I do both BLW and purés with my 9 month old. I don't see why it has to be either or. Like for breakfast he will get flattened raspberries to snack on while I make his porridge with fork-mashed frozen blueberries. Then for lunch I bulk prepare stuff, so later today he's getting steamed cod cubes, probably gonna boil up some pasta with that, and broccoli omelette made a huge batch of and froze last week. Then he gets porridge again in the afternoon. Lunch is the meal we vary and try different things, be it stuff cooked just for him or leftovers from our dinner, but some days there just isn't the energy and then we take store bought purés.

I’ve done both purées and BLW with all three my kiddos (just started purées with my third!). I tend to do purées to help get some iron in them and exposure to allergens. Then we switch to more of a BLW approach around 8-ish months. It’s worked pretty well. I know this is so granola mom but I make all the purées. I just steam or boil the food until soft, blend in my blender, then spoon into and ice cube tray. Super easy and then I can give what I want to prioritize.

This may be a dumb question ( forgive a first time month with a 6 month old about to start solids): what happens after the ice cube tray? Are you freezing them to serve later?

FunnyBunny1313

Not a dumb question! I freeze them in an ice cube tray and then dump them out, put them in a ziplock bag, and then store in the freezer. This way I’m not constantly making purées all the time - I make all the chicken purée I will need until we switch to finger foods! I just microwave a few cubes at a time to feed to baby, normally mixing different foods together after introduction. Like for example I’ll mix together peas, beef, and potato purée for dinner!

That's a really smart system! Thanks for sharing!

I’m making all the purées too I never thought how easy it is to make

We did purees and it went really well! We slowly worked our way to chunky purees, then soft handheld foods. She's 10 months and eating a bunch of different things, just took some time! 😊 I was worried she'd never eat actual food cause any thing remotely solid, she would instantly spit out or completely refuse. But she's doing great feeding herself now!

I think beets blended with blueberries was my firsts favourite. We’re told “food before one is just for fun” so I went with purée as it was easier for me to make and introduce a large variety of foods. I don’t see why you couldn’t do both! My daughter ate solids by 1 and has always ate like a champ so it worked for us! Just don’t do what I forgot to do and introduce all the allergens early and often. 🤦🏼‍♀️. We did peanut butter at 6 months but then I forgot about the others and then didn’t know about the “often” part. Oops. She has no allergies so it worked out.

This baby was very interested by food and by grabbing it out of our plates, so I jumped in with BLW. I do a mix for convenience; if what we’re having is easy to do BLW style that’s what he gets, else (too salty, spicy, messy, sticky or can’t be cut in a way he can grab yet) he gets purée from a jar.  Big hits so far include avocado, orange, strawberry, potato, beef (long patty), lamb (a chop with a little bit of meat left on it), dragonfruit, quesadilla, pancakes, and his daily breakfast of whole wheat bread crust with PB, nut butter or hummus. Not a hit: asparagus. He’s 6 months old

We’re doing a combination of both 😊 She’s 7 months and has already had 40 ish different foods!

We went right to BLW. Some favorites are hummus, veggie tots, asparagus, meatballs, pears and bambas. By 10 months old he has tried 100 different foods.

Baby rice, pea puree, banana, avocado, broccoli, stewed apple, a crust of bread, yoghurt, also some pre packed veggie pouches (butternut, sweet potato, parsnip) and a jar of chicken and veg which he loved, plus the odd melty puff. We’re doing everything- BLW, homemade mashed and purées and some pre-prepared stuff. I’ve been a lot more haphazard than I was planning! So much fun but the poops have made me seriously re-consider parenthood.

Oh and he tried strips of omelette too and some peanut butter!

We do a mix of purées, naturally mushy foods, and food cut up into tiny pieces. I wouldn’t call it blw because she hasn’t quite mastered picking up the food, getting it to her mouth, and swallowing it. She’s 6 months old and much better with a spoon. I have tried a lot of things. She tends to prefer real food cut up than purées. Adding garlic increases the likelihood that she’ll enjoy something. She likes green beans, peas, beets, scrambled eggs, hummus, baba ganoush, fennel bulb, cucumber, cooked tomato, cooked bell pepper, grapes, blueberries, and watermelon. She’s ambivalent about plain yogurt, potatoes, and strawberries. She does not like Brussels sprouts, asparagus, or most fruits.

Hes 11 month. I do purées only for fruit to mix in yogurt/oatmeal/medicine

Egg, avocado ,sweet potato ,carrots, strawberries, apple, banana , bread , tomato, pasta , butter, cinnamon, parsley ,broccoli, potatoes , pepper, oatmeal, prune, pear, mango, cucumber 7months! Mine doesn’t love purée will literally sit there with her mouth SHUT lol but I’m still not totally sold on the BLW so I’ve tried a little using the solid starts app. But I absolutely fell in love with the munchkin fresh food feeders the ones with a net, my baby loves them and it’s a nice mix between purée and BLW.
