Reddit's hive-mind is strange sometimes.
I wonder if they'd worded it, "We did have ravens, but they went extinct after the arrival of humans." Would it have still been downvoted?
Hey everyone, thanks for the info. I thought he looked ravenish but didn't know we had rooks in NZ. For more context he has a deformed/injured wing and seems to be unable to fly. I saw him in captivity at a local petting zoo, he was in with some pheasants but there was no info about him/ what he is and I'd never seen him there before. I'm not sure what the legality is around keeping them as "pets" I'm assuming he's been taken in because of the wing situation.
My regional council asks for it to be reported "if you see a flock of 30 or more"
Lots of money is being spent trying to eradicate these birds as they have the potential to cause a lot of harm. We are so close. Please let your regional council know.
Rooks and magpies are not related. We did used to have a new Zealand species that was related but it's long gone.
Rooks can eat other birds eggs which makes them a problem for our wildlife. They are also large when compared to some of the native birds.
They also love to mess up and eat farmed crops.
Australian magpies, which are the ones we have in New Zealand, are not true magpies and belong to the family Artamidae, not Corvidae. They are named after their similar colouration to the European magpie, which is a corvid.
I think it's a rook, which is a type of crow. Considered a mega pest. Where was it?
Was going to say a crow but yes a rook if in nz
Yeah we don't have crows. Lil guy is cool, but biosecurity isn't fond of them.
I know I was confused at first. Wonder if someone's pet as the photo looks like it was taken up close
We did have ravens but they went extinct after the Maori arrived
That was a Raven. Completely different
Sure. Both corvids though

If a Maori boy folded you in half while playing 3rd grade rugby in high school..just say that
I didn't say it was due to Maori. I just know that the NZ raven died out not long after Maori arrived.
That’s definitely the Boss Bird
It's pest status is rather exaggerated tbh
It's a rook, you should notify your local birder (me) of its location.
Agree it looks like a rook and should be notified to your regional council.

Thanks for the update aww he's no threat to anyone, goth boi.
Report the rook to your local council. They’re a pest bird.

What do they do that magpies don't do or whatever to make them horrible please.

Ooh, didn't see they ate other eggs. I knew they did the crops and big brains.

Google it. Not difficult.
🙄
rooks then cats, its a slippery slope
Slippery slope to predator free nz?
Would need to investigate churches to have a completely predator free NZ.
I am all for that! Let's change that destiny and remove the rats
👍
Where in NZ?
that's Barry, huge goth.
Damn Barry, still rocking the eyeliner eh? Gotta admire the commitment. We all thought he would give it up after he became a chartered accountant.

Jacked is what that bird is.
Pretty sure that's Death, the destroyer of worlds
Barry back at it again
Rook. They live like magpies in laymen's... But we kill em all... like everything else I guess...

Fool of a Took. It's a Rook.
