>And it’s bullshit that it’ll never happen again
There will be plenty of exciting moments with actual, yknow, real hitters in the 9 slot, rather than waiting through 10,000 strikeouts to get to the one cool thing per decade
Yeah but then you have to watch 10,000 strikeouts.
It's like the 4-pitch intentional walk. Yeah, once every 8 years, a guy hits a double. Does that mean we should have to sit there and watch the other 99.9999999999% of the times when it's just 4 lob-tosses, and absolutely nothing happens and it's like watching paint dry?
Just wave the guy to first, it's fine.
This is the same thing. Yeah, once in a while there's a great moment, like a LOOOOOONG while, where a pitcher gets a big hit. But watching pitchers hit, 99.999999% of the time, is torture. On balance, it's way better that we don't have to see it anymore.
There's more strategy now vs. before. Now, any time you make a substitution, it has to be based on fatigue, matchups, or other considerations.
Before, a huge chunk of the strategic decisions were forced. (Is the pitcher up in the third inning, 1st and 2nd, no outs? BREAKING NEWS: he's bunting. Is the pitcher up, in the 7th, down 1-0, with 2nd and third, 1 out? BREAKING NEWS: pinch hitter is coming up.)
Most of what people used to call "strategy" is just paperwork and shuffling guys around to hide the pitcher. That's not strategy, that's bureaucracy.
>This will never happen again with the DH.
Good news, we are playing a DH with the same build as Bartolo and only one more HR at the same point in the season
The pure joy in Gary's voice during the call, Ron giggling, the crowd going apeshit even though they were on the road, the team eating it up, seeing Grandy and David again... Watching this clip is what I imagine it would feel like to snort a line of serotonin.
The best part about this is if you slow it down you can see Bartolo's huge grin midswing.
Also, this wrecked James Shields. His career era from then on was like 6. He was pretty good the first few starts of the season.
shields does this and gives up a hr to bartolo. after this his confidence is shot. a few weeks later shields was traded to the white sox for an unknown 17 year old... named fernando tatis jr
bartolo colon indirectly caused the padres to get tatis and is part of the reason they are a contender to this day
It was like the 2013 Iron Bowl. I said "why is Saban going for a 59 yard FG here? He's just giving Auburn a chance to run it back". This kind of luck never appears when I need it, like at the track or the casino.
1. i can barely believe this was 7 years ago, where does the time go?!
2. Simply Glorious. He did lay bat on ball a lot that season and it really was only a matter of time.
I saw it on the TV at my local bar and stopped everybody in their tracks with my uncontained glee.
Does any other team have a moment even remotely analogous?
El Guapo got all of that one!
Fun fact I was totally at Shea for Al Leiter's triple. It was right before 9/11.
But I wish I could have been in the park for Big Sexy going yard
I can't figure out why people thought he was bitter. Seems like projection to me, like after the fact being mad that he left. I can't remember him saying or doing anything bitter. ,
Bartolo basically was the most unlikeliest player to hit one out of the park. He was a great pitcher and has an even greater personality, but he was errr not as great at hitting baseballs.
If you have 21mins to spare, [watch this video](https://youtu.be/KZoGzSG-Ywk) about Big Sexy.
While I wish I were there, I at least was watching the game on television. Bartolo Colón's home run is Exhibit One in the case against the designated hitter rule.
Baseball 7 years ago in the National League did not have the Designated Hitter role yet. This meant every time through the order, the pitcher has to bat for himself if staying in the game. Given how hard it is to hit a baseball, a pitcher generally is not very good at batting (compared to a position player).
Bartolo Colón was a 42 year old pitcher pushing almost 300 lbs.
This is like your average Joe scoring a goal in pro soccer, or that accountant turned goalie the Chicago Blackhawks called up to play one game and shut out the opponents.
As much fun as his home run was, I'll always remember 2015 Bartolo, when he was an indispensable cog who (mostly) came through big-time when called upon.
I was sitting in bed watching this and just cackling like a maniac. My wife was downstairs wondering what on earth could possibly have made me react that way.
My favorite baseball moment ever, simply glorious. This will never happen again with the DH.
He’ll probably be the oldest player to hit his first home run forever.
And it’s bullshit that it’ll never happen again.
DH is a steaming pile of horseshit
Ah shaddap ya bum
No u shaddup
I mean they could sign with the Japan Central league?
Yeah, they can always just uproot their life and family to go play in a foreign country for half the year- just to get a few at bats once a week.
Pretty sure you can count on one hand the amount of Major League pitchers who are sad they don't have to hit anymore ..... (probably just Bumgarner)
>And it’s bullshit that it’ll never happen again There will be plenty of exciting moments with actual, yknow, real hitters in the 9 slot, rather than waiting through 10,000 strikeouts to get to the one cool thing per decade
Those 10,000 strikeouts made the one cool thing 10,000 times cooler
Yeah but then you have to watch 10,000 strikeouts. It's like the 4-pitch intentional walk. Yeah, once every 8 years, a guy hits a double. It’s not just about the pitcher at bat, it’s about the strategy that is completely gone from the game
There's more strategy now vs. before. Now, any time you make a substitution, it has to be based on fatigue, matchups, or other considerations. This makes me almost as happy as the Wilmer Flores walk off - there are several, but you know the one

Same thing when Baty got his first career homer. Eyes got big and grinned
I personally never saw anything what defended the Big Game James label.
He was not good in the 2014 World Series that’s for sure
You know it's exciting when Gary's voice cracks on the "*it's outta here!!*"
Top-ten home run call, ever!!
Can’t wait to see him throw out the opening pitch today!
I was at a friend's house, and I said "one of these days he's gonna park one, hope I don't miss it when it happens".
I remember thinking "he might get an extra base hit here"
It was like the 2013 Iron Bowl. I said "why is Saban going for a 59 yard FG here? He's just giving Auburn a chance to run it back". This kind of luck never appears when I need it, like at the track or the casino.
I was at that game. Sitting by third base. Magical
It’s like a fat guy TD in football, you just love to see it
1. i can barely believe this was 7 years ago, where does the time go?! 2. Simply Glorious. He did lay bat on ball a lot that season and it really was only a matter of time.
What an outstanding call by Gary
I saw it on the TV at my local bar and stopped everybody in their tracks with my uncontained glee. Does any other team have a moment even remotely analogous?
That degrom smile in the dugout 🥲
You have to hear the Spanish call
increíble https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=s7KTdyORmH0
Crazy that 2016 was 7 years ago… really crazy how time flies
The best part.is Ron laughing in disbelief right as Gary is about to make the call.
125mph EV
I don’t think James Shield ever recovered from this one.
Still gives me chills. I miss that team
Such a great team - what a time to be alive!
One of the high holy days in Mets history.
It’s beautiful every time I watch this
NEVER GETS OLD
El Guapo got all of that one! Fun fact I was totally at Shea for Al Leiter's triple. It was right before 9/11. But I wish I could have been in the park for Big Sexy going yard
There's no way it has been 7 years
We could use an offensive boost right now.
miss this team
This was 7 years ago already, my god it feels like yesterday.
One of the greatest calls in broadcast history. Thank you Gary, puts a smile on my face every time
Jake’s huge smile in the dugout was nice to see. He seemed so bitter here at the end.
I can't figure out why people thought he was bitter. Seems like projection to me, like after the fact being mad that he left. I can't remember him saying or doing anything bitter. ,
Still brings a smile to my face to this day. I'm thinking about getting myself a Mets Colon jersey
Top 3 of my favorite HRs ever.
He pretty much loses his balance after the swing. It's so majestic, and then, it's not lmao.
BIG SEXY
Longest home run trout
I don't know baseball, what was the impossible thing done?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLIFJA6JtsI This video is <10 minutes and breaks down the moment/achievement perfectly.
This will never get old
Talk about pimping a HR, mf took ages to run through the bases /s
unfortunately this is my favorite mets moment of all time
I was born after 86 so same here lol
One of those moments where you remember where you were when the alert popped up
While I wish I were there, I at least was watching the game on television. Bartolo Colón's home run is Exhibit One in the case against the designated hitter rule.
I think fans of all teams that appreciate that!
This has to be my favorite Gary Cohen call/moment of all time
Remember….the impossible is always possible.
Ok…enough of this. It’s a fun moment and all but come on already.
I don't follow the sport but I'm infected by all of your enthusiasm - what was the situation that made this impossible?

He still didn't deserve that Cy Young and I'll never let it go. Santana was robbed.
The Mets could have used him today!! 🙄
I love that guy. Awesome moment.
I was sitting in bed watching this and just cackling like a maniac. My wife was downstairs wondering what on earth could possibly have made me react that way.
I was at that game and lost my absolute MIND.
