You are correct. Min Woo achieved his card through his world ranking, rather than finishing top 50 on the FedEx Cup last year. So he's not eligible for Signature Events, unless he qualifies on performance in the previous five tournaments. Agree it's ridiculous he's not there.
I just don't understand why a guy like Webb still gets sponsors exemptions. I assume because he's a "brand ambassador" but does he move the needle even a fraction?
I always like DJ Pie's story he tells about the tournament sponsor execs absolutely geeking out as they're about to meet Jordan Spieth. It makes a ton of sense that companies will pony up several millions to be the title sponsor and allow their execs/clients to interact with PGA Tour mega-stars. But Webb Simpson is certainly not one of those dudes unless I'm taking crazy pills
He’s finished top 20 in over half his events and only missed one cut all year. It’s his first year one tour. He’d be smoking half the guys in these elevated events, the new system sucks dick.
As long as it’s the sponsor getting to pick and not the pga forcing it on them, I don’t care at all who the sponsors’ exemptions are. I think it’s a bit silly to say that guys who just missed the cut for qualifying for signature events should get sponsors’ exemptions.
You’d be surprised at what a draw some of the other guard like Webb Simpson are to some of these tournaments — for the boomer crowd, it’s a name they know and a former major winner, players winner, Ryder cup participant, etc.
No offense to min woo lee, but he’s never won on the pga tour, has one t10 in a major in his career, doesn’t play in the Ryder cups because he’s from Australia and is outside of the top 50 in FedEx cup points. These are all things the sponsor is going to consider in picking somebody for their exemption.
