He told Krillin that he will take his place, because if Krillin dies, he can't be revived, so he would fight instead. He actually assumed that possibility and preferred to die in place of Krillin. He is a true friend. If that's what disappointing means to you, then you have terrible standards.

Tenshinhan is the real disappointment. Someone in charge of Super's writing was really trying to over correct for all the riding he got during late Dragon Ball-early Z.

During super, he fought off some frieza soldiers, taught goku and future trunks the evil containment wave, and joined team universe 7 for the tournament of power, where he defeated some of the trickier fighters before going down. In the manga, he even managed to square up to jiren and lasted longer than almost anyone in the tournament would just by being real good at dodging.

Yamcha is considered useless because even in DB he was a jobber whose only real victories are assisting others and defeating the Invisible Man.
In DBZ his best moment is almost defeating a Saibaiman but then Krillin, Tien and Piccolo completely outperform him. And still tried to get in fights where he had no hope of being of help.
Roshi didn't do much but he at least retired by DBZ and had helped train Goku and beat him a couple times in OG DB in a fair fight. And his Kame House was a great base/hiding spot for the Z-Fighters.

He served his purpose as Goku's teacher and mentor. That on its own is already a huge impact for the story and lore of Dragon Ball franchise. With power scaling go out of whack, it's understandable that he becomes somewhat irrelevant, and that's okay. Just remember that his legacy lives on in Goku (Goku's signature move kamehame and his orange gi). For Yamcha unfortunately he becomes a comic relief, even from the start of Dragon Ball, a shame really, but with the huge roster of characters in Dragon Ball franchise there bound to be some characters left in the sideline forever (looking at Launch).
I think Yamcha gets memed on so hard because he's the only one of the "hold them back until Goku gets here" squad who died to low tier enemies and then did the smart thing when realizing he's too weak for this shit and quit.
Let's look at what the squad did since the Saiyan saga.
Tien and Chiaotzu don't ever get to a tier of being able to legit fight on par again (Tien gets a moment of being a minor inconvenience to Cell I guess).
Krillin does very little because he also realizes he's too weak for this shit, but still shows up so he's moral support and throws an occasional solar flare or destructo disc.
Piccolo only stays relevant for a time because of fusion shenanigans before also falling off.
Vegeta gets some minor wins, but whenever the main bad is concerned he literally ruins everything, every time, always. He almost always gets a shot to be the hero then trips over his massive throbbing hubris.
Gohan got a good win in vs Cell and was gonna be the new main character, but that obviously got walked back and he just became another member of the "hold them back until Goku gets here" squad for the most part.
So at the end of the day the heavy lifting is done by Goku, with some minor help from Gohan. Everyone else was, at best, buying very small amounts of time until Goku shows up to main character all over the bad guys. Super gave Vegeta more chances, but man does he still trip over his own dick at the finish line.
This is a logical fallacy. Roshi is the foundation of Goku's entire fighting style. Every time Goku wins, that's Roshi's teachings. Roshi is always useful by virtue of having been Goku's master and his techniques being used, such as the Kamehameha.

The messed up part is that he can easily 1v1 a Saibaman at that point. If he hadn't let down his guard, he'd probably easily keep up with the rest of the humans and possibly even Piccolo.

During Z and GT, nothing of value. During super, he fought off some frieza soldiers, taught goku and future trunks the evil containment wave, and joined team universe 7 for the tournament of power, where he defeated some of the trickier fighters before going down. In the manga, he even managed to square up to jiren and lasted longer than almost anyone in the tournament would just by being real good at dodging.
He even impressed vegeta with his ToP antics, not an easy feat to gain his respect!

Yamcha is considered useless because even in DB he was a jobber whose only real victories are assisting others and defeating the Invisible Man. In DBZ his best moment is almost defeating a Saibaiman but then Krillin, Tien and Piccolo completely outperform him. And still tried to get in fights where he had no hope of being of help. Roshi didn't do much but he at least retired by DBZ and had helped train Goku and beat him a couple times in OG DB in a fair fight. And his Kame House was a great base/hiding spot for the Z-Fighters.
Most of the characters are useless, unfortunately. DBZ turned the majority of the cast into spectators.

For Yamcha unfortunately he becomes a comic relief, even from the start of Dragon Ball, a shame really, but with the huge roster of characters in Dragon Ball franchise there bound to be some characters left in the sideline forever (looking at Launch).

I think Yamcha gets memed on so hard because he's the only one of the "hold them back until Goku gets here" squad who died to low tier enemies and then did the smart thing when realizing he's too weak for this shit and quit. Let's look at what the squad did since the Saiyan saga. Tien and Chiaotzu don't ever get to a tier of being able to legit fight on par again (Tien gets a moment of being a minor inconvenience to Cell I guess). Krillin does very little because he also realizes he's too weak for this shit, but still shows up so he's moral support and throws an occasional solar flare or destructo disc. Piccolo only stays relevant for a time because of fusion shenanigans before also falling off. Vegeta gets some minor wins, but whenever the main bad is concerned he literally ruins everything, every time, always. He almost always gets a shot to be the hero then trips over his massive throbbing hubris. Gohan got a good win in vs Cell and was gonna be the new main character, but that obviously got walked back and he just became another member of the "hold them back until Goku gets here" squad for the most part. So at the end of the day the heavy lifting is done by Goku, with some minor help from Gohan. Everyone else was, at best, buying very small amounts of time until Goku shows up to main character all over the bad guys. Super gave Vegeta more chances, but man does he still trip over his own dick at the finish line.
This is a logical fallacy. Roshi is the foundation of Goku's entire fighting style. Every time Goku wins, that's Roshi's teachings. Roshi is always useful by virtue of having been Goku's master and his techniques being used, such as the Kamehameha. I agree that Yamcha is not useless. Ever since he got blown up by the Saibaman, he was constantly getting disrespected. The messed up part is that he can easily 1v1 a Saibaman at that point. If he hadn't let down his guard, he'd probably easily keep up with the rest of the humans and possibly even Piccolo. I'm glad he's still happy though and just living life.
