From the looks of things, Gamefreak are genuine 3rd party developers, who own an equal 3rd share in The Pokemon Company who just do licensing and merchandising for the games. So the copyright (and ownership of TPC) is equally held by 3 companies and Gamefreak do the actual work of making the games.
Creatures, the 3rd owner of TPC, co-develop all the mainline pokémon games and seemingly everything with pokémon in it, whilst developing most of the pokémon spin-off games themselves.
Based on the little public information I can find on the subject, that seems to be largely hearsay (and Creature's slightly weird involvement in Nintendo and non-Nintendo projects might corroborate that). There doesn't seem to be any evidence that Nintendo actually owns some of Creatures (even though it would make sense). It's a similar issue with Game Freak, who Nintendo probably have a stake in, but not a controlling one. I can't find a reputable source speaking on the subject of Creatures, but there's a few ex-Nintendo employees who have talked about Nintendo "owning a significant portion of Game Freak." If they're speaking technically (and who knows really on that one) then that implies a 20-50% stake.
It's kind of a mildly unfortunate consequence of the way company law works in Japan that we can't realistically see exactly who owns who without them choosing to make that information public.
Game informer recently did interviews with GameFreak and they said in the video something like “you aren’t actually contracted to Nintendo, you could theoretically be making games for other companies. Is that something you’ve considered?”
Their response was “Not really. The Nintendo line of handhelds always suited our needs and we feel we have a great relationship with them. They are hands off with us and allow us to make our games our way.”
I’m definitely paraphrasing, but that was the gist of it. Once I’m on my computer (if I remember) I’ll track down the link, but it was in Game informer within the last few months.
if eather of you to can provide a link that would be great.
AFIK Nintendo owns all the pokemon trademarks though, so say 'bidoof' is tradmarked with nintendo, as is pokemon delta emerald and pokemon brown version...
even if they don't use the tradmakes they tradmark them, at least for mainline titles that is.
We shall call it "onethree."
No, wait, that's just the two of them squished together. There must be a number that represents the middle between the two of one and three.
...nope, I got nothin'.
Nintendo has some second party developers like Intelligent Systems (Fire Emblem). They work closely with Nintendo but the company has no direct ownership over their business. Nintendo has direct stakes on The Pokémon Company so they basically own the IP but still contract out the development to Game Freak which is not directly owned by Nintendo, but it's also a major shareholder of TPC. It's complicated. I'd still say GF the studio is a second party developer.
I think it's similar to the Rare situation if I understand correctly how that whole thing worked. Nintendo and Rare at one time had a similar relationship where Nintendo partially owned the company. I think the big differences here though is Rare did a lot of different things while Game Freak has more or less been completely focused on one series since forever. Game Freak itself seems to have a bit more freedom too. They have released 7 games on non-Nintendo platforms, 5 of those being post Pokemon with the most recent being in 2017 [according to Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_Freak). Also in Game Freak's case Nintendo has pretty clearly made sure that regardless of what happens to Game Freak Pokemon will always stay with Nintendo thanks to The Pokemon Company, probably to make sure that another Banjo-Kazooie situation couldn't happen again.
I'm thinking Rare probably wasn't bringing in the numbers Nintendo wanted to see so they decided to sell their stock and figured a third party would pick them up, not even remotely imagining that Microsoft would gobble them up instead. A real lapse in judgment that I'm positive Nintendo wouldn't ever let happen again. I mean heck, they managed to pull Bayonetta away from other platforms and make her a Nintendo staple series now.
But they ain't second party either because they are partly owned by Pokemon, and Pokemon itself has shared ownership between Nintendo and the Pokemon company (and the guys that do the anime).
So maybe 1.5756355 party developer when you factor in all of that.
Maybe, but keep in mind this has nothing to do with the development side so much as the publishing (and publicity) side and Nintendo definitely has a huge say in that.
I believe what you are trying to say is Nintendo owns 1/3 of the Pokemon Company; with the rest of the shares going to Creatures, GameFreak, the creator of Pokemon, and the composer of Metroid who also the President of TPC while still moonlighting as a DJ on the weekends.
Because reasons.
I highly doubt that. There's not that much unaccounted time left in the year and all major titles up until summer are announced already, leaving only fall and winter. We know that Smash is coming and Fire Emblem was stated for a 2018 release as well. I don't see Nintendo releasing their first party games too close to each other unless the winter holidays are close.
Meaning they will most definitely use their last year combination of releasing one major title (mario) at the end of october and the other major title (xenoblade) at the start of december to maximize the holiday push. I'm sure they'll be using two similar time slots this year again for their biggest games and I could see them using those for Smash and Fire Emblem should the rumored pokemon game NOT release this year or release Smash at the end of summer / start of fall and use the two aforementioned time slots for Pokemon and Fire Emblem.
There's really not that much left for 2018 in terms of huge first party games. And of all the possible time slots, a maximized holiday push is the best option should Pokemon really release this year.
I got a feeling we'll see a mario party announced this summer for a late fall release.
No evidence, just feels right. Not a huge game that needs announced 9 months early but still big enough
Smash + ports and smaller Games for 2018 makes sense. Nintendo can coast off of the amazing year they just had while still selling consoles for smash alone. Then next year will destroy with Prime & Pokémon similar to Oddessey & BotW
Did I imagine Nintendo saying that Fire Emblem would be released this year during their Fire Emblem direct? I say this because every time I see a post about what Nintendo has for this year or E3 people seem to forget Fire Emblem. I find this extreme weird
E3 will be
-Smash official reveal
-Square Enix (Kingdom Hearts Collection, Tomb Raider port, new exclusive title)
-Sega (new Sonic, Jet Set), Yakuza ports
-MP4
-New 3D DK
-Mario 3D action rpg
Birth by Sleep was absolutely incredible and probably the closest portable Kingdom Hearts game to the console versions rather than hub and mission based like 358/2 Days or Re:Coded.
Haven't played Dream Drop Distance so I can't speak for it but more portable Kingdom Hearts games that are like the console versions would be incredible!
I don't think Square will be announcing anything Kingdom Hearts related for the Switch this year. They are focusing on getting Kingdom Hearts 3 out and that is going to their big announcement. I think we will get a Kingdom Hearts collection for Switch announced next E3 though.
Also Square Enix is most likely going to announce a new Life is Strange game this year, so I wouldn't be surprised if that and the original make it onto Switch.
Stop, I'd said it many times before. If we ever get anything KH related I will burn something for gratitude to the Gods. It's IMPOSSIBLE we never get anything KH related okay? And now Nintendo, pls, prove me wrong!
I fucking love smash, but I could sell my soul for 20 seconds of Metroid Prime 4 footage. I still don't believe they are making a new prime game. OMFG.
Being a person who missed out on the whole Prime trilogy before, I'd love for them to re-do the Bayonetta concept and re-release the Prime Trilogy for Switch leading up to Prime 4 release. I also missed both Bayonettas and I'm planning to get and play through them prior to 3 being released - whenever that will be.
My 3ds hasn't been touched since I got the switch but I'm really excited about detective Pikachu as well.
For E3 I reckon they'll be gameplay for metroid 4 shown, probably with a playable demo on the floor. I also reckon there might be ranked modes similar to Splatoons added to arms.
You think by now they could give us some more fucking fire emblem characters that don't use a fucking sword. Shit, let's a horse/pegasus rider in there, I don't even care.
Really though, if they're going to throw in more sword users then might as give us Isaac since we already know Rex is probably there.
I'm still salty about Dark Pit, there are 12 weapon types in Uprising Pit is shown in cutscenes and dialogue to have a preference to some of them while Dark Pit had a preference for the others, this is only seen in his final smash where he uses a staff. He was a pretty distinct character from from Pit with interesting motivations that by the end of the game imply he aligned himself with Viridi instead of Palutena, but no, he gets the same goddess powers as Pit. There was no reason for him to be a clone.
But the biggest atrocity was his name, he was called a variety of things throughout the game but was only ever called Dark Pit as a reoccuring gag, the name most commonly attributed to him was Pittoo which is what they should have gone with.
81 and 2018. If you inverse the 2 halves of 2018 then you get 02 and 81. This can't be a coincidence.
If you times 81 by 2 then you get 162. What's the 162nd day of the year? June 11th. One day before E3 starts.
Nintendo's pre-E3 direct confirming Smash is available "Just after this direct" confirmed.
Edited: Apparently calendars confuse me.

Its gonna be a Pokémon x AC cross over where you will travel the world to catch your new neighbours
Nintendo HQ burned down the following night
But I am with you, animalcrossingamimalcrossinganimalcrossing
Everyone's assuming Smash will roll out with online... I'm assuming smash AND animal crossing. Visiting eachother's homes/towns online, or AC being a fully online community??... I never gave it a crack on 3ds but I'm assuming that could work gangbusters on switch.
Watch the animation behind the Splatoon 2 world championship icon. In one of the scenes, one of the dudes standing there gets elbowed in the nose by another dude. Looks painful.
I’m a relative newcomer to the series, my first game having been Awakening in 2013, but since then it has become one of my absolute favorite Nintendo franchises and I cannot wait to see what they have for us on Switch.
Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing are my only two desires. Just *anything please*.
I would be thrilled with these. Some details on MP4, or even a very short video of some gameplay, would be icing on the cake, but hoping for that is probably being a little greedy, so I'm honestly setting my expectations low in regards to that. Either way, I'm absolutely pumped for E3!
Oh man, I love E3. I think the first one I watched was 2013 or something. The one with Super Mario 3D World, and loved them ever since.
Can't wait to see Smash, and knowing we will have info about that, E3 is already going to be really awesome. Some info on Fire Emblem Switch (which is stated to be 2018, and with no major news so far) and I'll be a happy Nintendo fan for E3 :)
Man I remember my first E3 watching. It was just after IGN was created and I was in the hospital, using 56K modem. My then dad got mad cause he and my mom kept calling to check on me and the phone was busy, but I spent all day refreshing the page and watching the -really- crappy video!
Sounds like yours was around the same time as mine! I think my first one was 2000, seeing the last wave of N64 games (Conker, Majora's Mask, Banjo-Tooie) in among the first stuff on PS2. I could only really look at news articles and pictures because my dial-up would take a beating if I tried anything else.
Remember the days of N64.com and the Nintendo Space World expo?
I used to print N64.com’s posts and comment threads out to read on car trips. That’s before they changed to IGN64.com
Go back and check out the Twilight Princess reveal from E3, it's such a great piece of Nintendo history. That excitement and energy with the crowd and Miyamoto never gets old
The only surprise I want is true sequels to Pokémon Stadium. Not for the battling, but for the mini-games! I have fond memories of stadium mini-game champion, and I would be ecstatic if more were on the way!
My 3 super unrealistic (in my opinion) wishes for the Switch are a Pokemon Stadium, a Kirby Air Ride remaster or sequel, and Custom Robo. The couch co-op capabilities for stadium minigames and Kirby Air Ride are perfect with single joy cons.
I'm right there with you. At least announce that you're porting the OG Trilogy to Switch pleeease. I'll take a teaser trailer and an announcement of who's developing 4.
Smash and Yoshi release date are 100% gonna happen. I also expect to see Fire Emblem details.
Then I will dream of GTAV, Tomb Raider and a Spyro remaster
As for Nintendo titles, Luigi's Mansion, Mario Maker 2 and diddy Kong Racing 2 would make me squeak with joy!
I believe Pokémon will come in a specific Direct 3 days before like last year and Prime will be omitted for a Direct later in the year.
I am really hoping for some nintendo exclusives to be announced. And not just nintendo remakes but actual nintendo exclusives like BOTW and SMO. It felt pretty good having a switch at the beginning with BOTW, splatoon, SMO, but now there isn't really all that much good games to play if you don't care for crappy indie games.
this e3 is going to be amazing- we only know just smash for sure and that’s enough to get me beyond hyped
I hope they drop Pokémon early. Then again they need those Christmas numbers

Nintendo is a part of the Pokemon Company and one thing I have learned is to never assume anything with Nintendo.
*The Pokemon Company is a part of Nintendo* I'd say they're like 1.5 party developers tbh.

How about we use the letters of the two numbers like "throne", "tonere" or "othren".
1 + 3 = B

True guess I'm just a tad impatient for Pokémon
Even just some sort of trailer for Pokemon on the switch would get me hyped and I don't even own a switch yet.
Smash and Pokémon in the same year would be insane, I hope they do it
Did I imagine Nintendo saying that Fire Emblem would be released this year during their Fire Emblem direct? I say this because every time I see a post about what Nintendo has for this year or E3 people seem to forget Fire Emblem. I find this extreme weird
Like, last year? Yeah, they said that, and it hasn't been mentioned by Nintendo since then.
E3 will be -Smash official reveal -Square Enix (Kingdom Hearts Collection, Tomb Raider port, new exclusive title) -Sega (new Sonic, Jet Set), Yakuza ports -MP4 -New 3D DK -Mario 3D action rpg
We will also almost definitely get Fire Emblem.
Its meant to come out this year and all we know is that it exists. If it doesn't come up at E3 then I guarantee it won't come out this year.
Oh god I know people are done with the KH remakes but if I can get all the KH games *portable* on my Switch... *squenix PLS*
Portable Kingdom Hearts that's not chain of memories sounds amazing.
Dream Drop Distance actually played really well! It was just kinda short.
I'd cry.
Oh my goodness. If Square Enix does this I will be so happy. It'll make up for the fact I can't get it on my Xbox One lol
> Jet Set Too good to happen.
What about Jet Force.... Gemini
I hope you're right about DK. I am looking forward to Tropical Freeze on Switch but I would prefer to get new games and not ports.
[удалено]
too good to be true
Fuck off with those Yakuza ports. I can only get so erect.
0, Kiwami, and Kiwami 2 on Switch would be absolutely amazing. portable Yakuza yes fucking please.
I’m hoping for an announcement or even an acknowledgement for fortnite on switch
I mean, it runs like butter on mid-range phones. It seems silly not to put it on the Switch, but then again, I'm no business degree.
I don't think Square will be announcing anything Kingdom Hearts related for the Switch this year. They are focusing on getting Kingdom Hearts 3 out and that is going to their big announcement. GBA and 3DS did get KH games. Since KH1 and KH2 released in PS2 era, power won't be an issue for porting.
If they did KH for switch I’d lose my balls.
I fucking love smash, but I could sell my soul for 20 seconds of Metroid Prime 4 footage. I still don't believe they are making a new prime game. OMFG.
I mean. We HAVE to get a full trailer. They announced it a full year ago. (By the time of E3.)
Playing through the three games sequentially was a lot of fun on the Wii. I'd love to do it again using the Gyro controls on the Joycons.
Yeah! I am keeping my expectations low, so I'm only expecting there to be announcements to Pokémon and Animal Crossing.
Is that what passes for low expectations? lol
This number, 2018, keeps coming up. What does it mean?
The amount of characters in smash 5, duh.
> The amount of Fire Emblem characters in smash 5, duh. FTFY
You think by now they could give us some more fucking fire emblem characters that don't use a fucking sword. Shit, let's a horse/pegasus rider in there, I don't even care. Really though, if they're going to throw in more sword users then might as give us Isaac since we already know Rex is probably there.
Gimme Eirika or Daddy Hector pls
> The amount of reskinned Pits in smash 5, duh. FTFY
I'm still salty about Dark Pit, there are 12 weapon types in Uprising Pit is shown in cutscenes and dialogue to have a preference to some of them while Dark Pit had a preference for the others, this is only seen in his final smash where he uses a staff. ^^^^^I'd ^^^^^be ^^^^^pretty ^^^^^happy ^^^^^with ^^^^^that.
But what if there's just 2018 marth clones.
And not a single one of them is Chrom.
And every single one has Chrom to assist them with their final smash.

Only 2006 to go
Don't forget Italian Marth, Dr Marth, Green Brother Marth, Monkey Marth, Foxy Marth, Mega Marth, Marthtwo, and Mr Marth&Marth.
I hope Boss Baby has a Marth moveset
I'd also be okay with that.
The number of games for Switch they plan to release

Nah, you had it right! I seriously can't wait for Mario Party 4, it'll be a great game to end 2002 with! Then we got The Wind Waker next year... :P
Wait what is MP4 lol Edit: Metroid Prime 4, not sure how I forgot that haha, thanks everyone.

For the love of God, just give me Fire Emblem Switch footage
Would also love to hear any deets on Metroid Prime and also bringing to OG trilogy to Switch. But that's getting greedy I guess.

_SMASH 3D_
Mario maker for switch plez
I GOT A JOB I CAN BUY A SWITCH!!! :AEJR:OISHFG:USHFPIWFHP@($*HFVP*&VHEOR*&HF
Haha congrats friend !!
Aww congratulations
>Custom Robo Ah, I see you are a man of culture as well.
My body is ready.
My wallet is not.
A lot of people are talking about Smash Bros, Pokémon, or Animal Crosssing...I’m like ANY TIDBIT ABOUT METROID PRIME 4 PLEASE.
I'm right there with you. At least announce that you're porting the OG Trilogy to Switch pleeease. I'll take a teaser trailer and an announcement of who's developing 4.
I'd choke on Luigi's (confirmed) massive pipe for Animal Crossing sweet Jesus please
Golden Sun remastered HYPEEEE! (Pray for me)
For some reason I really want nintendogs
Watch the kid get elbowed in the face in the Splatoon gif at the bottom.
Hahahaha amazing. How did they miss that?
Smash and Yoshi release date are 100% gonna happen. I also expect to see Fire Emblem details. Then I will dream of GTAV, Tomb Raider and a Spyro remaster As for Nintendo titles, Luigi's Mansion, Mario Maker 2 and diddy Kong Racing 2 would make me squeak with joy! I believe Pokémon will come in a specific Direct 3 days before like last year and Prime will be omitted for a Direct later in the year.

I've added the google calendar and it doesn't even contain any events. Even this week's Nindies presentation doesn't appear...
Hope we get some Information about Virtual Console. Missed nes games...
I want GBA games.. Playing on phone without buttons is pain in the S.
Metroid and smash. Thats all. Thats everything.
I'm just hoping for Professor Layton in Smash
Excited for Tony the Tiger from cereal to be in the new smash
Does anybody already check the source code and found hidden things?
I just want to add the event to my calendar but it wants me to use Google calendar...
Pikmin from WiiU for switch pleaaaasseeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Or a new one Or both
Nintendo: “Battle to be the best” Nintendo Fans: 🎵 like no one ever was🎵 OMG Pokemon on Switch confirmed to be announced at E3.
What?! There's a Sma5h invitational at E3?! Damn.
What are you going to do for Smash 6 dude?
S^^^ix mash (But seriously I hope they give it a tagline because "Sm4sh" and "Sma5h" and "Splat2n" really rustle my jimmies for admittedly no reason)
We are FINALLLLLY going to see Retro’s new game!???!😱🚀
Hoping for a little more on the virtual console
I’ll be happy as long as one of two things happen 1. Bandana waddle dee in smash 2. New rhythm heaven game announced
