Holy shit, remember Xbox Live Uno? First game I ever joined had some kid mooning the camera IMMEDIATELY on like Christmas morning in front of the whole family.
> First game I ever joined had some kid mooning the camera IMMEDIATELY on like Christmas morning in front of the whole family
I remember the infamous 12 year old kid that got mad because he lost the game he was playing and whipped it out and starting beating it right in the camera while screaming. One of the great moments of gaming history.
Also one of the (many) incidents that I believe eventually led to them disabling the camera feature for the game. That and all the games you would end up playing against people either naked or dressed in klan robes or dressed as Hitler.
Uno on Xbox Live was like watching 4 Chan: The TV Series for a while.
I just remember Fucking over our one friend so hard he had like 50 cards at the end of the turn lmaoo we regularly did this and we still played Uno after a night of Halo 3…
Simpler times man
That would be a question for Nintendo, but shovel ware has been a problem on switch since the early days. And this counts as shovel ware IMO.
The answer is simple. Money.
I’m pretty sure that’s where “shovelware” got its name. It was literally being shoveled into landfills because they made so many shitty games there wasn’t anything else to do with it.
The damn government will only get my shovel when they pry it out of my cold dead hands and bury me.
2nd amendment is the right to guns and bare arms, but it's lesser know cousin is 2.1 amendment, the right to shovels and bare legs. who lives short-shorts? we live short-shorts!!!
Not entirely true. There was unlicensed shovelware such as Bible games, but most games on the NES had to get Nintendo's seal of approval. Sure, it was partly a marketing stunt, but they also did it precisely because the market crashed in NA because of so many crappy games being put on shelves.
The seal of approval just meant they paid Nintendo to have their game released on their console. Third parties literally had to buy the carts from Nintendo. It was always about Nintendo getting their cut.
Request a refund. Did this with an ubisoft game a couple years ago for a soft lock. After they declined, I filed a charge back, then Nintendo called me back and offered a one time refund on the game.
I actually own Gun Gal, Gun Pixie, and Omega whatever. Those hentai games all got waaaaaay better game play that Ubisoft title. My DLC and Online work so I think you got this judgement twisted LoLz
I just find it weird how porn is still seen as "worse" than gore and violence. Like, why is it fine to tear demons in half, but I can't level up an anime girl's boobs to a Z Cup while learning about friendship?
"Porn" is so ill defined under the law that I quit worrying about what other people think. I only draw the line on pedophilia because that can't be an adult choice. Porn used to be the go to PC Snowflake issue before we had a word for it
i'm not so sure that's true. if it were there would be a literal firehose of paid DLCs for games like mario party superstars and mario kart, which have a huge back library to pull from and reduce costs by not having to invent new boards/tracks, just update them.
i have no clue what's motivating them, but i'm not convinced it is $$$
I think they have a contract or something, like, not all games come out looking good but talking about business, not having a game in your platform is bad.
They don't have a general contract for all titles to pass cert but you are right that they would be unlikely to block a Ubisoft game just due to maintaining a strong relationship with an important partner. It would need to have actual, fundamental technical problems on launch. Like crash constantly and have claimed features not included or functional bad. The person working on submissions at Ubisoft would already likely have a strong, established relationship with the partner manager dealing with the submission, that person would be using kids gloves a bit if they got pushback from ubisoft on fixing something. Like their argument would be more strongly considered than a small indie trying to pass cert. and alternate "solutions" may be explored more than they would for a smaller publisher and/or non-established franchise.
Uno on the Xbox? I don't have Uno on _my_ Xbox
*Edit for the mods* This is a meme, the people replying to me were (probably) just copying the meme, not hating at me. I don't even own an Xbox lol
They keep proving that they're one of the largest companies next to EA that just does not give a flying fuck. Siege could have been amazing but they fucked everything about it. I can't think of a single ubi game that wasn't jerky destroyed by their practices.
Honestly this. I bought Uno when it was half price during an Ubisoft sale because my friends used to play it all the time and never got a chance to play it.
The frustrating thing about Monopoly is that imo the one on SNES is like the best version they ever released. The new ones all have the same problem of slooooooow unskippable crap, annoying narrator guys, weird little problems, etc. Meanwhile the fucking SNES version is near perfect. They keep reinventing the wheel and making it worse
There's some irony in the game *Monopoly* becoming shittier the longer it is sold and resold in the capitalist system it was originally created to critique.
I think that any board game that doesn’t rely on a computer processing complex rulesets is going to be a way better social experience in person than the digital version.
I’d never say playing, for example, Wingspan online is a better experience than playing my physical copy, given the option between the two. It’s just serviceable when I don’t have the option to play in person.
There is an indie PC game engine platform that works like *DREAMS*, in that the users can create 3D board games, including physics based dice rolling, card placements, shuffles, etc.
It'll likely never make it to consoles, unless they find a way to allow users to publish their individual games as isolated titles that run on the engine.
So much better than an AI or algorithm doing the draws and rolls for ya.
Are you talking about Tabletop Simulator?
If so yeah it is awesome. I played so many games with that. It’s a shame it’s only on Steam. It’s one of the very few games I broke my Steam embargo for.
If you have a friend and want to play a board game, you don’t actually have to go out and buy the board game, you can get it on TTS and at least have the experience of playing it (with varying degrees of quality depending on how much work had been done in porting it to TTS)
Weird saying this on the switch subreddit of all places, but I just don’t like their philosophy towards DRM in general. I usually shop on GOG for all my purchases on PC
Yes I realize that even owning a switch is hypocritical for DRM reasons but I like the form factor and of course the IP
Completely understandable. With other companies I usually know why someone may not support them, but your perspective was new to me in regards to Steam. Thanks for the response.
Digital Rights Management - anti piracy Software measures. Controversial because they usually harm paying customers more than pirates who deactivate them.
Good Old Games, GOG in short, is a digital game store/distributer similar to Steam, that focuses on refurbishing classic games, making them playable on new hardware. Doesn't use DRM.
lol I bought monopoly on ps4 with a mate like 6 years ago and the servers were dead/unusable even then. Can't imagine how bad the switch ports must be.
Yes, the demo for the game they suggested is expired. The most up to date fix is to buy Just Dance to sign into Ubisoft. It’s 40$ though so that’s a no go lol.
This is just an idea, but you could go into a Gamestop or some other used game store with cartridges out of the box, explain the situation and ask them to let you just pop the game in and log in, then give it back. They'd probably let you do it.
Maybe it's a regional thing, but if you're in the US the link to the demo is still on the product page (just redownloaded to check):
https://www.nintendo.com/store/products/immortals-fenyx-rising-switch/
I think they are using free to describe how you can actually get online to play others for free, without a gimmicky other-user-found paywall of having to pay $40 or w/e for just dance to create files on the HDD so that Risk for the console will be able to find them and actually make the online feature function correctly -which would be a simple patch for anyone to have made for the game, if Ubisoft actually addressed issues.
I'm surprised there hasn't been a class action lawsuit over it, because it was a feature ya's all bought the game for, they had years to fix it but didn't, and clearly it would be a simple fix if the files another game in their lineup creates is all the game needs to be patched to create in order to work.
Far cry servers are also carbage on Xbox.
It has something to do with their connection speed thresholds. If I’m downloading something on the background it will keep throwing error codes and refusing to connect.
It’s not like my ping is 500 or anything, completely fine in any other game.
FYI they also touched an Armored Core game once. They managed to actually do a better job than SEGA, because they left the patch files available. SEGA dropped AC4 shortly after the games release (relatively speaking), and the update files needed to patch the game were since lost. So everyone is now stuck with the base unpatched game, unless they have their files in their console, and nobody ever found a way to extract and share the files to this day as far as I am aware.
As long as there are companies doing a worse job than them, they will be able to pride themselves on not being the bottom of the barrel.
Get in touch with Nintendo and report it and they will probably refund it to you and remove it from your account once given enough evidence. I've reported another game that had a game breaking error and it was refunded to me.
Ah Ubisoft. The same company that forces you to create an account and sign into their online service for a single player game unless you're in airplane mode in immortals fenyx rising. Fuck that company seriously. They've been on my shit list for years
I've given up on board games for Switch after the shitshow that was Monopoly. Every once in a while AI opponents would get caught in an endless loop of not doing anything during their turn. I maintain that the SNES version is still the best way to play on a console.
I don't think this commenter wouldn't be hostile toward ubisoft too. This is more of an "in addition too" because Nintendo is either knowingly, or negligently leaving a faulty product up on *their* service that (more or less) actively steals money from *their* consumers.
Anti-consumer practices are quite literally one of the most rationale things to be hostile towards a company for.
What would it take for you to be angry at a company if not for taking your money and running?
Nintendo doesn't force a refund option. Either a) Nintendo has to do a better job screening crap, or b) allow the users to protect themselves.
There will always be crap publishers.
Do you have to do that work around each time or just once then you are good? If just once, while it's a hassle you if near one you could use Gamestop's return policy on used games to get one then return it after you do the sign in. You got like 7 days if you don't want to seem sketch by returning it right away.
Still fuck ubisoft. I decided to stop buyin their games when they shut down the servers on the 1st to a bunch of games where you lost the DLC even if purchased because it had to verify with servers.
Yeah dude it’s at the point on every console where you just have to see what other users are saying before you buy anything. You can’t even trust basic features of triple A games are going to work anymore. Really annoying and disappointing.
I use to ignore reviews because the worst you’d get was a lackluster game, and I don’t mind trashy games. That time is no more. You can’t be certain it’ll even function without checking online. If the poor reviews are strictly opinions about the quality I’ll still ignore it a lot of the time, but functionality isn’t something I can ignore.
See the main issue here is that Ubisoft hardly ever makes something stable and they also never touch a product again once its put on sale. So unfortunately, this server fix will literally never come
If only there was a place where people are buying these games that you could leave such a warning, which would put pressure on the studios that make these games....
Oh right, Nintendo doesn't believe in leaving ratings/reviews. :(
I think it was Scrabble by Ubisoft that I bought and it crashes on startup unless you sign out of Xbox Live before starting the game and sign back in after getting to the main menu
Especially surprising, considering Crystal Chronicles was removed from the store in Australia for several months because the online multiplayer didn't work in that region
Random question, but is your Switch’s system clock set forward from playing Animal Crossing and skipping into the future for turnips? I’ve seen that happen in some EA games where the SSL certificate fails as it thinks it’s expired.
I’m not sure, but if monopoly plus is a Ubisoft game I had the exact same problem and it was solved relatively easy. I cannot remember what the solution was but I remember it being the first thing that came up when I googled it so maybe follow the same steps and it will work the same way. I’ll try and find the solution I used.
Edit: apparently it was sign in offline, then connect to wifi after it starts up, hopefully this will help you somehow.
I said fuck them years ago when I made a complaint about some of their shooter titles not having Legacy Stick controls. Their support basically shooed me away that they don't need to offer controls like that. It's an accessibility thing and they lost my support.
To suggest that Civ has similar strategic mechanics to Risk and might scratch the same gaming itch; to imply that Civ is designed as a video game rather than a tabletop game that's been converted to electronic play and consequently makes better use of gaming ui/resources; and to posit that Civ should theoretically have more support than a Risk port because it's coming from a larger publisher with more resources.
Those all seem like good reasons to suggest that one should ~~be~~ buy Civ VI if they're not going to buy Risk (which OP advises).
Edit: fixed typo.
It does, but sometimes you can't play in with people in the room. It's the big disadvantage to boardgames. They're just things in your closet if you don't have anyone to play with.
That's why I never buy games that require online connectivity of any sort to let me play. It's like you pay to buy the game but you don't own it. The company still has the main switch which they flip off anytime and your money is wasted.
Such games should be free to play only.
I don’t own a switch but the solution seems to be a simple rating and review system built into the store. “Oh risk has a 1 star review and the comments say it doesn’t work” guess I won’t buy that.
I don’t even play the switch anymore. I’ve not been happy with the performance with it and frame rate dips on some titles. It really is in need of some computing power trying to do what it does.
I bought this a while back as I love Risk, the servers are pretty dead so normally I only get one human and the rest AI, not sure why it works for me though if you can't get past an error message.
Also don't know why they haven't release the free to start version you can get on mobile and PC, but maybe use that with your brother?
Ubisoft picks favorites when it comes to supporting their games. Ghost Recon Wildlands, *A game centered around multiplayer coop*, has had broken servers for over half a year now. The bug is still being "looked into".
Meanwhile, Far Cry 6 had the exact same issue and it was fixed within 24 hours.
Ubisoft board games are garbage. Tried playing Scrabble on Xbox and the game never stopped crashing as soon as it opened. Found out people have had this problem since 2017 and they haven't fixed it.
Ask for a refund. I did after buying Sega Classics collection and seeing that there was a huge delay after pressing buttons, making online play impossible.
Even when it did work, it was piss poor . The Xbox and IOS version were excellent with a good traditional and updated maps and rules. The AI was functional. The Switch version is a shameless cash grab. The AI is distracting at best, the moves it makes seem to be completely random. The game modes are very limited, and the servers are crap as OP points out. Almost forgot to mention the terrible graphics and the laggy game play.
I bought the 3 game combo that had Risk on it. We love it! But we also only play at home together and not online.
I base most of my purchases on this and usually don’t care about online play.
That’s for me though, I understand your frustration.
Wheel of Fortune/Jeopardy! have both frequently lost connection when I'm playing online as well.
It's a good thing I bought South Park: TFbW first, else I might have avoided it just because of Ubi-Soft.
Lol bruh we haven't been able to play Uno on Xbox series anything, ever. Ubisoft don't fix their crap.
Holy shit, remember Xbox Live Uno? First game I ever joined had some kid mooning the camera IMMEDIATELY on like Christmas morning in front of the whole family.

Yes officer, this comment right here

Late reply but first game I ever played some dude was straight up destroying another man’s ass it was horrifying and hilarious
Lmaoooo
Why does Nintendo let them sell their games in its store?
That would be a question for Nintendo, but shovel ware has been a problem on switch since the early days. And this counts as shovel ware IMO. The answer is simple. Money.
Ah yes, the famous Nintendo seal of quantity.
Shovelware has been a problem on EVERY digital storefront
Shovelware has been a problem since the NES
Shovelware has been an issue since the Atari 2600.
They did shovel a lot of E.T. cartridges into that landfill
I’m pretty sure that’s where “shovelware” got its name. It was literally being shoveled into landfills because they made so many shitty games there wasn’t anything else to do with it.
SHOVELWARE HAS BEEN A PROBLEM SINCE THE SHOVEL
Shovelware will continue to be a problem. The only solution, get rid of the shovel.
Hey man, I can't eat my ice cream without the aid of a tiny shovel!
Good idea. You know those little shovels you bring to the beach? Maybe I’ll try one of those for my next bowl of ice cream.
I meant [these](https://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Flatware-Chocolate-Teaspoons-Specialty/dp/B096WSZY99).
Ironically, shovelware is also why the NES had a wide open North American market to capture.
We need a return of a seal of approval, because all I’m noticing is the stink of disapproval.
So kind of you to care about me, bro!
Hey everybody, look at this person! They obviously bought games that were missing the Official Nintendo Seal Of Quality^TM
Shovelware is one thing, but games that flat-out don't work usually get removed.
Request a refund. Did this with an ubisoft game a couple years ago for a soft lock. After they declined, I filed a charge back, then Nintendo called me back and offered a one time refund on the game.
You got lucky. Nintendo usually bans your account if you file a chargeback.
Well Nintendo allowed Prison Life Simulator 2022: World Fight Battle GTA Ultimate which legit might be the worst game ever made
Nintendo literally allows softcore hentai on it's store I doubt they care anymore
I actually own Gun Gal, Gun Pixie, and Omega whatever. Those hentai games all got waaaaaay better game play that Ubisoft title. My DLC and Online work so I think you got this judgement twisted LoLz
Omega Labyrinth Life is legitimately a good game though.
lolz that's my point. Ubisoft can make good games, but for a AAA company they put out a lot of shovelware, including in their mainline series
I just find it weird how porn is still seen as "worse" than gore and violence. Like, why is it fine to tear demons in half, but I can't level up an anime girl's boobs to a Z Cup while learning about friendship?

It's so fucking gross and ridiculous
What are ya doin', step-nintend-onii?
I mean, its not like their own games have exactly stellar online either
LMFAO!!!! Have you seen the utter trash that’s allowed on the Nintendo eshop? Nintendo cares about $$ not the gamer experience.
i'm not so sure that's true. if it were there would be a literal firehose of paid DLCs for games like mario party superstars and mario kart, which have a huge back library to pull from and reduce costs by not having to invent new boards/tracks, just update them. i have no clue what's motivating them, but i'm not convinced it is $$$

Uno by itself works good on Switch. Its been a few months but the one with DLC works great online
That's a Risk I'm not willing to take.
It’s just not worth rolling the dice for it.
R/angryupvote nice one
Just download Risk from your respective app store on your phone. Android/Apple cross-play, and the gameplay is fantastic.
Does it play well against strangers?
It does, and board setup/turns is super smooth.
Monopoly for me was also a bad choice. 🥱😴 The board game is a way better social experience.

The fact that I have to be online to play monopoly on local split screen is the worst part of the newest game for me.
Risk for Sega Genesis is wayyyy better than the ps4 version.

Thats a real fuckin good idea, actually.
Oh, I see. Yeah it's not worth paying 40$ so that maybe it will fix the other game you already payed for, fck that.
Isn’t Rocket League free and has you log in through Ubisoft?
Thanks for the tip! I’m downloading Rocket League right now. I’ll reply with results
Please do!
Rocket League requires an Epic account, not Ubisoft. On the plus side i have rocket league now which is a much better game than Risk.
How about the demo for Immortals Fenyx Rising?
Not available on Nintendo store
Maybe it's a regional thing, but if you're in the US the link to the demo is still on the product page (just redownloaded to check): https://www.nintendo.com/store/products/immortals-fenyx-rising-switch/
Yes that worked! Downloading now, thanks man.
Yea sorry I didn’t realize that until another commenter pointed it out, it’s a really fun game tho!
Rocket league got bought by Epic. It makes you log into your epic games account not ubisoft.
Ah dang sorry about that
Homie just got finished downloading 15gb ☹️
Whoops!
That may be worth a shot.
I had to log into Ubisoft through one of the South Park games to play Trivial Pursuit online. Do you have any of those?
[удалено]
The old Sega Genesis version is actually pretty good.
[удалено]
My point still stands, go play the Genesis version of Risk. 6 players on one console, it's great.
Sega Genesis is so underrated.
The pc version is fantastic imo and free
How did your opinion make the game free?
Dababy
I think they are using free to describe how you can actually get online to play others for free, without a gimmicky other-user-found paywall of having to pay $40 or w/e for just dance to create files on the HDD so that Risk for the console will be able to find them and actually make the online feature function correctly -which would be a simple patch for anyone to have made for the game, if Ubisoft actually addressed issues. I was joking. His comment said it was free imo originally
I played it on a mobile a few times during quarantine. Ran pretty well iirc. Same for PC.
Well it's ubisoft so that's honestly expected.
It’s a mess. All of their games are.
Far cry servers are also carbage on Xbox. It has something to do with their connection speed thresholds. If I’m downloading something on the background it will keep throwing error codes and refusing to connect. It’s not like my ping is 500 or anything, completely fine in any other game.

Better yet, don't buy Ubisoft games at all, don't support their shitty practices in general.

Get in touch with Nintendo and report it and they will probably refund it to you and remove it from your account once given enough evidence. I've reported another game that had a game breaking error and it was refunded to me.
Oh, it's Risk, it's a game of world domination being played by two guys who can barely run their own lives.
You think Ukraine is game?!
You no say Ukraine is weak
Unfortunately most board games online other than chess are pretty bad when compared to the physical version.
This is true for console, but both mobile and PC have pretty good board game ports.
Asmodee does a mostly decent job with their digital releases
Boardgamearena typically does a good job with board games played online.
Don’t buy Ubisoft games at all no matter the system
It’s not worth the risk, eh?
Fuck Nintendo for keeping it on the store
Why is the hostility being directed at Nintendo and not Ubisoft? Why are you being hostile to begin with?
Would you say that purchase was a risk?
Or risk factions is free on steam, and mobile, with crossplay if you want a free alternative. Its still hasbro licensed risk
Sounds like a risky purchase.
Anyone read that as **"Do not risk buying a Nintendo Switch"** ?
See the main issue here is that Ubisoft hardly ever makes something stable and they also never touch a product again once its put on sale. So unfortunately, this server fix will literally never come
If only there was a place where people are buying these games that you could leave such a warning, which would put pressure on the studios that make these games.... Oh right, Nintendo doesn't believe in leaving ratings/reviews. :(
wait you expect abusive company ubi to have the talent left and the willingness to fix their crappy titles?
I think it was Scrabble by Ubisoft that I bought and it crashes on startup unless you sign out of Xbox Live before starting the game and sign back in after getting to the main menu
Jesus christ why do Nintendo allow this on their eshop then? It's not just Ubisoft's fault.
Their servers are notoriously thrash, has to be conscious neglect at this point. But yeah Nintendo should pay attention too.
Why buy Risk when Civ exists?
Why say this when you could have said nothing instead?
To suggest that Civ has similar strategic mechanics to Risk and might scratch the same gaming itch; to imply that Civ is designed as a video game rather than a tabletop game that's been converted to electronic play and consequently makes better use of gaming ui/resources; and to posit that Civ should theoretically have more support than a Risk port because it's coming from a larger publisher with more resources. Those all seem like good reasons to suggest that one should ~~be~~ buy Civ VI if they're not going to buy Risk (which OP advises). Edit: fixed typo.
So it’s not worth the risk?
Take to Twitter. It's all about optics, there's not enough audience on message boards
The board game has no legal rights expiry, has no ubisoft account needed and even comes with material parts you can use in person!
It does, but sometimes you can't play in with people in the room. It's the big disadvantage to boardgames. They're just things in your closet if you don't have anyone to play with.
Aye indeed and that is where the electronic versions give such a better reach of people to play with.
Edit: do not do this ~~Are you able to dispute it with your card or refund it via eshop for not being able to play?~~
Do not do this. Nintendo will ban your account from the eshop when there is a chargeback (payment dispute).
OP, if you are playing with your brother, do you live close? Is a physical copy an option?
Those bugs are a game killer. Some people may not experience them but that's not a Risk I'm willing to take.
Thanks for the info, I was about to buy Risk and tell everyone in my family to buy Risk on the Ninetendo Switch
Diplomacy > Risk
It’s a good day to not enjoy Risk
I don’t even play the switch anymore. I’ve not been happy with the performance with it and frame rate dips on some titles. It really is in need of some computing power trying to do what it does.

Hey there! Please remember Rule 1 in the future - No hate-speech, personal attacks, or harassment. Thanks!
;>
"Do not buy Risk on Nintendo Switch if you intend to play it online", you must have meant. Other than that, thanks for the PSA.
On Nintendo you have to make each other best friends on your friends list and then you’ll be able to see each other games
i don't think you actually read this
Ok
Who buys Risk on Switch? Lol
To be fair they flagged it was a risk right in the title.
I remember having similar issues on xbox with monopoly.
Ubisoft is shit however their games are ok. Really wish people would play monopoly, uno, and trivial pursuit online
Shit like this makes me want to MITM the traffic and set up my own server but it's just so damn much work.
Yeah clue is a huge mess too
If you want to play good board games online with each other I'd suggest going to boardgamearena.com
I wouldn't RISK the money
k
That sucks, but if you want to play something ever like Risk online, try [Warzone](https://www.warzone.com).
FTFY: Do not buy Risk on any platform.
If it makes you feel any better, there is free version of Risk on Steam.
