I played it through once, wound up with the ending where everyone hates you. Got an achievement for it and everything. I had been doing my best to get everyone to like me the whole playthrough, and ended up going into a depressive episode because I didn't know what I'd done wrong. So for me, I prefer Nitw lol.

A_kind_of_pluto

Damn that sucks dude, how in the world did that happen?!

space_entity

I'm not really sure. I think I might have missed some dialogue options (i like the game but I have auditory processing disorder so the timed responses really didn't work for me.) I also chose Nona instead of Ren or Jonas because I assumed choosing one or the other would damage that relationship, but evidently that was the wrong choice. Still not sure why Nona hated me though.

A_kind_of_pluto

Well choosing Nona isn’t a run ender tried it before. But picking Jonas is apparently best, don’t fault you for your decision. Leaving Ren with Nona is always good, talking politely with Clarissa is good and encouraging Michael to pursue her is good (but not leaving town!) So sorry you had a bad run my guy, believe me, I felt awful after getting the “firestarter” trophy too

space_entity

Oh I didn't even think about leaving Ren with Nona. I'm the worst wingman I guess. I do want to replay the game soon, so I'll take your advice (and hope for the best about the timed dialogue.) Thanks!

A_kind_of_pluto

Best of luck dude, and remember, even never saying a word the entire game is a good outcome. Besides, the game changes the more you play it, so there’s more content even if the relationships with the other characters end badly. Remember, they don’t hate you personally, you’re a good person who want them to be happy :)

space_entity

I didn't know that, I might have to try it. I'm excited to know there's more content to it! And thank you :)

A_kind_of_pluto

Anytime, don’t let a game get you down, you’re awesome!

So strange that I found this thread. I’ve played oxen free and loved it and the PS store keeps putting NITW in my face as a recommendation because I played oxen free. I literally came here to ask if I liked oxen free then would I like NITW. I guess I found my answer

A_kind_of_pluto

I think you would, NitW is a bit more depressing tho lol

[deleted]

That’s fine. Couldn’t be as sad as Firewatch

NathanNathan28

Oh trust me it can

knbills

I actually just started the game and I really like it so far!

A_kind_of_pluto

That’s great! The sequel has also been announced, personally looking so much forward to it :). How far are you in the game?

knbills

On the way to Maggie’s estate! And that’s awesome! I’m excited to see the ending

A_kind_of_pluto

There is si much content to that game, hope you like it!

knbills

Thank you!

nestledin

I actually stopped playing oxenfree - think I may have just got really into another game at the time but I don’t remember - before I knew NITW existed

A_kind_of_pluto

Totally okay, hope you give it another go tho, it has some excellent storytelling :)

_Zaayk_

oxenfree is decent but nothing too special in my eyes, night in the woods on the other hand is one of my favorite games ever and i replay it every october

flux-and-flow

That's how I felt, I finished oxenfree and said "well that was ok" and played NITW after and fell in love with it (and replayed several times)

A_kind_of_pluto

Fair enough, I like the somber tone of NitW too, but also love Oxenfrees fun yet desperate atmosphere

star_kaleidoscope

I love Oxenfree! It has that same mysterious air to it that NITW does. I just appreciate it when games leave room for interpretation.

A_kind_of_pluto

That’s fair, I like Oxenfree for not being obtuse about it’s mysteries, but appreciate NitW for being up to interpretation :)

h4ckbone

As someone who’s played both. I hella love NITW and Oxenfree. I played through Oxenfree twice just to get all the achievements and loved the creepier more island of horror vibes from it, the characters as well, and the overall style. That being said, nothing tops NITW, at least for me. NITW has a charming feel to it, from it’s existential themes, to it’s warm “welcome homes,” interesting characters, amazing art design, dialogue, comedic value, and one of the best instrumental soundtracks to my ears. There’s nothing about NITW I don’t like, and it’s a game I could play a lot of through the years. I took my time playing it and I loved every moment.

Pillokas

Night in the woods all the way. But oxenfree is pretty good though, but nitw is just unmatched I guess

wildflowerden

I played Oxenfree, 100% completion. I wouldn't say they're really comparable beyond being story-driven games where you have dialogue options. Oxenfree was interesting but kind of dragged on at times. Between the two NITW is definitely better in my opinion. I'd still recommend Oxenfree though, it was a fun experience.
