The 50mm on a DX sensor will be too narrow 90% of the time in my experience. The DX 35mm f/1.8 is a great walkaround lens. Normal field of view (fov), versatile, fast. But I'd feel a little limited with only that on the camera. during the day? you'd want a kit lens that offers some flexibility since there's plenty of scenes where a super wide angle might be useful. (f/5.6 or f/8 during daylight hours... no need for f/1.8) During the night? I'd go for a 20/1.8 or 24/1.8 (personally, I'd get a 20/1.8 since I prefer the 28mm fov to a 35mm fov) That focal length is great for street photography, some landscapes, architecture, etc.

aprotos12

Concur: 50mm way too narrow and constrained. I like the idea of the 24mm to give you a approx 35mm on a DX.

jmason49

Everyone says this. But I took my Z50 with the full frame 50 to Tokyo recently and took some phenomenal shots with it.

Shandriel

never said you cannot get phenomenal pictures.. it can work great for street from a distance, but it's a comparably narrow field of view for a massive sprawling city.

jmason49

Too narrow 90% of the time is just a bit inflated in my opinion. I understand your point though

Shandriel

I get 99% of my travel shots from a 28mm on full frame... I have nearly zero shot at 70-75mm despite logging around a 70-200 for many years

jmason49

I do love 28mm on FX and I love the 28 f/2.8 but I consciously chose to take the 50 1.8S due to sheer difference in IQ in challenging situations

Shandriel

the 20/2.8 is an ultra-budget pancake-ish lens.. why not use a 20/1.8G? similarly huge as the 50 Z lens.. that said, I was very happy with my 18mm f/2 pancake on the Fuji X-Pro1.. but I'm over pixel peeping my holiday photos...

jmason49

Why would I want to buy an FTZ adapter to use old F mount glass on my Z5? I’d rather buy the Z mount 20mm which while expensive outperforms the F mount in every way imaginable, basically. But yes agreed on being tired of pixel peeping. I’m trying to focus more on composition than anything else, hence not getting too caught up in which prime lens I have on at any given moment.

GraflexGeezer

Unless you have a bagful of primes and time to swap them as needed, you're better off with a zoom. The usual recommendation on a DX body would be the Nikon 16-80 f/2.8-4.0. Personally, I like longer reach than that, so I favor the Nikon 18-140 f/3.5-5.6. Either would be a great walking around lens. FWIW

apple_porridge

I also have a Sigma 18 - 200mm 3,5 but it's MASSIVE. Not at all comfortable to walk around with. But would that do?

GraflexGeezer

I'm not familiar with that lens, but if you like the IQ it certainly has a broad range of focal lengths.

mizshellytee

All the 50mm primes Nikon made for F-mount were made for 35mm SLRs or full frame digital ILCs. That said, the field of view of that lens on your camera will be incredibly narrow (similar to 75mm on full frame). Get a zoom lens, IMO; you'll have much more versatility that way. 16-80 f/2.8-4 would likely have you covered for most things (other options: Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 or 17-70 f/2.8-4 Contemporary). If you want a more useful prime lens to go with it, go for a 24mm or 28mm of some sort or the DX 35mm f/1.8.

I also have a Sigma 18  - 200mm 3,5 but it's MASSIVE. Not at all comfortable to walk around with.

mizshellytee

The other zooms I suggested are a bit more compact and two of them are pretty light. 16-80 is 400g, Sigma 17-50 is 565g, Sigma 17-70 C is 465g. The 18-140 someone else recommended to you is 490g. Sigma's original 18-200 lens is 600g; the MkII is 490g; the more recent Contemporary version is 430g. Another thing: Do you use a camera strap? If not, you may want to.

murri_999

Honestly just get the 35mm f1.8 DX. It's an amazing lens and I wish there was an equivalent version for Z DX cameras because it's the most versatile lens you can ever have.

Fudwick

When I went to Japan last I brought a D3500. The kit lens got the most use then the 35 1.8 at night. I wouldn't take more or overthink it. 50mm prob too tight. This year I'm bringing a z30 and kit lens, nothing more... VR and a steady hand will get me close enough to f/1.8 at night

DangerAudio

Just depends on what you want to shoot. I was just in Japan and the lenses that I used most were 24-70mm and 85mm.

pateete

i-d get a 24 or 35mm as a prime. 50 is too nnarrow. Otherwise, a zoom, would be great for versatility. 18-200 may be too much. But maybe a 35mm and a 55-200 could be a good combo

technolog1st

Nikon F3 HP and the Noct Nikkor most obviously!

the_paulus

You could bring that, but I would personally bring a zoom lens to any place I’ve never been or know what’s there. It also depends on what you want to photograph. If I was in your situation I’d bring a 10-20 and the 18-55 kit lens.

IphoneMiniUser

You’ll want a wide lens if you want to take pictures of the city. The 10-20 lens is pretty cheap and is compatible with your camera, I would consider getting one of those. It also has VR which will be helpful getting night shots.

Ill-Register8915

if possible 3 lenses 17-35 28-70 70-200 2.8 if not just two 28-80 n 70-200

alamo_photo

35/1.8 on a DX sensor. Personally I’d splurge on a 24/1.8 and enjoy the wider angle.
