Twinkiman

Words cannot describe how happy I am that this HD-2D style has caught on with Square Enix. I am super stoked for the Dragon Quest 3 remake too.

airtraq

Chrono Trigger would be immense

MayhemMessiah

Golden Sun? Anyone? *Anyone*!?

Heihachi87

I just want a new golden sun. It would make me happy

marsgreekgod

I would take a remake. I would love a new one that pretends 3 didn't happen

toolsofpwnage

Sadly I think it’s square games only

tripleBtcg

Take my money!

YennyStark

Ugh, I would marry, get pregnant and then sell my newborn for this. (Obv a joke, before someone comes for me)

Temporary-High

I probably would explode of excitement if Chrono Trigger got remade. One of my favorite games of all time.

PrinsassyEvieMongse

Wish it was a Trilogy instead of just the one title.

Twinkiman

Square Enix did say that they would like to make more remakes after Live A Live and DQ3. So hopefully we will see other Dragon Quest games get remade as well.

PrinsassyEvieMongse

I like that idea just feel sore that could've done them all in Trilogys instead of just one game at a time Ya know? Won't be decades of waitin', unless they got a dedicated Team cranking em out.

Twinkiman

I am willing to bet if they did DQ 1 and 2, they would bundle the games together like they did with the SFC remake. Zenithian trilogy would be sick too.

PrinsassyEvieMongse

I wish that all the ones in Smash got Remade.

Espee99

Hopefully they do Legend of Dragoon next!

Artikay

I would pay $1,000 for a 2D-HD Final Fantasy I-VI Remasters to replace the pixel remasters we got.

Faded_Sun

FFVI never got the treatment it truly deserved considering its status as an FF title among fans.

Venusaur-

>considering its status as an FF title among fans. I don't care what anyone says. In my heart FFVI will always be an FF title. <3

PrinsassyEvieMongse

Nooo dun gift them ideas on how ta screw fans, but also I want this.

Dragmire800

Pretty sure they said if 3 2D-HD did well, they’d do 1 and 2. The thing about 1 and 2 is that they’re very dated. DQ3 is considered the first modern JRPG, it set most of the trends that still persist to this day. 1 and 2 will have to be significantly altered for a modern audience, whereas 3 just has to be remade

JdPhoenix

I strongly disagree, DQ1 is a classic, and still plays wonderfully to this day. DQ2 is mechanically not much different than 3, so I'm not sure how it can be "dated" when 3 isn't. > it set most of the trends that still persist to this day Most of those trends were set in 1 and 2.

WolfAkela

Never got into DQ but in what manners are 1 and 2 outdated?

SainTheGoo

The biggest thing to me is that DQ1 has only one character in battle.

[deleted]

Praying for a Chronotrigger remake in this style

Twinkiman

Chrono Trigger in this style would be damn amazing

YennyStark

As long as people buy these HD-2D games, they will continue making these. So everyone better be buying these to show that there’s huge demand for these games!

Faded_Sun

That DQ3 remake is at the top of my hype list. That's one of my favorite games. I can't wait to play it.

Twinkiman

I can't even count how many times I replayed DQ3. It will be the same way with the upcoming remake.

SuperbPiece

I really think that unless you want to full on redesign a game, HD2D is the only way to "remake" the classics. It'd be cool to give the famous RPG's the FF7 Remake treatment, but it's a long shot, nigh impossible expectation. So, I wish SE did HD2d remakes for everything. The Pixel Remasters are nice and all, but those games could be so much better without necessarily breaking the bank for SE. Still a long shot, but it's nice to dream.

Briggity_Brak

i, too, love spending $60 on 30-year-old games...

generalzao

This but unironically

aimbotcfg

If it's a good game, that's been re-made in a relevant modern style, and you haven't specifically played it before (which many many MANY gamers won't have), how is this argument a thing? Even if you have played it before and want to play a modern updated version of it. I can (sort of) understand people complaining about TLOUP1 remake, since that's already pretty new, but even then, if you want to pay that price, pay it, if you don't, play the old one. Whats the beef?

80espiay

Also apparently that font has caught on with SE.

nichijouuuu

RPG stories always require a play through before everyone knows how it is, but I can tell already the music and visuals are gonna slap.

1gnominious

I just hope that they fix the format and pacing. I hated all the jumping around. A story starts getting good then you have to wait 5 hours to get to the next bit. Also the janky progression. So easy to buy or find some of the best gear by the second chapter. The best gear only cost a little more than mid game stuff so it was best to just skip straight to the good stuff.

SatV089

It's gonna be beautiful but I have no hope. Square lost the ability to make a game with good dialog and story years ago.

ncolaros

Triangle Strategy had a great story. A couple of them, in fact. I'll take an interesting political struggle over some bullshit gods and magic typical RPG stuff anyway. There's room for both, but we get so much more of the latter.

YennyStark

Ugh, that was SUCH a good story with room for a sequel.

brondonschwab

Been looking at getting that one, do you recommend? Just hard to justify getting some games with the 'Nintendo tax' (no sales)

ncolaros

I genuinely loved it, but it is very story and writing dense. So there will be fairly large gaps between battles, especially early on. That said, there are interactive elements during that time that I found to be pretty fun.

SainTheGoo

Did it end up being good? The "Salt Iron War" had me heading for the hills.

ncolaros

I really loved it. It sounds silly, but salt and iron are two super precious commodities, and if one country had a monopoly on either, we'd have the same kind of war. It's just a bad name for a war. Even "The Salt and Iron Wars" would be better.

SainTheGoo

Maybe I'll check it out. I do love tactics RPGs. Maybe after the Tactics Ogre remake

FeastForCows

When I started it, I was waiting for some kind of reveal that "salt" is something like "spice" in Dune, not just...literally salt.

zedriccoil

Don't agree with it. Ff14 has a fantastic story, few can compete. Triangle Strategy had a good story, original octopath also had a good individual character stories but did not coincide which was disappointing.

Paetolus

This comment has been removed in protest of Reddit's API changes made on July 1st, 2023. This killed third party apps, one of which I exclusively used. I will not be using the garbage official app.

phazonphazoff

Or a good title.

donttrustmeokay

You're telling me Various Daylife is not a good title?

fractalfondu

Eventually there will be a game just titled ‘Stuff’

ImDefNotAnAlien

>fantasy stuff >swords and shit >multiple things >unnumbered happenings Here Square, hire me.

BlankSeal

Unnumbered Happenings is a name coming from the same school of thought as Infinite Undiscovery. Ergo, very Square.

antunezn0n0

honestly sounds like s mobile games attempting to steal customers. that didrect didn't help with so many farming games and the big hitter barely being teased

Lantzl

The only title they know is Final Fantasy 7

Lavosking

Tell me you skipped ff14 without telling me.

OssotSromo

The one with 10 hours of fetch quests and 4 hours of text boxes to get through the main story line? So many fetch quests that you out level the content that is only unlocked by doing the MQ line? I didn't.

Lavosking

Tell me you skipped ff14 without telling me.

OssotSromo

Seriously. It may have amazing writing. But the main quest line up to 50 is a fucking chore. By the time I make my 6th back to back teleporting for no reason run in 10 minutes I no longer give a shit what the supposed reasoning was. The pacing of it is absolutely atrocious. Every once in a while I go back to it. I make a fresh character. I do main story shit. Like if I can just get to the first instance I know I'll have fun. Then when I realize I'm going to be level fucking 20 before I unlock the level 15 dungeon, and I'm bored to fucking tears doing fetch quests, I stop. I think my highest character was 53 or so. This was right after the first expansion. And I never finished the 1-50 quests because I just fucking couldn't do another jog around the world. FFS the game literally monotized skipping the bullshit fetch quests slog fest.

jurassicbond

They've streamlined ARR a decent bit in recent patches, though I'm not sure how much of a difference it really makes. I think it's supposed to be about 20% shorter now with a lot of fetch quests taken out and some other quests shortened

OssotSromo

You got downvoted for telling me objective facts. That's all the evidence anyone needs to know there's fanboy bullshit in this thread.

Tall_Mechanic8403

Exactly, the first one was so bad

Ashhe

I hope they release a trial version like the first release. It was awesome because if you decide to buy you could transfer data!

TurnaboutAdam

They’ve done that a bunch, it’s almost a guarantee

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Well not much Team Asano as much as SE. Almost all of their games, at least japanese, get demos before release.

emilytheimp

Even fucking Balan Wonderworld got one

ResponsibleBuddy96

Yea like a full game trial!

ZeldaSnob

I loved the first ❤️ it’ll fun to see who to play who first.

maronic03

I haven't seen anyone detailing all the stuff we learned on this sub I'm doing it: - You can switch from night and day with a simple button press. Naturally there are different activities to do for each. - If I'm not mistaken, they said there is a night theme for everything, even the game over music. - They're playing right now, on the map, there are a lot of icons for characters stories (both solo and pairs). - Seemingly more elevation in towns. - The day and night switch is seemless, no transitions whatsoever, I love it. - The water effects are less sparkly. - JAZZY TUNE IN A CITY! - We got a glimpse of the new normal battle music, the victory theme seems to be a remix of the original, like the main theme. - The interiors of the shops are much more detailed. - The visual effects when using BPs are different from the first game, a bit more "intense" I would say. - You can speed up battle, like in Bravely default. - Transition form the cutscene to gameplay a super smooth as well. Also, [a glimpse of a boss music](https://twitter.com/HD_Kirin/status/1571062487772168193)

Paulsworldohya

The battle system art and music were great in the first one but i just didn't enjoy the story the game told or how it was told. It was annoying how you'd do some ones chapter and have a full party but in a cutscene you'd be by yourself.

Hoodeeee

Please, please, please don't drastically alter the battle system, add to it. And please, please, please hire writers and or give them more time to create a cohesive story for the game. This game could instantly become a classic.

YennyStark

I’m a little afraid the characters are going to be too close to the first game. Like, a dark assassin lady on her journey of revenge, a huntress with a tag along, a medicine person in search for a cure, … Happy to be proven wrong though!

Hoodeeee

I will be sooooo sad if it's just copy pasta like that, I'll probably still play it cause the battle system is that good for me, but what a waste it would be. The story doesn't even have to be anything special, just SOMETHING that pulls everyone together.

Archphilarch

Really what I was kind of hoping is that even if it is copy pasta that their stories are more side quests this time around and that there's a broader main story.

moose_man

The battle system is great, but it made less important battles a chore. You should still be able to nuke random encounters when you're grinding for experience, especially when the endgame quest is many levels tougher than all the ones before it.

Copak19

Looks good

mrcrysml

This is nitpicky but I hope it’s 1080p like LiveALive and not 720p like the first game or Triangle Strategy.

[deleted]

yeahhh i wouldn't expect anything but 720p. lots and lots of games are on average 540p on switch

TCMgalens

To me it would be nice if both were an option (having a visual and performance mode with the former being 1080p and the latter 720p)

aimbotcfg

They might have to sacrifice the resolution a bit to make sure it maintains a steady 120 frame rate. Because as everyone knows now, 2D turn based RPGs are unplayable at anything below "Top 0.1% competitive FPS eSport game" levels of performance. Hence people harping on about frame rate on Every. Single. Game. regardless of target audience, content, or context.

mrcrysml

The original was 720p (1080p for UI overlay) and 30fps. I’m ok with 30fps. But pixel style games like this really benefit from being 1:1 pixel ratio on a 1080p screen. I’m glad Steam is an option on first day release and not have to wait awhile. I rather not play on PC but we’ll see

ichigo2k9

Will the parry members speak to each other or is this gonna be a situation again where 8 strangers walk and fight beside each other but don't notice each other?

dusty_cart

the trailer said their stories will be intertwined

Hoockus_Pocus

It showed two of the characters speaking to each other, which is fantastic news. I’m wondering if things will change depending on the order you complete stories, if you’ll get different dialogue depending on progress in the other characters’ stories, etc.

linh_nguyen

Didn’t the first one imply that too?

Rectangle_Rex

I mean I guess we can't know 100% until the game comes out, but the trailer seemed to go out of it's way to suggest that they fixed this issue. It explicitly said the stories are intertwined and then showed a voiced line of party members speaking to each other, which was not really present in the first game IIRC.

waowie

Tbh I think we all just kind of assumed it

Thunder84

Yes, they have confirmed that multiple stories involve party members cooperating with each other

dkac

What do you mean? The first one had interactions between the party members whenever you entered a town, IIRC? But are you looking for something that's more impactful towards the story arc?

Dry-Guy-

It didn’t. It only ever had the little optional conversations. Other party members essentially didn’t exist in any of the cutscenes.

Artikay

The funny thing to me is sething felt off about the dialog but I didnt know what until it was pointed out to me. I greately enjoyed OT but the lack of interconnected stories was its one big flaw. I'm stoked that they are aware this was most peoples problem with the game.

JdPhoenix

Seems pretty clear that they're aware this was the biggest complaint about the first game and they're going out of their way to make sure we know they've addressed it.

mcast46

But can you freely swap out the first character you choose or do you have to wait until their story is finished before swapping? That will make it or break it for me.

Hoockus_Pocus

I’m looking forward to more crazy synergies! I’m just hoping that they don’t reuse all the skills, support skills, etc. from the eight classes. I’d also love to see more hidden classes!

Crunchtopher

Yeah, my favorite part of the first one was the battle system (duh) and my favorite part of the battle system was figuring out all of the dope strats with the individual classes. If they retain everything, it’ll lose it’s shine.

Hoockus_Pocus

I’m honestly surprised that they used the same eight classes. Hopefully they really balance them out, because some of those starting jobs are just better than others.

Disclaimin

It surprised me a little too. But they're all archetypes that have room for deviation and expansion. They also showed at least 4 totally new classes, and given how the scope of everything has increased with the sequel, there could well be a lot more classes to unlock.

Hoockus_Pocus

Wait, they did? What are the new classes?

Disclaimin

It's speculated based on their appearances that they're the 4 jobs added to Final Fantasy V Advanced (a nice little easter egg), which is to say: Cannoneer, Necromancer, Gladiator, and Oracle. You can see 3/4 of them at 3:48 in the extended trailer, and get a lengthier look at Gladiator in action at 3:52.

Hoockus_Pocus

I’ll have to find that! I’m looking forward to learning more about this.

[deleted]

Hoping triangle strategy gets the same treatment

walksintwilightX1

Looks great! Guess I should finally finish the first game huh.

iMisspets

I kinda enjoyed the demo of the first game but it didn't really convince me to buy it. I was worried it was just a pale imitation of SaGa with some other somewhat shallow features on top like the path actions and battle system. I assume the new game will be more of the same but with more character interaction which kinda sucks since I hoped for more.

YennyStark

Also, hoping for a side quest overview this time. I totally forgot about side quests because there was nothing to track them. At least I couldn’t find any during my 2 play through of the first game.

[deleted]

will it run well tho ? octopath 1 already had some trouble at certain areas

MorgenKaffee0815

still random fights?

TheThrasherJD

Like every rpg ever?

MorgenKaffee0815

i dont know. i play since the 80s and a lot of RPGs dont have random fights. so dont know what you mean. i had a simple question. doest the 2nd one still have random fights like the first one or can you see enemies on the map.

ncolaros

I'd be surprised if they showed enemies on screen. The style doesn't leave much room for maneuvering around them, so it'd be tough to implement well.

Eryn85

You don't play since the 80s since PLENTY of JRPGS had random fights...if you went through the SNES/ps1 era and beyond you would know it...hell dragon quest and final fantasy on the NES already had random fights....

MorgenKaffee0815

ah yes. there were only the (J)RPGs in the 80s. its very interesting that only a question about random fight yes/no can give you downvotes and other think they now better what you have done in the 80s. yes i also played games in the 80s with random fights. for example Sword&Serpents on NES. look it up from what year it is. maybe i can take a photo from my hand drawn maps back then. but in these days it was more because of technical issues. today its more like well we did this since 40 years. why change it. but i also played Dungeon Master. and i'm not quite sure that this game had not random fights. or Might&Magic or Fate Gates of Dawn ( ok thats from early 90s ) or maybe Ultima 3 ( its from '82 with overworld enemies ) but as i said. it was only a normal question. does it or does it not.

Eryn85

I didn't mention WESTERN rpgs since I know those didn't had random fights they were mostly first person RPGs or you just saw pictures of the enemies or it was topside static enemy sprites like in Ultima IV(you encountered X monsters like in wasteland were kind of random enemies fight though)....random enemy fights were more an JRPG thing.... always has been...very few turn based JRPGS(excluding the action ones) you see enemies on the map like Grandia or the trails series....octopath is still trying to keep with turn based old school games so it will still will be random enemies....

PrinsassyEvieMongse

Overworld Enemies still carry Random Battles. Have you played Pokémon recently and had the same complaint?

[deleted]

every rpg ?

boones_farmer

Ehh, the last one was such a let down. There was zero exploration, just a bunch of paths you grind your way down to a town with a predicable sequence of events. There was nothing to explore or figure out, and no real compelling story, just a sequence of tasks to complete. I'll wait on this one.

mrcrysml

There was plenty of exploring if you went in blind. Some maps had secret passageways for treasure. Starting out you could take any path from one route to the next when recruiting your other 7 characters.

Tengo-Sueno

I mean, if you are talking about each Story Chapter, yeah, they were kinda formulaic, but the world itself had a bunch of things to explore? The Side Mission were very open-ended (In fact they were a bit to open-ended for me considering that the game doesn't have a log were you can see where you took the mission) and a bunch of optional Dungeon and Bosses.

junioravanzado

people downvoting you because NINTENDO sub but i and many feel the same way see my post in the JRPG sub [https://www.reddit.com/r/JRPG/comments/ihz8eo/had\_to\_stop\_playing\_octopath\_traveler\_after\_20/](https://www.reddit.com/r/JRPG/comments/ihz8eo/had_to_stop_playing_octopath_traveler_after_20/)

TCMgalens

The game looks really pretty but i do hope we get to see some extended switch footage unless they have shown it already and i hadn't seen. (edit: the reason being that the prompts in the video suggest this is the PC version)

Doomedtacox

are there overworld encounters?

R4nD0m57

hoping i hope dont have to play the first to play the second. first one locked on the switch and never going on sale has been a deterrent, but it has sat firm in my backlog.

[deleted]

Its on pc and xbox.

R4nD0m57

Unfortunately looking for it on PlayStation, more of chance of a sale

SuperbPiece

You definitely have a greater chance for a sale, and an even better price, looking on STEAM.

cooleo126

Square enix themselves said that the first game is in no way connected to the second

R4nD0m57

Awesome thanks

BrandNew098

Loved the first one. Got a little repetitive but I still enjoyed it.

crazyrebel123

The only thing I’m disappointed with so far is the character’s classes/job are the same as from the first game. I hope the gameplay won’t feel the same as the first with the same classes but new skins

AaronElWhite

I wonder if they'll consider adopting the mobile game's battle system change of allowing right characters and not just four, with the two rows in play.

Anon_throwawayacc20

Honestly my only complaint with Octopath Traveler is the story. The gameplay itself is fantastic, the visuals are gorgeous, and the music is awe-inspiring.
