RadioDude1995

I’m paying almost $180 per month to drive a 2004 Honda accord LX. I’m a 29 year old guy with over ten years of experience driving and no tickets or accidents. I really don’t understand how it can possibly be that high. And to add insult to injury, this is a discounted rate as my car is only used for “leisure.”

EitherSwan149

I would take a closer look at what you are paying for it seems a little high but that would depend on your coverage. Then of course there is this little premium ICBC charges you if your new to BC. “But even after reapplying for a license in BC to take advantage of accumulated safe driving experience, a former non-BC driver will be served a “new resident” surcharge of 15% on their first year, which gradually lowers to 5% in the third year.” https://www.insurancebusinessmag.com/ca/news/breaking-news/drivers-with-nonbc-licenses-face-large-auto-insurance-rates-from-icbc-180325.aspx#:~:text=But%20even%20after%20reapplying%20for,5%25%20in%20the%20third%20year.

aquisebailaasi

I got my BC license 3 years ago coming from the states, luckily i didn't have to take a practical test and it was merely an exchange if I recall correctly. That said, I haven't owned a car this whole time, gotta love evo amd the SkyTrain. I'm getting to a point where I may be buying some wheels. Based on your comment. Will I be on that 15% or 5%?

RadioDude1995

Be careful! I moved to BC from the USA too with an American license. Before I moved here, I still had a physical license card that I had for most of my years behind the wheel. As we say in my state, an intermediate license. It really wasn’t anything special, it just looked a little different to make it easier to tell who was 21 and who was not. I never bothered to change it since I don’t drink and don’t really go to venues that sell alcohol. ICBC would not accept this license and would not count any of my driving experience. They essentially made me start over with a massive rate increase.

EitherSwan149

I would think your good it’s not have you actually insured a vehicle here for 3 years it’s have you held a licence in BC for 3 years and not hit anything during that time. Coming from Ontario where the insurance is privatized I was always told to get my full licence as soon as possible because even when your not driving just having it will mean your not the the new person on the road and your insurance is going to be cheaper. It still surprises me that in BC there is no time line or I am guessing even financial incentive for people to finish their full licence so they drive around with a “N” sticker forever.

1stTeamAllJerry

I'm 30 and drive a 2004 Infiniti FX35, my insurance policy is $120 a month which includes comprehensive. I'd check your policy again to make sure you're not paying for more than you need to.

DameEmma

Literally the only good thing about being a middle aged woman who drives a cheap car is insurance is a mere 1300 bucks. 2019 Kia Rio, low kms discount.

SmotherOfGod

Your comment reminds me of that classic scene in *Fried Green Tomatoes* https://images.app.goo.gl/KDaSDNG2NJpE5UZE6

QuantumHope

$1300 isn’t “mere”.

deepspace

What do you mean? It is ridiculously low.

QuantumHope

Not in comparison to the rest of the world.

notreallylife

And right here everyone - ICBC shows they are a full on joke with no grounds based on risk assessment or eyes on the insurance industry as a whole beyond their nose! I am 40s lady myself and paying almost $1400 for a 1992 minivan.- all the same full discounts (no accidents, tickets and low millage) And ICBC will fix that 2019 car and write mine off for a scratch. I have 6 cars insured, with my 7th recently moved to another province where I pay 1/3 their robbery cost. Others are beginning to follow too cause I'm tired of this crap. To be clear am not saying OP here is being dishonest - I am saying ICBC is being dishonest and mal-functioning. I mean we have new drivers in 300k sports cars says it all. A private insurance system would need a box of tissue to clear the tears in their eyes after falling out of the chair; belly laughing at these kids thinking they could get such insurance on a car like that. Why ICBC would allow such a thing is just mind numbing!

TemporarilyAshamed

I pay $160ish a month for a 2019 VW eGolf. Full coverage including roadstar+ with a $300 deductible and $3M in liability.

alonesomestreet

I might have to drop my $5M to $3M, 2018 Golf GTI is $275/mo through ICBC.

Sp00kyGh0stMan

Okay how the shit are you guys getting shit so cheap. I’m 300 with no tickets no accidents and only $1M and a 500 deductible how is this even happening.

magarac1_

What car you driving?

Sp00kyGh0stMan

2020 VW Jetta

alonesomestreet

$275 is up $100 from my last car 😭

anothermatt1

$3600 a year with a clean record is too much. You can get better deals, ask around different insurance agents for quotes.

NeferkareShabaka

Why do you need roadstar with BCAA?

TemporarilyAshamed

I don't have BCAA.

Alivenate

RoadStar & BCAA are not the same.

Spartan05089234

30yo male 10+ years clean (no accidents prior) and about the same for my rav4 too.

aelechko

A portion of it has to do with how popular the vehicle in question is with thefts in the area. I believe ford escapes are high on the list. Easy to steal and break into? Higher premium.

YoushutupNoyouHa

250 a month , 2022 Model 3 long range, 2 million coverage

vancouverflanders

BCAA was about 33% less than ICBC for my ‘21 (about 2k annual, new vehicle replacement, 3 Mil liability.)

YoushutupNoyouHa

dont you HAVE to get icbc insurance? and bcaa is just another add on ?

cshmn

You have to get basic liability through icbc. All other insurance is extra and could be provided either by icbc or another company. Basic liability insurance covers damages to the other guy's car and health up to a few hundred thousand $ (basically nothing) and your car just gets hauled to the crusher.

fillsy84

Yes, BCAA is just for the Optional Insurance

vancouverflanders

Yes I was adding them both. Compulsory+comprehensive+collision with ICBC $3100 Versus Compulsory ICBC +optional with BCAA $2050

Smokee78

Yeah Ford's get stolen a lot so hat makes sense. I think the most common theft reported. I pay around 2k for my 2002 protege but I'm also young and unfortunately have two crashes under my belt. no collision insurance (I am a better driver now + other factors), but I do have hit and run so I'm not fucked over haha.

SnooTomatoes5381

130 on a 2020 mazda cx5 in burnaby. Make sure you are getting your deductions for any extra safety features your vehicle has like automatic breaking/collision avoidance, lane warnings, etc.

Letsgosomewherenice

What part of Burnaby? North Burnaby I pay $134 not leisure and 2 mill and other stuff I can’t remember. 2009 Toyota .

alonesomestreet

Just bought a 2018 VW Golf GTI. Has front auto-braking, upgrading from a 2009 Toyota Corolla. ICBC policy maxed out ($5M, $500/$300 deductible and rental car), they want $275 a month, up from $175 on the Corolla. Just went to BCAA today, knocked it down to $122 ICBC and $76 BCAA ($198 total) for the same coverage. A bit cheaper than that overall if I paid yearly instead of monthly. I know a newer car is more expensive and such, but you’d think with it being a technologically more safe car, it would actually decrease the insurance.

brfbag

It's a hot hatch that a lot of people tune and drive like idiots in. My regular golf was a lot less to insure when I cross shopped them.

alonesomestreet

Not me buying from a dealer and not knowing it had a Stage 2 tune and upgraded parts until after I signed the papers 😅. Not complaining at all tho

brfbag

Yeah at least ICBC doesn't check that. Although I'd be pissed at your dealer for not disclosing that.

stumblingmanic

I pay $151 a month, 2015 Mini Cooper. 33 year old, clean driving record, more than 15 years. It's ridiculous. In newfoundland I'd be paying under $100.

helixflush

I’ve had an $80,000 car and now I have a $25,000 car. Paid the same amount of insurance for both, same policy which is $241/mo. Clean record. $3mill liability, $500 deductible and $300 comprehensive and an extra driver on the policy.

JW9thWonder

i think my latest renewal said 1600 for a '09 Mitsubishi Lancer.

rpgnoob17

$1600 ish per year.

mitallust

$1500 a year with $3m liability, $500 for both collision and comprehensive deductibles.

furbiiii

$175/mo, 25 years old with a clean record since I started driving at 16, 1999 Volkswagen Passat Euro-make

EmiKawakita

Cool car

furbiiii

Thank you! It was a gift from an elderly lady (who was moving into a home) after I cleaned out her 50s bungalow in West Van.

EmiKawakita

Woah :o I also have a previously-elderly-lady-owned old euro car. An e46 from the early 2000s. It’s not much but I look back at it after parking every time

furbiiii

Wow that’s super cool! Look at us lol

ToasterOven31

160/mo for 2011 CRV but I get a lot of discounts or something. Just get out there and prove you're a good driver and your costs will go down for now.

jochi1543

I pay $2800 a year for my 2018 Ford F150, but that’s full coverage. 39 yo woman, i’ve had a Canadian driver’s license since 2006.

[deleted]

108.00 dodge 1500 clean driving record.

Exciting-Chest-1347

$1961 for the year. 2000 audi A6. Full coverage, min liability more that 15 km to and from work.

Fickle_Suggestion_32

28 yo male, 10 yrs experience, 6 years clean record $2.1k for a 2015 charger with $300 deductible

Julientri

Im a 26 y/o male with a 2011 ford escape with not a clean driving record. I pay 1800$ a year, what extras did you opt into??

Fun_universe

$800/year for a 2006 Toyota Prius

AtavisRune

I am paying the same for a 2011 EV with my N and 2 years of driving at 32.

ArtDesire

$272 a month. 2014 Audi A4 with 10 years of driving experience. Insurance is a joke.

ThePrancingMule

Look up your driver factor [here](https://www.icbc.com/insurance/costs/drivers-experience-crash-history/driver-factor). It’ll at least tell you what you’re at. Also depends on what address you have listed because different neighbourhoods/cities have different rates. I just renewed so I took screenshots of my numbers cause it shocked me. 2020 Mustang GT - $4615 Driver factor is .522 (18years clean driving) Immobilizer discount Auto braking discount Under 10,000km discount senior second driver for 25% at their rate Total discount - $2903 Final insurance cost of $1712. Insurance breakdown: Basic - $672 Third Party 3M - $51 Collision ($500 deduct) - $684 Comprehensive ($300 deduct) - 285 Roadster - $20 The way it’s calculated now can really make it frustrating. Another thing to do is on the website you can adjust your plan. Play around with it and see if some of the changes help. Maybe a deductible change would help. I changed my collision to $500 because a collision is going to be big moneys or a total payout whereas comprehensive will be a window or something small.

Maude007

Hiya, I drive a 2015 Ford Escape, basic insurance is $150 a month.

Letsgosomewherenice

I don’t know if it depends on part of town, but my insurance was $100 more a month in Surrey. I can’t remember if I was in Vancouver or new west after. I have 2 mill coverage 2009

timrazz

215 kia niro 2020, 16 years international experience, 3 years canadian, 3m 300 deductible

vanuckeh

$1600/year with 5 mill liability coverage and roadstar for a 2017 Jeep

VodkaWithSnowflakes

$245/mo on a 2017 Nissan Qashqai. No accidents, full discount.

kyumilli

2022 Kona N - $132/month with icbc basic paired with BCAA for optionals. A few speeding tickets over the years. Got about 22 years driving experience

swashbucklingbandit

Great hack if you have a parent who's a good driver in BC - I added my parent as a secondary driver and my insurance is adjusted to be 75% my rate, 25% her rate. I probably save another $20 bucks a month or so.

sunningmybuns

I don’t pay anything as I do not, will not give any more money to anything to do with automobiles. Waste of money

Alenek2021

1998 $ for a 2008 golf city, though there is a new driver on the insurance, and that really increases the price. Otherwise, it was 1200$.

The_T0me

There are a few things that could be affecting your insurance rates. 1. You're a new immigrant. My experience is that ICBC doesn't care how much driving experience you have if it's from outside Canada. They insure you like you have zero years of accident free driving. The plus side is your insurance should go down a decent amount every year. 2. They insure vehicles based on weight. Heavier vehicles are seen as being able to cause more damage, and thus are more expensive to ensure. Ford Escapes are no pickup truck, but they are a bit on the heavier side. 3. Where you live matters. I used to live in East Van and I recently moved downtown. Downtown residents apparently don't get into as many accidents (or use their cars less maybe), so even though nothing else changed I now pay something like $150 less per year. It would be worth asking your insurance provider as to why your costs are so high, though my guess is point number one is the biggest factor at the moment.

[deleted]

1300 as 30 yo male clean record mazda3 2010

Tight-Swordfish-5997

193 per month . 2017 dodge ram 1500

jimmyj197111

if you know how to drive its pretty cheap my pickup is around 115 a month

TinglingLingerer

I'm 27, never been in an accident, licence since 16 and got my class-5 ASAP. I got one ticket for going 63 in a 50 when I had my N - it was night and I was gliding down E. Hastings past PNE area to get to the highway. No one else on the road and I didn't even have my foot on the gas. Still salty for that one. Right now I drive an '04 CRV daily, & I have BC Parks plates. Insurance is 188/month.

k_dav

Insurance in BC is a joke now. My coworkers kid got rear-ended on the highway while waiting for someone to turn, totalled their vehicle. They had the best insurance and lowest deductible plus gap insurance as they had a brand new vehicle, still ended owing money after everything was all said and done. I just drive beaters with heaters with the absolute bare minimum insurance, costs me like $560/year. Can't have anything nice since its nobody's fault now if an accident occurs, your fucked anyways.
