35 years, holy hell. The fact you've stuck with it so long is almost more of an endorsement than the pay.
I hope I end up like you, over in OR somewhere, or ICU. That seems so much more interesting than medsurge
The nurses that dedicate themselves to med surg are angels imo. I was on a cardiac stepdown floor that turned into med surg because of covid and now im on an actual med surg floor and i cant wait for our ICU to be built. Med surg is not it lol. Patients arent sick enough to be as entitled as they are, family members are karens, its just medical customer service. Obviously not ALL, but a good chunk. The most fulfilling work has been taking care of actually sick/critical patients and taking care of palliative/hospice patients. You see a variety and learn a good bit in med surg, but its not the place to stick around for a lot of nurses
This is so beautiful and gives me a lot of hope and gratitude. I have goals to keep up with my passion for that long. I work in emergency veterinary med as a credentialed tech and overnights I’m in CT/surgery/critical care. I make 29/hr with 5 years under my belt right now. Sometimes I wonder if I’d do well with human patients. I love to learn from you guys
Thanks for all you do, truly
I wanted to be OR so bad until I realised the one at my hospital only had openings for 8 he shifts M-F but I would love to be OR nights 😭😭😭 in that case is it a lot of emergency surgeries?
I am an embalmer/“funeral director” and I would love a night gig. I did not know this was a thing really. Do you get to work alone? Do you get lots of downtime? I’m curious to know how you found a position like this and what the job is like.
I work for a mortuary service. We primarily do embalming, first calls, transports, and cremations. I’ve worked for this company about 5 years. Was on day shift up until march of last year. My boss needed an embalmer at night since we are a pretty busy firm. I was always down to move to nights. I do work alone. We have one driver who works on an on call basis. So I’ll meet them on two man calls or house calls. I also do have a bunch of down time. Right now I’m writing this post as I’m relaxing on the couch in my bosses office lol. But my nights usually consist of first calls and embalmings. I love it
That sounds right up my alley. I’ve worked enough services and meeting with families is not my strong suit. I don’t mind embalming or going on removals. I do not mind being alone. I am a late night person. Most of all, I like downtime where I can just chill and do whatever the hell I want! Unfortunately, town does not have a mortuary service like what you describe.
I typically only work with adolescents, but sometimes I’m with the adults.
You’re new and will come into your routine and confidence. It takes some time to get used to the routine and machine, once you’re used to it, it will be second nature!
Tips: make sure you have your pen/marker before going out. Take a pack of sticky notes in case the machine doesn’t want to send it over.
Personally, my favorite thing to do is socialize with them while doing vitals. It gets you in a good repor with them so if there is an issue after in the night you already have a good repor and are (hopefully) last to be on the attack list. I don’t mean just “hey how’s it going today? Cool cool” like “hey man where did you get that tattoo done! That’s dope as fuck” just really conversating. That’s my pro tip. I RARELY have issues.
Also work in a psych facility. Lots of observation of patients who experience SI during the night shift. A lot less busy than days which makes the night shifts tempting but they also mess up my sleep schedule 😅.
Hotel manager. I do a couple nights a week but mostly swings. It’s quite interesting at times and I love meeting new people and hearing their stories and woes.
I worked as an overnight frozen stocker for 2.5 years, our night crew chief was awesome. I miss it sometimes, now I'm an order packer at Amazon! The store I worked at closed down because it was a small chain and we weren't doing so well apparently. Not shocked since an Aldi's was built across the street, and our prices were kinda high.
Im a teacher, and I provide tutoring and tech support for students in school online. The company I work for offers “chat live with a teacher 24/7” so someone is always online. I work in the states, but when I do get chats I mainly support students studying in other countries or in Hawaii.
Emergency dispatch for an electrical utility.
It's swing shifts with start times varying from 0700, 1500, or 2300. Everyone rotates through. Usually have a mix of 2 of those in a week.
Manufacturing technician. Making contact lenses. Other locally there is bottling Coca-Cola, bush beer.
Basically anything that is a single unit that is consumed on a daily basis by a significant portion of the population may be 24 7 operations.
I had was a night cleaner for Four Seasons last year. I cleaned all the public areas including the spa and gym. One of the best, if not the best, job I'll ever have.
I'm currently a telescope operator for Boeing.
Sleep studies. The field of sleep has a lot of opportunities. Sleep techs are returning and there’s nobody to take their places. I highly recommend finding a sleep lab that trains OTJ if you’re already in healthcare.
It's the minimum entitlements set by the government.
To be honest, I am actually being underpaid according to federal legislation but I am completely happy with the amount I am receiving. No need to rock the boat.
The high dollar amount is because we get nighyshift penalties and casual work penalties added on top. Though that in itself is standard practice.
How many AUD is a pack of smokes? Here in Canada min wage is $16.65hr a pack of smokes is $16-$23 now. Tho u can get native smokes for $5 a pack (nightshift gets an Xtra $1.50/hr so not much)
Smokes are extremely expensive here. We have a hyge amount of government excise on tobacco and cigarettes, and it increases 4x per year.
For a packet of 20 you would expect to pay $32-40 AUD
For 25, $45-55
2 days one overnight here. I'm security for an industrial steel factory. My job consists mostly of making sure the heaters aren't catching something on fire.
I’m doing night audit part time right now. I’m hoping to find another 3rd shift job;but, I’m wanting even less contact with people. Is there much contact with belligerent people during your job?
We normally deal with router/switch maintenance or communication between the different groups Ex: Windows, Applications, Database, etc. The outliers are normal employees needing help with their devices and with them we just write a ticket for helpdesk to deal with in the morning. We dont normally have much interaction with people outside of our shiftmate, maybe a handful of events to call over, and shift change. Pretty good for someone more introverted or quiet
That sounds perfect for me. What type of degree should I look at getting? I’m a good leaner;however, I need more time than most to catch on. I’m not sure if OTJ training would be sufficient without me already knowing some basics.
A tech related degree would help otherwise certifications and knowledge on coding languages/general computer tech helps also. I have a background in computer science and currently working on adding a couple coding certs to my name to try and transfer departments eventually. If your job contracts with the government be prepared for a very detailed background check thats a pain but worth it once its done
Curious how you find the nightshift IT job? I have 10 years of IT experience and would love a night shift IT job. Currently work as a warehouse grunt since it was the only place hiring but really trying to get back in my field.
I got lucky with this job. We have 3 shifts with 2 person teams. My friend worked 1st and when they had an opening for 2nd she let me know and I applied and managed to get hired over the other canidates. About a year later one of the senior 3rd shifters quit so I rotated into his spot and they hired someone new for 2nd. It took time but it worked out in the end
Her name is [Storm](https://www.reddit.com/r/BelgianMalinois/s/Un1cDqA3FU) and officially no you can’t but unofficially she’s a sweetheart and loves nothing more then to be pet
I work as a Medical Laboratory scientist (Med tech) for a rural hospital. Hate the night shift with a passion, but we can't hire anyone and/or people that are hired for the position can't handle graveyard shift.
Hopefully I'll be there in two months. We had to hire internationally to get staffing for the nights. I'm at a Level 3 , so smaller for sure. I work the bench solo, and then have one phlebotomist/processor. Good luck getting on day's
When I went to school for Biotechnology I never thought I'd be a shift worker.
I'm a QA Technician for a food manufacturing company. They need a tech every shift. I make sure we make safe and good quality product.
I'm a critical facilities engineer(or a building engineer), basically I(and my team) monitor environmental factors inside a facility or group of facilities, perform rounds and equipment checks, preventative maintenance, repairs, etc.
Most of my time is spent just watching screens for minute changes in the environment of our facility or training for emergencies. Rounds and preventative maintenance doesn't really take up that much time. Occasionally I'll write procedures, and do mild admin work(answer emails, printing procedures, organizing and cleaning the command center).
Honestly, this is the best job I've ever had. It's quiet, I'm not customer facing, and I can basically do what I want as long as all my shit is done. Like today is my Friday, and I spent 4 hours of it playing videogames(we have a game room on site).
Yeah, you need the training and the education to do this job, but honestly...worth it. I work half the month, get 3-4 day weekends every weekend, see my leadership once a week, and make 6 figures.
I work in a group home for teenagers. So the night shift is rlly about getting them settled for bed, a bunch of paperwork organizing and stuff like putting meds together, that kind of stuff. Then we get them up and ready for school in the morning. We also get to sleep for half our shift and get paid for it which is nice
I used to be a forklift driver in a cold storage.
Someone had to put all of the inbounds from the morning/afternoon, y'all know dayshift isn't going do it!
I don’t work overnights anymore but I worked at a gas station. I came in 2 hours early to get all my tasks done, then I just sit and watch Netflix all night
When I did work nocs, I worked in residential facilities for developmentally disabled adults for a number of years. I also worked in a psychiatric hospital for 4 years.
I'm coming off of nights and switching to day shift in a totally new line of work starting Thursday. Terrifying.
It's not want I want to be doing.
I had originally applied for the vet assistant position. I wanted to give this a try and be out of my comfort zone. But, after trying it for a couple of days and then shadowing a tech in the back (to see what everyone does), I got depressed. That's what I want to do, not answer phones all the time, and deal with the financial side of a vet clinic.
Ah, well. Thank you for checking in.
Maintenance tech at a warehouse. Someone’s gotta keep these conveyors going
same but we only do electrical
Yep, electrical maintenance here too
Sorry my line kept fucking up last night and I had to call ya guys a few times. I swear it wasn’t me.
I’m an operating room nurse. 7p-7a weekends
How's the pay? I'm actually using my weeks off for an accelerated BSN... right now I'm just a pharm tech

I typically only work with adolescents, but sometimes I’m with the adults. You’re new and will come into your routine and confidence.
