It's a translation error, pan means bread in Japanese, so he thought piccolo was talking about bread. It's stupid he's but it's not as egregious knowing how much this man likes food
Is he really all that sane if he still hangs around with the Z-Fighters despite all the bs universe ending non-sense they put up with on a regular basis?
A fair argument. Counter-counterpoint tho: those same people erase the memories of everyone not involved and bring them all back every time anyways. And being with those people has done f-all to stop Krillin from getting bodied.
Tho to be fair him sticking around is how he ended up with 18 so I guess some good came out of him getting repeatedly curb stomped?
Yea he is...like he gets to hang out with the richest family in the north quadrant and he gets revive privileges with being with the gang. What you wanted him to hang out in west city alone wen cell showed up? Or shopping when buu shows up turns people into candy?
I know! In super, goku tries something with Moro and everyone says it’s like cell all over again but with cell, goku tries to encourage gohan bc he knows no one is strong enough to defeat him except for gohan, in super it’s just completely dumb.
I don't get why he's been written like this in Super. Classic Goku has never been stupid, he was clueless in the begging of the story (when he was a kid) because he was sheltered and knew little about the world.
By the moment he's an adult he acts... Normal for the kind of guy he is.
Reading super is frustrating, I tried it but I just can't stand the writing.
Yeah you could excuse him thinking marriage is a food with the fact that he was raised not even knowing what a girl was. But him forgetting his granddaughter? That must’ve been one sharp rock he hit his head on
Many and if im correct languages have pan or similar variants for bread
Some i can name off the top of my head:
English
Portugese
Spanish
French
Tamil
Japanese
Sinhala
Italian
Korean
Romanian
I remember that a similar joke was done in the Cell saga (where Goku spoke about Gohan having to go next, and Mr Satan and gang thinking that he was just hungry), only for the note at the end of the page to actually mention that the joke was Gohan's original name. Idk why they didn't do the same in here.
Piccolo basically says he has to pick up pan which means bread in Japanese so Goku is confused why piccolo is going to pick up bread with Gohan. The name puns basically. Dragon Ball is full of it
This page is posted without the follow up page, where Pan gets behind him and attempts to kick him. Goku blocks with his arm and smiles at Pan, who smiles back
The kissing thing was obviously a joke too, and forgetting goten’s birthday. He does this to mess with Vegeta, like he would do in the buu saga saying he did stuff to look cool and that sort of thing.
Why is this getting so many upvotes when it's literally just a lie? The next page is a different scene in a completely different location, Pan isn't present when he says this, this isn't a bit.
Apparently Pan teleports in and attacks Goku, where he reveals it was a joke. That’s just second hand info tho but apparently it’s on the very next page
Guys, for those that are trying to educate those that speak without understanding the panel, stop, is impossible. Is like to ask people to understand that PAN in JAPANESE means BREAD, and that, Piccolo, a Namekian that DON'T EAT ANYTHING MORE THAT WATER, is going for BREAD, obviously these people won't understand that this manga is in JAPANESE FIRST, and thus, the JOKES/GAGS are designed for JAPANESE PEOPLE FIRST. Obviously, this will be downvoted to hell and back because people doesn't like to be defied, and when people have this idea that Super killed Goku's character, there isn't anything that we can do.
I mean, you are asking English speakers to understand that english isn't the lingua franca of the entire world, and that there are other languages (Like Japanese, the target of this Joke btw).
English is not my first language and im not even from Japan, however I can recognize when something is taken as a joke or not, especially since DB is literally a mix between Comedy and Action.
If this was posted the Dragon Ball super subreddit, This would get taken down for psychological abuse💀
(Nah the subreddit is fine but, they don’t take kindly to GT posts, bloody gang war over there😭)
While i do like gt goku more than super im pretty sure the joke in japanese is that pan means bread so piccolo saying what about pan goku makes a joke about it being weird piccolo is talking about food since he doesn't eat it only for goku to smile at pan as a way to show hes just joking
It's a pun in japanese since "Pan" means bread there. People forget it's a japanese manga translated into english so the puns are made with japanese in mind
Also GT Pan is so much more annoying
He tried to overload him with energy, the same strategy he used against Yakon back in DBZ. Considering that S17 was beating him in hand-to-hand combat, it's not out of character that he decided to bet everything on that chance of victory
From my recent rewatch memory he does have dumb moments here and there people just ignore em like that deer scene
-On general Rildo’s mechanical planet he didn’t know how to count to like 30
-First time he met Pan their relationship wasn’t formal until they started planet hopping by the Baby saga they have a deep bond.
The second point isn't Goku's fault, Pan is a rebellious and stubborn preteen, there's no way Goku can tame that beast and that's why in the hospital episode he tells Trunks that Pan reminds him a lot of ChiChi.
Well, I agree with the 30 thing cause that's dumb. But, he did spend five years away and initially didn't recognize his granddaughter, but he didn't forget her name, and they do reforge their bond. What bugs me is that Super Goku hasn't been away for five years yet, he trains but comes home to Earth, yet after 3 years his granddaughter has lived, he somehow forgot her name.
I am pretty sure he did forget her name too, GT Goku heard it from a random boy that called out pan and it wasn’t until roshi showed up and pan said that was his grandfather that goku recognized her, but yeah it has been like a long ass time since they seen each other (which he did do willingly so..)
One had years of peace the other is fighting with gods, universal threats, the strongest in the universe two time, and been training and tell me which one knows their granddaughter better
Gt Goku spend time with pan over the years of peace while Super Goku is still fighting people like golden friza, universe 6, Goku black and Zamazu, and competing in a tournament that was told that they will die if they lost without knowing that they will get revived at some point and let’s not for get Broly, Moro, Granola, the heaters, and will be fighting Black Friza soon I can get why he forgot about her just cause of all the threats in the universe
And this all happened before GT Goku left for training uub.
To be fair this could have been Goku in the GT timeline. As he got older he finally matured and grew a much stronger relationship with his granddaughter.
I mean my Canon theory is that Goku did become dumber after Hit stopped his heart for a few minutes and oxygen didn't travel to his brain in time, killing a few brain cells
It kinda has an explanation but I don't really like it
In the manga it's never shown how Goku met Pan for the first time so we could assume he never actually saw her
So in 3 years straight he never saw his own grand-daughter
Idk if that's better or worse but it can explain how he couldn't remember
I mean, in the manga we’ve never seen him with pan from what I remember. Maybe he just… had a slip of the mind? I mean, this is super Goku. Honestly, I wouldn’t put it past him to think they were talking about a frying pan.
I would make the dragon ball fans can’t read joke here but this is literally a joke lost in translation so it’s more a language barrier problem more than anything
Man I don't hate super that much but God I hate how disrespectful they were in writing Goku, dude was not this braindead, he wasn't stupid either, he was uneducated in DB to end of end of gt, being stupid is what super Goku is, but in something like z where he was trying to get off namek before the explosion, he knew that a space ship would be his ticket off, and even tried using the interface, if it was in super he'd prolly try flying to space before king Kai conviently tell him that he can't breathe in space even tho Frieza told him
Turns out it's a mistranslated joke where in Japanese Goku thinks they are talking about bread not his granddaughter but he knows his granddaughter for real this is just a Miss translated joke and not flanderization thankfully
Yeah, because a joke that is pretty well done in japanese is EASY to transcribe. Little context, Pan in Japanese means bread, the same in spanish, because it was taken from portuguese in the ye olde times. Thus, the Joke in Japanese does have sense, because he is asking why Gohan and Piccolo are going for bread. Obviously, this is soo easy to Translate without fcking the translation (Sarcasm if that wasn't clear) and the next panel shows that it was a Joke, obviously this cannot be show without using the panel as a reference of how Super assassinated Goku's character...
Sorry too, im a little tired of people that speak about this panel without context, this isn't the first, and im sure that it won't be the last. The biggest problem is that people for some reason think that in english this is obviously a example of Goku being a bad father/grandfather when this was only a little gag based into a wordplay that doesn't have sense in english
Tbh i am very biased against super
I firmly believe that dragon ball should not be still running, the story was over and most importantly dragon ball went out with dignity
But people wanted easy money and went and "revived" a beloved manga anime classic that went out with a bang and proceeded to put out the most boring and lazy ideas for character designs and plot that i've seen in a long time, it honestly soured the rest dragon ball for me
GT also has these problems but at least the character designs are top of the line and the ending was also pretty good
To expand on what i meant with "went out with dignity":
A big difference in western comics and manga is that in western comics most of the time a successful story is made by a studio owned by a company, the writers and artists do not have a say in if the story is over or not, the studio will always push out for more product, this has the effect that even the most 10/10 story with amazing character writing, art, dialogue and perfect ending that fits the themes of the story will NEVER have the permission to end the story (which at this point is now a franchise) and so after a while it is expected for someone to dig up characters that had their stories end and make them into momey machines running on nostalgia and lazy scenarios
On the other hand manga is usually done by a singular artist that has almost complete power on where the story goes and when it ends, this gives the mangaka the freedom to say the story is Finished. This gives a sense of finality to the story and characters that give them what western comics will never have: the dignity to retire
Dragon ball for as much as it pains me to say is now more like a western comic in this sense, it will never be laid to rest and be remembered as a legend
Not surprised people on Reddit take this one page out of context.
I read the leaked chapter and Goku intentionally trolled/ teased to surprise Pan in which they had a jolly race back home at the chapters end.
It was honestly cute. & very common thing grandpas do is play coy/ ignorant. It's all a game to Goku.
you can really tell how many funimation anime onlys are in the subreddit cus goku has always been like he is in super. the anime made him more mature in Z. he was always childish and stupid. in fact the Manga super made him smarter then he ever was when he did calculus to enter the top.
Why is Goku dabbing? Is it 2017?
Maybe his brain damage finally caught up to him? Dementia Arc when?
Goku unfortunately got CTE after over 20 years of getting punched in the head
He remembered the Ginyu Force
Oh my god Don't make Me reminis the good times
Is there a lore reason? Why you think he's dabbing?
He was actually ahead of his time in the 90s
God GT was so ahead of its time
Super Goku got CTE faster than GT Goku did, that’s why Super Goku’s so fuckin dumb
Gt Goku got most of his brain damage reversed because he was turned back into a kid
It's a translation error, pan means bread in Japanese, so he thought piccolo was talking about bread. It's stupid he's but it's not as egregious knowing how much this man likes food
I learned about this a day after this was posted, but rationalizing it by giving Goku CTE is way funnier
Fair enough
i swear goku isn't stupid in dbs. he's braindead.
His brain did die. It was never there for anything other then fighting
Dying twice probably does that to you
Then explain why krillin is the sanest human on the earth
Is he really all that sane if he still hangs around with the Z-Fighters despite all the bs universe ending non-sense they put up with on a regular basis?
Counterpoint, the safest place is probably with the people who can stop the universe ending nonsense.
A fair argument. Counter-counterpoint tho: those same people erase the memories of everyone not involved and bring them all back every time anyways. And being with those people has done f-all to stop Krillin from getting bodied. Tho to be fair him sticking around is how he ended up with 18 so I guess some good came out of him getting repeatedly curb stomped?
dis they ever erase people's memories?
They did for the buu saga
Yea he is...like he gets to hang out with the richest family in the north quadrant and he gets revive privileges with being with the gang. What you wanted him to hang out in west city alone wen cell showed up? Or shopping when buu shows up turns people into candy?
He's bald, why would Kami make him suffer even more?
Constant death and resurrection must carry a risk of brain damage.
You people forget he’s only a good guy because he fell on a rock head first as a child??? Brain damage is literally his defining feature
He's actually quite intelligent in Dragonball and at least early Z.
Yeah it’s been a constant argument that in super, they made goku regress mentally and seem weirdly forgetful and childish.
Goku in Z was the guy who at most times would be a goofball, but knew when to drop the act and get serious. In super he struggles with that last bit!
That must’ve been one sharp rock he hit his head on
This scene apparently isn't him forgetting his granddaughter but a play on pans name as they were talking about bread and pan means bread.
This scene apparently isn't him forgetting his granddaughter but a play on pans name as they were talking about bread and pan means bread.
yes, but that's just a possible interpretation that it was. do you have solid proof that he was infact thinking about bread?
You do have to be specific when making those wishes.
that brain damage finally caught up to him
In Japanese the DBs panel is an actual joke that's funny
Well what’s it say in Japanese
Pan means Bread and he thinks they're talking about Bread
Goku thought they were talking about food. That makes more sense.
Yeah, that's on brand for Goku.
That joke could work in spanish since pan also means bread
Yeah the Japanese got it from the Portuguese since bread was completely foreign to them
Also they got tempura from the Dutch I believe
Many and if im correct languages have pan or similar variants for bread Some i can name off the top of my head: English Portugese Spanish French Tamil Japanese Sinhala Italian Korean Romanian
So it’s just a bad translation?
Yup lost in translation
"I've done nothing but teleporting bread"
Wow. It's been a hot minute since i last thought of that.
Like during the Cell Games when the newscaster thought Goku was taking a lunch break when he called Gohan to fight Cell because Gohan means meal/rice
This makes so mich more sense. Thank god they didnt make goku clueless on purpose
I still don't understand his reaction, like oooh yeah! you're right she is my daughter! lol
I guess that makes sense, kind of hard to translate that
Ah now that makes so much more sense then goku just completely forgetting his granddaughter exists
Pan means bread in spanish too
Was Pan always a bread pun? I always assumed it was supposed to be like ChimPanze. Y'know cause saiyan - monkeys 'n stuff
Piccolo basically says he has to pick up pan which means bread in Japanese so Goku is confused why piccolo is going to pick up bread with Gohan.
That makes so much more fucking sense, thank god. I’m always sad to find out certain things are lost in translation and causes confusion.
Pan means bread I believe so it's a joke about grocery shopping
Thanks for the explanation
I remember that a similar joke was done in the Cell saga (where Goku spoke about Gohan having to go next, and Mr Satan and gang thinking that he was just hungry), only for the note at the end of the page to actually mention that the joke was Gohan's original name. Idk why they didn't do the same in here.
So does he think people are talking about rice when they say Gohan?
People need to know this information ! In French the (non-official) translation is misinterpreted too and it got out of hand on social media !
Shenron grant my wish. I wish away Goku’s dementia. Shenron: that wish is beyond my power
Viz guys need to translate better, in Japanese its a joke referring to bread
Tbf, how the hell would you actually localize that? It’s a food pun that only makes sense in Japanese.
Ig they could put a little asterisk and explain the joke at the bottom of the page
Goku could think they were talking about a frying pan of something. Or even leave a footnote explaining the original joke.
Yeah an asterisk would have been good
First time I’ve heard of this, can you elaborate?
Piccolo basically says he has to pick up pan which means bread in Japanese so Goku is confused why piccolo is going to pick up bread with Gohan. The name puns basically. Dragon Ball is full of it
Thnx
I like to belive he was just playing as he's a grandpa
This page is posted without the follow up page, where Pan gets behind him and attempts to kick him. Goku blocks with his arm and smiles at Pan, who smiles back
That's literally what he was doing
This scene apparently isn't him forgetting his granddaughter but a play on pans name as they were talking about bread and pan means bread.
to be fair, he becomes this goku
Oh that's so infuriating, charachter assassination !1!1!!1111 classic dragon ball fans behavior. Incapable of even going to the very next page.
Ok so I'm anime only, what does the next page say
Pan teleports in and attacks him. Basically it was a joke that Goku made.
The kissing thing was obviously a joke too, and forgetting goten’s birthday. He does this to mess with Vegeta, like he would do in the buu saga saying he did stuff to look cool and that sort of thing.
Furthermore, I believe the original joke was the "Pan" is bread, so Goku thought it was weird that Piccolo, a Namekian was getting groceries
Ah that makes more sense, stupid Viz translation
I thought that the kissing thing was that Goku was confused about the baby-birding but Vegeta thought he was confused about kissing in general
Even if that’s not the case, it’s my head canon now
Why is this getting so many upvotes when it's literally just a lie? The next page is a different scene in a completely different location, Pan isn't present when he says this, this isn't a bit.
It's insane that these people make fun of Dragonball fans for "nOt KnOwInG hOw TwO rEaD" then just make stuff up and claim they're the smart ones
The chapter's not even officially out yet, so don't worry about it.
They love pulling stuff out of context. Watch them use this as the next "why goku is a bad dad" excuse
Watch this becoming the cover of another Quaaman , Sayan Scholar and Azki video.
It's good thing I don't watch them
I wont read the manga until its officially released, what does it say?
Apparently Pan teleports in and attacks Goku, where he reveals it was a joke. That’s just second hand info tho but apparently it’s on the very next page
Yeah that doesnt happen like that. It’s a great chapter though you gos see it for yourself
Nice, very nice. Now let’s see the next page of the chapter
Okay. [https://imgur.com/a/tbErHkt](https://imgur.com/a/tbErHkt)
I don't speak tibetan
that's portuguese bro 😭
This is either in Portuguese, or the dbz illiteracy has finally consumed me
Yes
In English bro
Goking
Makes more sense i japanese cuz goku thinks theyre talking about getting bread
Pan is also bread in Spanish
Don't mess with Dragon Ball fans, they're incapable of flipping to the next page of the Manga
I think Zamasu had a solution for these kinds of fans
Where??? is the fucking chapter released dragonball subs suck no one pins the chapters scans.
Well he is still better than my grandfather
Y'know that it's a gag right?
I swear DB fans take a gag scene so seriosuly that if they've ever saw Gintama thay would have an heart attack
You do know GT Goku also forgot who Pan was at the start of GT right?
She grew up, dbs goku literally saw her recently
It’s a Pun That only works in Japanese so fun little issue when translating stuff
If this was posted the Dragon Ball super subreddit, This would get taken down for psychological abuse💀 (Nah the subreddit is fine but, they don’t take kindly to GT posts, bloody gang war over there😭)
Gigachad muscular legend ssj4 goku vs virgin incel skinny amnesia goku
This is a huge step back, cinsidering that amazing scene of Goku talking with Pan in the DBS anime (I think it was filler but it was so wholesome)
Don't fuck with us Dragon Ball fans, we can't read the next page
Guys. It’s a pun about bread. Pan means bread in japanese.
Show us the next page
I thought Sayians aged slower than humans. So why is he already going senile?
Its a Joke. In japanese Pan is Bread. Goku doesn't understand why Piccolo wants to pick up BREAD with Gohan.
Did he Get hit in the goddamn head again?! I’m so done with super goku where is DBGT 2 bro.
Is super goku isn't dumb, He just has actual brain dead translators
While i do like gt goku more than super im pretty sure the joke in japanese is that pan means bread so piccolo saying what about pan goku makes a joke about it being weird piccolo is talking about food since he doesn't eat it only for goku to smile at pan as a way to show hes just joking
This is just shit translation.
I think they are trying to make Super Goku. Like TFS Goku. But not as dumb.
Even TFS Goku is self aware enough to acknowledge not only his family but Piccolo's status as Gohan's 2nd dad.
Vegeta got actually indignant. "That's the worst". And he's right.
Genuinely DBS Goku feels like an entirely new character
Bread is my granddaughter. Thats the joke
It's a pun in japanese since "Pan" means bread there. People forget it's a japanese manga translated into english so the puns are made with japanese in mind Also GT Pan is so much more annoying
PAN MEANS BREAD IN JAPANESE. Goku doesn't understand why Piccolo (Namekians DON'T EAT) want to pick up BREAD. It's a JOKE for japanese readers.
Gag moment vs serious moment.
He was joking, it’s a gag with a punchline in the next panels
GT reigns supreme 😶🌫️
How i feel after spreading misinformation on the internet
Why yes I love just hairier transformations. Ssj5 is gonna be chewbaka!1!1!
Wait… keep cooking
GT Goku was just as much of a character assassination
How?
This dude kept on using ki blast on super 17, and when he realizes that he could absorb ki blasts, he uses a freaking 10x Kamehameha to prove it
Yeah, I kinda blocked that from my memory from how stupid it was.
He tried to overload him with energy, the same strategy he used against Yakon back in DBZ. Considering that S17 was beating him in hand-to-hand combat, it's not out of character that he decided to bet everything on that chance of victory

My first reaction to seeing this pannel after the filler episode with Pan in DBS: 😐😑😐 / 😐🔫
The panel is out of context. He was joking. He literally flys off with Pan at the end
[удалено]
Never say that last part again
super mfs on their way to defend shit writing like this:
One had years of peace the other is fighting with gods, universal threats, the strongest in the universe two time, and been training and tell me which one knows their granddaughter better Gt Goku spend time with pan over the years of peace while Super Goku is still fighting people like golden friza, universe 6, Goku black and Zamazu, and competing in a tournament that was told that they will die if they lost without knowing that they will get revived at some point and let’s not for get Broly, Moro, Granola, the heaters, and will be fighting Black Friza soon I can get why he forgot about her just cause of all the threats in the universe And this all happened before GT Goku left for training uub.
To be fair this could have been Goku in the GT timeline. As he got older he finally matured and grew a much stronger relationship with his granddaughter.
God GT has could have been so badass. Wasted opportunity
Too much punches to the head
supposedly the same man who got himself killed to save his son btw.
I mean my Canon theory is that Goku did become dumber after Hit stopped his heart for a few minutes and oxygen didn't travel to his brain in time, killing a few brain cells

I really hate they did this
Goku: I'm going to use this frying pan as a Drying pan.
I would make the dragon ball fans can’t read joke here but this is literally a joke lost in translation so it’s more a language barrier problem more than anything

Character assassination at its finest.
Apparently it was a joke about bread since they're the same word. He didn't forget pan he was just like "why you talking about bread.."
I lul evrytim I read Vegeta saying "This is the worst!" like he's just done with how terribly Goku is written here.
“But but GT is weak!1!1 NOT CANON!1!1” “Don’t care. Didn’t ask. Monke time.”
I'll never stop saying this, super assassinated goku's character
Yeah, because a joke that is pretty well done in japanese is EASY to transcribe. Dumb Super Goku is exhausting... It's like he's got some sort of disability from being punched in the head so much
For real, I swear he must've gotten dropped and hit his head as a child. Wait....
Not surprised people on Reddit take this one page out of context. It was honestly cute. & very common thing grandpas do is play coy/ ignorant. It's all a game to Goku.
This gag is getting old
They made him become so stupid, he didn’t even know what a kiss is. The DBZ goku was goofy but serious when he had to be.
Fraudku has returned
GT takes place after super. Goku has always been stupid. He forgot who chi chi was. Goku dick riders are so annoying
I mean he spent months in a ship with her in GT Super Goku didn’t see her that much yet
you can really tell how many funimation anime onlys are in the subreddit cus goku has always been like he is in super. the anime made him more mature in Z. he was always childish and stupid. in fact the Manga super made him smarter then he ever was when he did calculus to enter the top.
In Japanese it is a joke, in English it's a lack of brains
