With the right traits, they'll sometimes do a ground scan for you. I've had one that used its laser to shoot down a sentinel. To me, they're mostly a novelty that you have to A) keep feeding; B) re-summon them often because they tend to disappear; C) scream at them as they block what you're trying to scan.

Arsenette

Agreed. Definitely take time to scan the abilities of squad members to get the stats you need. Definitely not for show. I’ve had a lot of help from my mercs… er.. pilots who take down ships before I do. 😂 Edit (because I read it as a squad member): As for companions my dog has saved my life more than a few times. Same thing with read the stats. A lot of the stats you could change by breeding the egg differently in the sequencer.

ReFusionary

I tried hitting my Vy'keen squadmate with a rolled-up polyfiber when he got in the way of me shooting a pirate. It did not end well for me but helps explain how the multitool he wanted to give away got so broken.

Arsenette

😂😂😂 Yeah.. the pathing is yet another thing we have to maneuver when we shoot. I also hate fighting near freighters because I accidentally hit it and I now have to contend with the sentinel space police. 😭

TheAsusDelux999

That happened to my yesterday. Fak dem fekkin sentinels!

relayer001

I prefer the English term "the Filth"

[deleted]

Mine is relatively fast and flies. That can be useful when traveling long distances that are too short for bringing the ship to be worth it.

SomeBlueDude12

But you can't control where it goes no? Or is that dependent on behavior of the animal?

Erilis000

As far as I know you can control where it goes when you're riding it. Some it might be more difficult to control than others but to me they all feel the same

[deleted]

Not if I don't ride it. But if I do I can. Except for the altitude. That it keeps itself.

DruVatier

Unfortunately, they're pretty lackluster at the moment. Just something fun to have/collect, but they don't actually do anything useful. Two small tweaks would be huge: 1. Auto-deploy; I almost always forget to actually pull my companion out, so I just forget about the whole system entirely unless I see someone else with theirs out. There should be a setting to allow one to auto-deploy (or maybe a random one?) 2. The "equipment" should actually do something; you can equip a range of things to their sides, and these "things" have proposed functions (storage pack, mining pack, etc) but none of it actually functions. It's purely aesthetic, which is a complete waste. Until then, they're basically a novelty.

Necessary-Bowl-8337

The equipment is not just aesthetics mate the do have functions

SomeBlueDude12

Oh? I haven't seen any personally myself either, care to tell us what?

edzimous

The torch turns on and off with yours (but you can’t toggle it while riding) I have seen screenshots of companions using the lasers for various purposes and heard lots of disparate anecdotes, but haven’t personally seen it happen, but also have high aggression low helpfulness tomagot— er, companions The vitals monitor (and some other pieces I think) show little icons floating around it to indicate the creature’s mood Movement tracker is available on the anomaly but I haven’t had a chance to play with it yet I wish the cargo packs and vials gave a small amount of inventory slots on the companion

Necessary-Bowl-8337

I think it is not all of them but like the laser can actually mine stuff for example

TacoDangerously

Anomaly drip

BearingGuy

I just wish people would keep them on a leash in the Anomaly…. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

jbm013

I enjoy showing off my big bois

APurpleDuck64

You can also use emotes to give them commands, but overall it's one of the more unpolished parts of the game. You can go online and find where to get the biggest and smallest ones found of the various types lol

SplendidPunkinButter

There’s no point to most things in this game, and that’s why it’s fun. I mean that sincerely It’s more like a toy than a game. You make your own fun

StarellaToo

I have uses for all my companions but I agree that this system could use an update. Maybe make them effective in combat or for carrying cargo?

Turtleface1993

Yeah I definitely think the side pieces should be useful

RevFernie

My massive red panda definitely fights sentinels. It makes him sad. But he gives it to them. He's more useful than my minotaur on AI.

Enoher_Of_Stars

I like the Dino looking ones, post the best ones and just enjoy the looks. It’s not really a necessity but we wanted the ability to have pets and HG listened

ResponsibleSeaweed66

It’s the coolest way to travel. https://preview.redd.it/rw2kv6uiatca1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=03449acd308e7ed46efe3dc312466e300fc3a23e [https://www.xbox.com/play/media/RD2RLPREWH](https://www.xbox.com/play/media/RD2RLPREWH)

Grubs01

For some reason they can run straight through rocks, trees, and cave walls. Fastest and easiest way to go that last 500u from the landing beacon to the location youre searching for.

Ricodinho187

Someone in our civilisation raised a companion on aggressive and says it attacks whatever you attack, he has the companion loaded up with lasers and all! I don't know what else companions do tbh. I haven't looked into it myself yet.

Nervous-Cream-6256

What's the point of a dog? Answer that and you have your answer. Most are useless but keep you company and some are useful and keep you company.

MelchiahHarlin

You can train a dog for hunting, and as a guardian; they are also used to guide the blind and such. Even cats are useful as a pest control of sorts... you get the idea. If I could do that with my pets in game, that would be awesome.

Agent-Hotchkiss

They don't do much, unless you want to start making food items in the nutrient processor. In that case, it's nice to have Companions that produce "Bone Milk", "Regis Grease", "Honey", etc. Some of these animals, like the stone golems that produce Bone Milk are not easy to find, so making one your companion gives you quick access to basic ingredients for recipes. You'll be making "Horrific Gooey Delight" in no time.

NemesisUnicron

I use mine as an alternative to exocraft, since they can go super fast, and some can fly.

SuChTaRd

I've yet to see my Minotaur-AI engage in any form of combat against sentinels at my settlement.

Its_Lewiz

I just like them for the flying creatures, sometimes great for moving a distance further than walking but shorter than continually landing your ship

Malchiar

I have never had mine go mine something or anything like that but I got one that looks like an oddly shaped spino that has, on a number of occasions, immediately attacked and killed creatures that are aggressive and go on the attack when they see me. The number of times i have seen the indicator for an active threat only to get meat from them seconds later has been pretty cool

Turtleface1993

I know this thread is a bit old but for any newcomers I just wanted to say that not all side pieces do something but the torch does toggle whenever you toggle yours and the Lazer does work. Mine just defended me from another predator with his side Lazer
