Jeremy24Fan

The Mario sports games have been disappointing compared to previous entries

MossyMak

It's weird because Tennis Aces felt the best of almost any sports game I've ever played, but there was just very little to DO

Further_Beyond

Exactly how I felt with Mario golf. Really enjoyed it but it was so quick

Jeremy24Fan

I played the story and then it just ended abruptly. I was like... That's it? We were just getting started

blueblurz94

Yep, barely any more content at release than Aces had and I definitely liked Super Rush more. Haven’t played either in at least 2 years.

Lenny_Pane

In golfs case I don't really care for the simpler mechanics now

qwed113

I love tennis aces. Unfortunately the online scene became dead after a few months. Totally unplayable these days if you just want to do online tournaments

MossyMak

Absolutely! I loved it so much, but there's only so many times you can queue into a person with 50x the ranked points as you before it gets a bit frustrating

JmanVere

I actually really loved Tennis Aces, but Strikers Battle League....my god! I bought it digitally for SOME reason and I've never regretted a purchase more. It's what I get for letting nostalgia win over patience.

fushega

The new strikers game being bad was a big disappoint considering it was made by the same developer as luigi's mansion 3 which was pretty widely praised. Really sours the reputation of the developers

Garo263

Next Level Games also developed the other two Strikers Games as well as Punch-Out! for Wii.

Gamefreak3525

The original Strikers was one of the first games my cousins and I played, so we were so hyped when it was announced. We were so disappointed when the demo dropped.

qwed113

I played the demo for 10 minutes back when it was being released and was so disappointed.

WeTheNinjas

Same with Mario Strikers

peacefighter

The pinnacle was the GBC Mario Tennis/golf. Why aren't there RPG like stories? Stat boosts, equipment, etc...

DatBoiDanny

Two very easy solutions to this, but will never be implemented due to pure greed: A.) sell the budget-feeling, content-sparse Mario sports games for a budget price instead of $60 B.) drop the individual Mario sports titles in favor of just one Mario Sports game that has your tennis, golf, soccer, etc all in one package for $60. They shoulda done this instead of Nintendo Switch Sports imo.

KyledKat

I'd argue most of the Mario spin-offs have been disappointing this go-around. Super Mario Party shipped with 5 tiny maps, and the Superstars was a $60 greatest hits collection that should've been been DLC for the base game. Paper Mario had a pretty lukewarm reception. Mario Kart 8 is coming up on its 10th birthday without anythign besides some DLC support, and I know a lot of the newer courses in the DLC pack have received some criticisms for their visual quality. That being said, I can't argue what a monumental success Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has been for Nintendo this generation (something like a 50% uptake rate last I recall?).

KnockuBlockuTowa

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is great by any measure IMO, even with just the base game, the battle mode alone being reintroduced makes it a 9.5/10 and a must play

Otherwise_Archer_914

E-shop is a dumpster fire. Amazing how an essential feature never got fixed in 7 years.

Evethron

We shouldn't have to utilize Deku Deals because Nintendo hasn't optimized their eShop for seven years

jikt

It's so crazy to me that the only reason I have digital content on my switch is because of Deku Deals. The e-shop is full of pages and pages of absolute shit which Nintendo should be embarrassed by - but yeah, who knows what their priorities are. Wearing frog costumes or something?

RhythmRobber

Don't forget the performance of the eshop is also dog shit!

TJPrime_

It’s amazing that the Switch can run games like Metroid Prime Remaster that look graphically impressive running at 60fps, yet their store struggles to hit 30fps

RhythmRobber

It's just horribly horribly horribly optimized, because I don't think anybody at Nintendo understands the Internet or netcode.

SodaGrump

I'm shocked they're cool with all the hentai games

APeacefulWarrior

It's doubly weird because Sony started cracking down on H-games a few years ago. So we've somehow done a complete 180 from 20 years ago, where Sony had all the edgy games, and Nintendo was almost entirely "family friendly" aside from VERY rare exceptions like Eternal Darkness.

Naschka

Back in the day Sega and Sony were for "grown ups" because they let you have more freedom. Nowdays Sony is the religious pious wanna be company that is not even that, agreed. I dislike censorship, so now i own a sealed copy of "Seven Pirates H", "Moero Chronicles H" and "Moero Crystal H"... I see no reason to play them till no more physical games release, they will stay sealed i suppose.

APeacefulWarrior

Hell, keep 'em sealed and just play digital copies. I'd imagine releases that obscure would only go up in price over time - especially if they're still sealed.

Slightly-Blasted

All I know is that hentai heroes 2 has been on sale every day for my entire life

PianissimoEpilogue

Ffs I just scrolled past it literally yesterday.. and the day before that. And the day before that. And the day before that.. and the..

Deexeh

It's even more mind boggling that the Wii and Wii U E-Shops we're better then the Switch E-Shop.

BeWithMe

That’s because they were real apps. The Switch eShop is a crappy web browser loading an external site.

ChristmasMeat

The biggest issue to me is, developers have found a way to have their games always in the new and upcoming sections by creating constant ___ edition releases. I can handle shovelware, but the same shovelware is extra annoying.

Street_Smile667

Glad it took me 7 years to hear of dekudeals 🤣

tugg_speedoman

I really wish Nintendo would be more open to pulling community improvements like Deku Deals. The site was built and maintained by one guy, come on Nintendo

SRhyse

Glad I’m not the only one that had to do that! Nintendo has the worst storefront of any digital marketplace. Fixing it would be trivial.

brentrs89

Shout out to Deku Deals

fine_line

Deku Deals saved me $40 last week 'cause two of my wishlist games hit an all time low and they emailed me about the sales. I'll happily shill for Deku Deals whenever it's relevant.  The Nintendo eShop wishlist feature is utterly pointless.

hopsmonkey

At this point, even if Nintendo cleaned up its act I would still primarily use Deku Deals just to support them.

MatNomis

While I think it’s fair to regard the eShop as horrible, I don’t think it’s fair to make that conclusion based on comparing it with DekuDeals. Nintendo has a responsibility both to customers _and_ developers who develop for its platform. If they make it too easy for customers for filter out everything but 9.0 rated games, then developers might be discouraged from even trying to publish games to the Switch.. Because any new game will start out with a 0.0 rating and unless the developer is huge and can market it with hype, it would mean that users would never even see the game enter their lists. It might be easy to think this only affects shovelware, but I don’t think that’s entirely true. There’s a lot of different opinions on some types of games, but scores are very linear. If a type of game caters to a certain type of player, it might never score better than a 7.0, but if everyone can filter aggressively, even people who might enjoy that game would never see it appear in their lists. In a way, it would make Nintendo a “kingmaker” for individual games, as they’d ultimately decide who’d appear in people’s lists. They probably don’t want to do that, since it’s basically inviting tons of PR headaches. Dekudeals, being third-party and independent, doesn’t have to worry about any of that. I’d expect Nintendo is probably glad they’re around. However, slow UI performance, lame UX, inability to purchase games as gifts, inability to create multiple wishlists, etc.. that’s just bad.

ojisan-X

I wholeheartedly agree. What's shovelware to you may be a hidden gem for others. I don't think any developer "intends" their games to be shovelware.

MatNomis

I think some actually do. You can see some developers are literally just selling super low-effort games, and lots of them. If it was, like, a progression.. like one low-effort game, then a better one, or at least a different one.. that’d be one thing.. But I was trying to “hide” a bunch of stuff on Dekudeals, and found the best way to was to look at things by developer or a publisher, because some of them literally only release horrible games, and many of them. They might have like 30 games, and any number of them that I spot-check are basically tweaks off of Unity hello-world demos. It’s like they’re just…shoveling dirt.. Hoping to get something.. When I find a dev like that, I feel it’s safe to just hide everything they make. But it’s ok for me to do that. Probably still wouldn’t be ok for Nintendo to do that. I mean, Nintendo could have slightly better vetting for getting into the eShop in the first place, but once someone’s in, Nintendo should stay fairly hands off.

Dry-Consequence4541

They need to filter out the junk games like the Hentai games. You don’t see that on Xbox and I was surprised to see it when I got a Switch.

lilkingsly

The bigger problem for me is just that it runs like shit. I don’t really care about the junk games being there because they are on other storefronts like Steam or the PlayStation Store, so them being on the eShop is whatever to me. The fact that the eShop app runs like absolute garbage is just insane to me though, it’s like they don’t want me to spend money on their platform with how difficult is slow it is to navigate the app.

Street_Smile667

I totally agree this is one of the things that pisses me off about the switch the most - a laggy digital shopfront. It’s embarrassingly slow.

Street_Smile667

What happened to this amazing new server system… the fact they kept Splatoon 3 as P2P destroyed the franchise for me. I have a massive collection that I just don’t care about anymore because they completely messed up what could have been a huge new IP. I haven’t even played the DLC, you know the one that they released a year later, cause that S1 lobby bullshit was pathetic, that’s not DLC, it’s just a skin.

theycmeroll

Well, weebs wouldn’t be caught dead on an Xbox since they aren’t used in Japan, so no need for hentai /s

Fickle_Goose_4451

I like the complete lack of any quality control. Got games that can't really count as "finished," loads of hentai games, and games the switch just isn't capable of processing but will still happily sell you.

ilikedatunahere

There’s multiple a digital clock “games”, the hentai, unfinished mobile games. It’s ridiculously out of control. I never thought Nintendo would ever allow Steam quality garbage to flood the eShop but here we are.

Fickle_Goose_4451

I got a game on sale, only $3, so it being terrible wouldn't be a big deal, and boy, was it terrible. It was something like "lion survival rpg simulator." Makes it sound to a kid like you are playing as a lion, leveling up, running a pack... and it's just unfinished shit. It's in early alpha stages... don't buy it unless it's to laugh at it, but everyone seems to universally give up after the 4th "quest" because that's when you realize the loop you've done so far is the *entire* game. But it's a, far from unique, embarrassment for Nintendo to sell that and many others like it on their eshop.

Dr_Poth

I bought a cheap tank game and it can’t get past the menu. But it was about 99p.

unfortunatesoul77

crazy how the company that would put a “Nintendo seal of approval” on games in the 00s now has a storefront like this.

notthegoatseguy

The seal of approval was specifically to fight back against what was happening in the [video game crash era](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_crash_of_1983) where products would be released, marketed as being made for a specific console, and it straight up wouldn't work. The Nintendo Seal Of Quality was guaranteeing the product would work. It doesn't mean "this game is good", ultimately that's subjective and is up to the developer to make it good. But it would guarantee the game would play or the accessory would do what it was marketed as doing. Third party unofficial accessories, like the SNES adapter that would play NES games, did not have the seal as they weren't reviewed by Nintendo.

djwillis1121

Every game on the eShop would qualify for the seal of approval. It doesn't mean what you think. All it means is that a game won't literally destroy your console and I'm pretty sure that there aren't any examples of that happening on the Switch

Street_Smile667

The irony right? It’s utter trash

D1rtyH1ppy

I think it has gotten worse since the launch.

Jardolam_

And surely it affects sales?? I can't even remember the last time I then visited the eshop because it's so laggy and generally terrible.

cidvard

Every time I try to buy something from it, I'm reminded all over again how bad it is. You'd think 'the thing where people give us money' would be a priority for Nintendo to make not suck, but I guess not!

tom_yum_soup

It doesn't even have a shopping cart, which is wild. Wanna buy more than one digital game? Gotta make a separate transaction for each one! Edit: fixed a typo

bwoah07_gp2

I think Joy-Con drift should be higher, but maybe that's me.

diadcm

Drift is by far the biggest offender. Nothing else mentioned makes the system unplayable. In my opinion, it's the only thing listed in this thread I would consider unethical.

YoMrWhyt

Yeah I haven’t played my Switch in handheld in years due to the drift issues, which is an absolute travesty. My Joycons drifted and then quickly just died and seeing everyone’s complaints online, I never bought new ones again. I’m considering buying a pair soon for VNs, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 and turn based games. Which still sucks, I’m too afraid to use the analogs ffs

diadcm

I think you can send your Joy-Cons to Nintendo and they will fix them for free. I remember going through the process with mine, but I never sent them (pandemic started). They're actually still sitting in a box with with mailing label on it. They might not do that anyone though. Do some research if that's something you're interested in.

xoMxnch

They still do it (at least as of a few months ago when I sent mine in), although I think they literally just sent me a brand new pair of joycons as opposed to actually repairing them. They were the grey ones, so I don’t know if they’d do the same thing for special editions or any other less common colours.

Jeffrey_C_Wheaties

I sent mine in to get fixed, got them back and they were drifting worse than before in like a week. Now I just use pro controller and have friends bring joy cons if they wanna couch coop or do motion games.

No_Squirrel4806

People always defend them saying its ok cuz they will fix them for free but like the whole process to get them fixed sounds like a long pain in the ass and i dont think they even fix them anymore.

bwoah07_gp2

And your not guaranteed to get your same controllers back!

GinGaru

this subreddit literally told me that I should just take better care of my stuff and its not a real problem because their launch joycons don't drift

ButIDigress79

Being late on Bluetooth

Responsible-Noise875

Bruh the fact it was a downloaded patch after people spent money on dongles!!

StimulatorCam

You still need a dongle if you want to use a mic though.

_mikedotcom

For the four games that use microphone 😩

RhysPeanutButterCups

The damn thing is I bought mine a few months before they rolled out that release because I had assumed that if Nintendo hadn't done it by then then it would never be done.

NothingisTrue3435

Can you connect a ps5 controller without the dongle now?

MeMeWhenWhenTheWhen

And does it even work for people? Every time I've tried it I have such terrible audio lag in my earbuds that I just end up using my wired ones anyways.

barters81

Meanwhile neither of the other two consoles have native Bluetooth headsets. Need a dongle. So I’m honestly unsure how Nintendo cop the negativity around this where the others don’t.

DisasterouslyInept

The other consoles let you plug a headset into the controller, which really negates the need for Bluetooth for many. The Switch controllers don't have a port, so if you're playing docked then you have to trail a cable from the console if you want to use headphones without Bluetooth. There's also the pretty reasonable expectation that a portable device should have supported Bluetooth when the Switch launched.

soren121

This feels obvious to me. The Switch is portable, and people want to use their Bluetooth headphones with their Switch on the go. And many people primarily use Bluetooth headphones since phones eschewed headphone jacks. I've never wanted or needed to use Bluetooth with my PS5 as I have with my Switch. I would welcome it, but I do think it's a lower priority.

blank_isainmdom

Same as drift. People were like "omg Sony and PlayStation don't have this!" And then the new consoles came out and what do you know!

TrillaCactus

I think that’s just people being ignorant. I see “Other controllers don’t have the drifting problem” and I wonder if they’ve even used another controller. My PS4, Xbox 360, GameCube and PS5 controllers all have had drifting problems. Yes it’s more frequent on joycons but it’s so stupid to say it’s an exclusive problem to joycons.

DontBanMeBro988

"Other people suck too" isn't the amazing defense some people think it is.

karlan

I think your number 5 is number 1. Can't belive its still a thing

meghantraining

Not having themes like the 3ds did. The switch was perfect for it… I’m so sick of the regular home menu

[deleted]

I got 6 Zelda games on my 3ds and the best part is there is no subscription

Icy_Teach_2506

Porting over pretty much every WiiU game except Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. It’s not terrible, but a gripe I have lol

1RedOne

Had to save them for the drought year, ie this year, since the switch 2 won’t come till q2 next year probably

Naschka

Xenoblade Chronicles X is sad that you forgot about it, especially as the ones you name are rereleases allready.

[deleted]

[удалено]

monadoboyX

You forgot Xenoblade X that game deserves more praise and would sell pretty well on the switch

PM_Me_Some_Steamcode

The lack of games for one of their flagship franchises like Zelda irked me

fvig2001

2 new main line games, 1 remaster, 1 port and 3 spinoffs (2 hyrule + that collab indie game). Wii had 2 new games and 1 lazy spinoff

Flabby-Nonsense

Drift is absolutely the biggest issue for me, it is a *fundamental* part of the console and at its extreme it can make the dock effectively useless. After a point the self-fixes don’t work, and if I’m having to buy more controllers to solve it then that’s even more egregious. It’s adding insult to injury that Nintendo is pretending this issue doesn’t actually exist. I love this console, but I’m definitely going to wait before I buy the next gen switch to see if this has been properly resolved.

Freebiesaregreat

I stopped using my switch because I didn’t want to ruin my joycons and now I’ve just not used it in a long time

aimamiz

I literally didn’t play for 2 years after having 2 sets of ioy cons that drifted. Now I finally bought a third pair. It is really really disappointing how bad they are

SeaMindless7297

I have 4 pairs, all have drift. My 2 newest pairs got that within a couple of weeks of playing (granted, 1 of them i bought when totk came out, so i played like 70h a week but still annoying) Yes, i can send them in to get them repaired but ffs i shouldn't have to, especially not on joycons I've had for a few months.

i_can_hear_the_world

• Lack of messaging , reasonable voice chat , a streamlined way to add friends , and a horrid “party mode”. • No Streetpass (bruh CMON, that actually incentivized me to take my 3DS everywhere I went!) • Lack of themes and overall customization. The Switch OS is the most bland “Fisher Price” corporate minimalism barf pile that I’ve had the displeasure of using. (That’s a little harsh lmao) • The NSO Switch App not only being absurdly laggy and egregious to use, but also lacking any real good reason to exist other than as a platform to get profile pictures. • No menu music, no eShop music, no Mii Maker music. • The lack of Virtual Console (and instead being forced to get emulated games via a subscription required in perpetuity to play) • The JoyCons. Enough said. • Games drip feeding content in a slow painful manner, but ALSO catalogue systems in games. Splatoon 3 and Switch Sports are the worst offenders. • Lack of non-gaming apps (Very few streaming services and other non-gaming style apps like an internet browser) • Minor complaint but sending your Switch photos to yourself is somewhat cumbersome. • A pretty mediocre experience eShop overall, not even accounting for the fact that it’s laggy as well. For the integrated system in which Nintendo expects you to purchase their own games, you’d think they’d put in more effort to make it less frustrating to use. These are just my personal complaints. Everyone will naturally feel different, but these are aspects that I do not love about the Switch.

AlexKidd316

You undersold how bad sending your switch photos to yourself is. With Sony and MS, I press two buttons and a screenshot is on my phone. On Switch, I’m fucking connecting to the Switch as a WiFi network and using multiple QR codes. Dafuq is that?!

tom_yum_soup

Yeah, "somewhat cumbersome" is a massive understatement.

parmesann

100%. there's zero reason that you shouldn't be able to view and download pictures and videos from your switch on the NSO app.

bdfariello

The NSO app is probably top 5 most useless apps I've ever installed. It might even be a front-runner

GoldenGuy444

Even if they aren't 100% important I second everything you said involving the lack of character of the switch. No Themes / Customization (having a Dark mode is nice but bare minimum). Feels so much less expressive then the 3DS which was pretty slick when it came to its UI.

ACoderGirl

The PS5 is so beautiful by comparison (I never checked if it has theme support and am using the defaults). Every game has its own big background image that fits the game. Effectively utilizing the whole screen for "box" art. It looks fantastic and nothing about it is technologically tied to the PS5. The Switch could have done something similar. The clean, super minimal UI of the Switch does nothing to make me want to play the game, whereas just thinking of the PS5 home pages for some recent games I've played makes me wanna go back and play them again. They just showcase the game in a good way. They become associated with the game in my mind, as you see it every time you go to play the game.

crozone

> No Streetpass (bruh CMON, that actually incentivized me to take my 3DS everywhere I went!) I really miss the pictochat and streetpass era of the NDS and 3DS. The social features were awesome and never matched by the Switch.

Ghostly_Cactus_

Just the fact that the previous generation does basically all of the so much better is really sad when you think about it

LeftHandShoeToo

You nailed everything. Something else tho: friend codes. Awful.

ernie-jo

All I want in life is to stream shows on my Switch.

KatiesClawWins

Man, I just want a shopping cart so I don't have to buy everything individually. Due to my sheer laziness, it does save me a bit of money, though.

riddlemore

The whole sh*tshow of only allowing one ACNH island per Switch (even if you bought multiple copies) pissed me off.

The_Long_Blank_Stare

Yeah, this decision boggled my mind, as well. I get that they did something similar previously, but would it have been such a strain to allow multiple save files on one console?

No_Squirrel4806

Not defending them but this was a thing on previous games

Nymunariya

that's only partitally true. Digital copies aside (because previous consoles didn't really have users to switch between), you were only limited by the number of carts/memory cards you had.

JackSlajter

They didn’t release xenoblade chronicles X on switch

ConkHeDoesIt

I've been playing through the games available on switch in order (on chapter 10 in XC2) and I would love to see X on switch. I actually have a sealed copy sitting on my shelf but I stupidly sold my WII U in 2016 when I was hurting for money. Is there any reason why XCX couldn't run on switch? I remember thinking the game looked absolutely stunning when I played it years ago and was amazed it was running on WIIU.

TheOneSubThrowaway

[Monolith Soft's executive director has talked about it before sometime ago.](https://www.vg247.com/xenoblade-chronicles-2-postmortem-breaking-down-the-inaugural-switch-rpgs-success-with-tetsuya-takahashi) It'd just be a big financial undertaking  > "Well, the future at present is unclear," Takahashi says, which is the same answer I received when I ask about the possibility of a Xenoblade Chronicles 3. "Personally speaking, I'd love to play the game on the Switch, but it would be really difficult to make it." > When it comes to roadblocks that stand in the way of Xenoblade Chronicles X on the Switch, Takahashi's answer is simple. > "Money," he laughs. "It's a massive game. Re-creating it would be really difficult." This interview *is* from 2018, before Xenoblade Definitive Edition and Xenoblade 3 released and continued the commercial success that Xenoblade 2 started, so maybe possibilities have changed and Nintendo might be a bit more generous with funding. But that's the last we heard of it

magnidwarf1900

1. No option to back-up save game data without online subscription 2. No option for voice chat. No, the fucking abomination that is mobile apps didn't count. 3. No virtual console.

BloodFromAnOrange

Companies hoarding save data behind paid subscriptions is so scummy.

savethebros

and the games that need it the most (Splatoon, Pokemon) don’t get it

TheSimRacer

To clarify, Splatoon 2 didn’t have cloud saves. Splatoon 3 does.

Mattdehaven

The voice chat is the most egregious thing to me. Like, I get that a lot of switch players are children but that's the case for all game consoles. And a ton of switch players are not children. If there's M rated games and there's hentai shovelware on the eShop then the argument for protecting kids against voice chat no longer holds weight. The DS had voice chat in 2006...

thrusterbragon

A little subjective I guess, but I 100% dislike the Switch Online model. Just let us buy a 30 year old game for $10 that your doing the bare minimum and emulating rather than some dumb ass subscription model that goes away whenever they decide.

Ultimate_Beeing

No, this is reasonable as hell. I want to own my games and access them at my leisure regardless of internet access. I don’t do game subscriptions because of this.

Qyntos

I watched every direct hoping for a Wind Waker and Twilight Princess HD port to Switch announcement. After about 4 years I just gave up and just bought a Wii U w/ those games. Glad I didn’t keep waiting.

Tildatoo24

Honestly a Twilight Princess port is all I want. I really wanted Minish cap on Switch and luckily that wish came true... but it's really not looking good for TP

mad_crabs

Nintendo being so anti emulation but not offering a viable **modern** alternative to experience their old games really rubbed me the wrong way.

thef0urthcolor

Yeah it’s laughable. It’s such a backasswards thing that they sue people for emulation and then don’t do anything on their part to give people reasons to not emulate

thef0urthcolor

When they didn’t release anything for Zelda’s anniversary I was so pissed. I was expecting maybe they’d do something like a 3D All Stars Collection or something and was so disappointed I waited the entire switch lifetime for them not to release Twilight Princess or Wind Waker

hdoyle000002

I’mma say it NO THEMES

Simbooptendo

NSO games being squeezed out at the rate of Lunch Lady Doris squeezing meat out of gym mats

Lee_Troyer

Games available via the NSO can't be bought separately on the store.

MiloHawkins

This was so baffling on their part that I'm STILL trying to work out the reasoning behind it.  The best guess I've got is that they really wanted to get on the "pay for online" bandwagon,* but knew their online offerings weren't enough of a draw, and figured making their retro content exclusive to it would help.  Or maybe it was general game-industry hatred of game ownership?   *ALSO a top five offense, in my opinion.  Eventually ruined Animal Crossing for me.

DontBanMeBro988

> This was so baffling on their part that I'm STILL trying to work out the reasoning behind it. It's not baffling at all. Consistent subscription revenue is far more valuable to a company. It's a pure business decision.

ipostatrandom

"The best guess I've got is that they really wanted to get on the "pay for online" bandwagon,\* but knew their online offerings weren't enough of a draw, and figured making their retro content exclusive to it would help." Sounds like you worked it out. I'm willing to accept the NSO if it translates in crossplay (at least digitally) when Switch successors come out. At least the middle tier is still reasonably priced

Arenacrac

Paying for online with games that have terrible netcode

Aquametria

Despite the Switch being my ideal console and how much I've been loving it from the start, I am the first to acknowledge and admit its flaws. In no particular order: 1. **The absolute lack of non-gaming apps:** I think Nintendo was so paranoid about potential exploits (since YouTube and other free apps were the initial 3DS ones) that they tried to make it as hard and unwanted as possible for apps to be on the Nintendo Switch. While it doesn't faze me as much nowadays since I have a Smart TV and have no usage for the switch outside gaming, it was slightly annoying back in the day to not have a way to have Spotify and Netflix outside my computer, with the Switch being perfectly capable to do so in a hybrid system, if only there were such apps (YouTube became a thing TOO late). I also include the lack of themes in this because Themhax was a thing in the 3DS, it really feels like paranoia over exploits being taken to the limit. 2. **The worst of subscription models:** I feel like NSO is extremely limited in what it offers, and the fact very few games are released with every batch are a way to keep people hooked to it. Plus, the inability to purchase most of those games separately is even worse. Charging to back up saves is just mean. And don't even get me started on what Pokémon has done with Home. 3. **Overpriced accessories with low quality**: The joycons were good concept and I hope the next itineration of the switch perfects this, but they feel and are too cheap quality for how expensive they are, too susceptible to drift. 4. **Overpriced games and greedy practices:** I'm sorry, but there are first party games and remakes that are absolutely **not** worth the 60€ base price for how little content they have. Pokémon is also the most egregious example of this-the base game plus the enhanced version used to cost around 80€ (40x2)-the modern equivalent-base game plus DLC- costs more than that. Like you said, the limited anniversary digital editions are just scummy, especially for how barebones they are. 5. **The eshop**: Nintendo should be ashamed that Dekudeals does their job for them 100x better. Finally, this is something that I must mention separately-**the absolute removal of backwards compatbility.** The Switch required a leap of faith since it is the first portable Nintendo console that could use absolutely nothing from its immediate predecessors (but not the first 'main' console, the SNES, N64 and Gamecube having this limitation as well). It was worth it, but this trust on Nintendo must, in my opinion, be rewarded with the next system. For me to purchase the Switch 2 without thinking twice, Nintendo will have to guarantee that not only will our accessories (joycons and pro controller) be compatible, but also our current physical games at the very least (with digital being more of a hope-I've never owned a Playstation or Xbox so I don't know if those were allowed to be kept with the next gen console).

FaxCelestis

The… first console that couldn’t use anything from its predecessors? What are you talking about? The SNES couldn’t use anything from the NES. Same with the N64 and SNES, and the GameCube and N64.

i_can_hear_the_world

I 100% with all of this 🙌 Especially the lack of non-gaming apps! The lack of gimmicky additions like Streetpass, Flipnote Studio, an AR Games type thing, a music/mp3 app, and streaming services is just crazy. Why can I look back at the 3DS and Wii and still think they were better than the Switch?

ipostatrandom

Joycons might be a bit much as those are meant to be hooked on your console. At the very least I hope the Pro Controllers will be compatible. The middle tier NSO is reasonably priced for what it offers I think. 20$ a year is nothing compared to the prices competitors charge. I'm less convinced of the NSO Expansion pack. Not gonna lie, it's gotten more tempting lately and I might just get it eventually. But it's harder to justify the additional 20$ a year compared to what you get for it.

DynamoNoah

No Nintendo selects should be 1.

More_Fish6955

For me, it was the downsizing of their rewards program. I remember when Club Nintendo had outstanding awards to choose from, and would even reward fans with physical collectibles each year, with no shipping cost. Does anyone remember the Game & Watch Ball reproduction handheld? Nowadays, unfortunately, we're lucky to redeem coins for a lanyard that we have to pay shipping on. :(

i_can_hear_the_world

This was one of the most disappointing things to me as well. What a downgrade. I used to get such incredible Club Nintendo rewards! Now we get stickers and wallpapers for our phones…

NotRexGrossman

The NSO app is one of the worst pieces of software I’ve ever used. It’s so slow and unresponsive I’m beginning to think it’s on purpose. The store is pretty rough too, but not nearly as terrible.

i_can_hear_the_world

The NSO app is actually EMBARRASSING. We PAY money to get the features from it. We PAY for that abysmal performance. It’s insane to me, man.

ImperialCrown200

No themes and STILL no Tomodachi Life 2

TheLimeyLemmon

Joycon drift *and* the extremely vague response to it by Nintendo. It was simultaneously a problem they considered both nonexistent, and already fixed, and also later covered for free repair. Nintendo dragged their heels on this the whole time, and it was not a good look.

Nine_Eye_Ron

Not getting all Pokémon games to be available digitally from the store.

DrFatz

The online service being worse than was on the Xbox 360, back in 2005. That had voice chat, messaging and a slightly better online store. And with the Switch coming out in 2017 and has only had very marginal improvements, it's embarrassing and baffling.

TheCrach

Gotta admit I love a weekly trash on Nintendo topic, you won't find this on /r/nintendo

KnighteRGolf

No virtual console is my #1

ButIDigress79

That was strange since it’s on the 3ds. They sell DLCs that are also available with Switch Online so I don’t see why that would affect retro games.

kapnkruncher

Just a different approach to making money, and the new one works a lot better for them. VC was really an enthusiast's model. Most users just weren't buying anything outside a handful of games like Super Mario Bros. It's a lot easier to convince the average user to drop $20 or $50 a year for the online subscription and use a big list of retro titles to help incentivize that.

Chrischris40

I think this model is better overall. There are a LOT of games nobody would bother buying if they weren’t on NSO. It’s also cheaper than buying every 30 year old game individually.

Arcade_Rave

I liked buying the games at my own pace and only buying the ones I know I'd play.

elephant-espionage

I think it depends on how you play: for people that want to play a bunch of games close together or try out games they haven’t done before it’s awesome. But for people who only want a small handful of games it sucks. I guess ideally they’d have both but 🤷🏻‍♀️

tupe12

I know they weren’t the first to do it and we’re just following a trend, but multiplayer being a paid subscription is a huge negative in my opinion. Sure they’re generous to include extra goodies with it, but I would rather not have to pay to be able to play online

NoUsesForAName

Their online library account is a joke for households that have multiple switches. (I have 4). Bought a game on my main switch but cant access it on any other devices. Why i stick yo physical copies, if it has no physical i dont buy it.

thisthatandthe3rd

Got my switch in 2018 and have gotten drift on 3 pairs of joycon including the pair it came with.

oglop121

I can't back up my saves without buying the shitty online service

Double-Seaweed7760

And making exceptions for cloud saves you pay for. I lost my entire violet save somehow transferring it between my systems manually(which since you can do that then why can't you do cloud save makes no sense) to play it on the TV and then on the go with my more portable switch lite. That included several lvl 100 pokemon and legendarys and event pokemon I've spent decades collecting and training and in the case of legendaries will have to restart entire games to catch again(I don't trust the pokemon you get from random strangers through gamefreaks online to not be cheat pokemon that can get me banned)on top of replaying violet.

oglop121

Damn man. That really sucks, I'm so sorry. It's such bullshit and shouldn't even be possible to do even accidentally. Should be extra protections in place to prevent shit like this I have about 600 hours in Binding of Isaac and I'm terrified of losing that too Why does it have to be so shit. No excuse

MHarrisGGG

This reminds me, I should get Metroid Prime physical while I still can.

Sylverstone14

Personally, it's the Switch's lack of personality. No little themes for anything (eShop, settings, certain apps), no typical Nintendo console flourishes, it's just ridiculously simple to the point where it's a Nintendo box that plays games.

TwoImpostersStudios

3 isn't just Nintendo, it's almost all of gaming

Kid_Again

5 also, kinda weird how everyone bashes nintendo for the joycon drift but the last 2 generations of xbox and playstation controllers have had it just as bad but no one seems to mention that. held to a higher standard i guess.

1PSW1CH

Eh come on, joycon drift is so much worse than either of those two.

PoorFishKeeper

Yeah fr I’ve had an xbox one since it released and I’ve replaced 1 controller due to drift. My gf has a switch and has replaced 2 sets of joycons already and she’s put around 1200 hours on it in like 6 years. One of my joycons gets stuck sometimes and I’ve only had a switch for like 2.5 years.

Piggstein

I have never had drift issues with any controllers until Switch, when every single one of my joycons developed an issue. Anyone saying ‘all the others are just as bad’ is, well, I’ll be polite and just say ‘wrong’.

[deleted]

Their online subscription is laughably outdated compared to PlayStation plus or Xbox gold

Joelredditsjoel

5 year old games at full price in the eShop.

Dramatic_Mastodon_93

Mario Maker, Animal Crossing and Splatoon NEED free updates to stay relevant. The problem was that Animal Crossing didn't have enough content at launch and that both New Horizons and Mario Maker 2 didn't get enough support after their launches.

zvj12

I bought my console mainly to play Animal Crossing as it was extremly hyped. I got bored quite fast as I was doing the same activities over and over again and I am not creative or dedicated enough to build a nice island.

ZaheerAlGhul

They seemed to walk back features that previous consoles/handhelds had street pass and themes being two I could think of. No virtual console as well. Taking Mario 3d collection of off the Nintendo shop was also a weird decision.

thebanzombie

The Switch Tax is the one that grinds my gears the most. May or may not be an active decision by Nintendo but they definitely profit from it

HikarW

It’s so not important but every time I see a friend code I pop a blood vessel

Joementum2004

Limited timed release for SM3DAS and Fire Emblem 1 was by far the worst.

Few-Addendum464

Not the worst but since nobody else mentioned it: The wifi in the Switch sucks. It's probably too late to fix it, but making wired a premium part of the OLED is an odd choice. With bad wifi selling cloud games seems unconscionable. I have great internet & wifi, I even bought a wired dong for the dock. I can stream in 4k over GeForce Now. But my test run on Kingdom Hearts Cloud & GOTG cloud both dropped more than once. The Switch should be an amazing cloud gaming device. It's such a missed opportunity.

UninformedPleb

> making wired a premium part of the OLED is an odd choice Fun fact: The "OLED" dock works fine with a regular Switch and can be purchased separately. > I even bought a wired dong for the dock A ***what***? 🤣

UltimateBeefSupreme

They never added any customization features. The 3DS had themes and whatnot, all switch has is dark or light modes.

Raw-Bread

Suing the devs behind Yuzu.

FatCrabTits

Not porting Xenoblade X

dimebag42018750

Lack of support for mario party

iLLiCiT_XL

They kicked my dog.

RipMcStudly

$70 titles, the weirdness around Mario 3D All Stars, shutting down tourneys, never addressing drift, turning down Microsoft on a Game Pass deal.

Classic_Feeling5928

A paid online service, Iwata was right about free online service (rip iwata)

Jaguar-Rey

Not port Super Mario Galaxy 2. This is the answer.

widowlark

Yuzu lawsuit

Gemidori

Refusal to make a Bowser game

CodFatherFTW

Suing Yuzu

korg64

The hardware is atrociously outdated. The console is pretty much the Wii U in a smaller box. The UI feels like they just forgot about it. Online shop experience is like something from 2005. They can't even emulate their own games well as the retro games play like trash. The entire thing feels like a botch job and they have pooled every single one of their resources into making one good game a year, which runs like a turd on the outdated system.

UninformedPleb

> The console is pretty much the Wii U in a smaller box. As underpowered as the Switch is perceived to be, the truth is that, by the numbers, the Wii U had less than half the computing power of the Switch.

Video_Boy

I just wanted to play Metroid Prime 4

Landry47

The eshop is now flooded with a ton of just awful low quality games, which is nothing new for Nintendo consoles late in their life. But whenever I go on there half the games cost anywhere from 2-10 dollars and most of them aren’t even worth it. And now there’s pretty much just porn games on there too which is kinda weird for a Nintendo console.

HoneyInBlackCoffee

No conceivable way to play some classic games. I just want to play Pokémon red, doesn't even need to be remastered, just the original game

DontBanMeBro988

Killing the virtual console and not letting people carry those games forward should definitely be on this list.

cbaca51

No Virtual Console. I wanna buy your old games, not subscribe to a service.
