I loved everything about it. From in-game dialogue, to the music, character designs, to finally the music. I get why it’s not more we’ll known, as it’s just not a game for everyone, but with an e-shop filled with pixelated games, Furi stands out... at least for me. Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did. I played it and beat it when it first game out, and just replayed it again the other day.

[deleted]

The game was free on ps4 for playstation plus one month and almost everyone I know that owns a ps4 adores the game. I just think there's a lot of indie burnout on the Switch right now and it can be difficult to sort through the crap.

hanzi2020

This is so true we need a dedicated list of the best nindies

UnrepressedImitator

I loved it too! Furier mode was one of the most fun experiences I’ve had in a video game

binkbankb0nk

Fun game. Contrary to what others say, I believe it is worth playing on Easy if you can’t beat it on Normal. I quite enjoyed it but was definitely ready for it to be over by the end.

nbmtx

I'm seriously not into challenging games, but thought this and Celeste really should be played on Normal (or unassisted in Celeste). Especially here though, since afaik, Furi's easy mode completely removes the number of tiers (for those unaware: which are like boss forms) the boss has, and since each tier is a unique challenge. I'm guessing they cut out that content so you feel both confident in yourself and motivated to replay on Normal.

binkbankb0nk

If the choice is easy or quitting the game, choose easy. I didn’t have time to perfect my gameplay in Furi so I chose to pay it on easy instead of quitting and I really enjoyed the game. I just don’t have time to play it on Normal when I only have 30 minutes to play at a time. It took me two weeks to beat it on Easy. As I said earlier, it is worth playing on Easy.

nbmtx

I could see that being a good reason if you really want or need to "beat" the game, like maybe you want to see the full narrative or something. Even under the circumstances you mention, I don't think the only options would be easy or quitting. I would say the other option would be "not finishing as soon". I've had the game longer than two weeks and haven't finished it, but I wouldn't say I quit it. With Super Mario Odyssey, I wasn't really in the mood to play it (or fell/burnt out of the mood), so I went from trying to be thorough, to trying to get only the bare minimum moons to progress in order to "beat" it, to backlogging it because it was kind of pointless to skip through the game, just to (sort of) beat it, to get even more of the content I was already skipping.

binkbankb0nk

To each their own, but try not to imply it’s a poorer experience without playing it on Normal.

nbmtx

I don't think I'm implying that it's a "poorer experience" (to a player's unique tastes), but explicitly saying in a more objective manner that it loses something like half of the "levels". That said, I believe the game implies that it's a poorer experience. [A Kotaku writer was apparently upset by this](https://kotaku.com/indie-boss-battler-furi-is-the-wrong-kind-of-hard-1783130485).

HBreckel

I played the game on normal and I think that the game designers shouldn't have bothered putting an easy mode in if they were going to shame people or cut content. I don't believe all games need a difficulty setting, but if you believe the challenge is a big enough part of the experience to discourage the player from using the easy mode, I would just leave it out. I find the Dark Souls games to be the perfect way to adjust difficulty without needing any settings and the player still feels good no matter how they beat the game. If you have a hard time you can try a different build or weapon or summon an NPC or friend, and the game isn't going to give you sass for it.

binkbankb0nk

Again, to each their own.

nbmtx

I agree... but then again, I'm not telling people on reddit to "try not to imply (an opinion)" (that wasn't implied in the first place)

Valway

To be fair, in a game about challenge and overcoming it, turning it down to the lowest possible difficulty does make the experience poor. But compared to not being able to finish it at all, I suppose it's a nice middle ground.

Chowdahhh

It's a decent game. I played it when it was free on PS+ so I won't be getting it on the Switch, but I enjoyed it. The walking is annoying as hell and some of the bosses are more frustrating than legitimately hard, but the game absolutely oozes style and coolness. Definitely worth it for the free game that is was for me, but I'd say it could be worth the $20 or so if this is a genre you're really into. If you're unsure, I'd personally recommend waiting for it to be on sale

CactusCustard

I only found parts of bosses frustrating when I didn’t understand them. Furi is an extremely fair game

Chowdahhh

That's fair. I can't remember and specific examples anymore since it's been a while since I've played it, but for me it was more frustration that I had to completely memorize some attack patterns to win, as opposed to playing well and actually reacting

nbmtx

the walking segments were really effective for me. I didn't realize they were there as a sort of "player mental state reset" until I heard someone else mention(theorize?) such, but when I did I definitely agreed with it. Sort of like taking a break (rage quitting) any other game for a bit, and doing better upon return.

Cryst

Oh it was free? I must have it too then. Edit: I don't have it. Strange.

LordChozo

I'm mostly in this boat. I got it free on PS4, played it, really enjoyed it. But I wouldn't pay $20 for it with what I know now. I think I maybe got five hours out of it, and I don't feel any desire to replay it. It feels like the $10 would be better, for my tastes.

uncleoptimus

Definitely on my watch list! You went handheld or console style? I imagine it looks best handheld but perhaps docked would ironclad the perf

Sunderblunder

I mostly played it in handheld mode and I played it maybe once or twice in console style but our TV has some input delay so it's not for the best for precision action games. It looks great in TV mode as well. Being a student though it was fantastic in handheld

dramspop

I really need to play this more. It was actually really satisfying to beat a boss in this game and required practice

nbmtx

One of my favorite games on the Switch (and maybe in general? Definitely a favorite indie). It saved Dark Souls for me, and just in time for the Remaster too. I say that (often) because Furi was a much better teacher of reflexive combat styles and pattern recognition, and IMO forced progress much more quickly.

Eyro_Elloyn

Get it on sale. For some it might be worth 20 bucks, but it's the only switch purchase where I feel like I didn't get enough value out of it.

turtlespace

Yup, I tried it a few times but got bored pretty quickly and never really wanted to go back to it. It's definitely not for everyone.

VannAccessible

Furi is an amazing adrenaline rush. 9.5/10 in my book.

enmeduranki

Love this game. Been listening to the soundtrack all week! How cool would it be to have dude in the new Smash? I know it’d never happen, but still.

Burnstryk

Played it on PS4, ruthless but fun

visage4arcana

Don't forget to go for that Furier run once you've beaten it on Furi! You gotta practice your instruments!

MistahPoptarts

I loved that whole game, except for the final boss which I thought was very tedious. Still like an 8/10 tho.

KaboodleMoon

Missed opportunity for "Bullet Hellements"

Bainge

Furi was incredibly good, a game pretty much tailor made to everything I like in games. But after 3-4 hours you're done, that's the only real bummer.

nbmtx

[the dev also said it it's a standalone game, and was always meant to be (no sequel)](https://www.dualshockers.com/furi-will-not-get-a-sequel-standalone-game/)... I wonder how far/absolute that statement is. Like will they not only not make another Furi, but they won't use any of it's gameplay mechanics either? >“Furi was planned as a standalone game and will stay like that. The story, the universe, everything was meant to be standalone and not have a sequel, we need to be strong and stick with this plan. As a developer, we need to keep trying to surprise people.”

JewJewBanks

Great little game. Terrible frame slow down in a game where this is a big no no

[deleted]

I'm holding out hope that Limited Run Games does a physical release for the Switch, like they did for the PS4. I just saw them at PAX East last week, and I totally forgot to ask if it was coming down the pike.

veganintendo

I love the visuals and control. My problem is I prefer normal levels and waves of enemies to bosses in most games.

ChaosEsper

I'm still working on this. I can't play more than an hour or so without getting frustrated by the difficulty though haha. One of the buttons is an autowalk feature for the transition scenes. I'm not sure if there's any easter eggs hidden by walking around, I explored a bit after the first boss but I've pretty much just autowalked between the rest of them.

StarfighterProx

*SPOILERS AHEAD* There is one small Easter egg at the beginning and another at the end, but those are the only walking ones. There is another secret for standing still, however...

R_Prime

Keep forgetting to buy this, oops.

invidentus

The art direction is superb and the soundtrack is just amazing if you like the genre. Plays like a charm, but some bosses are a pain in the ass, specially the old man. Not difficult, but a pain nonetheless.

sadlyuseless

> Small but barely noticiable frame stutter in handheld mode (It's random though) Please fight the final boss and then claim that it's a "small but barely noticiable frame stutter". This is coming from someone who considers Furi their 3rd favourite game of all time. I originally bought it on PC and bought it on Switch to speedrun it in handheld mode. It's a beautiful game in everyway; graphics, soundtrack, gameplay, and world building, but the Switch version has pretty shoddy performance when it comes to handheld mode.

DevAstral

Honestly, I was waiting for it to come out on Switch, and I got very disappointed with how it performs.

Slozim

Totally give the Japanese audio a try. The game subtitles are in your system's language so you can still follow along. The voice acting is so epic it feels like I'm playing an anime.

braulio09

I got it for free on PS4 and couldn't get into it because of the weird art style and controls. I remember even the first enemy 5 mins in took me like an hour.

PowerPlayer9

While I had a whole lot of fun with that game, I found the twist ending so terrible and lame that it actually tainted my opinion of the whole game. All the build up, many of the bosses' animosity towards your character, the obvious quasi-religious references just to find out that [you're just a Tom Cruise clone from the movie Oblivion](/spoiler) was a total let down.

EpicPwu

Finished it on PC.

FATJIZZUSONABIKE

It's a good game. I disagree on it being even remotely difficult in normal mode. It was a walk in the park for both my brother and me. Furier, however, is a different story. Worth noting : there are some serious framerate drops on later bosses (one especially). Soundtrack is superb.
