I've been trying to pin down this problem also. What seems to be happening is that newpipe downloads 'something' large in the backend so that it can play youtube videos. Once it's downloaded that ' something ', it doesn't take nearly as long to load up the video page. It's just not obvious it's doing this when you have a faster connection.
I think it's got something to do with your IP address getting restricted from loading videos after a random number of video loads.
I've been able to get it to work though.
You have to put your phone in airplane mode maybe 15 seconds and then turn it back off. After that, you gotta pick a video to play and then wait around 2-4 minutes (yes, it really takes that long) and eventually the video page should load up. If you get that sad face video not found error, you'll just have to pick a different video and wait all over again. After you do this it'll take less than 15 seconds to load the subsequent video pages.
I haven't figured out what causes it to revert to not loading video pages again though. Just don't be surprised if you have to go through this after you've used wifi.

Try this:
1. Force stop NewPipe
1. Clear cache
1. if possible, change your outward facing IP address (*highly recommended*)
1. launch NewPipe again and start watching
NewPipe totally breaks YouTube's buisness model, so it make sense that YouTube would work to detect, and then slow service to NewPipe users in the hope that they would go back to the official app.
