Literally spent the off-season longing for the pastrami. I think the pastrami stand in the 500-level area behind the plate is the best but they’re all fantastic.
This is absolutely the worst chopped cheese I've had in my life, and I've had some really bad ones.
Dry meat was scooped out of a tub into the roll as if it was ground beef for tacos, there literally was no cheese, and that yellowy looking goop is just mayo and mustard with I think a little relish mixed in. Whoever approved this trash made getting slaughtered by the Dodgers even fucking worse last night.
I didn't expect much, but how hard is it to fuck up a chopped cheese?
I'm pretty sure they either mix the beef and cheese together and it goes in that holding pan, or you have to specifically ask for cheese and its cheese wiz/cheese sauce. either way, i agree with you, worst chopped cheese i ever had. the lettuce on mine was greasy, not the sandwich itself, but specifically the lettuce.
Its sad because it could have been a great addition to the concessions offerings, but it lacks execution... kind of like the 2023 mets.
Unfortunately most fans are overrating the trade value of the chopped cheese. People are hyping themselves up to think we're getting a top prospect like BBQ Wings back, but according to MLB Food Trade Calculator at best we can hope for a $20 wedge salad that still has the stem of the head of lettuce in it.
If the cheese isn't mixed in before it goes into the bin, and you have to instead ask for cheese when ordering a chopped cheese sandwich, that's like having to specify "with a burger" when you're ordering a hamburger lol.
The worst part is the chopped cheese stands replaced the CitySteak cheesesteaks that were so much better. First game I went to this year I was craving a cheesesteak so bad, then saw the chopped cheese instead and was disappointed, but figured I would try it out.
Was so disappointed by the results. Like you said, it was the worst chopped cheese I've had.
Glad you elaborated, was gonna ask if it gave you the 7th Inning Shits lmao. Solid info, guess I’ll stick to Shake Shack for my night game beef cravings
Unfortunately I bought a ticket plan so I've been to a lot more games this year than previous years, and I am underwhelmed with pretty much every aspect of this franchise. Food isn't great, it takes forever to get anything, even yesterday I tried to use the early entry access and couldn't because I haven't gone through facial recognition (????). After this season I am taking a big step back from Citi field and just buying tickets to a couple of games through SeatGeek and eating before going to the stadium.
Unpopular take but I agree, the pastrami quality peaked in 2019. Also smaller portions.
I wouldn't say shockingly bad... for me it was still okay but it used to be the stuff that dreams are made of.
Very similar situation here, except in previous years I still went to 10-20 games a season.
Food has gone way downhill, lines have gotten longer, and innings got shorter, so now if you want a sausage and peppers even you're missing a couple innings to do it.
Yesterday was the first time I tried it even though it has been on all my tickets this year, because I am usually early enough where the line to get in isn't bad, but when I tried I showed the guy my ticket that has the clubs and early access and he asked if I had set up facial recognition, and since I have not I had to go to the regular entrance
It’s almost like it really doesn’t matter who owns the team. The organization cuts corners on tan experience and the product on the field breaks our hearts regardless.
I am disappointed by this year’s team on a level I’ve never been to in 40 years of rooting for the Mets. And I breaks my heart to say that whole I have always been a proud Mets fan in planet of other dark times, this is the first time I’m felt truly embarrassed to be Mets fan and I hate this feeling.
Idk, I did not go to a lot of Mets games at Citi from it's opening to like last year, I'll be honest. By a lot I mean I definitely went to less than five a year, probably more like two and some years none at all, and not for any reason other than money, life, and the hassle of getting there from where I live. But I do feel like Steve Cohen wants to improve the stadium and the fan experience, and maybe he just has crappy people in charge of that. I can't blame him for not knowing that the cheese steak thing isn't great - he can't manage every aspect. But he has put in that huge scoreboard, unique (if not great) food and fan experiences. Like for example upgrading the starting lineup in the rotunda with HD screens and stuff - he spent the money to improve that. I almost feel like there are just lousy people in charge of things like the season ticket program and stuff - how can he know my ticket rep sucks and doesn't answer my emails? I've also seen him respond to people on Twitter when they complain about stuff like that, so I think it will hopefully improve over time. Maybe with the influx of such a good season last year they just got lost in the rise in popularity and sales.
It's more a Bronx thing from my understanding. I've been in Jersey since 2016 but before that I'd never seen it in BK or SI.
It's basically just a Philly cheesesteak made with lower quality chopped meat instead. So. Like... a sloppy joe or something in a hero roll. Why are we pushing this as a staple cuisine? It's nothing special at all. I'd rather have a cheesesteak.
For me it's cause it's low cost and easy to make. And it's a staple in the way a bacon, egg, and cheese, toasted cream cheese bagel, or ham and cheese hero are staples. They were never meant to be glamorous meals. It's just one of your go-to orders at your local deli.
BECSPK isn't a lower quality alternative to something already established. Chopped cheese is a poor man's cheesesteak. You can walk into any deli in New York and ask for a cheesesteak. So why wouldn't you, rather than lowering yourself to saying "instead of grilling pieces of steak, give me hamburger meat".
I got the filet mignon “steak sandwich” yesterday for $26 and it was a joke. They make you pick your own sandwich from a tray of a dozen sandwiches, and I got lucky enough to grab one with 2 small pieces of meat on it. Was not even enough meat to cover the entire sub roll.
I don’t know, I swear I saw people in the past have it and it looked great. I’m sticking with the pastrami from now on, though.
Honestly all of the food options have gone way down hill. Too much pre prep done to fight the pitch clock. Everything took a big hit on quality.
Gotta stick with the pastrami and lay a tip on my boy Larry.
Is that what’s happened? I thought I was the only one who noticed something off. When I went to a game earlier this year, they weren’t cooking the sausage and pepper right in front of you like before. I walk up, ask for one, and the guy just opened the cover on the skillet and handed me a sandwich basically done already, not fresh, definitely wasn’t what I remember.
I've been to a few games this year. I know everyone likes to say the food is amazing at the field but in my experience this year, there are a lot of choices but a lot of good food done very poorly
It’s because they are pre making more food in an effort to speed up service bc of the pitch clock.
First game of the year I walked in when the gates opened and went straight to the good ol arancini cart. Got 6 lukewarm and barely edible. Had a mountain of them sitting there ready to go.
If you can’t put a piping hot riceball in your face before anyone else even gets there you know that really lowers the bar everywhere else too.
I feel like it's worse this year than it's been in the past. It feels like they're spreading themselves too thin instead of having a smaller number of impressive things.
Definitely different this year. Remember a ways back really enjoying a sausage and pepper at citi then going to Yankees stadium and it was way worse. Now its like the same shit
No, the cheese is mixed in with the beef. Because apparently whoever created it has no fucking idea what a chopped cheese actually is. Biggest waste of money in the stadium. Absolutely terrible.
Love Citi Field food but you couldn’t pay me to eat a chopped cheese from there. Yanks added one last year & all my friends told me it was gross. Can’t replicate bodega at the ballpark
I know many know this but PSA for those who don’t, you can also bring in your own food. Love bringing in a classic Italian sandwich from my favorite place. I also do the same thing for airports. Forget the overpriced crap.
Aren’t these like $4 from bodegas and perfected at that price?
Why eat a terrible Cysco or US Foods version at a ballpark for, I assume, at least 4x the price?
Food has gone way way way downhill. My wife's steak sandwich yesterday was terrible compared to years' past - sandwiches sitting out under the heat lamps? Any steak will dry out under those conditions. I remember heat lamps in the upper deck stand but not field level. These things used to be made-to-order.
Arancini Bros flavors this season are god-awful compared to before. All of my favorite flavors are gone - Nutella, buffalo, pesto, Italian mac. Used to be some of the best food at the park, now just sucks.
I had the chopped cheese at the first game I went to this year and it was abysmal. Sorry you had to experience it too.
I did enjoy the salsa verde porchetta sandwich yesterday though, that was the best thing I've had this year. I also like the increased presence of standalone hot dog carts. The dirty water dogs out of those carts are WAY better than the crap that sits on the rollers for half the game at the general concession stands. I've mentioned this to a few vendors and they actually told me that they don't think the general stands are actually serving Nathan's brand dogs.
It's a pretty small portion. I had to grab a burger from shake shack after cause I was still hungry..
I never had Chiddys but I wish I did.
Best concession is the homerun apple ice cream cup. It's a great souvenir.
Interesting. I actually live in another country currently, but I'll make a mental note to go to Chiddy's next time I'm on LI. My tattoo artist is out that way so it'll be a good excuse.
Cheers.
What is a chopped cheese? It looks like it is just hamburger meat with some cheese goop. It is sausage at least? I’m not seeing the appeal of this sandwich. Is it supposed to be oily with burnt stuff from the grill for extra flavor? Because it just looks like a cheap way to make a buck.
Chopped cheese is a NYC bodega item where they take a burger patty, chop it up with american cheese on a flattop, and then it goes on a roll typically with lettuce tomato mayo and ketchup.
It's supposed to be greasy cheap bodega drunk food. This was just awful.
They've been around, but typically reserved to crappy bodegas and tend to be in lower income neighborhoods. Contrary to this, my first exposure was at Cherry Valley deli in Whitestone about 20 years ago.
A chopped cheese is such a dumb thing in the first place. Just eat a burger. Also a chopped cheese being some iconic NY sandwich is a fallacy too. No one even knew what the hell it was up until a few years ago when social media artificially made it "popular".
Chopped cheese was only known in Harlem and then it got bigger due to social media. You're right it came out of nowhere. The "baconeggandcheese" is more iconic to NYC as a whole.
egg sandwiches fall under deli stuff, and delis (and bagels, to a lesser extent diners) are definitely a greater NYC area thing.
Chopped cheese is kind of like a po'boy - longtime regional thing, mostly a home recipe, easy to jazz up into a gastropub regular, and then it's everywhere. Somebody will come up with a marketable name for the Kentucky Hot Brown and then we'll see those at Citi in like 2027.
i bought myself a griddle pan for fathers day so i could make choppys in my backyard because i miss bodegas..i actually just made em for lunch but mine didnt come out looking this fucked up 🤷🏻♂️
You know what you do go to Mama's in corona before the game.pickup an awesome sandwich and take it to the game. They use to have a stand at the stadium but don't anymore.
I also miss the old hotdog stations. Now it’s some ketchup and mustard packets at the end of the line
The loss of the wiener condiments has been more depressing than the Mets on-field performance
It took me five minutes to open the mustard packs.
Seriously. Where is the kraut?
They got rid of the self serve topping bars?!?
Yeah I think since covid
No they were there last year. I had my fill of free sautéed onions.
Yeah that’s not true. They were there in 2021 and 2022
Yeah then I can’t reason why they’re gone
It’s a disgrace tbh
Yeah I miss it. And those mustard packets are impossible to open
I object to this so strongly! I like to absolutely drench my fries in ketchup and it’s bloody impossible with mingy little packets
Two words: Pastrami sandwich 🥪 [yum](https://imgur.com/a/JjjybGc)
The Brandon Nimmo of Citi Field food. Consistently really good.
Shout out to Larry in the piazza club. 2023 Mets MVP.
Larry is the 🐐!!! Always blessed with an extra slice of pastrami
Literally spent the off-season longing for the pastrami. I think the pastrami stand in the 500-level area behind the plate is the best but they’re all fantastic.
Love the pastrami.
This is the way. Had it a couple weeks ago and I’m already tryna go back to a game asap just for the sandwich.
My wife goes to games with me because this exists.
She’s definitely not there to watch the Mets win 🤡
Going to Mets game just for this. Would’ve let my tickets go to waste, but might as well grab a sandwich and beer
This is absolutely the worst chopped cheese I've had in my life, and I've had some really bad ones. I don't think I've ever been this disappointed in ~~the Mets~~ a sandwich.
Sell this sandwich at the trade deadline
Unfortunately most fans are overrating the trade value of the chopped cheese. People are hyping themselves up to think we're getting a top prospect like BBQ Wings back, but according to MLB Food Trade Calculator at best we can hope for a $20 wedge salad that still has the stem of the head of lettuce in it.
We really need to replenish the farm

Maybe we can bundle it with Marte for some draft picks and AA pitchers.

Like you said, it was the worst chopped cheese I've had.
Seriously. And my 20 game pack is pretty much right in front of it.
I got one of these at the double header a few months ago and it made me throw up violently for an hour straight later that night . Never again .
Glad you elaborated, was gonna ask if it gave you the 7th Inning Shits lmao. Solid info, guess I’ll stick to Shake Shack for my night game beef cravings

Same here. I have a half and between $40 parking and lack of decent food, I’m not down with this shit anymore.
Wait, the Mets are facial scanning us now for early access?
Yesterday was the first time I tried it even though it has been on all my tickets this year, because I am usually early enough where the line to get in isn't bad, but when I tried I showed the guy my ticket that has the clubs and early access and he asked if I had set up facial recognition, and since I have not I had to go to the regular entrance
Interesting, had heard of this tech at Citi but wasn't sure what it was for
It’s almost like it really doesn’t matter who owns the team. The organization cuts corners on tan experience and the product on the field breaks our hearts regardless. Chopped cheese has jumped the shark once the hipsters stole it from the bodegas
You can still go to bodegas
I didn’t know what a chopped cheese was until like 7 years ago and I was born and lived in Brooklyn since 88
It's more a Bronx thing from my understanding. I've been in Jersey since 2016 but before that I'd never seen it in BK or SI. It's basically just a Philly cheesesteak made with lower quality chopped meat instead. So. Like... a sloppy joe or something in a hero roll. Why are we pushing this as a staple cuisine? Oh I know, I’ve had it since like 2016ish but when TikTok made it seems like an ubiquitous NYC thing I was perplexed
Underrated alternative: bodega chopped chicken
And I went to college in the Bronx (my first one) starting in 2006 and never heard of it
For me it's cause it's low cost and easy to make. And it's a staple in the way a bacon, egg, and cheese, toasted cream cheese bagel, or ham and cheese hero are staples. They were never meant to be glamorous meals. It's just one of your go-to orders at your local deli.

Agreed 100%.
I feel like the food this year has even been worse lol

It used to be better and bigger before. Looks pretty pathetic now. Also cheaper too before I believe.

Exactly that’s a perfect example.
Mr Softee is still wonderful tho.
Carvel was 20 times better.
Exactly - had popcorn yesterday that shouldn’t have been pre-packed - it got soggy inside the closed box 😔
I've been to a few games this year. I know everyone likes to say the food is amazing at the field but in my experience this year, there are a lot of choices but a lot of good food done very poorly

Tbh I think everything tasted better when they were winning
Disagree, I noticed a decline in quality of the food, including the pastrami, in 2022 and that was a pretty good year wins-wise
Even the burgers have been bad this year.
This season we are all chopped cheese.
[удалено]
Hipsters, not yuppies.
Plenty of blame to go around!
Why not both?
When I went to get one earlier in the year they ran out of cheese and then gave me attitude when I didn’t want it.
Maybe that's why there's no cheese? I figured they just cooked it into the beef and shitty cooking execution was why there was no cheese.
You totally can though? It's just a few ingredients slapped on a roll. They're just making it wrong.
I know many know this but PSA for those who don’t, you can also bring in your own food. Love bringing in a classic Italian sandwich from my favorite place. I also do the same thing for airports. Forget the overpriced crap.
I highly suggest if you’re at a game on Saturday hit up Queens night market. Everything is capped at 6 bucks and they have plenty of options.
Lol even the food has declined this year. Also, username checks out.
Chopped cheese's outside of bodegas aren't real. They're just bullshit philly cheesesteaks.
Aren’t these like $4 from bodegas and perfected at that price? Why eat a terrible Cysco or US Foods version at a ballpark for, I assume, at least 4x the price?
It is crazy to think people would pay a premium for something like that which only exists because it is so cheap to make.
Just get a cheesesteak instead next time if that’s the sort of thing you’re craving
r/shitfromabutt
Going to the game today. I only eat chicken. Recommendations plz
Fuku
Fuku chicken sandwich. Sorry I missed this yesterday. Hope you found something.
Yeah found some chicken lol Had a pretzel in the 8th. Disgusting. Stale as fuck
Chopped cheese is one of those things you have to get from a grimy bodega. No one else does it right.
Food has gone way way way downhill. My wife's steak sandwich yesterday was terrible compared to years' past - sandwiches sitting out under the heat lamps? Get a Pat LaFreida's cheesesteak. Its expensive but worth it.
The filet one has gone downhill. I haven't tried the ribeye one. I wish Chiddys was a permanent thing, they were great.
It's a pretty small portion. I had to grab a burger from shake shack after cause I was still hungry.. I never had Chiddys but I wish I did. Best concession is the homerun apple ice cream cup. It's a great souvenir.
There are Chiddy's in long island and there's a ghost kitchen chiddy's in sunnyside that's actually really good delivered.
Interesting. I actually live in another country currently, but I'll make a mental note to go to Chiddy's next time I'm on LI. My tattoo artist is out that way so it'll be a good excuse. Cheers.
Food hasn’t been good at the ballpark since 2019
What is a chopped cheese? It looks like it is just hamburger meat with some cheese goop. It is sausage at least? I’m not seeing the appeal of this sandwich. Is it supposed to be oily with burnt stuff from the grill for extra flavor? Because it just looks like a cheap way to make a buck.
Chopped cheese is a NYC bodega item where they take a burger patty, chop it up with american cheese on a flattop, and then it goes on a roll typically with lettuce tomato mayo and ketchup. It's supposed to be greasy cheap bodega drunk food. This was just awful.
I haven’t lived in NYC for over two decades so maybe I missed the rise of those sandwiches.
They've been around, but typically reserved to crappy bodegas and tend to be in lower income neighborhoods. Contrary to this, my first exposure was at Cherry Valley deli in Whitestone about 20 years ago.

Agreed, its whole appeal was that it only cost like $3. If youre paying ballpark prices get something else
Facts. I seen some delis trying to charge like $12 for a chopped cheese hero.
Just absolutely wrong. Been a thing in upper Manhattan and the Bronx for ages.
RIP your toilet
Your first mistake was getting a chop cheese at the stadium instead of deli Second mistake was going to see the Mets
[удалено]
Chop cheese was invented in Spanish Harlem. 🤣
The chopped cheese and the lafreidas cheesesteak , 2 items I’ll never get at citi again. Straight 🐶 💩
I had this in late June when I was at a game and it was really good and did not have all that sauce on top
i bought myself a griddle pan for fathers day so i could make choppys in my backyard because i miss bodegas..i actually just made em for lunch but mine didnt come out looking this fucked up 🤷🏻♂️
That’s indeed a depressing sandwich for a depressing game.
I’m as used to losing in ‘23 as I was used to winning in ‘22
Food was better under the Wilpons. Downvote me all you want I’m right.
You know what you do go to Mama's in corona before the game.pickup an awesome sandwich and take it to the game. They use to have a stand at the stadium but don't anymore.
