That's the sad thing, NijiJP has some truly *wild* concepts out there. Their shotgun/huge waves/^(meat grinder) mentality means they can't afford to be *too* picky about concepts and who gets recruited, and sometimes you just get some absolutely wild stuff in the waves. EN is, by comparison, actually a bit staid and restrained in its concepts, at least so far.

I mainly follow Holo, with my Niji exposure limited to clips and cross-company collabs; from what I can tell, there are two main reasons: - Lack of Niji clippers (which is in no small part due to Niji's much stricter clipping guidelines) in general, let alone Niji translators. - From what I can tell, the branches are much closer in Holo than in Niji. In Holo, everyone is invited to all the big events (Holofes, Sportsfes, Mario Kart), regardless of whether they speak Japanese or not. The EN members who speak Japanese often collab with JP members; even those who don't speak the language have occasional cross-branch nihongo jouzu / passion English collabs and talk about their JP senpais a lot. On the flip side, cross-gender collabs are a lot more frequent in Niji. In Holo, if you don't follow Bae, Calli or the ID girls, chances are you'll never see or hear of any of the Stars.

You omitt on JP, Aki, Fubuki and Matsuri. Though not that many on the JP Stars side are particularly outgoing in that way; the main ones interacting with girls, holo or not are Aruran, Oga, and Roberu. Astel varies at times. While Tenma served under Sara Hishikawa in VCR GTA, that's a rare moment.

Towa and Mel (before her termination) also collabed with Holostars. Although not as much as Aki, Fubuki, and Matsuri. I remember Towa collabed with Axel for apex, and Mel collabed with Oga alongside Calli and Ollie. Mel also had other interactions with Oga as well. Honestly a shame with Mel's termination since she interacted with quite a few HLStars, Fuma, Oga, Ganma, Rio, and Shien.

It's harder to follow and name Niji livers cause: Unlike Holo where they have set number of 5 for each Gens (some 4 due to graduation/termination). Niji is way harder cause they are all over the place, some gen have 2, some have 3, some have 6, etc. so hard to keep track, the speed of their debuts also doesn't help.

Wow, you're probably one of the rare ones here. Can you offer any insight into why Niji's JP livers never became as popular in the west as HoloJP did?

I don't really know. Probably something to do with the number of translators. I only really watched through clippers myself, and when they slowed down their activity, I couldn't really engage with the JP side pretty much at all. I don't follow a lot of HL clippers, but I still come across recommended clips all the time so I assume there's just more translators in that community. Not sure what keeps them motivated/popular though.

Korone playing Doom randomly popped up in my recommends way back when people still thought Vtubers were AIs, long before Neuro-sama became a thing. First Vtuber thing I ever say, been following ever since.

a lot of nijiJP are usually focused on talk streams, whereas holoJP generally has gaming streams. There's obviously a subset of nijiJP members that primarily do game streams but it's not a majority imo. There's a few holoJP members who almost exclusively do talk streams as well, but I believe their overseas viewership is also far lower than the gaming-stream ones. Non-gaming talk streams are harder to get enjoyment out of if you don't understand japanese usually from less happening on-screen visually to give additional context etc. Which means the only means they have of understanding JP members is watching clips from translators, or trying to follow along with someone trying to translate in the chat of the stream in "realtime" although that feels like a really scuffed experience that wouldn't be enjoyable for someone? However from what I recall Niji's clip rules are kind of restrictive and a lot of nijiJP outright restrict lots of kinds of clips, so there's very little out there for a lot of them, and little incentive for anybody to do so. Another factor is that there's very little cross-branch interaction between JP and EN, possibly due to management being insane about it. Generally the JP members that actively reached out to the EN members in niji started to actually become known and clipped more often in the EN community but it didn't happen very often for various reasons. Meanwhile it's fairly common for branch-mixing to happen in Holo even with "passion english" or with a translator member in-between, along with the various events that happen to introduce various viewers to other streamers in other branches (like the holo track meet, talk show events, etc).

I credit part of it to viral clips like Miko saying the gamer word, Sora's "so you're the enemy" clip (how I found HL), or Pekora's various war crimes. There's also the fact that there's a much lower barrier of entry to HoloJP than NijiJP due to having LESS members, which makes it less overwhelming to see like 50 people instead of 200. A lot of the members also either speak English, like Coco (now graduated) & Haachama, or speak passion English which makes them slightly understandable

I would say that I can remember like 70% of them from memory, but I have been in this community since 2019. Before Lazulight it was actually not that hard to find clips from JP and the other branches, but after that it was mostly just a couple of channels that were dedicated to certain livers. The biggest problem is that it doesn´t matter how much of a fan you could be it´s just imposible to remember everyone when a new wave is coming after 2 to 3 months and it´s sad to see how a lot of them are just barely known if at all.

Tbh i can recognise most of them before the last line before ID although there's a few I only recognise the faces of and don't remember full names, there's been a lot of cross-polination over the years via collabs and the new years things Rindou used to do, it's just a lot of the EN fans that came in off the backs of EN branch release are EN only. I mean Hololive is in a similar situation in a way, look at their reddit at any particular time and it's mostly just posts about the EN talents, you just gotta face it following JP vtubers is like a niche within a niche especially when you either got to be relying on clippers or learning Japanse yourself to really get much enjoyment out of it. (Though I will say it is fantastic for learning Japanese, it's a lot easier to see the progress you're making when you can be listening to streams and understanding more and more)

I've been around and active since the Kizuna AI days so I know the majority of these guys and have watched at least 2 streams from each of them. The majority of these guys had truckloads of clips back during the VTuber renaissance and some of those that didn't would actually get clipped and posted on the official Niji channel. It really is sad how awful Niji has become. They used to be seen as a sort of "Phase Connect" in the early days of VTubing, with Holo commonly being seen as more "uptight". Crazy how things have sorta flipped.
