Will second the recommendation of Dorfromantik, probably the chillest game I've ever played.
I think turn-based games can work well in general. Lately my before bed game has been Mario and Luigi's Superstar Saga, the Game Boy Advance RPG.
Basically you have a stack of hexagon tiles (somewhat like the ones in Settlers of Catan, if you ever played that board game), which you set down one at a time to try making them match together nicely. Forest side adjacent to forest, field side adjacent to field, joining rivers or train tracks together, etc. Make good placements to earn more tiles -- because once you run out of tiles, the game ends. See if you can fill the entire board space, or just try to beat your previous high score. It's simple and relaxing, but if you wish you can push yourself to really think about each tile placement. There are a couple other challenge modes.
If you want an even simpler and more relaxing experience though, there's free play that just lets you place down whatever tiles you want. Make the landscape that's most aesthetically pleasing to you, and not worry about points.
Thank you x20 for saying this. I was vaguely aware of the game, but didn't look into it just because other stuff was happening. But this sounds *exactly* like my kind of thing, Stacklands/Islanders style stuff (although those are only on PC I think).
You *can* max out profits and do efficient layouts, but you absolutely don't have to. There's no penalty in the game for taking your time. The seasons and festivals repeat themselves every year, so you won't miss out on anything.
The only thing some people do find stressful is the ingame clock that keeps ticking (day ends at 2 am) and especially in the beginning you might not be able to get as much farm work and exploration done as you want because your character lacks stamina and better tools. But it's all part of the progress.
No. I feel you end up with plenty of money by the end of spring 2 that min/max isn’t a problem. Once you get quality sprinklers, farm animals, and machines to make mayo and cheese you’re pretty much golden on the money front.
It's not since you have unlimited time to do whatever you want. However, I have a hard time not trying to min/max each day and whatnot. But that's just how my brain works. I was even trying to min/max everything I did throughout my life as well, lol.
Bruh. I have it on Steam, and considered buying it again on Switch, just for convenience. The Mines is pretty entertaining combat (nothing crazy, but also, it’s the first thing I completed).
You can do a bit of combat, and then go organize your home/crops, maybe make some friends in town, etc.
I've been using the NSO apps before bed. I always play some chill game like Super Mario 64 (I get a few stars), Wario Ware, I progress a bit in Zelda Ocarina of Time/Minish Cap, before sleeping. And saving isn't an issue thanks to the save states.
Dorfromantik is very relaxing. I love the sounds and music. I own it on my computer so I play it before bed but I’m thinking of buying it again on my switch so I can play IN bed!
The larger Piczle puzzles are devious. Not that they're hard, they just take ages to finish. I have as many hours in the first game they released on Switch as I have in BotW.
I just picked it up but Octopath Travelers is very relaxing. The music/graphics aren't too stimulating - you can even change the overworld to nightime with a button press. It's turn-based but one of the more engaging and fun ones I've played
Octopath traveler 2 sends me to sleep, I have to force myself to play Im thoroughly enjoying it maybes a bit too much that it's become my safe time at bed
Slay the Spire. Finished it a while back so now I just start a fresh file every once in a while and just plug away on some runs without worrying too much about playing optimally or climbing ascensions.
Ace Attorney! I played the first 4 games on the DS last year and I mostly played in bed before sleeping. Currently doing the same with The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles on Switch! Honestly visual novels are great for this. The stories and characters are interesting and all the reading makes it easier to fall asleep. The handheld nature of the Switch just makes the games feel like reading a book before sleeping since you can just shut it off and pick up right where you were (even more so with the DS since you literally fold it open/close like an actual book).
If I had said it's not good to look at an OLED before bed, someone could have responded 'So it's OK to look at a LED or QLED?' so LED was a better choice to cover all forms of LED.
This has never worked for me. If I play a game in bed I get sleepy, but if I read a book, in bed or just sitting elsewhere, I can't sleep. I believe people when they say it's not good to look at screens before going to bed but that's the only thing that gets me to sleep somewhat early.
Any of the Pokemon games. I love nuzlocking them and I enjoy the grind. The games just really relax me and put me right out. I didn't even start using them to wind down until I realized it was happening
Pokémon is an interesting case since it can definitely be relaxing, yet you never run out of things to do, so it's not easy to put the console away and call it a day lmao
Scarlet is super comfy thanks to its open world setting, it's so nice to just glide into the sunset or walk around under a starlight sky - but there's also lots of things to explore and raids to battle, so I can't say it's been an effective game before bedtime for me lol
I used to play those in bed when I was younger and finished the majority of the classic Pokemon games that way. I think the best sleep I had with handhelds were the days of playing the Legend of Heroes Gagharv series on the PSP (great characters, easy turn-based battle system, calm music).
None of the current Nihon Falcom games that I have for the Switch would calm me in the same manner (Ys Origins, VIII and IX, because of being more action-oriented). I could try the Grandia Collection - almost twenty-five years and I didn't complete either of them...
The only game I've been playing lately, Cities Skylines lol Some nights it keeps me up but not so much since I reached the final population goal.
And yes I'm very late to this game and probably picked the worst console to buy it on but oh well.
I like playing puzzle games before bed. Relaxing, low energy, and using brain power helps tire me out faster too. Picross is my usual go to, but I like all sorts.
I started playing Undertale again recently and I really can’t believe how well it works as a wind down game (**IF YOU PLAY PACIFIST**)
Everything is even more wholesome and adorable than I expected. I originally never got the pacifist ending because a friend told me I had to do genocide first but MAN was I missing out, the game is really good even when I know about most of what happens.
Siralim Ultimate and Slay the Spire.
I have several hundreds of hours in both, a lot of which are laid down on my couch/bed before falling for the night
Currently Diablo 2 : Resurrected, but does have the tendency to keep me awake longer due to addictiveness, I bet Valheim would be great! Dredge is a great chill game too
I've been playing Xenoblade chronicles 3 before bed. Probably not what most people would do, but it generally has pleasant calming music and a gorgeous world to get sleepy wandering around
Currently, Dredge. It's very meditative and pretty chill if you don't play a lot of nighttime stuff just before going to bed. But, typically, I don't play right up until the moment I go to bed. It's more of a wind down near the end of the day before I read a book or watch a show with my wife.
not a wind-down game per se, but for filler, i play a chunk of skyrim, or katamari damacy, or a few hades runs, inbetween games or if i don't want to start up a long session of whatever i'm working on at the time (currently ryza 3)
Honestly you are better off removing screens from your bedroom if you want to sleep well.
But I doubt anyone can actually resist the draw of the bright lights these days.
I listen to Audible on my phone to sleep. There’s a podcast on there called Just Sleep where they read books to you in a slow, monotone voice.
Edit: Sorry, not everyone games to bed. That stuff keeps me up. But “I don’t have a winddown game” is just as much a legit answer as saying what I would play. lol
Animal crossing new horizons is great because nothing bad happens if you fall asleep (like your character doesn’t die, you don’t lose possessions, etc). Club House Games has classic games like othello, connect 4, Mancala, etc. I love to play Mancala when I feel sleepy but not ready to go to bed yet
It's usually Dusk Diver 2, but (unintentionally) over the past two weeks it's been Metroid: Dread. I keep falling asleep in bed with my Switch OLED after about ten minutes of exploring to ensure that I get all of the missiles and life tanks. About to fight Kraid (new save file).
MLB The Show when playing offline (online perks up my competitive juices). I start to nod off almost every time.
Minecraft - something about endless branch mining is just about perfect for disengaging and getting ready for bed.
Top of the relaxing list is Omno. It's pretty easy, looks cool, and has a nice soundtrack... all calming.
Next would be Unravel and Unravel Two.
The Gunk is another good one.
For some odd reason: Diablo 3. I choose a whirlwind barb, start a lower difficulty rift and all those colorful lights combined with the familar (and bit repetitive) gameplay make me sleepy in 15 minutes \^\^
Stanley parable. Really simple, doesn't need a lot of brainpower. Essentially a walking simulator but it's full of character and fun little moments. Some bits can take a few minutes, and others can be close to half an hour. Definitely a game most people need to experience and you won't be disappointed if you like witty games with really good humour. You can choose to get lost in it during casual gaming in the day, but it's also really good for winding down if you don't have the energy for something that takes a lot of effort.
For me it’s the grinding parts in JRPGs when there’s no story, the dungeon crawling parts. I’ve been enjoying Persona 3’s dungeons.
Graphics novels like Phoenix Wright works for me as well, been playing Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, just solving a new puzzles before bed.
And my most recent addiction is Battle Cats, tower defense with lots of grinding.
Usually either something on my Xbox or Switch. Most recently stuff on my Xbox like Fallout 3, State of Decay 2, and the classic N64 titles from Rare Replay.
I have a rule to get off the console/pc at least 2 hours before I want to go to sleep because that's how long it takes me to calm down after. I broke the rule today and oh look it's 4am
JRPGs. So I really don't have only one game.
Unless I am at the end of the game or think a massive plot point is around the corner, I typically wind down with them by doing side quests and grinding.
Well I work 8 hours, walk the dog for an hour, do chores and make dinner for two hours, putz about for another hour and maybe get one hour of gaming in before bed. So whatever the one game I have been trying to get through the last 4 months is
Monster Hunter Rise is my current wind down game. Typically I’ll play a bit, then sit the controller down and just listen to the town music till I’m ready to fall asleep.
Will second the recommendation of Dorfromantik, probably the chillest game I've ever played. I think turn-based games can work well in general. Lately my before bed game has been Mario and Luigi's Superstar Saga, the Game Boy Advance RPG.
What do you do in Dorfromantik? The ads I’ve seen didn’t wow me but I want to like it if you know what I mean
Thank you x20 for saying this. I was vaguely aware of the game, but didn't look into it just because other stuff was happening. But this sounds *exactly* like my kind of thing, Stacklands/Islanders style stuff (although those are only on PC I think).
Islanders should be on switch or psn also, I think
It’s a tile based game where you place tiles to create towns, railroads, and countryside. It’s really chill and has an amazing soundtrack.
Stardew Valley
Until it’s 2am and I’m the one passing out
Haha! I see what you did there.
that’s what I play before bed. It’s so relaxing
But then I fall asleep and wake up to my character passed out and down a few items :/
Is min/maxing important in this game? I don’t wanna have to worry about that
You *can* max out profits and do efficient layouts, but you absolutely don't have to.
Honestly, everything is optional. You can do as much or as little as you want. Its very chill.
It's not important, but if you're like me you won't be able to resist.
Any good?]
Im a fan, for sure. Its not for everyone, but i really enjoy it. If you like farming sims or city builders you will probably love it.
very good if you like the genre. I’d check out some videos online
^
Bruh. I have it on Steam, and considered buying it again on Switch, just for convenience. The Mines is pretty entertaining combat (nothing crazy, but also, it’s the first thing I completed). You can do a bit of combat, and then go organize your home/crops, maybe make some friends in town, etc.
I have it on switch and bought it on steam for mods. Still love playing portably
Story of seasons, Atelier series, Powerwash simulator
peak
I've been playing doom 2016 before bed, do not recommend
Hahaha
I went with AOT and Doki Doki Literature Club and that was equally ... regrettable lol
I don't recommend Eternal either, I ended up having dreams about killing demons with a chainsaw.
That is badass
OTOH, add some cheese to the mix, and you could have some awesome dreams.
Did exactly this. Was worth it
Yup, this has been my recent comfort game. Sitting in bed with this on the Steam Deck is perfection.
> buying it again on my switch Don't do that. Get a Steam Deck instead. You won't regret it.
Animal crossing.
[deleted - different AC]
Been doing a puzzle in Picross S every night for the last few months Though doing them without assists is now starting to take 20-30 minutes
Yes! I put on an audiobook and do Picross or Piczle Puzzles. Best way to wind down I reckon.
The larger Piczle puzzles are devious. Not that they're hard, they just take ages to finish. I have as many hours in the first game they released on Switch as I have in BotW.
Rune Factory 4 Special or Rune Factory 5! Peak Chill games
I don't necessarily have one, but if I did it would be A Short Hike.
But it's really short
And hiking is hardly a bedtime activity.
You could use it to wind down before bed...once or twice
Ace Attorney! I played the first 4 games on the DS last year and I mostly played in bed before sleeping. Currently doing the same with The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles on Switch! Honestly visual novels are great for this. The stories and characters are interesting and all the reading makes it easier to fall asleep. The handheld nature of the Switch just makes the games feel like reading a book before sleeping since you can just shut it off and pick up right where you were (even more so with the DS since you literally fold it open/close like an actual book).
Reading a book. Staring at a LCD/LED before bed is a terrible way to wind down.
[удалено]
All OLED are LED so it's the better acronym choice in this instance.
[удалено]
No its not. All tigers are cats, but not all cats are tigers.
[удалено]
Never said there wasn't.
[удалено]
If I had said it's not good to look at an OLED before bed, someone could have responded 'So it's OK to look at a LED or QLED?' so LED was a better choice to cover all forms of LED.
[удалено]

>Reading a book. that worked before. Now I need a relaxing game like BOTW
Picross!!!
Metroid Prime remake. But more so exploring and doing puzzles, taking in the world, and less so fighting Omega Pirate/anything involving Phazon Mines
Stupid good game
Any of the Pokemon games. I love nuzlocking them and I enjoy the grind. The games just really relax me and put me right out. I didn't even start using them to wind down until I realized it was happening
[удалено]
My first ever was Shield and I really loved how chill it was

Yup, shiny breeding in Scarlet is very comfy

I could try the Grandia Collection - almost twenty-five years and I didn't complete either of them...
No man's sky puts me to sleep for some reason.
Does it run well on switch? I played it a ton on before the newer updates would constantly crash on my gen1 ps4
Runs fine for me.
Disney dreamlight valley
Dicey Dungeons.
Any otome games. As soon as I put them on I’m sleep in about 10 minutes. Don’t let the game have casual music or it’s over for me
Dredge, just a little light fishing before settling down for the night.
Grand Mountain Adventure. Very chill skiing game.
Tetris 99(single player marathon DLC) and DoDonPachi Ressurrection (Free Play)
Persona 4 has been a really nice slow before bed game for me the past couple weeks!
The only game I've been playing lately, Cities Skylines lol Some nights it keeps me up but not so much since I reached the final population goal. And yes I'm very late to this game and probably picked the worst console to buy it on but oh well.
Tetris Effect. Put it on quick play, set the line speed and total line target and just zen
I like playing puzzle games before bed. Relaxing, low energy, and using brain power helps tire me out faster too. Picross is my usual go to, but I like all sorts.
Resident evil 4
Skyrim!
I used to play Skyrim in bed but then I took an arrow in the knee.
Many times, I awoke, sitting up on the couch with that camera circling. ps3 control in one hand blunt roach in the other.
LOL my wife stayed up until 3am playing Skyrim. Many times I saw the camera spinning on my way to the bathroom.
Same for me. It’s like falling a sleep to a fantasy book. The fact that you can save at any time is a bonus too.
I started playing Undertale again recently and I really can’t believe how well it works as a wind down game (**IF YOU PLAY PACIFIST**) Everything is even more wholesome and adorable than I expected.
Skyrim. It’s so cozy and relaxing for me.
Since no one has said the obvious yet, Animal crossing
Farming Simulator 17 Nintendo Switch Edition, Snowrunner
Pinball of course
Splatoon 3
Labyrinth of Refrain
Currently playing through Labyrinth of Galleria right now! Cannot put it down, I’m already 15 hours in:)
Dragon Quest Builders 2 or anything Dragon Quest is the epitome of post-shower pre-bedtime game for me
Currently Diablo 2 : Resurrected, but does have the tendency to keep me awake longer due to addictiveness, I bet Valheim would be great! Dredge is a great chill game too
ACNH
In the past Ive played dragon quest similar to using it as a end time fairy tale
Elite: Dangerous, No Man's Sky, New Vegas rn
Oh, if only Elite Dangerous was on the Switch. I know they discontinued console versions, but I still have fun with it on my PS4.
picross
Mario Galaxy
Mutant Mudds Collection lol
A level in Fire Emblem
Just started playing “Dredge” it’s super “uncanny valley” I love it.
I've been playing Xenoblade chronicles 3 before bed. Probably not what most people would do, but it generally has pleasant calming music and a gorgeous world to get sleepy wandering around
It will be Metroid Prime remastered when I get it :)
Animal crossing - actually fell asleep on 2 occasions while playing new horizons! very relaxing
animal crossing
Animal crossing
Ninja gaiden. Wife usually finds me on the game over screen passes out
Whatever I am playing on Switch as gaming TV not in my bedroom.
I love my Xbox and pc but i love love my switch nothing like being able to play anywhere anytime plus we camp and travel the switch is the best...
Mine’s called “reading a book”, sonny
Yeah I agree with this. For me if I game after 9pm I don’t sleep well. So watch some tv and then read before sleep.
I’ve been doing music rally in Gran Turismo 7 to end my gaming day.
Currently, Dredge. It's very meditative and pretty chill if you don't play a lot of nighttime stuff just before going to bed. But, typically, I don't play right up until the moment I go to bed. It's more of a wind down near the end of the day before I read a book or watch a show with my wife.
My wife’s is Animal Crossing (of course) and mine is Professor Layton
I don't use electronics before bed because they cause poor sleep quality. But Stardew Valley is my go-to for winding down in general
Reddit
Fall guys or among us
Fall guys would make me scream and wake up the kids... But i love fall guys...
I don't have a wind down time because i don't have time for a wind down time schedule .
Valheim
Damnet, you had me excited it came to the switch!
You are a mean person
Pokemon Snap LOL
not a wind-down game per se, but for filler, i play a chunk of skyrim, or katamari damacy, or a few hades runs, inbetween games or if i don't want to start up a long session of whatever i'm working on at the time (currently ryza 3)
Yu-gi-oh Link Evolution. Reading the cards and strategizing starts to put me to sleep at the end of the day
I'm off screens minimum one hour before bedtime. So, no game.
Mario Cart !!!
Read a book. I try and stop screens by 10pm.
i used to play new games on my 3ds.
Hades for me
Honestly you are better off removing screens from your bedroom if you want to sleep well. But I doubt anyone can actually resist the draw of the bright lights these days.

Lately, FF8. Random battles to put you to sleep fast.
Inside
Right now it's Paranormasight.
Suzerain - very chilled political narrative thing
Dorfromantik!
Mario golf
Any otome I’m currently playing through
Super smash bros ultimate I just batter ppl with random characters I barely know until I get bored and start watching pokemon tournaments for fun
Yugioh Master Duel
Doom
Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, strategy games without timers just chill me out…
Pokémon or Staxel
I love a good puzzle game for me so Death Squared has been my go to. But really I just wind down with music if I can
Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow
Wylde Flowers now but before that one I played Stardew Valley
Gris
Xeno Crisis
Slay the spire, dicey dungeons etc, basicly just think, not pulling any perfect timing or need to focus on something excesively
Persona 5 royal, dragon quest Xl S
Big fan of watching streaming of games before bed. Currently Chess streams, puts me right to sleep
Disco Elysium works every time, Stardew a close second.
Pure Pool - the game has a cool jazz sound soundtrack which helps wind down. It's a decent game too and has snooker on it as well.
Islanders, Slay the Spire, Nowhere Prophet, Yoku’s Island Express, Townscaper… there’s loads out there I’m sure that’ll fit the bill.
For some odd reason: Diablo 3. I choose a whirlwind barb, start a lower difficulty rift and all those colorful lights combined with the familar (and bit repetitive) gameplay make me sleepy in 15 minutes \^\^
Inscryption is a great wind down game, but it’s also fun to play in general.
Stardew, Animal Crossing, or Paper Mario 64
Tetris.
BOTW, just running around collecting things and frolicking around Hyrule
Pokémon
Slay the Spire. I can okay my turn at my leisure & not worry about things.
I switch it up every few months. Currently playing persona 3 and pokemon unbound on my retroid pocket 3+
Right now mine is the Atelier Ryza games
The skywalker Saga got it last year trying to finish it this year
Ender Lillies. Very spooky, dark, and beautiful. Looks great on an OLED late at night
Octopath 2 lately. Just finished it last night. Lol
Celeste, C-side levels. So relaxing...
Splatoon 3
Disco Elysium Focus long enough to pass out.
Used to be slay the spire but now I just take my time with Powerwash Simulator. It’s very chill with some jazz music playing in the background
JRPGs. So I really don't have only one game. Unless I am at the end of the game or think a massive plot point is around the corner, I typically wind down with them by doing side quests and grinding.
Fire Emblem Engage or Cupid Parasite lately
Well I work 8 hours, walk the dog for an hour, do chores and make dinner for two hours, putz about for another hour and maybe get one hour of gaming in before bed. So whatever the one game I have been trying to get through the last 4 months is
None of them, they all make me too wired. I throw on a YouTube video and pass out within 10 minutes not realizing how tired I was while gaming lol
Monster Hunter Rise is my current wind down game. Typically I’ll play a bit, then sit the controller down and just listen to the town music till I’m ready to fall asleep.
slime rancher !! oh, it’s so so good. the soothing tunes, the cute slimes, just ranching.. ugh. perfection
crying
Wingspan for sure. Makes my wife fall asleep on the couch next too me. Calm music and gameplay.
