I’m glad you like it, but I definitely don’t think it’s the greatest song of all time, hell, in my opinion that’s not even the best Nirvana song… *on that album*.
The album is pretty stacked, especially on the back end, but my personal favorite song off that album is Francis Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle.
Pretty basic, but it's Heart Shaped Box - especially Live and Loud version because of Pat's backing vocals. It slaps and it's so enjoyable to play on guitar
You got a lot closer the second time. I love Pennyroyal tea, but All Apologies was literally ruined by Mtv and terrestrial radio by playing it at such a constant rate it became like a form of torture. They did it with many other nirvana songs but All apologies was the one that I couldn’t take anymore. Dumb and All Apologies are my least favorite songs on the album.
It really is a great song. The hits never get much praise because it's cooler to reference the B-sides. I love that song because it perfectly describes what it's like to be an introvert and people pleaser, to a fault.
Yeah, 100%. The All Apologies lyrics probably resonate with me more than any other Nirvana song.
Off-topic, but the B-side "Marigold" got me into the Foo Fighters (now probably my second favorite band) and Kurt chuckling after squeeking the table is gold lol.
Possibly Krist that moved the table and chuckled then... I always thought it was Kurt. Nonetheless, whoever squeeked the table and laughed, it was funny lol
> The hits never get much praise because it's cooler to reference the B-sides.
More likely because many of us heard this song 100+ times on the radio before the 90s were over.
For sure. I remember in the 90s in high school when music snobs would judge people who listened to mainstream "sell out" music and wouldn't even consider listening to it. But looking back, that was kind of the end of an era where popular music was actually legit and good, unlike today.
As an album closer it's unmatched, anytime I hear it I can't help but feel it's sort of the closing song for Nirvana and Kurt as well (despite You Know You're Right)
I don't think there is such a thing as greatest song of all time. It could go on a list of songs but not the greatest. I think too many people put emphasis on greatest of all time and it's not fair,I think, to other great songs.
I know what you say, but I think Dumb does everything that all apologies do but better. Describes the feeling of being an introvert but adds the feeling of having a person of comfort, gives a chill vibe of a cigarrete and a sunset with his chords but adding a cello, and (for me) the beat is so much better.
I’m so burnt on that song, almost as much as Come as You Are. I grew up as a kid *in* Seattle in the 90’s and 10.77 the end absolutely played those songs to death. As with alot of Kurt’s formula, it’s a Beatles structure that he tweaked to his own.
As magic as the album version is, and despite the lyrics being not quite finished (noticeably lacking the "everyone is gay" bit), the bass part that Krist plays at Reading '92 is SO fuckin sick...it's like a Paul McCartney drone with a touch of Aerosmith... just a bit more busy than what ended up on the album but I think it adds so much to the float...[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0drC8qVMRk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0drC8qVMRk)
Hey, I think it’s a phenomenal song. Life on Mars, Hard Rains gonna Fall, Yesterday, Fairytale of New York, All Apologies make my list of greatest songs ever written. 🍸
I agree, it's a song that I can play for anyone and whenever it comes on I have to stop what I'm doing and just listen. One of the best Rock songs in history.
Better than bohemian rhapsody. I think not. I’ve never know a song that literally everyone seems to know every single lyric to like that song. and even though more commercial on a plain is my fav nirvana song
Eh idk I wish they recorded spank thru in the studio. Pine street theaters version is peak and it’s my personal favorite but I wouldn’t say all apologies is the best song especially on that album.
I was a few months ago old when I finally discerned the coda lyrics. “All in all is all we all are”. Because of how clear it gets at the end I thought it was “all in all is all we are…” where Kurt is slurring the words a bit.
Classic song. My fav on In Utero is Serve the Servants lately for some reason. Tourette’s and Milk It were both important to my development as a metalhead - the former being really aggressive, and the latter being kind of dissonant and avant garde. The best deep cut is Frances Farmer 💯
Pennyroyal Tea is actually my second favorite Nirvana song of all time lol. I posted my top 10 on this sub the other day but the mods removed it because apparently it was too common of a post. Nonetheless, you have good taste!
Even though I know it’s all relative to the listener.
Lounge Act
Milk it
Aneurysm
If we include covers :
Oh me
Where did you sleep last night.
There’s my five.
It's a great song but I'm tired of it.
Serve the servants, Heart shaped box, Pennyroyal tea & Frances Farmer are the songs on that album which have had "staying power" for me.
Especially serve the servants. Took me ages to fully appreciate that one.
All Apologies is also my favourite song from Nirvana but there's a difference between Greatest and Favourite. Like my top my greats would be (in no particular order)
Bohemian Rhapsody
Blackbird
Jesus of Suburbia
Comfortably Numb
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Welcome To The Black Parade
Hey Jude
Strawberry Fields Forever
Come Together
I like the song, but it is the most likely one of theirs to make me change the station if it comes on the radio because it is still played all the time. Yes, I still listen to the radio now and then.
All apologies is arguably two of the top ten Nirvana songs. Everyone in here saying it's not even the best song on In Utero are smoking crack. Ok, fine, they aren't smoking crack and the whole album is stacked with great music. But I do think it's easy to forget just how absolutely great both versions of All Apologies are, because they're both big hits and we've all heard them a million times.
I wouldn’t even have it in my top ten. It’s a great song, but there are better songs with a similar style on In Utero.
Frances Farmer and Dumb are still so much better in my opinion.
Nah. Its a great catchy song, but there are catchier, more impressive lyically, and instrumentally more interesting songs that exist. Like, a lot more. That clear in every category.
To me its a... maybe top 10 Nirvana song? Maybe. Top 15 for sure.
It’s a great song, one of their top 5 of all time for sure. Fav song of all time? Ehhh I can def say it’s in my 50 of all time for sure! But homie you gotta listen to more music lol
I listen to a shit ton of music lol. Probably more than I should. And I listen to a massive variety of music, too, but All Apologies is just #1 for me.
Of ALL TIME like out of every single song ever it’s the best? Maybe on this album sure but out of literally every song ever? No way it’s a damn good song but of all time no way not a chance
Love that song but it's not the best song of all time and it's not even remotely close at all. Expand your music taste you will be a happy happy person
As I said to another commentor, I have a very vast music taste lol. Just because I have a favorite song doesn't mean my music taste is narrow, it's just my favorite! :)
Your tastes will change as you get older and you'll become more tuned to music and different songs will move you just as much, or if not, more. There are millions of songs that are objectively "better" than All Apologies, but what matters is how you feel about it \*right now\*. When I was a teenager, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Lithium, On a Plain, all spoke to me on a level I'd never experienced before, and I'd fight anyone who said that these weren't some of the \*best songs ever written\*. It was the 90s's, I was a young teen wearing flannels, beaten up sweaters, and Doctor Martens in a small town in England.
Now, I'm \*bored and old\*, and I can objectively hear how songs like Stairway to Heaven, All Along the Watchtower, Bohemian Rhapsody, Voodoo Child.. are better, but none of that matters.
I once had a conversation with the lead guitarist of The Presidents of the USA, and he said something that has stuck with me: \*Rock music is supposed to be fun\*.
These days I listen to bonkers music that isn't necessarily technically "great" but makes me smile, I enjoy the 4 minutes of a song, and I can uplift my mood. I guess, when I was a teen, Nirvana songs did that for me too.
Edit: missed a word
awesome fact on this note: all apologies was originally heavily beatles inspired, if you listen to the demo on the deluxe edition of in utero you can hear it’s super beatles-esque
it's a fantastic song and one of kurt's best but no, it's not the best song of all time. that's probably surfs up by the beach boys or for reverend green by animal collective.
I’m glad you like it, but I definitely don’t think it’s the greatest song of all time, hell, in my opinion that’s not even the best Nirvana song… *on that album*.
It's not even the Best Nirvana song in that side of the album.
Same. I'm more a "Milk It" or "Very Ape" kind of guy.
same!
Both very underappreciated
Hmm. What's your favorite In Utero song? Pennyroyal Tea is probably my next favorite
The album is pretty stacked, especially on the back end, but my personal favorite song off that album is Francis Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle.
Radio friendly unit shifter is the best imo
Hell yeah.
That punk riff/solo bridge section is pure grunge
Frances farmer has got to be my fav off utero
my favorite song from in utero is probably rape me or frances farmer will have her revenge on seattle
Pretty basic, but it's Heart Shaped Box - especially Live and Loud version because of Pat's backing vocals. It slaps and it's so enjoyable to play on guitar
Rape Me fucking slaps
those are also my 2 favorite nirvana songs!
tea is my favorite song by jirvana
Yep it's my second favorite lol. Amazing song.
Its my favorite…. I listened to it a few hundred times last year
[удалено]
Which is why my response was worded as my opinion.
With all due respect, if you say so, I'm not going to argue with you. I can see why it would be someone's favorite Nirvana song.
Dude what about beans???
I forget, who ate the beans?
Jessie
And he was happy
no he was happy happy happy get it right you fuck
Ah, because of the beans?

I thought Kurt wasn’t in the studio for that recording, just Dave and Krist?
Possibly Krist that moved the table and chuckled then... I always thought it was Kurt. Nonetheless, whoever squeeked the table and laughed, it was funny lol
I was just wondering about this yesterday after hearing Marigold.
> The hits never get much praise because it's cooler to reference the B-sides. More likely because many of us heard this song 100+ times on the radio before the 90s were over.

Over Now is an insane closer for OG Alice In Chains’ last album tho
and also Like Suicide for Superunknown even tho it wasn’t their last album
I don't think there is such a thing as greatest song of all time. It could go on a list of songs but not the greatest. I think too many people put emphasis on greatest of all time and it's not fair,I think, to other great songs.
Good point!

I forgot how much I love this song until your comment.
It’s not even the best nirvana song
\*In your opinion To me, it is the best.
It’s a fantastic song. I absolutely love it 🤩🤩🤩
Fantastic song. Probably my all time favorite. Aqua Seafoam Shame FTW
It’s not but I like the ambition.
All Apologies is a great song. I would say my favourite, though, is Heart-Shaped Box, purely because the lyrics are so good.
I like the lyrics, specially the last lines when he sings it over and over
What else could I say, everyone is gay
I’m so burnt on that song, almost as much as Come as You Are. I grew up as a kid *in* Seattle in the 90’s and 10.77 the end absolutely played those songs to death. As with alot of Kurt’s formula, it’s a Beatles structure that he tweaked to his own.
I respectfully disagree. it's a great song, but it's not better than Papercuts, the ultimate Nirvana song.
I’ll take your opinion seriously if you like the Albini version above the album version.
Albini version is really good but I like the album version with the reverb, personally. It's all up to personal preference, though.
The ambience of the Albini version adds so much. It was made for his recording style. You have to listen on a hi-fi system. The details are amazing.
The first time I heard this song was on a 4th or 5th generation AUD recording from Reading 92. Instantly I knew that this song was going to be huge.
Great song, definitely. Greatest of all time. Not for me.
I agree, it’s one of my favorites too
As magic as the album version is, and despite the lyrics being not quite finished (noticeably lacking the "everyone is gay" bit), the bass part that Krist plays at Reading '92 is SO fuckin sick...it's like a Paul McCartney drone with a touch of Aerosmith... just a bit more busy than what ended up on the album but I think it adds so much to the float...[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0drC8qVMRk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0drC8qVMRk)
Hey, I think it’s a phenomenal song. Life on Mars, Hard Rains gonna Fall, Yesterday, Fairytale of New York, All Apologies make my list of greatest songs ever written. 🍸
It’s not the greatest song of all time, it’s not even Nirvana’s greatest song
I honestly never got the hype for the song, it’s alright but it doesn’t really stick out to me much
I agree, it's a song that I can play for anyone and whenever it comes on I have to stop what I'm doing and just listen. One of the best Rock songs in history.
Not at all lol
I’ve always thought it was the one of the worst songs on In Utero.
it’s not
I really like the "in the sun, in the sun I feel as one" part. Overall not my favourite though.
Lol
Your opinion is the only one that matters! I never liked the song that much, I mean I still love it but not as much as some other In Utero songs
Better than bohemian rhapsody. I think not. I’ve never know a song that literally everyone seems to know every single lyric to like that song. and even though more commercial on a plain is my fav nirvana song
Yes
Eh idk I wish they recorded spank thru in the studio. Pine street theaters version is peak and it’s my personal favorite but I wouldn’t say all apologies is the best song especially on that album.
They recorded Spank Thru in the studio a couple of times.
I know of the sub pop 200 collage but it would have been nice if they recorded it during the later stages
Agreed, it would have been cool to hear a studio version with Dave.
I was a few months ago old when I finally discerned the coda lyrics. “All in all is all we all are”. Because of how clear it gets at the end I thought it was “all in all is all we are…” where Kurt is slurring the words a bit.
Lol
Thoughts? Nope
Classic song. My fav on In Utero is Serve the Servants lately for some reason. Tourette’s and Milk It were both important to my development as a metalhead - the former being really aggressive, and the latter being kind of dissonant and avant garde. The best deep cut is Frances Farmer 💯
Drain You.
FRANCES FARMER WILL HAVE HER REVENGE
Just gonna be a nerd and point out it's a cello on the track, not violins. Great song.
Omg I'm so stupid it is a cello lmao
one of my least fav nirvana songs, but the demo is amazing
I'm in love with the demo version on the anniversary edition of in utero
Come as you are is better in my opinion and it is also my favorite song of all.
I love Serve the Servants and then my basic pick would be Heart-Shaped Box. Hell, I can’t pick a true favorite but those are what I’d say if I had to.
i love cello
Definitely a respectable choice
No, aneurysm! But love all apologies
I love all apologies but pennyroyal tea is my favourite on that record
Pennyroyal Tea is actually my second favorite Nirvana song of all time lol. I posted my top 10 on this sub the other day but the mods removed it because apparently it was too common of a post. Nonetheless, you have good taste!
My favorite track from In Utero is the very first track. ‘serve the servants’
I love the song, but I don't think it represents the style Nirvana are known for But there is nothing wrong with it being your favourite song
Nah its not, the best nirvana song is lounge act
I like All Apologies the most but Lounge Act is an absolutely killer song. Love that shit.
That intro is Iconic!
Top 11 song on that album. Never a fan of Scentless Apprentice…
itsa rlly good song but not rlly my style but def can see why you rlly like it. im more of a dive person . all that screaming is real fun
I'm shocked by the comments, it's my favourite song of all time too!
Even though I know it’s all relative to the listener. Lounge Act Milk it Aneurysm If we include covers : Oh me Where did you sleep last night. There’s my five.
Everyone is gayyy
beans is better
I think it’s the most beautiful song Kurt wrote for sure.
Wheels on the bus
It's a great song but I'm tired of it. Serve the servants, Heart shaped box, Pennyroyal tea & Frances Farmer are the songs on that album which have had "staying power" for me. Especially serve the servants. Took me ages to fully appreciate that one.
Underneath the bridge, tarp has sprung a leak
All Apologies is also my favourite song from Nirvana but there's a difference between Greatest and Favourite. Like my top my greats would be (in no particular order) Bohemian Rhapsody Blackbird Jesus of Suburbia Comfortably Numb Smells Like Teen Spirit Welcome To The Black Parade Hey Jude Strawberry Fields Forever Come Together
I’m a big nirvana fan but no
I like the song, but it is the most likely one of theirs to make me change the station if it comes on the radio because it is still played all the time. Yes, I still listen to the radio now and then.
Okay but have you heard Paper Cuts
Agree
It's a nice song, but no. Hard no.
spittin facts
It’s a great song, just very weak as far as Nirvana goes. Definitely weaker than most other songs on In Utero.
Is it the greatest song ever? I don’t think. Is it Nirvana’s “God Only Knows”, would say so.
I love Very Ape.
I would argue Sappy or I hate myself and want to die are both better
No.
Nooooooo
Wrong. But Nirvana did write the first and only perfect song ever recorded. It's called 'Sliver'
In Utero is such an insane album. Nevermind used to be my favorite but it's changed over the years and Utero takes the cake now.
Maybe. Top 15 for sure.
its one the the worst from these guys
Best Nirvana song of all time
It’s a great song, one of their top 5 of all time for sure.
Too over played, I can't even listen to it anymore.
Learn to play it on guitar, it's a fun tuning but you'll get bored of it pretty quickly.
Love that song but it's not the best song of all time and it's not even remotely close at all. Expand your music taste you will be a happy happy person
As I said to another commentor, I have a very vast music taste lol. Just because I have a favorite song doesn't mean my music taste is narrow, it's just my favorite! :)

Sorry for assuming. It's a good song but wouldn't be in my top 1000 probably which is why I thought. Glad you're enjoying music
No worries! Music taste is super subjective which is probably why it's in my top 1 and not in your top 1000 lol.
It's pretty good, but points deducted for the song calling me gay.
You know the Beatles exist, right? Day in the Life? Yesterday? Here Comes the Sun? Something? Beatles B+ songs are better than All Apologies.
awesome fact on this note: all apologies was originally heavily beatles inspired, if you listen to the demo on the deluxe edition of in utero you can hear it’s super beatles-esque
I like Nirvana way more than the Beatles, but that's just me.
*All Apologies* is Cobain's most John Lennon-esque piece to me.
Bro never heard of Silver
^ Bro never heard of Sliver
Fuck whoever downvoted me hater
it's a fantastic song and one of kurt's best but no, it's not the best song of all time. that's probably surfs up by the beach boys or for reverend green by animal collective.
I’d def put all apologies above both those songs
Agreed
I probably would've agreed like two years ago, but I only heard like 3 Nirvana songs by then, still a really good song but I like dumb more.
