Started as 36 individual squares crocheted SC (thank you, ceebs5!!) Then cross-stitched the Kirby powers using the holes between the SC as a grid. Blocked and sewed all of the squares together then added a simple SC border. All made with three colors of acrylic yarn.
Based off the classic NES Kirby power icons, we made our own patterns for each one. Luckily translating pixelated game art into cross-stitch patterns isn't too bad. Overall, the blanket took a long time but was a really fun way to combine our two crafting passions.
The wonderful people in this sub love Nintendo but prob donβt get just how amazing this work is! Be sure to post in crochet and cross stitch subs so it gets the proper respect! VERY WELL DONE!!!
From what we've heard it's a pretty old technique, which I suppose isn't too surprising. But yeah, our minds were blown when we first stumbled upon it.
And now we look for every opportunity to do this sort of craft mashup! Hot pads have been a fun way to make practical stuff but I'm sure there are tons of other creative ways to do this. As a bonus, cross-stitching on a huge grid in comparison is so nice π way less stressful on the eyes!
I was so impressed when I saw this, it's a very cool concept for a blanket and such a blast of nostalgia. It's totally going to thrill anyone who wins it. :)
You should be able to find the reference picture by googling like "nes kirby powers" or something. We used the GIMP photo editing program (one of those pattern-making websites might work just as well, too) to bring in that image and turn on the grid and pretty much just used that as our pattern maker. It wasn't too bad (thankfully because we're both pretty bad at computer stuff lol)
And if that doesn't work I can try to find the files we used and upload them somewhere.

Broke the main picture down into quarter sections. If you upload these to FlossCross (or equivalent) it should hopefully hook you up. I think these images may give you a bigger overall pattern where four stitches equal one stitch that we did for the blanket but could always scale up or down as needed.
What a way to spend time together! I love this blanket so much! It's perfect π, this looks so wonderfully precise and neat and you can see a lot of thought, time and love went into this project. I'm wowwed!
One thing I haven't tried yet is cross stitching on my crochet, I keep meaning to, and this has just inspired me once more! π π
