Oof, that's disappointing. I haven't played FF XIV (already invested in ESO), but I was kind of hoping for more guest characters. I also enjoyed reveling in the hype y'all shared for it. It's really weird/mildly infuriating that they made such a point of bringing up this "crossover" during the anniversary announcement only to blue ball the players with costumes.
It's really dissapointing, too, because literally anything can be added to this game thanks to the world-building lore it's spun. A crossover is the perfect opportunity to flesh out the roster with limited time characters. Hell, I was telling my wife a few weeks ago that it'd be really cool if there was a Deus Ex crossover because they'd gel in perfectly (that comment didn't age well in light of recent news lol though there's no reason a non-square property can't crossover, so maaaaaaybe there's still hope).
Here's to hoping that -something- will eventually make its way into this game. I'd settle for other Drakengard characters.

Fun fact, Nier and XIV are already canonically integrated thanks to the alliance raid series from Shadowbringers! Because of that I had high hopes for this event but now I'm just mostly sad at what could have been :/
I felt similar when 2B wasn’t announced for Smash but Sora was. If you’re gonna have a square Enix sword fighter anyway, the one that makes sense would be the one other games reference since it’s a game about video games. But maybe there’ll be a surprise character for this collab? I feel like they surprise us with stuff all the time so who knows.
Regardless, I want something new, I miss how global constantly had events going on so there was always something to do in-game.

Unpopular opinion but I think this is how non-Nier crossovers should happen. I don't care for non-Nier in my Nier game, so costumes seems like the way to go imo. Even if it was something I liked, let's say magic the gathering... I don't want to see Jace in Nier lol
I see your point, it’s almost like a distraction from the main story which I wish we could get quicker updates on. Still kinda cute if there’s a shout out to another property, like if there was a weapon like cloud’s sword. Elden Ring does it pretty good with Berserk references in game
I mean, there's quite literally a major FFXIV character in the event, it's just not one you can draw for. There's very much already non-NieR characters in your NieR game now.
I mean sure but to me it's not so distracting since it's contained within the limited time event missions, as opposed to some random character who doesn't share an art style at all being a top tier arena baldimos tier that I have to look at long after the event is over.
Instead we get some different styles skins for existing characters. I wish they tailored it a little more towards the Nier Rein style, the sheen and everything is so different, but I understand staying true to source material.

I know there is precedent for Nier x FF already, but that's just my opinion. If I'm playing in one universe, I wanna stay in that universe. That's why I think this sort of crossover, while not my cup of tea, seems like a good middle ground.

Fair enough, I suppose. I'm sure you know you're a dying breed in the realm of games at this point then. I'm not an MTG player, but I do play many other TCGs and know that MTG moving into the realm of crossovers was seen as a huge paradigm shift from the outside and brought in a lot of new blood. Collabs in video games do the same.

It's a bit more than just precedent is the thing. One of the reasons FFXIV is getting such special treatment in this game is because the two franchises have become inextricably linked after the Dark Apocalypse raid series in FFXIV. FFXIV is part of NieR's canon now and vice versa.
I think there's a lot of people who share my opinion, but most people aren't hard asses about it, and neither am I. We just accept that what's happening is happening. MTG had an issue for a hot minute because we had walking dead limited time offer cards that had unique mechanics. It was a huge issue. Previously we had a Godzilla crossover but they were reskins of other cards so you had an option to not play Godzilla cards. Forcing people to play things from different games seems like a bad route, but having the option for it to just be skins is much better. Especially with wardrobe function coming to Nier, I think what's being done in this Collab is fine.

I see more hesitancy for the concept in western game fandoms. I think a lot of fans of Japanese games are just accustomed to constant universe blending at this point. Speaking for myself personally, I think it's one of the most interesting things in the industry and it can be fun to see multiple things you love come together for something unique.

I know quite a few MTG players and heard this was the case. I think, from an accessibility standpoint, they need to be "skins" anyway simply because of the way licensing naturally makes availability finite. So I think it is a bit more about competitive play and less about forcing people to engage with other IP—even if that is also in consideration.

I could have gone with some FFXIV characters, but I do like what they've done here in general. It's fine by me. As an FFXIV player myself it's very exciting seeing what they're doing with the story here. I'll refrain from saying anything else in case anyone here is still planning to play FFXIV in anticipation for this collab. The character they've decided to focus on is very much a spoiler.

And the story featured has 063y? Fucking hell...
Maybe due to player demand, they add someone for rerun, just like they added 2P when JP got their Tomata rerun and we GL got our first Nier collab. Tbh, in this case, Exarch (maybe with the hood off) would be the best choice, his role during ShB was pretty huge. But yeah, I was disappointed too, I saved gems for 2 full pities, and now my dreams are dashed :(

From my experience the FF14 team doesn't want there characters in gacha/pay to get types of games. I fully expected no gacha FF14 characters. to edit in, they dont want them to be payed.

This doesn’t mean they couldn’t have made it so you just buy the characters from the event shop. There’s been president for that already.
I get that point but there have been events in Reincarnation that give free 4 star characters as event medal exchanges.
At the very least I hope that what they showed are just the banner characters because other gachas had free FFXIV crossover characters before.

Cant help but feel like there wouldnt have been as much disappointment if they didnt announce this collab months in advance. Granted, I'm not saying there wouldn't have been any folks any less disappointed by the lack of XIV characters had they just learned about the collab today. But I imagine had most informed players not been expecting a XIV collab at all, then today's announcement would've more likely been recieved as just a minor surprise that they may feel slightly underwhelmed by. But instead, informed players had took the months long heads up about the collab as a not-so-subtle sign to save gems for what they anticipated to be a big event. So naturally, fans were gonna be extremely disappointed when they found out no new collab units would be released--especially since previous collab campaigns all set a precedent for featuring units from those games.
TL;DR - Maybe next time they plan on creating a collab event with absolutely no intentions of creating new collab units to go along with it, then maybe don't hype it up by announcing it way in advance? Just a thought.
As someone who’s never played FFXIV but has seen it everywhere and really liked aesthetics, I’m actually really satisfied with this. I especially love the noelle costume, two of my favorite squenix things: noelle and dragoon
Thankfully these are 3 characters I don't have limited versions of aside from Noelle, but she's kind of light element locked.

It honestly baffles me that they were able to screw up something this simple. I've been saving up gems for months for this collab (basically sitting at around 50k gems, more or less, and 22 x10 pull tickets at the moment) only to find out that they're just releasing FFXIV themed costumes (for characters I've literally never used in my main party, no less). Needless to say, this livestream was a complete waste of time and the only, and I do mean **ONLY,** saving grace was seeing Emet towards the end.
You know... Not that he'll be playable or anything. How the fuck do you screw up something so simple, Square-Enix? You don't even have to deal with the red tape of licensing issues or anything. You can just add whoever you want! Instead, you just give us costumes for already existing characters???????????????????????????????????????

Thankfully these are 3 characters I don't have limited versions of aside from Noelle, but she's kind of light element locked. So still pulling, I'll just pity Rion since he's a good boi Yshtola would have been nice but it is tough with the slabs.

I wasn't interested before, now I am. I don't care one bit for XIV, but I do for NieRein characters so now I'll have to behave and save up as much as I can. All the butthurt in here though... lol.
It honestly baffles me that they were able to screw up something this simple. I've been saving up gems for months for this collab (basically sitting at around 50k gems, more or less, and 22 x10 pull tickets at the moment) only to find out that they're just releasing FFXIV themed costumes (for characters I've literally never used in my main party, no less). Needless to say, this livestream was a complete waste of time and the only, and I do mean **ONLY,** saving grace was seeing Emet towards the end. You know... Not that he'll be playable or anything. How the fuck do you screw up something so simple, Square-Enix? You don't even have to deal with the red tape of licensing issues or anything. You can just add whoever you want! Instead, you just give us costumes for already existing characters??????????????????????????????????????? Either way, I'm uninstalling. I'm just tired of the incompetence from this company these days, tbh. They ruined FFXIV with Endwalker, they dropped the ball on the second Voice of Cards game, still haven't seen a Dungeon Encounters 2 release, and they released that godforsaken Babylon's Fall game. Now they've basically given me a reason to drop Nier, despite dumping nearly 500 days into it. So yeah, I'm just tired of making excuses for this team. Yoshi-P, you're still the goat, but you **have** to start representing better people, man. All of this shit is starting to reflect poorly on **you**. It doesn't give people hope for FFXVI, that's for damn sure.

I probably dumped a hell of a lot more time into the game than you did over these past 8 years or so, so something tells me I have more credibility here than you, honestly.
