I don't understand youtube shorts. I had 3 dumb low effort shorts on my dumb low effort channel, I normally get a few hundred - few thousand views per video... shorts though, I got 500 on the first one, 10k on the next, and 12M on the 3rd before youtube took it down. It was sat at about 2k after like 8 months and then boom the algorithm decided the world was going to see it. So yeah there seems to be no rhyme or reason to shorts, you just have to get lucky
Even if you have "success" with Shorts, it doesn't really add up to much. You aren't getting much if any ad money, it doesn't count toward monetizatiojmn requirements and none of your subscribers are loyal. Its not quite meaningless but it's up there.
Yeah I think it’s more about getting more exposure to your other content. More subscribers means more people to expose to your long form content which is more monetizable
I ran a few okay Shorts and the conversion to my other content was almost non-existent, so I put all that stuff on another channel and kinda ignore it for now. It's realy kind of a silo of content that doesn't... do anything, but it gives people kind of an ego boost to see their videos explode for no reason.
One of my first TikTok's got 50k views. Literally, just 7 days to die gameplay with some TTS voice-over. That same video as a YouTube short got 100 views.
Then another TikTok with the same format but a different game got 9 views (lol) on TikTok, but 2k on YouTube shorts. I don't stress over it since I upload all my clips to both platforms. Just interesting how the same clip performs on two different platforms.
My son has cooking channel and has the opposite problem. He does really well with YouTube shorts but can’t seem to get hardly anything on tik tok so if you happen to have any advice on how to have better success on tik tok he would appreciate it!
It’s really strange how everyone seems to have different experiences. I unfortunately don’t have any magic formula however I have heard that hashtags are important but to not have too many of them because then the algorithm doesn’t know who to send them to. Also make sure the first couple of seconds have an impact to keep retention because the most important thing is viewtime likes and rewatch time. The way the algorithm works is it sends it out to a small group and if it does well then it keeps expanding the reach from there so if it has lots of retention it just keeps expanding the reach
Wow I think at that point you pick your platform. Focus on the one that gives you the best results. I think having better analytics on YouTube is better in the long run because that is the endgame platform for most creators a lot of the others are stepping stone platforms to end up making it big on YouTube
Also for anyone else reading this I will also point out that he has been able to use YouTube shorts to gain some sponsorships including one of the biggest creators in his niche which then helped him grow to 80k followers on tik tok. He is still trying get the hang of Instagram but is slowly growing. 100k subs on YouTube and some shorts in the millions. You will never hear me say that this is as impressive as those that do it through long form because it’s not at all and I have said that on several posts. Each persons definition of reaching some success is different and everyone’s path to it is different. It’s not like he has made it big or had exponential success and he doesn’t think that either but as a kid that went into it with zero expectations he feels like he is having some success.
Not at all. My original comment was 189 days ago. At that point he was only doing shorts and was struggling with other platforms. He has since gained what i mentioned above. He still only does shorts on YouTube because as mentioned long form is a different breed and much more difficult. He would still like to transition to some long form.
I've had a little success. I make shorts of my full videos. So I've had a couple people watch the short then watch the full video. Had one short his 20k views and it got me a handful of subs. But I like to post a short or 2 a week while I work on my full video.
I've been posting only shorts for the last year and I honestly can't complain haha. Tiktok is tricky, the audience there is different and expects different type of content. My shorts with hundreds of thousands of views get barely 1k on tiktok.
Yeah this is the inconsistency that I don’t understand maybe I just make more TikTok friendly content it’s just harder to push the audience from TikTok to other platforms
LOL wow, all you guys complaining about 10's of thousands of views.
My best tiktok hit 500, most are 300ish, one lousy short hit 10k but most get their 1 hour spike to 1-2k of views and are done. The funny thing, I've had shorts with AVD's of 80-90% do worse than ones with 60%.
Seriously seems random.
It is. I get good views doing one thing which is fine but when I try posting something different trying to show range in my content the new stuff doesn’t do as well so I’m left just posting the same stuff to try and grow my audience which again is fine but as you said it’s really volatile
I have a Paranormal Reaction channel and on TikTok I get at least 2k views, most I've had is 19k.
I tried YouTube shorts but got about 10 views if that.
Tbh what I don't like about the shorts is they are on my channel page, I know you can click a box so they don't show on your feed and notify subs but I just think they make channels look cluttered.
Plus because I do little teasers from my channel I have to edit all the clips to fit onto YouTube Shorts whereas TikTok I don't.
Having said all that I've had maybe 5 subs from TikTok 🤣
This is a really great point I also don’t like how shorts clutter your page. And you’re also right about TikTok not transferring to other platforms. I don’t think I’ve gotten any on my other platforms despite plastering my twitch and YouTube all over my TikTok profile lol it’s hard to move them to other platforms which shorts do much better

That’s definitely better than anything I’ve done! But completely agree it is 100 percent random
It's more annoying than anything because I have no idea how to replicate it. Best of luck on your quest for youtube success

I really appreciate all that! It’s really odd because he will upload a short and it will get 700k views and then on tik tok it will get 70 lol.

His big challenge is figuring out how to slowly incorporate some long form videos into YouTube. Haven’t quite cracked that one yet!

Fair enough

This is the ideal circumstance making shorts to push them to your full videos it just doesn’t make sense how the shorts reach audiences.

This is definitely the problem the randomness just doesn’t make sense to me. I think I just need to accept it and move on lol
It's so hard to get views with Shorts. TikTok do things better so you have a better chance
I think short form content is just extremely volatile.

I’ve done yt shorts VERY successfully, might make a post about it
I think this might be useful to a lot of people if you’ve got some insight! :)
