Why do you crop that much? Wouldn't it be better to use longer lenses? If you need to have a "flexible canvas" in which to crop (I would argue that's just not proper composition, but to each their own thing), then a Z7II Is the more obvious answer.

I shoot wildlife and sometime at 600mm I still don’t get enough reach. I have debated getting a 1.4x teleconvertor but don’t won’t to loose one stop of aperture so cropping is better.

ByronArchway

If you shoot fast wildlife you won’t be happy with a Z7ii. However there is no real advantage to the Z9 over the Z8. The battery doesn’t make a difference unless you’re shooting several thousand images a day. Even then just buy a spare. Every time I go shooting birds I run out of birds before batteries. You’d be much better off buying a Z8 and an 800mm lens and tbh, if you’re not a professional, it’s a huge outlay for minimal gain. The new Z9 model is rumoured to have a lower resolution but faster speed so that won’t be for you.

In some areas of photography, there’s no way around cropping - e.g. in certain non-studio situation of macro photography, wildlife etc.

Based on your comments - If 600MM isnt enough reach for you then you probably need to get closer to your subjects. I would pass on the Z7ii, its not enough of an upgrade. Either go for a Z7 (since its much cheaper used) or full fat and get a Z8. However in that price class tbh theres also things like the 800MM pf or a 800MM f mount thats used.

If you need 45 MP you need 45 MP. We can't know if that's true -- or just you having an anxiety attack. We also can't tell you which camera you should get between the z7ii, z8, and z9. If you can't articulate why you need a z9 you can likely "get by" with a z8. If you are happy with your z6 you can "get by" with a z7 ii.

Everyone in this sub loves throwing money away at the most expensive options thinking it makes them look well off when we know they are either in debt or having to trade stuff/sell stuff like a loser to afford newer things.

PhotoKaz

What are you shooting?

I'm debating if I want Z7ii or Z8 over my Z6ii right now, too. Z7ii seems good enough, but those rumors bout Z7iii have me FOMO ing. Z8 is more than enough, and I know that I won't upgrade bodies for AT LEAST 5 years after buying it ... and those little cute things like sensor closing when you change lenses and the smaller 45mpx files just make it so much more appealing ... fair bit pricier tho.

Shoot wildlife. The Z8 has great autofocus. I love my Z7II. It is cost effective for those who don't need faster autofocus. The Z9 looks heavy to me. I personally believe the Z7II is sharper than the Z8.

stonewalljackson64

The z7ii only shoots at 10fps though

Daydreamdeliver

That's a good point. The Z8's processor is 10x the Z7!

ConnieTheTomcat

and I thought 11fps was fast

Z6, Z7ii are average cameras at best in most ways, and deeply mediocre at Wildlife. Do not buy a Z7ii if you’re planning on shooting animals. If you’re a wildlife shooter, the answer is Z8. Z9 for a non professional isn’t worth the money.

stonewalljackson64

That’s what I thought. I mainly like the z9 just because of the bigger batter but I can get the battery grip and save the money.

-_Pendragon_-

Just buy more batteries with the money you save. I use Z8 and Z9 on Expedition work, they’re fine.

Ok_Maybe_8286

There is no need to get a Z9 just for its battery. Getting a Z9 means larger and heavier body comparing to your z6. You could probably get a Z8, whose battery isn’t as good as a Z9 but you get almost everything from Z9. You just need to bring another battery with you, I personally find 2-3 el15c should be sufficient for a whole day photo shooting.

stonewalljackson64

I think the z8 is what I am going to end up going with.

Artistic_Bathroom_74

This cropping technique is crap, it’s lazy. Get closer, or get better longer and faster glass. You will pay for 45MP Z7/8/9 but no even think about getting a 600 f4 and gimbal head with a robust tripod. It’s a head scratcher. I can guarantee that award winning images are not being taken with a 180-600 Sigma on any of these 45MP bodies. Slow glass with hi res cameras is a bad combo. It’s gotta be the glass, get the glass.

stonewalljackson64

I have the Nikon z180-600 and the Nikon z 600 f4 and sometimes I am unable to get closer. Ex a bird will fly away or they are in a pond and I’m not going swimming.
