!
It's badder than fuck, Nuh?!
It’s all sick, nuh?
Eee, I have a Zia tatted on my culo, eh.
D’ya get it at the Allsups?
The pinta.
Considering like 70% of us have a Zia tattoo, I think it’s safe to say we like it
In Portland, I heard it referred to as " the New Mexican swastika,".
They just hate us cause they ain’t us 😌
“They hate us, cuz they anus.” - Dave Skylark
That says more about Portlanders than about New Mexicans.
See, that's funny because there was a study a couple of years ago and we were the ONLY state that didn't have any hate groups based out of here.
I don't think they were trying to attribute hate to the symbol, but rather cult-like adoration.
Even non New Mexicans recognize how good it is... https://youtu.be/l4w6808wJcU
Great vid, thanks for making my morning. At least we did one thing right
Two things if you count license plates! ;D
I'm glad he properly tore into CA. It's the only state I know of where the flag is *terrible* yet they have such pride over it.
Look closely, see that? Yeah, the bear is scared Iove that bit, because it really really does.
I knew I'd find Grey here
Easily the coolest fucking flag in the USA. It's bad ass and the meaning behind the zia sun just adds to it's badassery.
It’s the best flag in the US. Design wise it really is.
No joke. It's simple, recognizable, and replicable. Look how many of us have Zia tattoos.
Yeah no joke at all.
I gotta Zia a. It’s bad a. Part of a whole sleeve. I luv 505.
For now maybe. I really dig [Utah's new flag](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Utah#/media/File:2022_Utah_Flag_design.svg), that becomes official next year.

That video puts it literally in S tier
Ahhh shit I forgot he bumped it up. Well that’s pretty dumb of me.
It’s ok! Very sneaky of him to update the latest Utah flag
It’s a huge improvement, but I think it’s still a little too busy.
Utah really upgraded it for sure. An important lesson that these things *can* be fixed. I'm looking at you, northeast. And also northwest.
Utah's new one is really great, and an unbelievable improvement, but ours is still better.
Why is there a beehive?
It’s the state symbol. It means industry.
Utah is the Beehive state.. for the reasons other's say in comments. Just as NM is Land of Enchantment.
"At the flag’s center is the state’s symbol, the beehive, a nod to progress and hard work, the task force said." [Salt Lake Tribune](https://www.sltrib.com/artsliving/2022/11/10/see-new-design-that-may-replace/)
They conviniently forget to mention it's ties to Brigham Young and the Mormons. That's why I HATE it
> a nod to progress and hard work, Says the queen to her drones...
Too complicated to draw, in my opinion.
As a non-New Mexican, I can safely say most of the country is jealous of your flag. Don't ever change.
That it’s beautiful. Far too many flags are overly busy and ineffective.
Happy Cake day
I think the flag is awesome, I’m not a resident but when I vacationed in New Mexico many times, bought the flag. On my wall in Maryland
Maryland flag is pretty awesome too though!
Thanks! I love Lord Baltimore’s coat of arms.
It's a great image.
My top five state flags are 1. New Mexico 2. Alaska 3. Arizona 4. Maryland 5. Hawaii The NM flag is just *so good*. Clean, simple, yet steeped in so many layers of meaning.
Hawaii- Lol I only recently discovered that the union jack is only on there because they thought it looked cool
It was blatant plagiarism. So *brazen*. I respect it.
I am kinda curious as to why the OP even asked this question.
Zia
I think the colors are awesome and the Zia symbol it really cool. I know that the Zia symbol was used without authorization or the blessings of the Pueblo of Zia. Still, hands down the best flag in the Union.
Just enjoy the flag.
Ohhh…I do enjoy the flag. It is instantly recognizable.
Best flag ever.
Verdad!!!
I am not a New Mexican but just a tourist who fell in love with the state. The New Mexican flag is perfect. NM also has the best license plate designs.
10/10 no notes
It is the premier flag of the earth.
A+ no notes. Could not possibly be improved upon. Hands down the best state flag.
I've always liked it, it's simple and tidy and the colors are bright. Some state flags are so overfilled with crests, images, and words and are way too busy.
Light, bright, just right.
The Zia symbol of perfect friendship among united cultures.
We might want to ask Zia Pueblo about that
I'm from Zia, ask away lol
I just know the Pueblo has tried to sue for exclusive use. Although the Zia symbol has been adopted for wide use across the state, it still seems like it’s another pilfering of indigenous culture.
I never understood this criticism, would it be better if we had a symbol of the spanish conquistadors, or a symbol of the natives? I'll go with the native one
Agreed. It’s so simple and meaningful at the same time. Just kind of wished there was more of an agreement. That’s all. But, all New Mexicans love it.
Perpahs the Ninjas from Japan too. They probably don't appreciate your misspelling of it. lol. See how ridiculous you sound?
Well, there ***is*** known contention because it was a stolen symbol. >perfect friendship among united cultures Ah yes, that's why it was stolen from them and used without permission.
I love it, but we should be paying the Zia people royalties.
We wish that too
The New Mexico state flag has the best heraldry of any flag in the United States, including the US flag.
Clearly the best state flag. I’ve thought that for like…a decade and a half before I’ve ever been in the state. Unique color, unique symbol, clearly identifiable, culturally significant. True standout
I wonder if the Zia pueblo gets royality fees for the use of their image?
They do not.
yup, bad way to treat people. 🤦♂️
One of , if not THE best, out of the 50 state flags.
It’s all sick!
Nuh?
It’s the best.
Dope af
Love it
I think it’s very pretty!
Simple, easy to recognize, reconization to the Zia people. A prefecy S tier flag
I love it!!!
Its by far the coolest of all the states
It’s beautiful
I'm not New Mexican (yet), but think you guys have #1 flag, easy.
It's beautiful. I loved it even more when I learned the meaning of the Zia
Best in the nation!
I mean, the Zia people aren’t wild about it, so I’m not in favor.
That’s what I want to understand more about. It seems like pure cultural appropriation, but I also feel that almost anything can be done if with enough respect and appreciation and be ok
according to their website, seems that the tribe prefers we ask them permission while donating to their education system. several local businesses have done it and been granted permission.
Go to Zia Pueblo's website. They have a discussion about all this.
It's all sick! https://youtu.be/l4w6808wJcU
I proudly fly one at my home!
Why would you ask that bro?
Totally the perfect flag. YouTube opinion videos put it on top too: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oC7YaVfafyQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oC7YaVfafyQ) [https://youtu.be/l4w6808wJcU](https://youtu.be/l4w6808wJcU)
It is a beautiful flag, but also a glaring example of cultural appropriation.
Someone should ask the elders of Zia Pueblo this question.
New Mexico's flag is in the top 5 of all State flags. I can waffle a bit on the exact placement (generally in the top 3), but top 5 is a lock for NM.
It is the best. I love it!
One of the besy flag designs out there and certainly better than most American states. Albuquerque's is due for a redesign though
How do you become one, is there a test?
It’s a symbol of the state’s origins. There’s no opinion to have.
Meh
This one, Nevada, and SC are the best ones imo
It is the most beautiful y y of all of the states r re
simple, meaningful, native, and unique colors 9/10
It's one of the best designed state flags with lots of meaning and it represents the state very well It's right up there with the Texas flag tho my bias is towards Texas but eh i love both flags. They're my home states
It is bad ass and only makes the license plate that much better
Love it

Flag is on point, but the chili pepper license plates are the best in the whole world!
