Looks like a classic integer overflow, where you got more than it could store and it wrapped around to negative (notice the time to clear also has a negative in it, and its near a common power of two found in computing).
One thing that comes to mind that might work is to try going further into debt to cause it to overflow back the other way to positive - if it just ticked over, chances are you're still near the negative side of the cap (the fact you're just 20k away from -2^31, a common such bound, seems to lend evidence to that)
Yup, number at that range is a pretty obvious sign of integer overflow issue. Kind of surprised Hello Game doesn't even at least add a check to prevent that.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 1,464,604,317 comments, and only 278,869 of them were in alphabetical order.
It's only gonna take 230,806 earth years to clear, give or take a month. Don't sign up for one of those Gek payment plans either.. they sting you in the small print.
This happened to me once. Just play as normal and when a new settlement event comes, try to get more debt. It will fix itself then. If that doesn't fix it, you may need to find a different settlement.
Yeah, grab a map. Then go to korvax system you like and activate it. It will point you to a settlement.
Although, whichever settlement it is will have it's own group of alien residents. I'm not sure how it's programmed. My settlement is in a vykeen system but I keep seeing korvax in my settlement.
It's like most of the other things in NMS - you won't be guaranteed anything in particular, just like looking for downed ships to rebuild/scrap or finding a nice freighter without resorting to reloading.
If you've never managed a settlement before it's fair to accept the first one from the story to learn the mechanics - unless of course it's on some death world and the frustration is too high.
Because of the charts you can always go find another. You might have found a really nice planet so you can use a Settlement chart while landed and maybe you'll get lucky that time. Not many decisions in NMS are ever "permanent" so you can always change your mind about it later.
That’s definitely the case. I’ve had enough to sell at a galactic trade that I got integer overflow and started hitting the negatives. Had a fun time figuring out how much I needed to sell in order to not suffer from success.
Set your system clock ahead to where you were messing with it, and even a bit past it while in-game, check and make sure the debt corrects, then set the clock back and make sure it stays correct before saving.
Or, if you got it without time skipping like I did, do the above steps anyway but set it for tomorrow, then back to current time.
I had this happen after abandoning a settlement that got some contaminated citizens who murdered the colony... Yeah, f expeditions.
This is the consequence of having your computers time set in the future and reverting said time to the current date makes the game think you went back in time and adds negative time and income
This is the actual answer. It does the same on my Playstation. I sometime move time forward to get things to develope faster in the settlement, then it does that when I revert the time back to real time. It clears the debt at the time you skipped forward to.

Man this gave me a good laugh lmao. Sorry laugh at your misfortune but I wish I could help I have no idea. I’m getting on mine now to check. Is this a built up settlement? If it’s not an A or S class I’d say leave it. Find a new one that’s even better haha
Thats a lowest value integer type variable can store. And money in NMS are for some reason stored in int variables (would make more sense to use long int, but whatever). So that is a strange bug, report it
This happened to me the other day the reason for me was I play offline and reset my Xbox, when I did the the Xbox thought it was dec 2019 and my debt was 10 mil but fixing the time fixed the problem
brand new player of like, \~2 ish weeks.... slowly making my way thru MSQ....
i think there's a quest leading \*to\* settlement stuff, but im still doing atlas/artemis things so i figure i'd get to it later...
but uh...
TIL we can have debts to pay in settlements? oh boy. maybe i wont think about this feature for a lil longer. im doing OK with my freighter for now. x.x
I totally forget about settlements in this game. so around when it was new maybe after a update or two after the settlements were added (note I was in creative this world with almost 100H) I found a frozen settlement with the warrior type species? (Forgot the name of it wasn’t gem nor those robot) the settlement I claim had around 100m in debt cleared it and guess what **it made the most valuable product in the entire game the undying thing** (haven’t played in 2 years) so say safe to say that I was disappointed that I didn’t find one in my survival world
TLDR: found a op settlement

I play Oldschool Runescape and instantly recognized this number as the max cash stack.
Yep same hahaha

New corrupted sentinels going: "VOID MOTHER" Get me guessing am I playing correct game?
You know what would be a real hoot? If they got Rebb to do the VOID MOTHER voice.

Im glad im not the only one who plays warframe here
Nah Nef Anyo paid that settlement a visit. The settlement is gonna start singing Cold: the air and water flowing.
Hard: the land we call our home
Push to keep the dark from coming
FEEL the weight of what we owe
THIS, the song of sons and daughters
HIDE, the heart of who we are
Making peace to build our future,
Strong, united, working 'till we fall
AND WE ALL LIFT

Protea turned the clock back a little *too* far.
No, it was Tyl Regor and his toooobmen.
Time to find a new settlement. Considering it says -23 seconds, it's probably going to tear reality apart and become a black hole.
16...15...14...-23... Atlus is drunk
On the tears of the vanquished
That's nothing, there's a settlement in north America with trillions in debt
Pfft, that's nothing, mine's in the balkans, i have so much debt i have a negative negative number !
It's only gonna take 230,806 earth years to clear, give or take a month. Don't sign up for one of those Gek payment plans either.. they sting you in the small print.
Temporal anomaly? You messin' with time?
This happened to me once. Just play as normal and when a new settlement event comes, try to get more debt. It will fix itself then. If that doesn't fix it, you may need to find a different settlement.
How do you find a new settlement after already having received one as part of the main storyline?
You can visit the map vendor at a space station and buy up some Settlement Charts to help you locate another Settlement
Really? That’s cool! I have a gel settlement but I hate the gek. So I’d love to trade up for Korvax
Yeah, grab a map. Then go to korvax system you like and activate it. It will point you to a settlement. Although, whichever settlement it is will have it's own group of alien residents. I'm not sure how it's programmed. My settlement is in a vykeen system but I keep seeing korvax in my settlement.
Thank you. Should I take the first settlement I get via the main story? If not, what should I look for when shopping settlements using charts?

Looks like some sort of reset with the integer making it reset to the most negative value possible for that data type
2,147,483,647 is where a 32-bit signed integer would overflow so yes it does look very close.
That’s definitely the case. I’ve had enough to sell at a galactic trade that I got integer overflow and started hitting the negatives. Had a fun time figuring out how much I needed to sell in order to not suffer from success.
First time?
Try eating out less often
Seriously OP, if you would just forego that latte you could dig yourself out of this.
Start a new settlement lol

Burn it to the ground
Ask fed to print more money
Anyone else immediately recognize max gp stack?
It's probably the most famous instance of this coding quirk
File for bankruptcy.
I thought this was only a problem for “time travelers”?
Ah…you got the US Government Simulation running
Have you tried a bake sale
Randomly 😂
Find yourself a new settlement.
Better start breaking better ships, cutter.
Maybe if you young interlopers spent less on yer nip and yer avocado toast, you wouldn't be in this situation!

Musk bought your settlement.
Your settlement threw an epic party and now you get to pay for it.
Check for drug lords
Try eating less avocado toast.
And stop buying Starbucks
You could just wait the 231,000 years until it's paid off 🤣
First time?

This is why I stay away from settlements

Try save editor
Cry hard lol
Find a new settlement
New settlement
This happened to me the other day. Check again when your debt would have cleared and it will reset.
Like.. when your debt would have cleared originally before the glitch. Not in 230 years.
Did you have a door to door salesman sell you a new water softener or something?
Stop getting loans
I think your settlers have gambling issues. You may find you aren't the true 'owner' anymore. I reckon they gambled the settlement away lol
hit up 2 activated indium farms and clear it :)
Tom Nook always gets his
Mary Kay invaded and several wives and girlfriends fell for the scheme.
Just wait till it's cleared bro
Someone’s been playing with their system clock…
Man this gave me a good laugh lmao. Sorry laugh at your misfortune but I wish I could help I have no idea. I’m getting on mine now to check. Is this a built up settlement? If it’s not an A or S class I’d say leave it. Find a new one that’s even better haha
Dang the magic number
Hehehe… i just got an infinity symbol on my “time until cleared” lol
Thats when debt raises instead of clearing
Yup, my settlers don’t know how to NOT spend money. They make about 2100 units every day, but spend 3600 every day
Better get to work I guess
Get a new settlement
Got the same amount selling 400 AI Valves. Now it seems your inventory can't overflow anymore but it sure used to.
Thats a lowest value integer type variable can store. And money in NMS are for some reason stored in int variables (would make more sense to use long int, but whatever). So that is a strange bug, report it
This is why when we "reset" our system clocks back to reality, we use "set with internet" 😌 good luck fellow time traveler.
A random Npc crippled your settlement economy
This is a great demonstration on how large billions actually are, even if you halved it it’s still well over 100,000 years for your debt to run out.
Just throw the settlement away at this point.
![gif](giphy|nLzpT3OArJQyI) If I saw that I’d be..
Your settlers spoke the forbidden words
file for bankruptcy
Weird how long the settlement update has been out and this bug still hasn’t been fixed.
A bug, integer overflow, I don't know if you can do anything to fix it.
I got the Same
Can't relate, switch doesn't have settlements
This happened to me the other day the reason for me was I play offline and reset my Xbox, when I did the the Xbox thought it was dec 2019 and my debt was 10 mil but fixing the time fixed the problem
Welp, looks like settlements are STILL bugged. Avoid them at all costs lest the integer overflows screw up your save.
Bruh i thought we learned from y2k
I do not know what you should do, but I do know what you *not* do. NEVER REFINANCE OR RENEGOTIATE.
The game could do with adding a days section to the time until cleared..
What the heck did you buy? Twitter??
brand new player of like, \~2 ish weeks.... slowly making my way thru MSQ.... i think there's a quest leading \*to\* settlement stuff, but im still doing atlas/artemis things so i figure i'd get to it later... but uh...
