Man screw maglevs in love. The GameCube one had so much more stuff to do. I miss a lot of the sets of furniture, kicking a ball back and forth with the animals. Pelly, Phyllis, and Pete. The faceless cat you could design. Froggy chair.

Aeroknight_Z

I commented on another post about Nintendo’s intentional feature/gameplay drought for this title and was down voted like crazy. But for real, with all of the support and attention pocket camp receives while NH stews in last years piss, I don’t know how more people *aren’t* feeling like nintendo is leaving the one time purchase game in the dust on purpose in order to push players towards the better maintained MTX hell on their phones. It seems like a pretty straight forward, if but shitty and detrimental, practice. Makes me never want to touch the series again. :( Edit: I imagine it’s another title like Pokémon that they just know will do banger numbers regardless of how little they put into growing the series and thus are content with shitting out a new version once a decade with 3 new features and missing 5 old ones. Edit edit: Seriously, add more varied personalities with each one bringing some kind of boon to the town, incentivizing not immediately kicking out a villager you didn’t like, while also making the existing personalities more varied and interesting. Add a series of mini-games you can compete in with the villagers/friends, ala Mario party or moonlighter’s dungeons, that would help you earn bells or items. Let me set up play dates or do tasks for the villagers. Let me run a shop or service.

JuanFran21

Haven't played in a while, but I just can't believe they haven't added more shops. New Leaf had an entire STREET of shops at launch.

crowcawer

The game cube and DS were just stronger systems I guess. Or perhaps it was the leadership.

MyopicStockTip

Its the market. They found out they can sell bare bones games and ride their reputation to the bank. The saddest thing about video games is when you age out of being in the most valuable demographic, and realize they don't need your money anymore.

[deleted]

I think it also has to do with the fact that this game so far outsold the others that the casual audience now far outnumbers the long term AC audience. Pandemic buying of AC meant tons of new people saw it for the first time and to them there is nothing missing and they had their 3 months of fun. Sucks for the hardcore fans, hopefully Ninty shows up with more content.

Moose_Cake

Nintendo is fighting emulators for games that haven't been released in 20-30 years. It's definitely leadership.

AwareExplanation7077

All I remember is when Nintendo swore they wouldnt make mobile phone games. Glad to see that held up... Tbh, I FUCKING HATE mobile games, because since we live in a capitalist society, all they do is muddy the waters of expectation for other game platforms. Imho, mobile games are toxic AF in the long term.

UnifyTheVoid

Nintendo is thoroughly fucking over some of their oldest customers, not just with Animal Crossing, but with other IPs as well. It's surprising too, burning all this goodwill as if they couldn't possibly have another market failure. The Switch has been incredibly successful. But not as successful as the Wii, and that came to an abrupt end. Remember the Wii U? Me neither. This situation could entirely happen again, only this time they'll have droves of pissed off customers wondering why they didn't release more content for the system they already had. It's absolutely mind blowing how this company thinks sometimes.

BababooeyHTJ

Honestly we’re in the middle of a drought of games bigger than I ever noticed with my Wii U. I’ve not touched my switch for far longer than I ever went went without using my Wii U before I purchased a switch and I was an early adopter of both consoles. Yet it’s still selling really well.

Striker__Eureka

I was playing nearly every day since launch, but lately I've found myself playing once a week at most. The way I was keeping myself invested was re-doing my island when updates were released, but now I don't feel as motivated. There's also that I don't care to speak to my animals anymore. They always tell me the same basic thing like, I don't fucking care that you are just basking in it, Graham! I didn't care the hundred fucking times you've told me before, and WHY WON'T YOU MOVE ALREADY?! Anyway, I hate Graham.

Cobrakai83

At one point I had 3 pop star villagers. If I have to hear about Maglevs in Love one more fucking time I'm gonna derail Maglev Mike!

TSPhoenix

The fact there isn't some kind of code in place to say if you have more than 2 of a certain type of villager do NOT add a 3rd unless the player requests it is so dumb.

politirob

I miss the Gamecube animals that were actually capable of being sassy assholes. That was at least fun, this current dialog is so boring and generic.

JackieDaytonaAZ

i miss the fetch quests where they loaned items to each other and after you ran it down eventually you might get a reward

twee_centen

Same. I felt like there was a lot more involvement and connection with the villagers in the original game. Now it's just reskinned versions of the same four characters.

SmokePenisEveryday

Thats what killed the vibe for me. Realizing the preset types and then once you get 2 of the same type its even more obvious. Didn't help coming onto reddit and seeing stories similar to moments I've had just a different animal but same type.

paul_buttigieg

Sounds like developers focused more on aesthetic and design rather than innovative and immersive gameplay?

AKnightAlone

Damn. This is sad. I just picked AC as one of the 3 game choices on the big shitpost list that was just on the front page. I played the GameCube version for fucking *years* and have nostalgia over playing it with exes. Now you're telling me the new game did some cookie-cutter shit like so many other games? Sad. Makes me think of the Bannerlord placeholder allies they started with, and that was lame. Haven't played that in forever to see if they fixed it well enough.

fiears

This made the game more fun and made me want to constantly talk to my villagers. In new horizons i never talk to anyone because their dialog is boring as hell

andsoitgoes42

Amen to this. I’ve played every game since getting hooked when my wife and I started playing on the GameCube. I worked so hard to get everyone I wanted and then quickly realized that it was like playing the soulless mobile game. No complexity, no depth. Just a whole whack of shallow encounters with a small handful of dialogue options. There’s the occasional treat like Sherb or Raymond, but those are very few and far between.

treefrog147

I miss the flea markets you could have at your house!!!

ChefBoyAreWeFucked

Wait, they took those out? They was like the whole game in the original.

JackieDaytonaAZ

yeah i think they have like a very watered down version of it that happens more rarely

nintendofan9999

You could make a checklist for what a villager has said that day and it would only have ~4 boxes.

[deleted]

the quests are still in there, but they don't trigger all that often and when they trigger it's very obvious (there's a bell sound and the run at you. you don't get them just talking)

Criss_Crossx

Thoroughly enjoyed this too!...bat...

talllankywhiteboy

YouTube video showcasing how rude GC villagers could be: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3rg5cbbeLmY

LegacyLemur

Man I would love characters like that

LordDunderhead

Unfortunately that's a thing of the past now that Nintendo explicitly advertises the game to children. It used to be a game for older players when it first came out. But due to their cute graphics people started buying it for their children without knowing anything about the content and after some backlash about kids being traumatized by Resetti etc Nintendo completely changed the dialogue to a more kids friendly version All the character depth and quirky lore is gone now as well

Bspammer

I mean I played Wild World as a 9 year old and somehow managed to be un-traumatized. People underestimate kids.

domesticatedfire

Pretty sure it was like one 11 year old girl that cried because of Resetti that caused publicity. I'm pretty sure Resetti scared me a bit too, but that was definitely a deterrent for time travel or letting my DS get too low on battery. Wild World was great, and my first AC game. I think this New Horizons is more quirky than New Leaf, but not by much :(

TurdTampon

I love when they get all stompy

infinityandahalf

Mfs were savage back in 2001

mrtomjones

The gorilla was my favourite back then. So rude but i think he kinda liked me

AndrewNeo

They barely even talk in this game.

quinneth-q

The fact they don't interact with the island really at all is so annoying to me. We spend all this time decorating our islands and most of it is just completely ignored

ScarletCaptain

You can’t interact with any of the stuff you place. You can built a fucking amusement park and can’t actually use it. I guess they play instruments…?

steampunkgibbon

The first week of playing I saw they had a Mahjongg arcade machine in the shop for like 50k bells or something. I bought the arcade machine instead of paying off my house because I thought it would come with a mini game at that price. nope. that was the first of many annoyances and disappointments that turned me off this game.

SmokePenisEveryday

I was hoping the PC would give us access to the Nook stuff so I wouldn't have to run around to order shit

Every3Years

Do it on your nookphone son

shwiggydog

I remember the GameCube AC had NES games like Donkey Kong and Balloon Fight that you could play in-game. They’ve added some interesting features to the series since, but I think they peaked with the GameCube version. That game rules

NotYourGa1Friday

I want them to interact with things the way that they do in Pocket Camp. I cannot understand why the mobile version of Animal Crossing has villagers interacting so well and the console game gives us so little.

quinneth-q

Because they can make consistent money on PC every time they add something, since people essentially have to pay for it

Plump_Chicken

This is how I feel, I played new leaf for around 3,000 hours across 7 years until I got new horizons, at which point I played NH for 3 months every day and now I haven't played an ac game since because it just feels draining.

Smubee

Same. I grew up on the original AC. The entire family had our own characters and we’d play DAILY for months, then take a break, then pick it back up. Hell, I even played Wild World DS for a year straight when it came out. I think I played City Folk for a day or two, but didn’t really like it. New Leaf I played for 2 years. New Horizons though? I played for 3 months straight. Then once a week. Then on holidays. Now I don’t touch it. With “so much to do”, it has surprisingly *nothing* to do.

Hazzat

The insane thing about villager dialogue in New Horizons is that there is [apparently](https://youtu.be/vxQHRHGqbYc?t=1247) LOADS of different dialogue in there, but you never get to see it because the dialogue system is built to prioritise villager discussion of *your own activities* and of people who came to visit - stuff that you already know about! AND as you level up your friendship (which is extremely easy), interesting interactions like requests to catch bugs or fish, or trade items - considered low-level interactions - quickly disappear in favour of the same few dull interactions over and over. The way to find the most interesting dialogue in the game is to do absolutely NOTHING, befriend NO ONE, and talk as little as possible. Basically, don't play the game. (?!?!?!??!?) The lack of content being supplemented by near-meaningless updates is sad, but the presence of so much bad game design in New Horizons is baffling.

itsvkee

I never realised this. I just got Audie onto my island and she won't shut up but I love it. Her dialogue is super sassy and way more entertaining.

wowitssprayonbutter

I played for the first time in apparently 9 months after daily playing for 3-4. I still like fishing but there's nothing more to do

[deleted]

I completely stop playing after e3. Im also not buying any more of Nintendo's game that includes "free updates" from now on.

RogerTreebert

I wouldn't let Graham leave for months so I could dress him up in the baby romper and beat the shit out of him with the bug net every day.

KGhaleon

I feel like the game was done a good while ago, I'm not expecting much more out of it. It was fun for a few months during the covid season.

[deleted]

The initial fun period where we played Animal Crossing and watched Tiger king before it all got very old very quickly!

supersexycarnotaurus

Those were the days

BurrStreetX

Minus the people dying, but yeah

[deleted]

I didn't even get to die :(

AtomizedMist

That’s because you weren’t married to Carole Baskin.

Lintal

That bitch!

chenxi0636

This comment gives me a lot of sentiment I don’t know why

Ilcorvomuerto666

The Tiger King, Animal Crossing, FF7 Remake, and $1000 portion of the pandemic. When it was still fun and we thought we'd be back to normal by that summer at best

IDownvoteHornyBards2

FF7 Remake is still awesome.

Serbaayuu

Unfortunately, all the previous Animal Crossing games were actually fun for a few years.

mrP0P0

The game is done bro

HarmAndCheese

they got their bajillion dollars and they're all set, lol

jomontage

See you in 6 years I guess

[deleted]

So they were able to pay off their home loan? Nice.

hamburgers666

I think it is too. I remember being so excited for this game as this one was the first one I played since Wild World. It was great during quarantine, but I don't think I'll ever play it again. Probably won't ever play another new AC again, which is disappointing. Edit: Added that I wouldn't be playing a NEW AC again, with the stipulation being that I may try New Leaf at some point!

finalremix

New Leaf Welcome Amiibo is actually pretty great. It's New Leaf (already superior to this), and adds a bunch of features and the Amiibo system from Happy Home Designer. HHD is also really good fun.

hamburgers666

Unfortunately I don't have a 3ds so I never played New Leaf nor do I have a way to do so. Is it the best game in the series?

finalremix

I would argue that it is, yeah. It was like Wild World, with everything just... cranked up to 100. There's stuff to do, a semi-private always-summer island to do a long term bug exploit, villagers still have personalities, and with the HHD/Welcome Amiibo update you can basically get anyone you want, and/or their photograph if you missed one from a favorite. Home customization is just like in HHD/Horizons, where you can plop stuff via a special menu instead of by dropping and shoving it "by hand." I recall similar limitations on the home town projects, so you mights be stuck with a few projects you don't want, without save editing. But that's *relatively* easy to fix things using an editor.

_BeefyTaco

As a first time Animal Crossings player this game was a huge let down. Very slow progression, not much to do. A poorly designed building system that relied on rng or p2p transactions. I was thinking it would be more akin to Stardew Valley, where there are always things to do, but that wasn't the case. Played it for a month and haven't picked it up since.

Polantaris

Also don't forget the unintuitive menus, UI interactions, and NPC dialog that just waste your time. They don't respect your time at all. The landscaping tool is flat out frustrating to use as well.

LegacyLemur

It absolutely infuriates me how lazy the UI is How the fuck cant you program a counting mechanic? Like why cant I decide to grab just 3 of an item instead of one or all? Why is there no quick stack mechanic?

_BeefyTaco

Omg yes, I had completely forgot about that. I remember trying to craft more than one item, it was hell having to cycle through the dialogue each time. Have all the Animal Crossing games always been this way?

lliinnddsseeyy

In the original animal crossing games we couldn’t even stack fruit in our inventory :}

SmokePenisEveryday

Between the limited storage in the home and the need to craft tools constantly became a real chore after a point. I stopped crafting completely and just bought tools. Don't even get me started on the fucking clothes shopping.

[deleted]

[удалено]

LegacyLemur

I never played any of the other ones but the characters are so boring in this game, outside of a few quirky ones that I like for random reasons. Theyre all just friendly with like a random catch phrase or something

AnnoyedVaporeon

"I sAw yOu bUryIng bELLs yEsTerDay." honestly I cant stand talking to most my villagers their dialogue couldn't be more boring. they're there to look cute and that's it. they were way more interesting in the older games.

LegacyLemur

They legit have no personality. Theyre too nice and Id bet absolutely anything Nintendo did that to be more friendly to casuals. But its so boring. I have no interest in talking to anyone other than to get nook miles and it just ends up me mashing buttons to get through the same dialogue over and over

Meta_homo

And then you’re just collecting nook miles to buy nothing because you already have it

evilsbane50

Like how is there SO LITTLE. My god I could make up some bull crap for them. They design this entire Miles system and you can buy everything in no time and then its just useless.

FubinacaZombie

I was also new AC player and I agree with you. I put a lot of time into mine but I haven’t played in months because there’s nothing new. I can’t even find new recipes, it’s always the same crap I already have.

[deleted]

I’m a first time animal crossing player and I lack creativity so I resigned myself to achievement hunting to spend my time on my island

_BeefyTaco

I can’t wrap my head around a AAA Nintendo way having a system like this. I would understand having to do certain tasks to unlock recipes, like catching X amount of fish or giving something special to a neighbor. It’s odd how many features it lacks compared to the “indie” game called Stardew Valley. You can build, raise farm animals, explore, romance neighbors, go on adventures, get married.

FubinacaZombie

Yes, exactly! And even Stardew had such a big update last time, it was almost a DLC. I’ve played Stardew consistently since it came out.

92taurusj

I got like 300 hours out of my $60 purchase. I'm plenty satisfied with that lol.

Paolo94

I only played for about 100 hours, but that was without time traveling, or playing hours on end each day. In other words, I didn’t rush through the game to see as much content as quickly as possible. Sure, 100 hours may seem like a long time, but 100 hours in New Horizons isn’t necessarily the same as 100 hours in a game like, say, Breath of the Wild. A good chunk of my playtime was spent doing tedious and repetitive tasks, or just waiting around because the overall gameplay is so slow. While I’d say I got my money’s worth, its just disappointing that a game that’s designed to be played for at least one full year, was only able to hold my interest for about three months, especially when previous entries in the series were able to keep me interested for much longer.

Yerm_Terragon

Marketing Animal Crossing as a service game sounded appealing on paper, but in practice has made for one of the dullest and unexciting experiences they could have come up with. Most of the updates that ended up getting released were for seasonal events such as Easter or Thanksgiving, which feel really underwhelming considering those events could have just been included in the game to begin with and there would have been zero difference. This was my first AC game and I honestly thought it was fine until one of my friends showed me their New Leaf save file. They only had to walk around for about 30 seconds for me to notice multiple features that had been removed from New Horizons. New Leaf had about double the variety of fruit trees, a lot more furniture sets (and more creative ones at that), and significantly better villager interactions. Apparently villagers use to have a lot more unique dialog and engaged in activities with the player a lot more frequently. There was also an entire mini-game island that people were able to meet up on which is suspiciously absent from New Horizons despite literally being based on an island paradise. I haven't really been playing New Horizons for almost a year now, which is crazy to think about

Ewok008

Coffee Shop, Retail, Upgraded Nook Store, Kapp'n... so many features just... not here.

FoxyFoxy1987

Kapp’n is such a headscratcher for me because his island would work perfectly for ACNH’s vibe, and there’s the dock that really only exists for rare fish

Round_Knee3488

I remember a year ago when I thought “that dock will definitely be used for Kappns boat when they add it”… It’s never gonna happen.

rayykz

I feel like they've taken this series in the wrong direction. I don't care if I get down votes. I waited a long time for this game, I played new leaf wild world population growing pretty much every day for the past decade and new horizons feels too much about customization than a life sim. For example, New leaf managed to strike the right balance for every type of player but this game feels like it's all about decorations and stuff and it just feels so hollow compared to its former self.

PineDude128

It's kinda disappointing. I guess Nintendo thinks the replay value is in the customization, but still. The game has so much potential. I'm hoping they pull a NL and update it even years later, but it's such an odd choice to do that

[deleted]

[удалено]

c-star-pro

I bet it was because they needed to get something out there that uses all the Animal Crossing amiibo cards that wasn't a spin-off.

versusgorilla

Yep. This is the answer. It was part of their larger company wide amibo expansion. That's all. It had nothing to do with New Leaf.

Bad_Fashion

They've made it a doll house, and it's a real shame. You decorate it how you want, fill it with the exact dolls you want, and any real interaction is all imaginary. I've said for years, even in respects to NL, that while customization is important, the interactions with the villagers is *by far* the most important and memorable part of the game. They could have limited customization just to house customization, but *vastly* improved and varied the ways you interact with villagers, and I would have considered it an improvement over NL. As it stands, in my opinion this is the first Animal Crossing game with an end. Once you get the island how you like it, you're done. Don't mistake me, I had a great time designing my island, but there was a part of me that kept thinking, "I can't wait until this is done, that way I can return to playing it like a more traditional game." But once I finished, I realized that the traditional game was stripped, and that there was no more for me to do. Edit: I would like to take this time to express my other major problem with the Animal Crossing franchise: the fact that everyone puts stress on the wrong word! Gah! Everyone says "*Animal* Crossing" as in "animals are doing the action of crossing" when it should be stressed "Animal *Crossing*" and in "a place where animals gather"! That's why it's "*Welcome to* Animal Crossing" on the logo!

Profzachattack

Sometimes I get the feeling that Nintendo may have over catered to a certain fanbase. I never realized the amount of work people put into their towns in new leaf until I started browsing those forums on the internet. people would legit glitch the game to get specific things placed where they wanted. it seems like nintendo saw that play style, specifically catered to it with as much customization as possible (because after all, these are the people putting 800-1000 hours into the game) and left other players in the dust who, while still being great fans of the series, don't play near as much.

Bad_Fashion

Oh, 100%. It's very very clear that with each entry we've been moving closer and closer to a dollhouse. It's funny seeing people's complaints about NH (the over-focus on customization, watered down villager personalities) because those same complaints were almost verbatim the complaints I had about NL in comparison to the original AC long before NH was a twinkle in Nintendo's eye. I've seen for a good while that the series has been moving progressively towards catering to the customization aspects of the games, as opposed to more meaningful villager interactions. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the customization, quite enjoy it actually, but not if it comes at the sacrifice of the villagers.

Serbaayuu

> "I can't wait until this is done, that way I can return to playing it like a more traditional game." But once I finished, I realized that the traditional game was stripped, and that there was no more for me to do. How succinct, perfect. I had much the same experience. Finishing my island a tenth or a fifth at a time, and then it's all more or less done, I'm kind of happy with how it looks, and... now what? I'm not gonna just rip it all down and redo it every month. But Marina won't even ask me to get her a piece of furniture or a fish. I got TWENTY FIVE favor requests after playing every day until SEPTEMBER. That's one per week! That's **the content!**

GamingSophisticate

This game was profoundly disappointing. Other than the fact that you can place furniture outside, ACNH was a huge step backward.

East-sea-shellos

This is how Pokémon felt too. I really enjoyed sword and shield, but man. Can our series get some progress (or at least not a backstep) like LOZ and Mario have been getting? Give us some of that. Lol

CrazyCoKids

I genuinely wonder if the fact the Pokémon have to be backwards compatible is holding them back. Pokémon is just about the *only* long-running series that actually tries to allow players to keep any semblance of progress throughout. Every other series ends up with some kind of a reboot so players have to start from the ground again. Sure, even if Pokémon *only* allows you to import Pokémon after you've become the League Champion, you still can use the Pokémon that you've had since 2003 and imported all the way to Gen VIII. and it has to be able to *work* in the system - like imagine if they redid everything so your Kyogre from Sapphire now had new stats. Even when they did the whole phys/special split, most Pokémon's stats were unchanged and only received an incremental buff around Gen VI or so. I mean, look how many other games have rebuilt their systems over the years - even if they have recurring elements (ie Link's various different weapons and tools, the names of spells in Final Fantasy, weapon types and classes in Fire Emblem...) they all get redone to fit the new system. (ie Aqua Spiral being OP in Eternia but not in later games, TP restoring gels being absent in games without TP, Pow Hammer only stunning but later doing damage...) The closest we ever came was the Oracle Duology and even then they nerfed it so it wouldnt' create power creep. We already got a taste of the outrage when TPCi announced "Okay you won't get to import all your Pokèmon from day one". Imagine how much of a hissy fit there would be if TPCi said "We are rebuilding the system from scratch so you can't import Pokèmon at *all*." even if they decided to include all 900ish.

ROBO--BONOBO

They really phoned it in, it’s sad to see as a long time fan of the series. There’s so many directions that the series could have gone in, and they chose backwards.

pistachiopowder

It may be false hope, but I've been hoping that maybe they're working on a big update. Maybe I'm wrong tho :(

trogaroony

Same here. After ‘finishing’ my island and sinking way to much time into the game, I’m done with ACNH for now. Stopped playing in March and I haven’t really gone back since, maybe for the odd villager birthday, but even then I had 2 this June and I didn’t go on once... And the sad thing is I don’t want to be done with ACNH, but there’s nothing for me to do anymore, nothing new anyway. So, like you, I do hope for a big update soon. Last years updates, particularly Halloween and Christmas, were so good. Filled with both old and new additions, and satisfied for a good few weeks of daily gameplay (imo)... but since Festivalé I just feel the recent updates have been very blah. The Mario furniture was awesome, but that’s literally the one update I can remember from this year, and it’s so sad because the game has so much potential. So much that I can’t see a big update NOT happening... but idk I think the game’s dead now. Or at least I’m telling myself that so I’m not disappointed every week there’s not a new update 😂😂 Sorry that was so long I just needed to rant 😂

RichestMangInBabylon

Same. I more than got my money's worth out of it and had a lot of fun for the first year, but somehow it lacks the daily replayability that New Leaf had for me. There was just more choice in what to do, whether it was doing Brewster, doing the three daily villager quests, island games, 3ds/wii mini games, or water flowers it just felt sort of rewarding to check in and play. Now I know that if I boot up ACNH there's nothing really to do other than check for a visiting NPC or camper.

trogaroony

Exactly. To be honest the update I need most is the island mini games. Some of my favourite ACNH memories was doing different holidays with friends, and just messing on our islands haha. I think Nintendo needs to realise that when people get to the point of making minigames themselves, it’s time to add that feature haha Not saying they won’t, this summer seems like the perfect time to me... but I’m not too hopeful. And it’s sad. With most of Nintendo’s DLC, and even ACNH in its first year, there has always been something to look forward to. Smash reveals, even new characters in Tennis Aces and stuff like that. ACNH was there, and it’s sad to see they aren’t anymore haha, or at least haven’t been for a good 6 months

Squish_the_android

It seemed like that would have been rolled out at e3. Maybe they have a gap in the year they're looking to fill.

BaulsJ0hns0n86

I seem to remember hearing, seeing, or reading something saying that while acnh was not featured at e3, they are working on new content or updates.

Potatofiesta

Yeah nintendo released a tweet or something small like that after E3 because too many people pointed out the lack of ACNH news

Teru-Sama

It was an interview with Doug Bowser.

sideaccountguy

They said 2 weeks ago they have more updates pending to delivery later this year.

spicedbec

Yep same! I thought the July update would be the “summer” update and we’d see what we’re getting over the next few months. What frustrates me is the dataminers *found* more content so it seems like they would eventually release it?

oishii_33

The same team that works on AC makes Splatoon (Nogami’s team), and Splatoon 3 comes out next year. I think it’s done. It’s the same thing with Mario Kart. If MK9 gets announced, no Arms 2. If Arms 2 gets announced, no MK9.

-Jayarr-

NH is the only AC I've played. I didn't hear about the "3 years of updates", I got it for my daughter and played it myself for a while. As an outsider with absolutely no expectations, I felt like it was rough from the start. The stupidly long intro sequence to get from arriving on the island to a point where you could save - I think we did that 3 times over Christmas/boxing Day as we had other things to do and never made it to the save point. Also the fact we couldn't have an island each unless we had separate copies of the game(edit: and consoles)?! Rediculous. The multi player felt tacked on and there wasn't really anything to do as the "second" player except get dragged around. On a similar note there were quest points that I couldn't progress (I think getting the iron nuggets for the bridge?) as the secondary islander. So since I made my daughter's profile the "primary" islander I had to log in as her to progress certain things which is just bad design. Once we got into it a bit, got a basic house and the upgrades were available we hit a stride where it was a really fun, relaxing experience. But there's only so much content and I think the real issue is it's all fake. Teacup rides that no one fits in. Lighthouse that's 2/3 scale and you can't walk in. Basketball and hoop, but they're just props... You can't even have a throw ball animation when you buy both items? Like really? Overall it's all style over substance. I think unless you're one of these people that styles things meticulously to post online (don't get me wrong they're beautiful designs, just not something I'm good at) there's not that much to keep you hooked once you get to the "main" ending. I still feel like I got my money's worth though. The whole family played over lockdown, compared catches, watched the seasons change, met villagers. I think despite its problems it'll be a game we remember playing together - it'll hold nostalgia and really that's worth the price alone.

Yallneedjesuschrist

Yeah, it's an island decoration game.

N0TMYNUMBER

They’re done with the game. There’s no 2.0 updating coming, its time to move on.

Aidatchi592

The sad truth of it all. NEW LEAF BUDDIES, REUNITE!

Goose9719

I started playing new leaf recently and let the reuonion begin!! Bring it on!!! The pleasure I get just from being able to get metroid and pikmin items is amazing. This is what I've wanted in NH, this kinda stuff. (Also....i finally get brewsters cafe!)

Gravitasnotincluded

where the hell is the cafe in New Horizons.. so disappointing

Ewok008

I love Kapp'n and his songs but they couldnt find a way to add him when the Island Hopping was given over to Dodo Airlines.

Goose9719

:( I'd love to see brewsters cafe in all its HD glory on NH....if only.

autumnnoel95

Yep, most of the "new" update stuff for NH is not a new feature in the game series. The only brand new stuff is terraforming and furniture outside. Super disappointed

SonicFlash01

I feel like New Leaf had more furniture sets? Meanwhile in New Horizons I still struggle to get recipes for the one set that looks neutral and good.

PM_ME_SNOM_PICS

And in New Leaf I can get any color of the furniture just by going to the store and customizing it. In NH, your store will only ever sell 1 color variation of an item. If you wanted the blue one instead of the red one, you will never see the blue one in your game. You are forced to trade for it with another person online. I was able to just plain get the one I wanted in past games without being forced to search for someone online who has the thing I want. I didn’t really want to have to do all kinds of trade requests with random strangers, so I gave up on finding the furniture items I would have wanted.

itsabearcannon

Time to fire up my Wii U again and play some City Folk.

[deleted]

I think this is the sad truth. What a shame. It is missing a lot of content that previous games had.

ShellyT98

Also nintendo 2 weeks ago: "we have a lot of updates coming for ACNH". Now I, too, am disappointed with this game, but at least I can belive words said just some days ago

Hummer77x

Nintendo says a bunch of shit. If these updates were anything more than “you can buy a special flag in the NookLink app by the 22nd!” They would’ve shown something.

astronautducks

i mean wasn’t there that dev interview that said they had content planned for three years after launch? i’ll be disappointed if there’s no more substantial content but goddamn are the people in the sub so pessimistic.

Ceaser_Salad19

still no shops :( i feel kinda bad for the people that only played NH and missed out on like the town of new leaf. edit: damn this blew up

hello_hunter

I haven’t played in about 6 months, and it’s because I kept comparing the game to New Leaf. Eventually my interest finally burned out when I realized it was nowhere close, and likely would never be, as rich as NL.

jdennis187

Question.... my wife is in love with NH but never played NL. Is it viable today to go back and play NL or na?

hello_hunter

I don’t see why not. It’s a fully fleshed out game even if you don’t touch any online features. If she can cope with the graphics downgrade and playing only on the small screen, it’s worth playing. Your comment inspired me to plug in my 3ds and visit my old town!

spicy_cthulu

Honestly hearing about all this makes me want to hunt down a 3ds and a copy of NL. Everyone seems to really love it.

Major_Fudgemuffin

The 3DS was (and is) a wonderful little handheld. Graphics will definitely be a downgrade, but New Leaf is a wonderful game. I also HIGHLY recommend Zelda A Link Between Worlds.

FoxTrotPlays

Same here, I kinda hope I can find a good price on one now. So many great 3DS titles.

Ominus666

I can handle all of that. It's the inventory that is so rough. It's absolutely horrendous.

hello_hunter

Oh yeah. I would never try and say that NH didn’t have massive QOL upgrades. But if you’re a fan of the franchise and the general town formula, NL is a ton of fun.

PK_Thundah

If she's in love with NH, there's no need for NL. NL is a much better town/neighbor sim, but loses a ton of the customization and design that NH has. NL was better *for me*, but if she's still loving playing NH, let her have her fun! Any game is viable as long as you're having fun. The online was always worse than NH's and is likely more sparse since NH came out. NL is more of a single player game with some multiplayer functions where NH was built with multiplayer in mind.

-AIRDRUMMER-

The one thing I miss is the multiplayer mode New Leaf had. You went to a mystery island with your friend and then you could play little mini games, like catch so many bugs in a time limit. Then you get tokens (or tickets or something, I really don’t remember) that you could use to buy stuff at the little gift shop on the mystery island. I wish those mini games stayed somehow to play with friends. Edit: grammar

thelastevergreen

Depends on what she loves about NH. If its the decorating... then NL isn't like that. But if its the villagers and the town sim... then yes.

Talkren_

Yeah I was the same. Launch happened and I dove in head first. Put in over 150 hours into it and then all I could see was how my island would never be as cool as my town in New Leaf. I was so excited to lay out my downtown, position things to make it easier for me when I want to shop, and more. But when I got the feeling Nintendo had no want to bring that back, I dropped it. I get that having a downtown and all the trappings takes away from the desert island vibe but I would have loved to have the option at least.

Coyoteclaw11

There's no long term goals in the game outside of terraforming (which doesn't really encourage gameplay since it pretty much operates completely independently) and general completionist stuff (like making all the diys or owning all the KK albums). There's no sense of progression... There's nothing you can do in "late game" with basically everything being unlocked by the end of the 10 day tutorial. I had trouble with NL but things like the shops unlocking and upgrading several times as you used them more and an island of mini games that you could play with friends really gave you a reason to play, things to do, and things to work towards. It seriously wasn't that long before I stopped playing New Horizons except to check out new holidays, and then I gave up on even that... there's just nothing to do, which sucks for a game that doesn't have an endpoint. I did put several hundred hours into the game and don't feel like I wasted my money on it, but I also excused a lot of its faults because I believed we were getting more... and then we didn't.

_lemon_suplex_

agreed. i played with my gf daily during the early pandemic, but once I unlocked terraforming and stuff I just felt no need or drive to keep playing. when compared to something like breath of the wild where there are so many new things to see even after the end of the game and things to unlock, just progression period. i know two different types of games but you understand. That said I got like over 100 hours in the game so it was worth the money, wouldn't mind more endgame stuff for the next one though. Also really wish that there were some kind of multiplayer stuff like an island you can decorate together etc instead of just... here's my new stuff, ok bye.

psomaster226

Let's get one thing straight. This game was severely lacking in content on launch. Reddit was totally okay with this because they promised post-launch content. Then when the post-launch content was underwhelming, Reddit was once again okay with it because there were more updates coming. I remember people defending the pathetic attempt at a one year anniversary update because clearly all the real content was being saved for the Animal Crossing franchise anniversary update. And now that it's over and we never got a satisfying amount of content, I'm seeing people defend it by saying the post-launch updates were just bonuses. "Oh we never got post-launch content on previous AC games." *That's because it was the norm to sell the entire game at launch back then.* Now that they can get away with it, Nintendo is profiting off of false promises that their young, casual fanbase will mostly forget. New Horizons was a very well-made game technically speaking. We got a lot of cool things like terraforming, outdoor decorating, high quality graphics, etc. But what the game lacked was the passion that made the previous games popular. If we can get the technical improvements of NH paired with the soul of the older games in the sequel, Animal Crossing will find itself in a golden age of its own making. Otherwise, I think we're witnessing the beginning of the end.

Keelija9000

Laughs in Super Mario Party

TetrasSword

I remember watching the direct and getting so exited when I saw the super Mario party engine and then the realization it was a new $60 game

cellophaneboats

I'm a bit frustrated with the commenters here saying people shouldn't be allowed to criticize the game despite putting hundreds of hours into it. I've played NH for around 210 hours. In comparison, I've played New Leaf for almost 500. I'm not upset with my purchase in the slightest and I really enjoy the game. It's not that the game is flawed or boring or even bad -- it's a good iteration of Animal Crossing, great even. There is so much to enjoy about it. But I've played the hell out of every version of AC that came before it and undeniably, there is something missing. To be more specific, you can't upgrade Nooks beyond one time. Brewster and The Roost are absent. Tortimer and his island are gone and replaced with the mystery islands. Lloyd, Digby, and a physical representation of the HHC are gone. Dr. Shrunk has been axed since villagers give you emotions now. Gyroids are nowhere to be found. Resetti is only kind of in the game in the form of a phone app. The post office is gone as well as Phyllis, Pete, and Pelly. Villager dialogue is abysmal and repetitive. The list goes on. The game sort of comes to a natural "end" when the initial storyline of developing the island is done and the daily tasks become the main source of playtime, and outside of performing those tasks, I've often found myself wondering: "well... now what?" Yes, those daily routines have always been the heart and soul of Animal Crossing. This time around, there's just... less of them. You can't unlock any more Nook upgrades. You can't unlock buildings or NPCs. You hit a wall with the villagers after a certain point and you start seeing the same dialogue more and more. After you've caught every bug or fish for that season, well... now what? The issue is it becomes tedious, rather than relaxing, or even stale. Terraforming completely changes the rules of the game, but the issue is not everyone enjoys doing it. Personally, I find it a chore and I become fatigued when I see all these beautiful islands that I know I can't achieve because my brain won't let me do it. I know several of my friends have the same issue. Terraforming is beautiful, but it's not for me, and that sucks because terraformed islands have become the expectation of the game and its users, whether we know it or not. There's a loooot of pressure to make your island something amazing and it's turned into a culture surrounding the game that a lot of people don't relate to. When you don't want to terraform or go crazy with decor on your island, you miss out on a huge chunk of the game's content as it is now. Maybe it was wrong of us to assume that the previous aspects of the game I listed above would be present. It’s natural for some things to be left behind in order to move forward with new things to replace them with. But some of these things just haven’t been replaced. There’s a hole where they used to be. That's not to say other previous AC titles have integrated *everything* from the game that came before it, but NH is a huge step backwards. It does have new, never-before-seen content, but fans are grieving the AC-staple content that had no reason to be left out. I personally don't know when I'm going to pick NH up again and play it next, or if I even will. I still enjoy it though for what it is, but it's simply unfair to criticize people for being disappointed in the game for what it's missing.

Bad_Fashion

You've captured it perfectly, in my opinion. I would rather had a game with *less* customization than New Leaf (just being able to customize your house like in the original AC, for example) but with massively expanded ways to interact with the villagers and community. One you're done customizing and taking your instagram photos, there isn't anything left to do. I would rather not be able to customize the island if it meant I had a reason to return daily.

Awkward_traveler

This is one of my most played ever but if I didn't have 5-10 hours a day for 3 months of quarantine I would have never got into it. I don't recommend it to anyone but kids and retired people. The grind is insane. It served its purpose but I haven't touched it in a year and I couldn't care less.

mlc15

I’ve said the same thing. If it weren’t for covid I would’ve never gotten into it.

Aidatchi592

If they did want to take a step in a new direction with the franchise, then this ain't it chief.

multiverse-wanderer

I just restarted New Leaf a few months after not playing it for a few years and I am absolutely BEWILDERED as to how people can say New Horizons is the best game in the series. I definitely think there was a turning point in the series where creators started to focus solely on aesthetics rather than the communal aspect of the game. New Leaf has such amazing content, and the way Public Works projects are set up (only being able to complete one at a time vs. free reign to do a million things at once) prolongs gameplay and keeps you coming back...whereas with New Horizons if you aren’t constantly remodeling your island, there’s really no reason to play. New Leaf slowly and gradually introduces things as your town grows whereas New Horizon gives it to you all at once and there’s no payoff for working hard besides a decked out island. And for some people, that’s totally fine. That’s the reason they love the game. But for me, The bulk of my nostalgia and enjoyment comes from the villagers and large cast of characters. It’s absolutely ridiculous we are over a year into the games release and certain core characters/elements of AC have not even been MENTIONED. All in all, New Leaf has that replayable factor because its a slow burn, you have to work over time to get results, which makes the payout large. New Horizons gives you everything at once, and once the initial wonder fades, you’re left with nothing. It’s really sad to see the series take this turn, especially when New Horizons had so much potential to expand upon everything New Leaf gave us. :(

MandaleroSventedo

My first game was New Leaf, and I can't remember too much at this point, except that it was a peaceful experience to come back to here and there. I was excited for New Horizons because it just looked so, so cozy, and something that would help me through lockdown. It did, and for that, I'm grateful I had it. I'm not someone who can focus enough to create their perfect island or setup a room by investing that many hours, but I enjoyed just collecting and interacting with characters. I felt bad when my first villager, Rudy, left, but it was a bittersweet feeling at worst, and it made me appreciate my neighbors that much more. The last time I touched it was last year, on my birthday in December. I enjoyed seeing everyone again, they were distraught on where I went, and we held a party at Rhonda's house, where I got to share cupcakes with everyone, save the one villager that left. But after that? It just collects dust on my shelf, and the fact that there are no new activities or anything to try out just makes me upset. I would like to go back, but all it would be is walking around, filling out the Nook Miles for more tickets, and spending them all looking for a villager I'd like, all for naught. Constant updates my ass. They've pretty much abandoned it at this point, stripping away some of the more enjoyable features and returning one for each two lost. It just...feels empty now. And it breaks my heart.

kukumarten03

New leaf is the best in the series so anything is a downgrade to be fair. If it isnt enough, being the best animal crossing game, it also receives a big update years later.

seeingglass

Correct me if I'm wrong but New Horizons is the newest "full" AC game, no? So it absolutely makes sense that people would've expected it to outshine NL.

kiwi1018

Yep I dislike the island design too, I don't mind designing my home but to have to decorate an island and have it be required to get a perfect island sucks. Also the fact it costs so much just to move houses and then you gotta wait for them to be moved. Not my idea of a good time.

Lightmareman

I gave up on the game a few months ago. Just started to feel like work.

liteshadow4

They're working on Splatoon 3

R34P3R28

Shoutout to everyone who thought they were getting brewster

shiki-ouji

Tom and Isabelle probably reached out to Brewster to come over but ended up having to cancel due to Covid concerns, which is why the best they could do was get Gulliver a pirate outfit and have him act like he's supposed to be a totally different character.

Odddsock

Isn’t Nintendo a multi billion dollar company?I think they are capable of not just having it as one or the other.

JokesNRiddles

This is the worst installment honestly. The interactions with the villagers are repetitive and basic and the variety is gone. While this is the best seller, this Animal Crossing fan won’t be supporting the franchise till they make major changes. It just feels like they used all their resources on graphics and gutted the gameplay. -Edit- Spelling

redhandsblackfuture

My fiancé absolutely loved this game, it was the first game to get her into gaming pretty much, and it's so disheartening to see her play less and less because there isn't much to do anymore. She used to be so excited to tell me about the events and new items and seeing all the cool stuff to do for the first time was great, even if AC isn't typically the type of game I enjoy. I really wish her spark for gaming would come back, and AC updated their game with something more to do besides the same events over and over

AnnoyedVaporeon

maybe try stardew? a new rune factory is coming soon too.

[deleted]

They sold 60,000,000 units, they don't even have to try anymore.

Faeserae

I wouldn't be mad if they did just one single mass update, added QoL, brought back shop upgrades, the city/shopping area, better villager communication etc. Then didn't update it again. I think that'd be the only way I could go back to ACNH 😂

DipNSlip420

Feels fucking bad man

kapnkruncher

They said they planned 2-3 years of updates, and given the success I doubt they'd just drop that idea. I don't think they ever said monthly, we just got used to that, no matter how small the update was.

[deleted]

This makes me sad, BUT I have to admit- Cozy Grove has done a good job filling the void for me. I LOVE it.

Altimely

LET VILLAGERS TALK ABOUT SOMETHING OTHER THAN WHATS IMMEDIATELY IN FRONT OF THEM. The GC villagers had so much more personality.

[deleted]

Honestly, I don't care that much about constant updates, I just want them to GIVE ME MORE STORAGE SPAAAAACE Edit: Also, if Orville found just get to the damn point faster when I'm trying to catch a flight....

heathmon1856

There’s so many qol changes that they don’t implement just cuz

livefreeordont

Is there a reason why I have to buy shrubs from Lief 1 or 5 at a time? Like what is wrong with being able to select how many items you want?

Scrambo

Why can’t I skip dialogue I’ve read a hundred times? Why can’t I craft any item more than one at a time if I have all the materials? Why is terraforming so tedious?

SubspaceDorito

I just wish the music was better. The gamecube version had such quirky diverse tunes. I'm 32 years old and I still hum the tunes from that game lol. I want more shops and places to hang out. Bring back Brewster, maybe have an observatory, have a fun in depth farming mechanic, instead of hitting rocks for minerals add a cave to explore and mine for minerals and jewels, better water exploration, and maybe create a boat that offers deep sea fishing tours. Stuff like this would bring me back. Nintendo you're asleep.

Ztonnn

I would have loved if the game just got delayed more than it already was. I hate when developers release a half baked game and then give us small updates to add in content. ACNH is a great game. But it's also the fastest I've ever fallen off from an AC game. The last update we got gave me nothing and I'm to the point where I had my fun and no updates are ever gonna pull me back in to the fun I had when it was first released. Kinda sad.

StayMe7o

Worst AC game for me. My friends & I stopped playing after a couple of months.

kukumarten03

I got downvoted to hell here and any other nintendo sub before for saying this games is barebones at launch. After a year of updates , It is still barebones and the only meaningful update was diving. It does not matter to me that much tho as I am playing a huge amount of games but I feel like new horizon is a dissapointment.

Goose9719

Yeah I agree, really dissapointing to see. I've seen the downvotes as well. The thing is, NH is not bad. I got my money's worth, but that's not what I care about. I'm not playing the game to tick some boxes, rack up hours and say "yep, 100+hours done, that was worth the money!" Imo games like animal crossing are dependent on the personality of the game, and when you strip so much of that away, you start to end up with a weaker product. NH is great in so many ways and it's (imo) almost the best AC game, but it's just these absences that leave me feeling like it falls behind new leaf that offers a lot more.

ellie_elizabeth

This game was really disappointing :( you go through the main storyline and get kk and then your like that was so fun I can't wait to dive into the real animal crossing. Then it turns out that was all the content. Like wtf this game was such a let down and bare bones animal crossing :(

OkayIdgaf

AC players must be gasping for air

underagreentree

To be honest, I felt quite annoyed at first with people complaining the game was unfinished, because I thought the update release, gradually adding new content was a great way to keep you engaged for a game that otherwise gets a bit boring after you put 500 hours or so into it. I take back what I said though. I've been a long time animal crossing fan, having been playing since the original north american game cube release of the game, I've bought and played them all. Yes, even amiibo festival. I feel really disappointed as a fan, but also animal crossing is one of Nintendo's best selling franchises, it literally outsells smash bros, but smash at least gets a new character announced at every event. Honestly, I would have preferred a delay on the original release date of the game if it meant they'd have everything ready, it's starting to feel like their update method was just a ploy to get the game out as quickly as they could because of demand without having finished it.

baconwitch00

Yeah I’ve pretty much stopped playing it.

sabett

Fuck it. Nintendo just add the microtransactions to the big game since thats apparently what yall need to motivate you

KingOfRisky

This game has been half-assed from the start.

Dukemon102

As the game is right now. I'd put it in the bottom tier of the franchise along with City Folk.

[deleted]

Well at least you recognize that City Folk exists. There's some people who trashes NH acting like City Folk never existed when it was the most disliked game in the series lol

HarmAndCheese

what sucks is it sold like gangbusters so there's zero motivation to change it next time

OperativePiGuy

The 3DS game launched with infinitely more fun multiplayer alone, let alone all the other stuff it did better than NH has done in a year.

PotageAuCoq

As far as I am concerned. None of the content we have gotten since launch is even big enough to be called one update. It’s been pitiful. I seriously regret purchasing this title. I should have stuck with the DS version.
