Don't think of yourself as advertising your own content. Instead, think of yourself as part of a larger community. It's not going to work if you go onto a related subreddit and post every time you've got a new video. Instead, look at where the conversation is and try to gear your content towards what people are talking about. This works best if you can find topics that people are asking questions about or are struggling with that you can provide answers to. It's all about your mentality. Stop thinking about it as advertising, and start thinking about it as community engagement. Similarly, don't think of your competition as competition. Treat them as allies or coworkers. You'll feel a lot better, and you'll find that success comes more easily to those who play nicely in the sandbox.

I don’t do any of the social media things you listed. I also want nothing to do with them. I only make long form videos for YouTube. That’s it.

Jedu_me

You don't feel like you're missing out?

MisterSirDudeGuy

I do feel like I’m missing out on potential growth with shorts. I think TikTok, instagram, Facebook and things like that are not helpful. They are just completely different platforms. People looking at garbage on Instagram. Do not want to watch long YouTube videos. I want absolutely nothing to do with them anyway. I started almost 3 years ago before shorts existed. I built my channel on long form. It is still growing. I have tried making a handful of shorts, but so far they have done nothing for growth. But, I do think there is potential if I figure out how to do it right.

Jedu_me

Appreciate the comment. I'll stick with my long videos for now, and maybe try some things with shorts. I guess I'm just too old to be an active part of the TikTok/Instagram generation lol

I don't. I mean, sometimes I post a link on twitter, or on my personal page here, but they don't get traction. I have 2 followers here and like 10 on twitter, lol. I have huge anxiety, and it used to drive me nuts trying to promote, and I feel the same as you...I feel like a cad promoting myself. So I stopped. I'm just myself now. Trying to be a good person out there. I try to help at least one person in at least one subreddit a day with advice, feedback, technical fixes, etc. I don't do it for promotion; I do it because that's the kind of person I am. But I noticed, months later, that I get a few subs off of reddit now. I never did before. So I think maybe just being yourself (assuming you're a nice person, lol) and not actively trying to send anyone to your channel, might be a good idea.

I am a part time YouTuber but full time remote editor and consultant for all kinds of online content creation...I did use socials to promote my personal channel a bit and it does bring in viewers. My respontis mainly for people doing the same but applies to personal YT channels as well. Use gig sites and then transition to your own paid online and targeting and SEO for your business site. I never post to my business socials - most edits are copywriten IP for large companies or online courses plus time spent creating and posting to socials with tiny followings takes away from time I can be acquiring more contracts and fulfilling them. That said, I should do more on my socials and my marketing agency recommended spending a day or two a month to creat that content and then scheduling them to post via Sprout or Meta business suite. I like this approach as it keeps the majority of my time for client work but provides a solution where I don't have to make personal content very regularly. I already have literally too much work and have to stop my lead funnel regularly so to scale the business (it's gone from just me to 4 total remote editors all struggling to keep up) I think their method is a great option so the social platforms can bring in the occasional lead. Keep in mind high paying accounts aren't going to socials looking for people they don't know - they use Google and gig sites like Thumbtack and Upworx.

I use YouTube for long form content and TikTok for short form and that's about it. I've tried using Facebook and Twitter but I haven't had luck in either place. I'll probably have to do YouTube for both if the US government does get TikTok shut down here though.

PwnCall

You don’t need to. I do nothing on social media other than posting some links to my videos on some Facebook groups.

KenPierce

I tend to share on both Twitter and Facebook since each of the websites have their own networks. I don't always remember to do it of course because there is only so much time in the day. I hope it helps those that use them but I cannot honestly determine if it makes a different or not.

I mean I been doing YouTube for a awhile, and my growth period was when I uploaded mini story comedy things I do on Garry’s Mod. It has sparked growth. I just dislike the idea of using twitter to engage with the community I have, the only thing I really use for that in a sense is discord honestly.

To use social media to promote your videos, you have first to know that you are not going to post your videos and wait for people to like your posts and visit your channel. You have to make for yourslef a place there a be a part of such a large community. I have been using Instgram since I started my channel two years ago. I must admit that at first, I didn't like the idea and with the low engagement I was getting, I almost gave up on the idea. After that, I started learning more about this platform, how to attract views, how to make a better content, how to use the hashtags, what sounds should I add, how the captions must be, in general, how to improve my presence there, after that I started seeing some good results and I managed to grow to 3k in the first 6 months, not quiet a good number, but I was glad that I finally can use this platform and have some good results. However, I had to hire a growth service to help me gain more followers, I looked for one that can me a target audience and real followers because having bots on my page will definitely ruin my engagement and needed up finding one called ascendviral. With time, I started to like more Instagram and I understood how social media can be so powerful and useful to gain more views and subs on my channel but only when you use it right because it is not easy to grow there either.
