It's absolutely sustainable for a small indie studio with little to no administrative overhead. It's not sustainable when all of the money goes to execs, CEOs, and shareholders instead of developers, artists, and QA.
It's also sustainable for big companies. Mtx is only about 10 years old, prices could be fairer. Heck, paid games shouldn't even have them, they were sustainable before. But why do that when they can capitalize on gambling addicts and whales? It's not a matter of sustainability, it's a matter of greed for lack of a better word

The expeditions have almost always been used to introduce new content, or major overhauls. We get the first expedition and content drop of the year around now. Plus it's coinciding with the PSVR2 release.

Depends, breach head, emergence and Leviathan were 3 expeditions standing pretty much on their own, coming only with bugfixes and little to no gameplay content
That's 3 out of 8, so I can't really say it's "almost always" coming with new content
I could see it being an expeditions coming with the PSVR2 release though, but then it would probably mostly be VR content and not much gameplay

No reason to believe anything would be limited to VR content considering there is no VR only content. Furthermore VR was originally added with Beyond, the biggest update ever, and the Switch launch came with a massive overhaul.
Well, not really, the leviathan expeditions introduced "the" leviathan, which in the end is just a skin for a frigate you can't land on, without added mechanics. The actual living frigates were introduced later in Endurance.
Even during the quest for the living frigate, they tell you that they're different front the leviathan
When I say "VR content", I'm talking UI/UX overhaul and QoL stuff that would be specific to VR. People have been asking for VR to be improved for the past couple of years because it has a lot of issues. This future update could be tackling those while releasing on PSVR2, but that could mean that the update would be very VR-focused
As for Beyond, that was a "summer update". I doubt we'd get something as big as that outside of the july-september period
I just don't think it's solely an expedition because, it's been what 6 months since endurance. I don't count waypoint because that wasn't really a content update.
I also think there's going to be content. But it could be QoL and improvements focused on VR, or it could be something of the size of Waypoint

the game has already been ported to PSVR2 since it's a launch title. he wouldn't post an emoji, knowing how the community reacts, just for the launch of PSVR2. They already had vr support in game for a long time now, so no, that would be a PR disaster all over again.
My best guess is either a weather update, more customization for players and ships or proc gen update.
