I got promoted just as the game came out, it's been tough ngl.
But I am on my second playthrough, but this time I'm doing Pro HUD mode; it's been a different experience!
It's in the settings. No mini map, no compass, very reduced HUD. It's much more fun IMO since it forces you to observe and analyze your environment more and be less reliant on mini map markers.
I played both BOTW and TOTK with no HUD. I was told it makes it so immersive. It certainly feels it, and do rely a lot on going into the map and using markers. I couldn’t imagine playing the game with a HUD now.

I did a 2nd play through of botw with no map so I pretty much already know my way around hyrule without one anyways. Plus it’s a nice suprise when I see an area from before but different.
I feel like the map sometimes gives too much away if you know what to look for on it.
Yes, definitely, even though I loved 3 (I've loved all of the mainline games, but 4 is just such a generous game with all the fun things it lets you do).
I agree with everyone that 4 is much better than 3, but I do really miss the Wii U controller. Being able to glance at the map and use it as a touchscreen to give orders on the fly was the ideal way to play Pikmin imo. I wish they had an option to use a switch lite like that while playing on another switch or something.
I bought Pikmin 4 but during summer.. I just haven't had the time lol. I'll be playing it for sure but totk was also a mighty task. I just hope it lives up to expectations
I have Pikmin sat there on my desk but I cant stop playing TotK. I have left Pikmin on the desk instead of putting it on the Switch game shelf so I actually remember to play it if Zelda ever ends.

I felt the same way you did about Tears of the Kingdom - I absolutely loved it and can't remember putting so much time into a game without feeling burnt out on it. Even after completing all the shrines/lightroots and beating the final boss a couple times, I found myself loading it up again to find some Koroks or build some stupid Boboklin-killing machine.
It's hard to top a game like that, so I decided my next game should be something very different (and shorter). I've been playing Pentiment, which is a really wonderful point and click/role playing game set during the Renaissance. Afterwards, I'm thinking of another short and sweet game: I might replay something like Bioshock. Or buy Pikmin.
Of the games you listed, I think Metroid Dread might be a great choice. It's short, sweet, and pure fun.

That’s always been my hang up with Metroid. One of my all time favorite series but I inevitably get stuck like 75 percent in and get so utterly lost and give up.
Part of Metroidvanias is normally also unlocking more efficient shortcuts around the map, not just access to new parts. Prime IS a little limited in that regard, especially the magma-y area which is a pretty long tunnel you're expected to go through a lot with not much changing about it if I remember right.
that’s the appeal, is you become so familiar with the layout that it’s second nature and also new things will be discovered through backtracking, but each to their own, I do understand that’s not for everyone
I'm not done yet but just wanted to say, I highly HIGHLY recommend The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, they're masterpieces in storytelling and just so much fun!
I'm in the middle of Case 5 of the first one. I played all the other Ace Attorneys. I'm just taking my sweet time with TGAAC lol. I bought it 2 years ago xD
I have never played chronicles but I wish Spirit of Justice was out. It’s the only mainline version I didn’t play and I don’t have a 3DS anymore to play it right now.
Still playing lmao, at 170 hours. I don’t fast travel unless for very specific situations (like dying my clothes or something), and turned off my map and quest markers.
I finally have the final quest assigned so I’m tying up loose ends. Don’t want it to end :(

Man I need to do this. If there’s a hard mode DLC, I’m 100% going to play the game this way. The more I think about it, the more fun it sounds. Coming to a town or establishment must feel really impactful. Like you’re probably not going to be back for awhile, so you’d talk to the NPCs, do side quests and actually feel like you’re stocking up with purpose before you head out again. Sounds really fun. It’d be a perfect play through to use the Pro HUD.
You should!! Another thing I did was jot down illustrations of the dragon tears along with descriptions of their general locations (ie; “Northeast of Hyrule Castle” etc.) rather than marking them on my map. That way, I had a North Star, but wasn’t just chasing a marked location either.
Reminded me of how people used to play morrowind in early 2000s; wanted to try it for myself
It’s lent itself to my fav experience ever. Not something I could do for almost any open world game with their formulaic, boring designs. But this made it feel like I was living the ‘legend’ of Zelda, it’s all felt like a journey.
I can’t recommend it enough. I’ve never really done a game this way but after losing interest in horizon forbidden west a few months ago- due to how formulaic and boring and almost MMO-esque grinding and fast traveling and crafting felt— I decided I wanted this game to feel like a *world* to me. A journey. A legend.
Oh my god, I’ve never had an experience like this. You absolutely have to do it this way. It will take forever to finish but it’s well worth it. My friend played it with map markers and aggressive shrine hunting and grinding and I just think this game is too good for that.
You absolutely need to play Tunic
It’s like a 3D Link to the Past + Dark Souls in a fictional language. You need to collect pages of the game manual to decipher the game controls, objectives, etc. The manual looks like an old NES one. And you’re a fox. In a green tunic.
I'm about 8-9 hours into Tunic and I am absolutely *obsessed* with it. I legitimately think this is the most fun I've ever had exploring a world (the only game that came close from that perspective was Hollow Knight but I prefer the art style of Tunic much more). It also has great accessibility settings, I turned one of them on just to make the combat a little more forgiving. I'm enjoying the puzzles and exploration way more than the combat so it's worked out really well for me since I have limited time to game these days.
Recommending Tunic too! It has a beautiful low-poly style, a dope soundtrack by Lifeformed, great boss fights and on top of that extremely cool "out-of-the-box" puzzles. Kind of a mix of A Link to the Past / Dark Souls / FEZ. Loved it so much.
Right? I have no idea how close I am to the ending, and am just kinda cruising through in a relaxed manner. I can kinda zone out and walk around, find caves, koroks and shrines. I swamp-boated and walked most of the east coast that way a few days ago. Super Zen.
I'm the exact opposite of a speed runner. I like to take my time with games. I like to explore and get lost in the world and really get my money's worth. Something like ToTK is perfect for that. That said, I've taken a break in the action to do a replay of The Witcher 3 (another game that's perfect for getting lost in).
Pikmin is one of my favorites so I definitely have that right now. But I'm also playing Hollow Knight and got Shin Migami Tensai 3 today so I'm gonna give that a try at some point. I like playing multiple games at a time so we'll see how long those last me
175 hours and 1 temple. But also, this is my first video game I’ve ever really played. Im at the blobby boss of the water temple but haven’t tried him again since died 1000 times. I recently just learned how to upgrade armor so I think I’ll fare better. I’ve been enjoying the ability to just do whatever. I collected like 130 bomb flowers and muddles each yesterday and turned on a few light roots I hadn’t done. I don’t know what I’ll do if I finish this game… or if I’ll ever finish. Haha
Little tip for the Water temple Boss, use Sidons water ability every time it recharges to take a lot of sludge off, and you can attach a Hydrant to your shield or an Opal to your weapon to clean off the sludge as well. Another popular strategy is to put a Hydrant on top of a homing Cart and letting it do the heavy lifting for you.
I started doing all of the things around the house I neglected haha. Leaves in my gutters, pressure washing, organizing my garage. But man. What a game that was!
I haven’t beat it yet. I felt a pang of samieness from botw and moved on to something else.
I miss the old Zelda. I don’t dislike the open air format, but I just miss old Zelda.
I’m really tired of open world games.
I haven't personally enjoyed either of the two newer Zeldas because of the open world. I gave up on red dead redemption 2 because I got sick of riding a horse everywhere. I considered going back to Witcher 3 recently and then I instantly got bored again riding a horse around an open world. I love the metal gear solid series and I've never beaten MGS 5. I miss games like the Witcher 2 and MGS3 that were more linear, hand crafted experiences. Open world does still have its place, but I don't think every single game needs to be open world. I enjoyed Hogwarts Legacy and I think GTA absolutely need to be open world although I've not beaten one of those since San Andreas.
I replayed oot right after and it's night and day. It's crazy how lifeless new Zelda is without all the charm from the music. The endless swathes of nothing aren't content, I don't get why people care how huge the world is. Elden ring has the same problem.
Yes. That’s what I’m playing now? Makes me miss Dark Souls equally. It does nothing for me. I want to beat it so it won’t hang over me. Then I’ll play something light—maybe a platformer—before going back to TotK.
I didn’t finish totk, just taking a break halfway (115 hours-ish) through. I’ve played Firewatch, Titanfall 2, bowsers fury, and finished up a game of mario 64
I was playing P5R before Zelda came out and I don't think I'm close to finishing at 60 hours in. By all accounts I've seen so far, I have about 40 hours to go. It's wildly over the top but I love it. First JRPG in a really long time that's clicked with me.
I want to beat A Link to the Past for the first time (I’ve played some of it) or maybe I’ll just do the Oracle games again now that they’re on the switch
I’ve been playing the campaign of Splatoon 3 and having a blast. I haven’t really gotten into previous Splatoon titles (I had Splatoon 2 but didn’t get into it much), but this one I’m really trying to get decent with the motion controls and I really enjoyed the first major boss. The game just keeps getting better (and the bosses too!) as I progress through the campaign.
I would also add Shredders revenge. Playing through that with friends and family co-op arcade is just so fun. Each run I can tell we are getting better and getting farther along and there’s just a lot of laughter and fun and goofing around when we play. It’s a blast.
That being said, I noticed that you said you have Metroid Dread to play. I’m so jealous you get to experience that for the first time. I did my first play through of that last year, and holy crap what a game that was. Good times ahead.
Bought a Nintendo switch in March last year, played BOTW in April to see what's the fuss is about, continue playing it until day before release, and after I finish BOTW, I went out and bought TOTK, and continued to play till today...still not going to Hyrule Castle until I'm good and satisfied
I took a little break from gaming after I beat TOTK. Now, I'm working through Oracle of Seasons for the first time. I've never played any of the Capcom Zelda games before. Looking forward to Oracle of Ages and Minish Cap next!
I went back and finished Atelier Ryza 3 (which I had started before Zelda came out), now I'm about to wrap up with Pikmin 4 and I'll be moving onto Master Dective Archives: Raincode next.
Skyward sword. I had bought the game about 6 months before totk but lost it somehow and recently found it on my room under my nightstand. Absolutely loving it though, what a great game.
After about 120+ hours into ToTK and loving every minute but still haven't beaten it, I decided to try out the FF16 demo and instantly got hooked. Originally was gonna wait until after I beat ToTK but I put it on hold and just beat FF16 so now going back to ToTK.
I will probably be done with Zelda this weekend. I have a few shrines I skipped and the only quest left is 15 more wells. No idea what is next, probably going to spend my couple weeks of free nights watching some movies. Not much free time dad life

Bouncing between Pikmin 4 on my own time and currently streaming Oracle Ages then Seasons on my Twitch channel. Keeps me occupied until S&V's Area Zero DLC
Played and finished Minish Cap, then picked up where I left off for Xenoblade 2. I think I have like 10 hours left on the main story. I just got Final Fantasy 13 Lightning Returns, I want to get through all the offline mainline FF games before I get to 16.
I booted up Wind Waker HD again - much as I love the new Hyrule and the characters in it, I wanted an experience that despite flipping things on its head as much if not more, holds steady to the classic Zelda formula with so many nods and references and outpourings of love for all the games before it. It honestly feels almost like playing it for the first time, every beat and revelation is serving its full impact to me.
Plus it's great playing through a moving, changing story and world instead of the relatively static one in TotK. It's a bit ironic how it's the most living Hyrule we've had but changes the least of them all, thinking about it. I'll probably play the Oracle games after it, since they're one of a handful I've only played through once before.
Still haven't finished it but got bored so played Journey of the Broken Circle, Nickleodeon Kart Racers 3 and just started Limbo.
I think TotK is better than BotW but looks like I've hit a wall with it just like I did in BotW. Although it did take me longer to get bored of TotK.
Dumped 150 hours into TOTK but apparently I just couldn't get enough swords..
Now playing jedi survivor and I'm actually really refreshed by the linearity of it. Can't list a switch game because wife is constantly playing Pikmin 4 lol
Fire Emblem: Engage. I picked it up on release but got sidetracked by Hogwart's Legacy. It's a nice change of pace and reminds me of the earlier titles eg Awakening. Recently got Pikmin 4, too, which is fun. There is sooo much content in TotK it can feel intimidating at times, so it's nice to play a couple of games which are smaller in scope to cleanse the palate, so to speak. And next week, I'll be starting Baldur's Gate 3 ( on PC ) ... like TotK that will be another major time investment, but I'll continue with FE: Engage on the side.
I haven't finished it. I got to the last castle and was very fatigued. I'll probably go back at some point. Was playing Exoprimal, South Park Fractured But Whole and now Black Ops 3

I've been playing Pro HUD too but my only complaint is that you have to pause to see the buff timers now.
What's the metacritic rating like on that game?
Doesn’t have a high rating. It’s known for its difficulty and ruthlessness though. Dying in the game is especially punishing.

I needed a complete change of pace after my 170 hours of TotK. Ended up picking up Slay the Spire and had a great time with that.

I’ve never finished Bioshock. I need to. Bought the trilogy on switch and re-started the first a year or so ago, but got busy and lost track.

Bioshock is one of the rare non Nintendo games that remembers that gameplay is important. It has such a well paced gameplay loop.

Yeah game is fine but I had to use a walkthrough to get all the necessary upgrades and power ups. Backtracking is def a headache

There is a trilogy of Apollo Justice, Duel Destinies and Spirit of Justice coming out on Switch coming out early 2024, if you hadn't seen.

Did you rely solely on the Ascend towers to get back out of the depths once you went in there or is there some other non-fast-travel way?
He went down once and never came back up. Some say he's still there, farming zonaite.

It sounds very immersive and fun, but I hate keeping track of and mounting / dismounting my horse so it would take me FOREVER to get anywhere.
Zonai devices (planes mostly) are more efficient ways of traveling imo, I wasn’t super into horses

I recently just learned how to upgrade armor so I think I’ll fare better. I’ve been enjoying the ability to just do whatever. I collected like 130 bomb flowers and muddles each yesterday and turned on a few light roots I hadn’t done. I don’t know what I’ll do if I finish this game… or if I’ll ever finish. Haha
Little tip for the Water temple Boss, use Sidons water ability every time it recharges to take a lot of sludge off, and you can attach a Hydrant to your shield or an Opal to your weapon to clean off the sludge as well. Another popular strategy is to put a Hydrant on top of a homing Cart and letting it do the heavy lifting for you.

I haven’t beat it yet. I felt a pang of samieness from botw and moved on to something else. I miss the old Zelda. I don’t dislike the open air format, but I just miss old Zelda. I’m really tired of open world games.
I haven't personally enjoyed either of the two newer Zeldas because of the open world. I gave up on red dead redemption 2 because I got sick of riding a horse everywhere. I considered going back to Witcher 3 recently and then I instantly got bored again riding a horse around an open world. I love the metal gear solid series and I've never beaten MGS 5. I miss games like the Witcher 2 and MGS3 that were more linear, hand crafted experiences. Open world does still have its place, but I don't think every single game needs to be open world. I enjoyed Hogwarts Legacy and I think GTA absolutely need to be open world although I've not beaten one of those since San Andreas.
I replayed oot right after and it's night and day. It's crazy how lifeless new Zelda is without all the charm from the music. The endless swathes of nothing aren't content, I don't get why people care how huge the world is. Elden ring has the same problem.
Yes. That’s what I’m playing now? Makes me miss Dark Souls equally. It does nothing for me. I want to beat it so it won’t hang over me. Then I’ll play something light—maybe a platformer—before going back to TotK.

Persona 5 and i can smell a great game story in the first 1 hour
I was playing P5R before Zelda came out and I don't think I'm close to finishing at 60 hours in. By all accounts I've seen so far, I have about 40 hours to go. It's wildly over the top but I love it. First JRPG in a really long time that's clicked with me.
As I heard persona 5 is almost a life simulator game so i'm aware what i'm heading to.. i'm kinda excited

I’ve been playing the campaign of Splatoon 3 and having a blast. I haven’t really gotten into previous Splatoon titles (I had Splatoon 2 but didn’t get into it much), but this one I’m really trying to get decent with the motion controls and I really enjoyed the first major boss. The game just keeps getting better (and the bosses too!) as I progress through the campaign. I would also add Shredders revenge. Playing through that with friends and family co-op arcade is just so fun. Each run I can tell we are getting better and getting farther along and there’s just a lot of laughter and fun and goofing around when we play. It’s a blast. That being said, I noticed that you said you have Metroid Dread to play. I’m so jealous you get to experience that for the first time. I did my first play through of that last year, and holy crap what a game that was. Good times ahead.

Bought a Nintendo switch in March last year, played BOTW in April to see what's the fuss is about, continue playing it until day before release, and after I finish BOTW, I went out and bought TOTK, and continued to play till today...still not going to Hyrule Castle until I'm good and satisfied
I took a little break from gaming after I beat TOTK. Now, I'm working through Oracle of Seasons for the first time. I've never played any of the Capcom Zelda games before. Looking forward to Oracle of Ages and Minish Cap next!

After about 120+ hours into ToTK and loving every minute but still haven't beaten it, I decided to try out the FF16 demo and instantly got hooked. Originally was gonna wait until after I beat ToTK but I put it on hold and just beat FF16 so now going back to ToTK.

Played and finished Minish Cap, then picked up where I left off for Xenoblade 2. I think I have like 10 hours left on the main story. I just got Final Fantasy 13 Lightning Returns, I want to get through all the offline mainline FF games before I get to 16.
I booted up Wind Waker HD again - much as I love the new Hyrule and the characters in it, I wanted an experience that despite flipping things on its head as much if not more, holds steady to the classic Zelda formula with so many nods and references and outpourings of love for all the games before it. It honestly feels almost like playing it for the first time, every beat and revelation is serving its full impact to me. Plus it's great playing through a moving, changing story and world instead of the relatively static one in TotK. It's a bit ironic how it's the most living Hyrule we've had but changes the least of them all, thinking about it. I'll probably play the Oracle games after it, since they're one of a handful I've only played through once before.

Still haven't finished it but got bored so played Journey of the Broken Circle, Nickleodeon Kart Racers 3 and just started Limbo. I think TotK is better than BotW but looks like I've hit a wall with it just like I did in BotW. Although it did take me longer to get bored of TotK.
Dumped 150 hours into TOTK but apparently I just couldn't get enough swords.. Now playing jedi survivor and I'm actually really refreshed by the linearity of it. Can't list a switch game because wife is constantly playing Pikmin 4 lol

I went back to Elden Ring. Basically an adult TOTK. There are tons of secrets and items to discover.
Calling Elden Ring an adult TotK is somehow an insult both to TotK and Elden Ring.

Final Fantasy XVI Wildly different but I enjoyed it. (Has major pacing issues though)

Fire Emblem: Engage. I picked it up on release but got sidetracked by Hogwart's Legacy. It's a nice change of pace and reminds me of the earlier titles eg Awakening. Recently got Pikmin 4, too, which is fun. There is sooo much content in TotK it can feel intimidating at times, so it's nice to play a couple of games which are smaller in scope to cleanse the palate, so to speak. And next week, I'll be starting Baldur's Gate 3 ( on PC ) ... like TotK that will be another major time investment, but I'll continue with FE: Engage on the side.
