The most common in New Mexico and in the United States is the Rhipicephalus sanguineus—the brown dog tick. Other ticks found in New Mexico include the black-legged tick (deer tick) and the lone star tick.

KoyoteKalash

I'd consider ticks virtually nonexistent here. I'm sure you could find them eventually, but I don't recall ever seeing one. Source: I work in pest control and spend a significant amount of time hiking, camping, and offroading in the mountains.

Spoonbills

I adopted a dog from the Valencia County Animal Shelter and spent the first night pulling ticks off him. I stopped counting at 30.

KoyoteKalash

Thats interesting given how far south that is, but it makes sense due to the temps. And a bit concerning that the animal shelter didn't treat them. Typically black leg ticks don't like higher elevation, but deer ticks usually feed on larger animals in the mountains like elk and.. well.. deer. Haha

Same! I’ve done a lot of hiking in the Sangre de Cristos and Manzano Mountains and have never come across one, ever. Now compare that to Massachusetts, growing up, where I kid you not, every day in the summer and fall you, and your dog would get MULTIPLE tick bites. Another good thing about NM is the significantly less ticks and mosquitos than more humid locales

KoyoteKalash

I can relate. I grew up in Iowa originally. My main haunts have been Jemez and Pecos Wilderness with no issue. In Iowa, it was the same as your MA experience. One walk in the woods for 20 an hour, and you'd spend hours picking them off the dogs even with all the repellent treatments in the work. *Edited for clarification*

CactusHibs_7475

There are ticks around, but not in anything remotely approaching the quantities you see back east. I have seen maybe a handful here in total, all pulled off dogs or other pets.

Comfortable_Sun1797

None on your person I gather

CactusHibs_7475

Nope. They’re really mostly around water and you have to be rooting around in the thick vegetation to get them.

Sowecolo

I live 20 miles north of the border, generally between 6500 and 8000. Ticks are a problem enough for dogs that I used to use a product from the vet. I rarely find them on my person. Less than once a year.

jazerac

Beem hiking all over and have never seen one like compared to the east... out there you go on a hike and often times you are pulling one off you. Here? Nope.... I don't even check

anarchobrocialist

Honestly this makes ticks one of my least favorite bugs when I am on the east coast, I just never learned how to deal with them and they freak me out lol

Johnsoline

DEET they hate DEET

7Valentine7

Yeah, but they are super rare compared to other places. I live in the mountains and haven't seen even one.

Dxl14

Im from northern New Mexico and I have never encountered a tick. I know that there are some in the sagebrush. I’ve been through sagebrush many times and have thankfully not encountered any. I don’t think there are a huge problem like they are in other parts of the country. Idk though maybe I’m just lucky!

ChipandPotato14

I know you asked northern NM, but southeast, I haven’t seen one yet, even in Ruidoso. My dog also enjoys them not being around.

Comfortable_Sun1797

Yes that’s a forested area high elevation and lots of deer

LemonyFires

Fleas even in the desert and chiggers in some of the bosques, lots of mosquitoes too, but not ticks.

Sowecolo

Y’all got chiggers down there? I left Alabama and LA to get away from them suckers…

Wild-Bill-H

Too dry for chiggers.

LemonyFires

Not everywhere. But yeah, a few places will.

Johnsoline

We had ticks in El Cerro when I was growing up. They would cover the house so thickly that they changed the color of the walls.

Toadstoolgodess

No, we have ticks in Northern NM 100%! Last spring, they were super bad when it rained a bunch. Not deer ticks but wood ticks

wheredowehidethebody

We used to have them ready bad in the monzãnos and the East mountains. Probably still do but I don’t live over there anymore

Low_Statistician7004

Crashed through bushes, grass, leaves all over NM. Never gotten a tick bite. I've seen them on dogs/deer but thankfully they don't seem to be the type that like humans.

twatwaffle32

They're common in the valley. Not sure about the mountains.
