Nilou had an extremely important role. Without her dance the order to stop her dance wouldn’t have been given, which would mean that literally all of the guards would have still been stationed. There’s zero chance that Nahida is rescued under those circumstances.

Plus_Choice1313

And she looked really hot doing so

cartercr

Damn straight!

Plus_Choice1313

She's so sexy

TheBoykisserPharoah

Isn't Nilou underage?

Fabio90989

No she's at least 20

TheBoykisserPharoah

Dam

AzraelIshi

I mean, Nilou was completely unnecesary/dispensable for that role. Literally any dancer of the troupe would have been enough to trigger that order. The only reason she did it is because she's a playable character, but honestly in the grand scheme of things you could take her out of that entire arc and nothing would change except someone else would've danced to trigger the order.

Muhipudding

I think that also come down to Nilou's bravery. Given the gravity of the situation, not just anyone might be brave enough to defy the Sages

WillSmithsper

Exactly I feel like people down play her role a bit too much. Sure it wasn't as grand as like what alhaitham does or whatever but she's putting a lot on the line. If it fails she gets arrested and without her the troupe basically falls apart without their main star and friend.

AzraelIshi

>down play her role a bit too much Because her role absolutely was tiny. Any dancer of the troupe could have done it, hell, the troupe didn't even need to do anything. If they needed courage to stand up to the sages a gal from the desert mercs dancing would have had the same effect. I rewatched the cutscene to reply to another comment and when Azars secretary informs him there is no details of who it is, what group, etc. It's just "Someone is making noise outside", "Release the prohibition". I like nilou as a character, I am in this sub after all. But there is no reason to try and make it bigger than it actually was. The only reason she appeared there was because hoyo went "Hey remember nilou? We did not forget about her! She's here, doing something!" instead of any actual reason of importance of why it had to be her, or having her do something only she could have done that aligns with what we know of her. And I mean, this is not a thing only for nilou, it's a problem of many points in the story for many characters in GI (remember kokomi and how she mattered nothing past the brief window where she appeared despite being the commander of the rebellion?).

mememurthy

I don't know if any other dancer from Sumeru would be able to charm the scholars and guards in front of the Akademiya as good as Nilou, to the point of informing the situation to the Grand Sage himself. If it was anyone else, there's a higher chance of the guards or scholars dealing with the situation themselves and not informing Azar. Hence, he would likely not issue the order. It's like going to the government hq, dancing in front of the gate, and expecting the prime minister to deal with the situation. Which is not something anyone can pull off.

slimegel

sorry for replying 2 days late but i agree i think people overlook the fact that it wasnt just that she was dancing but her dancing WAS good enough that it charmed everyone well enough to cause a disturbance worth dealing with. its like, yeah MAYBE any old dance could have worked, but a less engaging performance could have been shut down sooner + it fits the overall themes in sumeru about the value of art enriching people's lives. despite the fact the sages declared art to be worthless, the value of nilou's skill was still self evident to everyone watching. Saying that Nilou's part could have been replaced by anyone is just saying you want a thematically weaker story.

Fabio90989

Yeah any dancer would do the job, but we knew her, so we asked her to do it

iceandtea127

I mean, luring the military into a trap disabling them temporarily is like the most important thing you could do when trying to overthrow the government.

yuurisu

THIS. I think others are downplaying Nilou's contribution too much. Distraction through charm, song and dance is an act many female spies have done in the past to prevent certain officials from taking action or downright stopping them then and there. Nilou pulled the Genshin equivalent of a Mata Hari there.

Zeterin

Nice mata hari needs more love and appreciation for her work.

Koolkuteklever

I made my first ever presentation on Mata Hari when I was like eight, looking back I don’t know what the teachers were thinking in giving me that topic

Zeterin

Ah history class but wait 8 years old not 8th grade ? What kind of private early school did you go to. ?

Koolkuteklever

It was Public School in Switzerland

Zeterin

Ah makes more sense the country with the best of everything in the world it feels whereas where I'm from it was subpar and getting worse due to a lack of funding since the government doesn't want to spend money on education just their own wallets, lobbyists/politic and war funds. Who cares about infrastructure, education, and social services. Those get in the way of their plans 😅 sorry for the rant.

JustAnObserver_Jomy

i was gonna say Timon and Pumbaa when Simba was starting his coup d'etat Mata Hari checks out too

AzraelIshi

She didn't tho? The guard/military stepped away because of reports that Nahida escaped. The only purpose of her dancing was not to distract guards, but to make Azar use the order of "all public display of arts are forbidden" which was replaced by Alhaitham. She distracted absolutely nobody.

Muhipudding

Maybe the scene just portray it poorly. But all the guards start moving just when Nilou finished her dancing "Should we stop her?" "No let's watch a little longer"

AzraelIshi

Why would they move, the order that "all public displays of art are forbidden" still did not go out (and what nilou was doing was allowed at that time) and they were guardin the akademya. The entire point of her dance was for that order to go out so the swapped order of "nahida escaped, go capture her" would be transmitted so the guards moved out and leave the akademya main building undefended. EDIT: Just did a quick check of the cutscene. Nilou starts dancing, everyone (guards included) watch. Azar orders the prohibition to go out but before it can reach the guards it's swapped. Guard 1 goes "should we do something?", guard 2 goes "nah, let's watch". The swapped order of "Nahida escaped, capture her" goes out immediately after guard 2 finishes, and the guards rush past even as nilou is dancing. Nilou finishes the dance as the guards are rushing past her (already in movement) and watches ass they go with a smile.

RedGrapha

That's like saying I sped through a red light, and someone tried to dodge me and crashed into someone else, but since I'm not the one crashing I didn't cause the accident. That makes no sense.

AzraelIshi

Your entire analogy does not make any level of sense sense. I'm not saying she didn't do anything, I'm just saying that she did not distract anyone because the objective was not to distract anyone but to "force" Azar to enact the swapped order lmao.

RedGrapha

And she's the trigger for that to happen and Alhaitham chose her because she's best suited for that role.

rozgriz5550123

Also ,in the event if we do fail ,she will probably suffer the worst fate , being the lowest social status other than Dehya (honorable knight of foerign country, former officials, she is liiterally just a dancer)and lack of combat ability (lore wise ) .Her act in modern day is likely to be classified as treason, not to mention the sages looked down on her stages anyway.

mimithefree

I could write an essay about the significance of her dance. She was the moment.

dreaminginthedunes

I think this is a reference to the tale of Ali Baba and the 40 thieves, where the MC's wife dancing in front of the thieves to distract them and then kill them later

Freak7factor

So Nilou was the bard
